<content type="xhtml" xml:lang="en-US" xml:base="http://www.laureneuph.com/my_blog/"><div xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><p>I'm a bit behind on my gig posts, so I'll just quickly share these pictures from a <a href="https://www.facebook.com/armyfieldbandbrassquintet?ref=hl" target="_self">Brass Quintet</a> performance at the Rosedale Senior Center in Baltimore. We played here last summer and were happy to return. Several of the patrons even remembered that I was engaged to be married last year, and asked me how I liked being a newlywed. Sharp memories! Here's my view from the lobby as I wait to leap out and drop some theme &amp; variations on the unsuspecting crowd. </p>
<p><a class="asset-img-link" href="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c01901baba60a970b-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="BQ Rosedale 14" class="asset  asset-image at-xid-6a01348556cb46970c01901baba60a970b" src="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c01901baba60a970b-500wi" style="width: 475px;" title="BQ Rosedale 14" /></a></p>
<p>We performed the same program we have been doing at universities, and the crowd was very receptive to the modern works that stretched their ears a bit. It's great to play people's favorites, but it's also nice to share music that is "new" for a particular audience. If it's good, they will appreciate it, even if it's not their usual taste.</p>
<p><a class="asset-img-link" href="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c019101a17678970c-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="BQ Rosedale 32" class="asset  asset-image at-xid-6a01348556cb46970c019101a17678970c" src="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c019101a17678970c-500wi" style="width: 475px;" title="BQ Rosedale 32" /></a></p>
<p>I think Brass Quintet music makes for a lovely post-lunch digestif.</p>
<p><a class="asset-img-link" href="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017eeaa8f418970d-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="BQ Rosedale 10" class="asset  asset-image at-xid-6a01348556cb46970c017eeaa8f418970d" src="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017eeaa8f418970d-500wi" style="width: 475px;" title="BQ Rosedale 10" /></a></p>
<p>And here's a shot of me cheesin' it for the people. I have to tell you about my Super Fan. This elderly gentleman thought I was the bee's knees. He even told the guys that this group would be NOTHING without me. Ha! Now, we all know that's not true, but it was pretty funny to hear him talk me up to the rest of the guys. After some of the abuse I take from this crew, I'm okay with a little diva-style ego stroking!</p>
<p><a class="asset-img-link" href="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c019101a15573970c-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="BQ Rosedale 21" class="asset  asset-image at-xid-6a01348556cb46970c019101a15573970c" src="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c019101a15573970c-500wi" style="width: 475px;" title="BQ Rosedale 21" /></a></p><xhtml:img xmlns:xhtml="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/loudlife/~4/K1G0MJ4GhAs" height="1" width="1" /></div></content>

<p><a href="https://www.facebook.com/armyfieldbandbrassquintet?fref=ts" target="_self">The US Army Field Band Brass Quintet</a> struck lunar paydirt with a gig at the <a href="http://airandspace.si.edu" target="_self">Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum</a> in Washington, DC. Seriously, this was one of the most fun gigs we've ever done, and I think all our gigs are fun! The museum staff staged us right under the <a href="http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/apollo-soyuz/" target="_self">Apollo-Soyuz</a> display. There were a number of seats for patrons, and thousands of people were standing around in front and above us. </p>
<p>
<a class="asset-img-link" href="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017eead9d131970d-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="8626072987_8050d89e69_o" class="asset  asset-image at-xid-6a01348556cb46970c017eead9d131970d" src="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017eead9d131970d-500wi" style="width: 475px;" title="8626072987_8050d89e69_o" /></a></p>
<p>This young man was very intrigued by the euphonium. I think its glorious tone is perfectly complimented by towering spacecraft.</p>
<p><a class="asset-img-link" href="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c01901bab99a2970b-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="8627184822_5bfd597817_o" class="asset  asset-image at-xid-6a01348556cb46970c01901bab99a2970b" src="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c01901bab99a2970b-500wi" style="width: 475px;" title="8627184822_5bfd597817_o" /></a></p>
<p>Did you know Neil Armstrong played euphonium? I thought of him as I played Endearing Young Charms amid the engineering that made his historic moonwalk possible.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c01901bab8af7970b-pi"><img alt="8627185758_7f31deaf5f_o" src="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c01901bab8af7970b-500wi" title="8627185758_7f31deaf5f_o" /></a></p>
