DIY Paper Wall Hanging

I've finally finished this paper wall hanging for above our bed! This project was inspired by Style Me Pretty's DIY Wax Paper Backdrop. I loved the look of the wax paper backdrop, but I didn't want it to become washed out against the white wall.

I only made a few changes to the original tutorial. Instead of half a circle, I used a full circle of paper to make my cones. After some experimenting I realised that I liked the look of wider cones better :) I also just tied the paper to a branch I'd spray painted silver, to stand out from the wall, and because I had less space for my wall hanging than the original backdrop in the tutorial!

Have you tried to make this project too? I like it, even though it's abstract, I still think it looks nice :)

Light and Easy Banana Walnut Muffins

So I've finally gotten around to baking again. I actually quite enjoy baking, but I don't always have the opportunity to photograph the finished product. I've made these muffins many times before, and they're always a favourite. You can also add chocolate chips to the recipe if you like your muffins a bit sweeter :)

Recipe from James St Cooking School.

Ingredients

1 ½ cups plain flour

1 cup castor sugar

1 pinch salt

½ tsp baking powder

½ tsp bicarbonate of soda

1 tsp cinnamon

4 egg whites

3 large ripe bananas (about 1 cup)

½ cup light olive oil

¼ cup low fat yoghurt

¼ cup roughly chopped walnuts

Preheat your oven to 190°C. Sift the dry ingredients into a mixing bowl.

Whisk the egg whites with a fork until slightly frothy, and add to dry ingredients.

Stir in banana, oil, yoghurt and nuts and mix lightly until combined.

Spoon the mixture into the tins.

Bake for approximately 20 minutes or until golden and firm to touch on top.

Transfer to a wire rack to cool.

Eat warm with a cold glass of milk on the side ;)

First of all, sorry for the mini-hiatus! I've been doing lots of crazy hours at work lately, so I haven't had as much time as I'd like to dedicate to the projects I have on the go. I'm aiming to make time every day to work on the things I'd like to be working on :)

So, onto the point of this post. I am crazy in love with Free People. So many of their clothes are so amazing, and one day I hope to be able to buy even a few of the pieces that I have my eye on.

Cushion Obsession

Moving out into our own little apartment has made me realise something. I am overly obsessed with cushions. We already have three on each couch, and three on our bed (plus four pillows!) But I still trawl the internet late at night, eyeing off cushions. It doesn't matter if they don't fit our apartment 'theme' or if we already have too many (which is a possibility). I still want them all. These are just some of the ones I've been eyeing off lately.

1/ This cushion is just the cutest thing ever!
2/ Before I was a crazy cushion lady, I was a crazy cat lady. Enough said.
3/ This definitely needs to be an addition to our couch.
4/ Cute birds with a vintage hand drawn vibe. Super cute.

I'm also still clearly in the middle of my love affair with neutrals. I don't think I'll ever really be overly colourful :) Although in our new apartment, we've been trying to use splashes of pale green every now and then. I feel like it makes things feel a bit fresher.

Is anyone else out there a cushion addict? Or have you found yourself moving into a new place, and suddenly become obsessed with a particular item?

Our Wedding: Reception

We had such a fun time at our wedding reception, and I'm pretty sure our guests did too (if I do say so myself!) Our aim was to try and create many of the details of the reception ourselves, but for it to still remain elegant and sophisticated. We made our own wedding cake, stationery, table numbers, signing frame, wishing well, and so much more. The food was fantastic (thanks to Fix Restaurant and Wine Bar!) as was the rest of the venue, which made it so much easier for us to relax, and actually enjoy the night :)

Hello! We're finally back from our honeymoon and up and running again. We are both straight back into work, but I think that can't be helped. We did just have a one month holiday!

Dave and I chose to have our wedding in the Brisbane City Botanic Gardens. We'd always dreamed about getting married under a giant tree, and it worked out very well.

Despite being a fairly clear morning, when I arrived at the ceremony it was raining lightly. We were glad that the tree offered a little bit of protection from the rain.

It was so lovely and heart-warming to have so many of our family and friends there to help us celebrate and enjoy our day, we couldn't have been happier.

One of the things that helped make our day such a memorable event for us was that so many of the elements of our wedding were done ourselves. I made my own hairpiece and shoes, and we both designed, printed, cut and packaged all of our stationery, including save the dates, invitations, menus etc. Looking back on these memories makes all of the work so worthwhile.

Honeymoon

Hello everyone :) Sorry about the lack of posts lately. We've been so busy with our wedding, then leaving for our honeymoon the day after! We arrived in Scotland today, and leave the day after tomorrow. We're about halfway through our road trip now. I'll leave you with some photos from our trip so far.

My Wonderful Bachelorette Day

Over the weekend I took some time off work to celebrate my bachelorette/hens day and night. Our wedding is less than three weeks away now, so things are about to get a lot more busy around here. Two of my bridesmaids, Esther and Merrin, spent the morning with me enjoying a champagne breakfast.

Did you notice our cat Fang in the above photo? He was trying to sneak some strawberries!

After breakfast we drove up to Montville, in the Sunshine Coast hinterland to Flame Hill Vineyard for an afternoon wine tasting and cheese platter. Montville is a small town about two hours drive from Brisbane. It's also absolutely beautiful, and it's one of my favourite places to go whenever I have the time.

I had such a nice day, and it didn't start raining until we started to drive home! After we got home we got changed and went out for cocktails, which was lovely, even though it was busy.

It's not too much longer now until I can blog about our wedding and honeymoon :) I can't wait to be Dave's wife.