<p><a href="http://airandspace.si.edu" target="_self">The National Air and Space Museum</a> is the most popular of all the wonderful museums on the DC Mall. It was an honor to perform as part of their Chamber Music Series. I think we were a perfect fit. A military band surrounded by a celebration of flight and space exploration...what could be more All-American? </p>

We've had gigs all over the 100-mile imposed limitation. A few weeks ago we made an appearance at <a href="http://www.messiah.edu/departments/music/" target="_self">Messiah College</a> in Pennsylvania. Mike Harcrow, a buddy from UNT, is the Horn Professor at Messiah, and he has hosted our group before. He always treats us right—a beautiful hall, a full audience, and num-nums for lunch!</p>
<p>Bob works with a horn student before our recital.</p>
<p><a class="asset-img-link" href="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c01901babac25970b-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="Messiah 5" class="asset  asset-image at-xid-6a01348556cb46970c01901babac25970b" src="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c01901babac25970b-500wi" style="width: 475px;" title="Messiah 5" /></a></p>
<p>The Messiah Music Department moved into a beautiful new facility this year, and we were thrilled to perform in the shiny recital hall.</p>
<p><a class="asset-img-link" href="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c01901babadda970b-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="Messiah 31" class="asset  asset-image at-xid-6a01348556cb46970c01901babadda970b" src="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c01901babadda970b-500wi" style="width: 475px;" title="Messiah 31" /></a></p>
<p>The biggest surprise was running into <a href="https://music.unt.edu/faculty-and-staff/detail/32" target="_self">Professor Dennis Fisher</a>, Associate Director of <a href="http://music.unt.edu/windstudies/" target="_self">Wind Studies at North Texas</a>. He was on campus conducting at a band event, and popped in to say hello and listen to our show. I spent two years in his ensemble, and I love the rare occasion when I run into him. He was always very supportive of me during my years at UNT, and I have wonderful memories of performing under his baton.</p>
<p><a class="asset-img-link" href="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c01901babaeba970b-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="Messiah 26" class="asset  asset-image at-xid-6a01348556cb46970c01901babaeba970b" src="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c01901babaeba970b-500wi" style="width: 475px;" title="Messiah 26" /></a></p>
<p>Many thanks to Mike for providing this opportunity to perform for the students of Messiah College! </p><xhtml:img xmlns:xhtml="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/loudlife/~4/YkLPc24q5oQ" height="1" width="1" /></div></content>

<content type="xhtml" xml:lang="en-US" xml:base="http://www.laureneuph.com/my_blog/"><div xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><p>Scuba diving has been on my bucket list for a long time. I grew up seeing my Dad and older brothers dive, and it's something I always knew I'd love. Brendan and I intended to get certified before our Honeymoon, but wedding planning got a little crazy, so we decided to wait until the Spring. We were happy to be joined by our friend <a href="http://www.robmciverphoto.com" target="_self">Rob</a>, who caught the scuba bug while on vacation in St. Croix.</p>
<p>The three of us took classes at <a href="http://marylandscubacenter.com" target="_self">Maryland Scuba Center</a> in Annapolis, then drove to Crystal River, Florida, for checkout dives. Whenever I learn a new skill, it's tempting to compare it to learning music. After all, music is probably the thing I've spent most of my life working on. So here are four things I thought about during our long drive to Florida and back. </p>
<p><strong>1. Gotta know the fundamentals. </strong></p>
<p>In scuba, understanding the fundamentals can save your life. Properly controlling your ascent, knowing how to communicate with hand signals...we studied, reviewed and were tested on these things. Going over something repeatedly makes it that much easier for a panicking brain to access later. This makes me think of all the time musicians spend practicing scales, intervals, and flow studies. There are so many reasons we work on these things, but I think one of the most important is so we can fall back on the cornerstones of playing during difficult moments. That could be a memory slip in the middle of a performance, it could mean performance anxiety threatening your cool, or it could be when the chops aren't feeling right and it's time to simplify and go back to basics. The fundamentals can save us.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017ee8e1409d970d-pi"><img alt="Scuba" src="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017ee8e1409d970d-500wi" title="Scuba" /></a></p>
<p><strong>2. It's a good idea to practice performing. </strong></p>
<p>Rob, Brendan and I completed several pool dives on the way to earning Open Water Certification. Much of the pool time was spent familiarizing ourselves with the equipment and experiencing, first-hand, the things we learned in the textbook. The Dive Master, Michael, also tested us along the way, checking off our performance of required skills. During our check-out dives, we were asked to perform these skills again, but in an open-water environment. </p>
<p>When we first rolled off the boat into the murky water of the Crystal River, it was disorienting. Visibility was poor, and there were dozens of new variables to concern ourselves with, (such as would we see any elusive manatees)? I was suddenly grateful for the "practice tests" we did in the pool. Without Michael's frequent evaluations, I suspect the final dives would have been quite disorienting. Instead, everything about the check-out dives was identical to what we did in the pool, except the environment. </p>
<p>You can help yourself alot if you take the time to imitate the conditions of performance in your practice. For me, this often means playing for understanding loved ones. It's the same reason we do dress-rehearsals—give yourself a chance to work out the kinks and acclimate your body to the bizarre effects of playing brass music live. Practicing is conditioning, and when it comes to performance, you want your time onstage to feel as familiar and well-prepared as possible. The more comfortable you feel, the less you will be fazed by the inevitable surprises, (like a manatee swimming by during your cadenza). </p>
<p><a href="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017ee8e14185970d-pi"><img alt="Scuba (2)" src="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017ee8e14185970d-500wi" title="Scuba (2)" /></a></p>
<p><strong>3. NEVER STOP BREATHING!</strong></p>
<p>It's the number one rule in scuba, and it's kind of an unofficial rule of brass playing. When your body starts to panic, it naturally wants to conserve air. If you hold your breath while you ascend, the air in your lung expands and can cause an air embolism. You can straight up die if you panic, hold your breath, and try to haul ass to the surface. Scary!</p>
<p>Ever feel like a performance is dying a slow death because you can't catch your breath? It's a terrible feeling, and can be brought on by nerves. While I don't have all the answers about dealing with performance anxiety, I do know that careful preparation can help. Usually you can identify places in the music where you neglect to breathe properly. I often make notes in my music to help me remember what kind of a breath I need to take, or how long I need it to last to make a phrase. I often work with students who don't plan their breathing spots. Either they do it differently every time, which means they haven't thought about the music enough, or they usually breath in the same spot, but it becomes a struggle under duress. Marking in breaths and consciously practicing making phrases can dramatically improve your success in performance. It's all about making breaths part of the music. </p>
<p>
<a class="asset-img-link" href="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017c389a017e970b-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="B scuba" class="asset  asset-image at-xid-6a01348556cb46970c017c389a017e970b" src="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017c389a017e970b-500wi" style="width: 475px;" title="B scuba" /></a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017ee8e14185970d-pi" /><a class="asset-img-link" href="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017c386a6bd3970b-pi" style="display: inline;" /><a class="asset-img-link" href="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017c386a6d18970b-pi" style="display: inline;" /><strong>4. It's more fun with a buddy!</strong></p>
<p>The point of performing music is to connect with others. Although scuba seems like a soloistic activity (just me, a tank &amp; the fishies), it's actually so important to have that second person there. It can save your life, but it also enriches the experience. You want someone there as a witness when you <a href="http://socialsmiling.com/1855_shark-high-five" target="_self">high five a shark</a>!</p>
<p> When it's not going so well, performing can make you feel extremely isolated. You spend all this time alone practicing. Then you get on a stage and the fourth wall seems four feet thick. When nerves take over and you are focused on holding it together, the last thing you are doing is reaching out to the crowd and connecting with them. This agitation can even bring a warped perception of how the audience is responding to your performance. Ever get that sinking feeling that everybody hates your piece and can't wait to sneak out of the hall as soon as possible? I mean, it's possible the audience actually feels that way, but it's highly unlikely. </p>
<p>One of the reasons I like chamber music is that it has a buddy-system built in. You are automatically sharing the experience, good or bad, with another human, and that is powerful. Shared preparation, shared performance, group solidarity—it all helps brings you down to earth. If I can't play with a friend onstage, I like to think of the concert-goers as my partners in the music. If I can open up and invite them into my world for a few minutes, everything inevitably goes smoother and is much more fun. It's not easy to do. It takes vulnerability, and enough preparation to get my head out of the stand. I often miss the mark, but it's always my goal.</p>
<p><img alt="Scuba (7)" class="asset  asset-image at-xid-6a01348556cb46970c017c386a6bd3970b" src="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017c386a6bd3970b-500wi" style="width: 475px;" title="Scuba (7)" /></p>
<p>And it is so worth it for those moments of connection. It's magical—kind of like breathing underwater. </p><xhtml:img xmlns:xhtml="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/loudlife/~4/i6xWoyHFt-4" height="1" width="1" /></div></content>

I've been holding off on posting about New Orleans, partly due to the climate of uncertainty surrounding Sequestration, but also because it's a little emotional. This trip was amazing. It was the Field Band at it's best—outreach, education, performance, and fun. It was shocking to return to duty and receive the news that we would not be allowed to perform a major part of our mission for the forseeable future. While I fully believe that my career is not who I am, my job is a major outlet for me to focus energy and passion. I love what I do, and I believe in its value. As Soldiers, we are encouraged to put our heads down and work hard, adapting and making the best of things out of our control. At the US Army Field Band, we are certainly doing that. The whole Unit is abuzz with efforts to schedule local performances and find creative ways to reach the American public within the imposed limitations. I am still sad that we won't be performing across the country over the coming months, but I am encouraged by how we are rallying. So, I think I'm ready to tell you about New Orleans.}</p>
<p>For the past few years, the <a href="http://www.armyfieldband.com" target="_self">Field Band</a> has opened up a week in February to focus on chamber ensembles. Rather than meeting for full band rehearsal every day, our small groups are out doing concerts in a variety of places. This year, the Brass Quintet had the opportunity to perform in a state dear to my heart—Louisiana!</p>
<p><a href="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017d416da65e970c-pi"><img alt="BQ SLU 3" src="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017d416da65e970c-500wi" title="BQ SLU 3" /></a></p>
<p>Our first stop was <a href="http://www.selu.edu/acad_research/depts/mus/" target="_self">Southeastern Louisiana University</a> in Hammond. The quintet broke up into like-instruments for informal masterclasses with music majors. Scott and I listed to several tuba and euphonium soloists, offering feedback and and answering questions.</p>
<p><a class="asset-img-link" href="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017c383462b7970b-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="Scott" class="asset  asset-image at-xid-6a01348556cb46970c017c383462b7970b" src="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017c383462b7970b-500wi" style="width: 475px;" title="Scott" /></a></p>
<p>That evening we performed a full recital for an appreciative crowd. There was a nice mix of University students and local citizens in attendance. I love when people take advantage of the arts available in a University town.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017ee8f1332b970d-pi"><img alt="BQ SLU 54" src="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017ee8f1332b970d-500wi" title="BQ SLU 54" /></a></p>
<p>Here I am milking Endearing Young Charms for all it's worth!</p>
<p><a class="asset-img-link" href="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017d417d59de970c-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="BQ SLU 19" class="asset  asset-image at-xid-6a01348556cb46970c017d417d59de970c" src="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017d417d59de970c-500wi" style="width: 475px;" title="BQ SLU 19" /></a></p>
<p>I've spent a lot of time in Louisiana, and three of my five siblings live there now. Yet, somehow, I'd never been to New Orleans before this trip. What's one of the first things a newbie does in NOLA? Beignets at <a href="http://www.cafedumonde.com" target="_self">Café du Monde</a>, of course! It was magical to wander around the city early in the morning, getting a feel for the place, soaking it all in. A quirky Southern city on the water sure feels like home to me.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017ee8f15281970d-pi"><img alt="Quintet blog (2)" src="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017ee8f15281970d-500wi" title="Quintet blog (2)" /></a></p>
<p>The Brass Quintet's second performance was to be at the <a href="http://www.usm.edu/music" target="_self">University of Southern Mississippi</a> in Hattiesburg. Only a few weeks before our trip, a devastating tornado tore through the city. It leveled much of the College of Music, and we weren't sure if our concert would happen. Amazingly, the University dusted itself off and got right to work on recovery. Classes resumed only a few days after the storm, with some of them taking place in unique venues, such as local businesses and churches. This gorgeous Methodist church agreed to host our recital and masterclass for the brass studios class.</p>

<p>The A-frame wood ceiling was surprisingly conducive to brass sound. It was a really nice place to play. Here I am upgrading the quintet to a sextet.</p>
<p><a class="asset-img-link" href="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017ee8f13d79970d-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="BQ at SoMiss 22" class="asset  asset-image at-xid-6a01348556cb46970c017ee8f13d79970d" src="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017ee8f13d79970d-500wi" style="width: 475px;" title="BQ at SoMiss 22" /></a></p>
<p>Ward and Phillip worked with a fantastic graduate student on orchestral excerpts. </p>
<p>
<a class="asset-img-link" href="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017ee8fec646970d-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="BQ at SoMiss 23" class="asset  asset-image at-xid-6a01348556cb46970c017ee8fec646970d" src="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017ee8fec646970d-500wi" style="width: 475px;" title="BQ at SoMiss 23" /></a></p>
<p>I grew up on gumbo, courtbouillon, boudin, cracklins, jambalaya, and seafood of all kinds. I am not ashamed to say that I used this trip as an opportunity to satisfy every Cajun food craving I could. It was a *little* early in the season to get crawfish, but this Maryland transplant had to try. Bob and I split a boat of them. They were wee, but pretty tasty.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017d417d7b02970c-pi"><img alt="Quintet blog (1)" src="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017d417d7b02970c-500wi" title="Quintet blog (1)" /></a></p>
<p>Our third stop was <a href="http://wp.music.lsu.edu" target="_self">Louisiana State University</a>, which boasts a large, successful music school. <a href="http://www.joeskillen.com/index2.php?v=v1" target="_self">Dr. Joe Skillen</a> was our host, and set up a great masterclass where we actually heard and coached student brass quintets. We also held an extended Q&amp;A session where we fielded lots of inquiries about military bands and auditions.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017c374e26a7970b-pi"><img alt="BQ LSU 3" src="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017c374e26a7970b-500wi" title="BQ LSU 3" /></a></p>
<p>After the masterclass, we took the stage for an evening recital performance. I have no idea why the quintet refers to me as "The Diva."</p>
<p><a href="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017c374e29ef970b-pi"><img alt="BQ LSU 15" src="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017c374e29ef970b-500wi" title="BQ LSU 15" /></a></p>
<p>No trip to New Orleans would be complete with out some shenanigans on Bourbon Street. The whole group went out for a nice dinner, and then walked down and back once, enjoying the many sights and sounds, (the smells were a bit unfortunate). I'm glad I took Dan Sherlock's advice not to wear sandals on Bourbon Street. In any event, it was a lot of fun, even though I felt slightly out of place in my relative sobriety.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017ee8f157f7970d-pi"><img alt="Quintet blog (3)" src="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017ee8f157f7970d-500wi" title="Quintet blog (3)" /></a></p>
<p>Our final venue of this mini-tour was the fabulous <a href="http://stlouiscathedral.org" target="_self">St. Louis Cathedral</a>, located right in the heart of the French Quarter. Before we arrived in the city, all we knew was that our last gig was in a church. I don't think any of us were expecting THIS. Not only was the place magnificent, but the concert was also well-advertised and had a large crowd. Performing for the people of the city we'd enjoyed so much was the perfect way to round out a wonderful tour.</p>
<p><a class="asset-img-link" href="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017c374e4a2a970b-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="BQ at NO 5" class="asset  asset-image at-xid-6a01348556cb46970c017c374e4a2a970b" src="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017c374e4a2a970b-500wi" style="width: 475px;" title="BQ at NO 5" /></a></p>
<p>If you want to see more pictures from this trip, visit the <a href="http://www.facebook.com/armyfieldbandbrassquintet" target="_self">Brass Quintet's Facebook Page</a> and check out the photo albums. </p>
<p>
<a class="asset-img-link" href="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017d417d6be4970c-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="BQ at NO 15" class="asset  asset-image at-xid-6a01348556cb46970c017d417d6be4970c" src="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017d417d6be4970c-500wi" style="width: 475px;" title="BQ at NO 15" /></a></p>
<p>Is it any surprise that I spent my last hours in New Orleans eating? You are looking at poached eggs on NOLA french bread with boudin. I might be drooling in this picture, I'm not sure. New Orleans is now on my short list of favorite cities.</p>
<p><a class="asset-img-link" href="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017d417d7c7f970c-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="Quintet blog" class="asset  asset-image at-xid-6a01348556cb46970c017d417d7c7f970c" src="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017d417d7c7f970c-500wi" style="width: 475px;" title="Quintet blog" /></a></p>
<p>The best part of this trip was working alongside six of my favorite people. I am honored to make music with each of them, and I am so grateful to Scott, Aaron, Bob, Phillip, Ward &amp; Billy for letting me tag along and be a part of the team. I don't know where my job will take me next, but the road has been good to me so far.</p><xhtml:img xmlns:xhtml="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/loudlife/~4/mnNynf9vfvU" height="1" width="1" /></div></content>

Professional development on the euphonium happens to be a lot of fun. This event is a chance to attend excellent clinics, hear phenomenal performances by guests artists, and perform alongside my colleagues in various ensembles. On Friday night I heard my good friend Chris Buckley perform with the <a href="http://www.usarmyband.com/strings/the_us_army_orchestra.html" target="_self">US Army Orchestra</a>. Chris found orchestral parts to the classic euphonium solo "Fantasia di Concerto" by Eduardo Boccalari. It was the perfect piece to showcase his beautiful sound and crisp, clean technique. I  also think it was a treat for euphonium afficonados to hear this work with orchestra. I was extremely proud of Chris for rocking out so thoroughly. </p>
<p><a class="asset-img-link" href="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017ee8879533970d-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="TUSABTEC (1)" class="asset  asset-image at-xid-6a01348556cb46970c017ee8879533970d" src="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017ee8879533970d-500wi" style="width: 475px;" title="TUSABTEC (1)" /></a></p>
<p>After the orchestra concert, the Inter-service Euphonium Ensemble met to rehearse with Dr. Bowman. This group has become a tradition at TUSABTEW, and I know it is the highlight for many of us. Dr. B always find interesting music, and the passion and enthusiasm he brings to every gathering is infectious. It's also just fun to get together with all your old buddies and toot around on our horns for a couple of hours.</p>
<p><a class="asset-img-link" href="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017d4113b2dd970c-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="TUSABTEC (2)" class="asset  asset-image at-xid-6a01348556cb46970c017d4113b2dd970c" src="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017d4113b2dd970c-500wi" style="width: 475px;" title="TUSABTEC (2)" /></a></p>
<p>On Saturday afternoon the IEE performed our quickily-assembled program for a nice audience of euphonium enthusiasts.</p>
<p>
<a class="asset-img-link" href="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017d4113b426970c-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="TUSABTEC (3)" class="asset  asset-image at-xid-6a01348556cb46970c017d4113b426970c" src="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017d4113b426970c-500wi" style="width: 475px;" title="TUSABTEC (3)" /></a></p>
<p>That's a fair number of euphoniums. Not many places in the world where you could put out the bat-signal and have this many euphs show up.  </p>
<p><a class="asset-img-link" href="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017d40d378dc970c-pi" style="display: inline;" /><a class="asset-img-link" href="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017c36e46339970b-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="Euph Ensemble" class="asset  asset-image at-xid-6a01348556cb46970c017c36e46339970b" src="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017c36e46339970b-500wi" style="width: 475px;" title="Euph Ensemble" /></a></p>
<p>Thank you, Dr. Bowman, for sharing your time and expertise with us!</p>
<p>
<a class="asset-img-link" href="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017c36e469ca970b-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="TUSABTEC (5)" class="asset  asset-image at-xid-6a01348556cb46970c017c36e469ca970b" src="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017c36e469ca970b-500wi" style="width: 475px;" title="TUSABTEC (5)" /></a></p>
<p>Right after the IEE performance, we got to hear the inimitable <a href="http://www.euphonasia.com/ryan.php" target="_self">Ryan McGeorge</a> of the <a href="http://www.marineband.usmc.mil/" target="_self">US Marine Band</a> perform an hour of jazz with the Marine Band Jazz Combo. This was one of the best performances at the conference. Ryan had great tunes, a killer band, and he totally brought it. I think most of us who have perhaps only dipped a toe into the jazz genre were in awe. Ryan might need to work on his stand-up routine though. Only a room full of tuba players could find those jokes funny...</p>
<p>
<a class="asset-img-link" href="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017d4116e07e970c-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="TUSABTEC (7)" class="asset  asset-image at-xid-6a01348556cb46970c017d4116e07e970c" src="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017d4116e07e970c-500wi" style="width: 475px;" title="TUSABTEC (7)" /></a></p>
<p>Right after Ryan's performance, I hopped back onstage to perform with Stars and Stripes, an octet comprised of players from several of the DC military bands.</p>
<p><a class="asset-img-link" href="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017c36e46576970b-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="Stars and Stripes" class="asset  asset-image at-xid-6a01348556cb46970c017c36e46576970b" src="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017c36e46576970b-500wi" style="width: 475px;" title="Stars and Stripes" /></a></p>
<p>Scott Cameron and I represented <a href="http://www.armyfieldband.com" target="_self">The US Army Field Band</a>. This was a fun group, and we played some really tough arrangements. Every year this workshop makes me wish I had a regular tuba quartet to play in.</p>
<p>
<a class="asset-img-link" href="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017ee88aabbf970d-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="TUSABTEC (8)" class="asset  asset-image at-xid-6a01348556cb46970c017ee88aabbf970d" src="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017ee88aabbf970d-500wi" style="width: 475px;" title="TUSABTEC (8)" /></a></p>
<p>But wait, there's more. Later in the afternoon, I was on a panel judging the finals of the Mock Band Audition competition. We heard some outstanding players and each panelist offered verbal and written comments.</p>
<p><img alt="Audition Panel" class="asset  asset-image at-xid-6a01348556cb46970c017d40d378dc970c" src="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017d40d378dc970c-500wi" style="width: 475px;" title="Audition Panel" /></p>
<p>The final event was an evening concert with <a href="http://www.usarmyband.com/" target="_self">The US Army Band</a>. All the soloists were amazing, including <a href="http://www.jamesgourlaytuba.com/" target="_self">James Gourlay</a>, <a href="http://nealcorwell.com/" target="_self">Neal Corwell</a>, and <a href="http://docaskew.com/" target="_self">Dennis Askew</a>. I was particularly thrilled to hear <a href="http://www.annjulieskarpmo.com/" target="_self">Ann-Julie Skarpmo</a>, who is a sister-in-arms from Norway. Ann-Julie is solo euphonium with the Norwegian Army Band North. <a href="http://annjulieskarpmo.wordpress.com/" target="_self">Check out her blog here</a>! </p>
<p>The Workshop ended in the traditional way, with all military participants rallying onstage for a unique rendition of Melody Shop and Them Basses. Chris and I awarded the unofficial Best Uniform prize to this gentleman from a British Military Band. This was largely due to his resemblance to that hero of the final frontier, Captain Jean-Luc Picard, particularly in the Season 1 dress uniform, (such as from Episode 7, "Lonely Among Us").</p>
<p><a class="asset-img-link" href="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017d4116e140970c-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="TUSABTEC (11)" class="asset  asset-image at-xid-6a01348556cb46970c017d4116e140970c" src="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017d4116e140970c-500wi" style="width: 475px;" title="TUSABTEC (11)" /></a></p>
<p>Many thanks to SGM Don Palmire, and all the organizers of the Workshop, for a fabulous week of music and fellowship.</p><xhtml:img xmlns:xhtml="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/loudlife/~4/9Bte2DNI2jY" height="1" width="1" /></div></content>

We actually lead the parade, which begins after the Presidential Escort passes through the streets and Mr. Prez is staged in the reviewing stand. The weeks leading up to January 21st were filled with rehearsals and a bit of media attention. I even got a chance to appear on <a href="http://www.myfoxdc.com/" target="_self">Fox5 DC</a> with the <a href="http://www.armyfieldband.com/pages/sponsor/se_tusafbbq.html" target="_self">Brass Quintet</a>!</p>
<p><iframe frameborder="0" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/q6GgX7ZsWcU" width="420" /> </p>
<p>The buses departed <a href="http://www.ftmeade.army.mil/" target="_self">Fort Meade</a> early in the morning so we could get through security at the Pentagon. Then we were staged in a waiting tent with other parade elements. The Inaugural ceremony and speeches were projected on a screen so we could follow along during the wait. Low Brass Power Couple? Only for one day. </p>
<p><a class="asset-img-link" href="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017ee81caa26970d-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="Inaug (1)" class="asset  asset-image at-xid-6a01348556cb46970c017ee81caa26970d" src="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017ee81caa26970d-500wi" style="width: 475px;" title="Inaug (1)" /></a></p>
<p>The waiting area was near the Washington Monument. All the tour buses for various parade elements unloaded right here, with DC's most recognizeable landmark in the background.</p>
<p>
<a class="asset-img-link" href="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017c367958b4970b-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="Inaug (3)" class="asset  asset-image at-xid-6a01348556cb46970c017c367958b4970b" src="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017c367958b4970b-500wi" style="width: 475px;" title="Inaug (3)" /></a></p>
<p>Brendan really embraced his role as Tuba Holding NCO. </p>
<p>
<a class="asset-img-link" href="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017ee81cab75970d-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="Inaug" class="asset  asset-image at-xid-6a01348556cb46970c017ee81cab75970d" src="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017ee81cab75970d-500wi" style="width: 475px;" title="Inaug" /></a></p>
<p>It was a long day, but infinitely more pleasant than last time, thanks to the mild weather. It's great to be a part of these historical events, though they do take a lot of behind-the-scenes work. I've only experienced two Inaugurals so far, but I have a feeling they will all be memorable in their own way. Here is footage of the <a href="http://www.armyfieldband.com" target="_self">US Army Field Band</a> marching past the reviewing stand. </p>

It is already showing signs of being a busy year. The first event I must tell you about is a performance I did on January 11th with the <a href="http://www.riverhillmusic.org/River_Hill_Music/HOME.html" target="_self">River Hill High School Wind Ensemble</a> in Clarksville, Maryland. I played <em>Napoli</em>, conducted by <a href="http://www.columbiabands.org/bands_CCBdirectorbio.html" target="_self">Michael Blackman</a>. I first came across this high-speed band program when I did a clinic at River Hill with the <a href="http://www.armyfieldband.com/pages/sponsor/se_tusafbbq.html" target="_self">Brass Quintet</a>. The students are just oustanding. When Head DIrector Joe Fischer invited me to perform on the River Hill Winter Concert, I was beyond thrilled.</p>

<p>My first experiences in music were with a public school band program. It is no exaggeration to say that those early days discovering music were life-changing. Later, as a private lesson teacher in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, I spent much of my time working with young students just like the ones at River Hill High School. I know first hand that the joy of music-making is a force for good in every one of these kids lives. I know the dedicated teachers encouraging them to work hard and persevere are enriching their characters on a daily basis.</p>
<p><a class="asset-img-link" href="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017c36752f5a970b-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="DSC_6711" class="asset  asset-image at-xid-6a01348556cb46970c017c36752f5a970b" src="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017c36752f5a970b-500wi" style="width: 475px;" title="DSC_6711" /></a></p>
<p>I sit in a band and play my horn every day. It's my job, so I occasionally forget how magical it is. When I snuck into the audience to hear the Symphonic Band play, I was moved by having all those young people on stage producing such beautiful music. Some of them only picked up these pieces of metal and wood a few short years ago, and now they are making art together. It's really incredible, if you think about it. I know music educators do this tough job every day, and the nuts and bolts of teaching instruments don't always feel glamorous. But trust me, it's an amazing thing.</p>
<p><a class="asset-img-link" href="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017d40a39b5a970c-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="DSC_6712" class="asset  asset-image at-xid-6a01348556cb46970c017d40a39b5a970c" src="http://www.laureneuph.com/.a/6a01348556cb46970c017d40a39b5a970c-500wi" style="width: 475px;" title="DSC_6712" /></a></p>
<p>I had a blast working on Napoli with this group. The kids play at such a high level that I could just relax and perform. Here I am cheesing it up with the euphonium section backstage. </p>
<p>

<p>I slipped into the section for the final grande finale. The whole evening was a treat for me. I am grateful for the opportunity to solo, but even more glad I could interact with this wonderful group of young players.</p>

<p>Many thanks to Band Parent Inga Swanner for the great pictures!</p><xhtml:img xmlns:xhtml="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/loudlife/~4/1fpaq2tBdJU" height="1" width="1" /></div></content>