Dip Dye Inspiration

I think I'm a bit late to the party, but I'm slowly falling in love with all things dip dye and ombre. Some of my work friends and I are experimenting with dip dying this weekend, it should be lots of fun (and possibly quite messy). I'll be sure to post the results here! I'm so happy I've made friends at work, especially crafty ones :) Below I've posted my main inspirations for this weekend's dip dying session.

'Wedding Season' Must Haves

With just over a month to go until our wedding, it's safe to say that things are getting pretty busy around here (not to mention just a little bit stressful). There's signage to finish, gifts to buy, styling to finalise, dress fittings, honeymoon planning, a bachelorette party and more. On top of that we are both working full time and trying our best to make time to spend with each other. Phew!

Here are my top 'wedding season' must haves:

Physicians Formula concealer in green and yellow because with all the early mornings paired with late nights (with a few overnight shifts mixed in) I definitely need all the concealing I can get!
Klorane gentle dry shampoo for when I'm too busy (or lazy?) to wash my hair.
Put A Bow On It flats are grey, and have bows on them. Two of my favourite things. What more can I say?
Buffalo studded notebook because I have way too many loose pieces of paper floating around in my handbag.
Green Tea X50 is delicious, packed with antioxidants, and is so easy to mix on the go!

Most of all, I'm relying heavily on this guy:

Because lets face it, without him, none of this would be possible. At the end of the day, I will become his wife, and that's what matters the most to me. I can't wait! :)

Salmon and Leek Risotto

Hi there! Sorry it has been so long since I last posted, I've been so busy with work and planning our wedding. It's getting to the stage where Dave can help me organise things which is nice, as he's been asking if there's anything he can do for a while now.

Luckily, Dave is an amazing cook, and is inexplicably good at making up recipes off the top of his head. He has been cooking for us a lot lately, something for which I count myself very lucky. I cook, but usually straight from a recipe, because I'm too scared of messing it up.I don't think he's ever cooked a meal that I didn't like. Yes I'm biased, but I swear it's true :) This recipe is adapted from an old one that my mum had on hand, which Dave didn't quite like because of the little bones that tend to come in cans of salmon.

To make Dave's super tasty salmon and leek risotto, you will need:

1 leek
1 clove of garlic
2 salmon fillets (skin off)
4 1/2 teaspoons vegetable stock powder
1 1/2 cups arborio rice
60 grams butter
1/2 cup parmesan cheese
chives to garnish

First, you will need to put about 7 cups water and the stock powder in a pot, and put it on to boil. While it's boiling chop the leek and garlic fairly fine. Then add the garlic to the stock.

Once the stock has boiled, bring the temperature down a little. Place the salmon fillets in stock and simmer for 5 - 6 minutes.
Scoop the salmon out of the stock and put it aside on a plate. Take the stock off the heat and put it aside also. In a separate, heavy-based pot, melt the butter with a dash of oil, then put the leek in to cook.
Once the leek has started to soften, pour the rice in and make sure it is coated with the butter, oil and leek. Add a dash of salt and pepper to taste.
Once the rice is coated, bring the temperature to a low - medium low heat and add two ladles of the stock. Once that has absorbed into the rice, add another. Keep doing this until all the stock is gone or the rice has completely cooked (about 6 or 7 cups). Make sure you stir occasionally to ensure all the rice is cooked evenly.
While the rice is cooking, separate the salmon into flakes.

Once you have finished cooking the rice, stir through the salmon, then the parmesan.
You're all done! Garnish with freshly picked chives to serve. Enjoy!

This has fast become one of my favourite, and most-requested meals that Dave cooks for me. I hope you love it too :) Do you have a favourite meal your loved one cooks for you?

I'm so sorry for the lack of posts. Life has been a bit all over the place lately. The temporary job contract that I am on ends in a few weeks. I haven't yet organised what I'll be doing after that. I have just applied to do an online Diploma of Commercial Arts (Interior Design and Decorating), which is quite exciting. I'm looking forward to studying something again. Hopefully I will be able to work more on my blog posts once I've finished doing the calligraphy for our wedding invitations :)

It's almost Autumn in Australia. Summer went by so quickly!

Weekend Wall Art

My fiance has been working on both Saturday and Sunday for the past few weeks, so this weekend just gone I decided to make a few things to spice up our (very bare) walls. I have seen lots of inspiration for 'string art' recently, and thought I would give it a go. I was quite happy with the results. As for the key holders, Dave is always losing his keys, so I thought this would be a cute way to make sure he doesn't lose them from now on!

Resolutions

I have never really written down any new years resolutions or goals before. This year I thought it might as well be a good time to start!

My goals for 2013:

- Be a calm bride.
This goal is really important to me. I am basically planning most of our wedding myself (by choice) as well as designing all stationery and making our wedding cake. I am thoroughly enjoying it, but I know how easy it would be to make myself stress. Although, at the end of the day, I will be married to my love, so that's all that matters :)

- Take more photos (and display them.)
I would really like to try and take photos more often and hang them in our room. Our walls are very blank at the moment!

- Blog more often.
My aim is to try and blog a few times a week, and work on more DIY and wedding posts.

- Fill a sketch book.
I believe that this will help me develop my handwriting and drawing to a level that I am happy with. I'll have to see how it goes though!

- Organise more date nights.
Because I took two months off work, we haven't been able to have date nights and outings as much as we used to. Now that I'm working again, I'm looking forward to it greatly. Hopefully we will be able to organise a night to do something together once a week.

Happy new year :) I hope everyone has had a safe holiday so far.

Just before the new year we moved into my fiance's old room at his parents house.

This was mainly to be able to save as much money for our wedding as possible (which seems a whole lot closer now that it is 'this year' instead of 'next year'!)

It gave me a good excuse to rearrange my 'desk' all ready for a new start to the year.

I thought I would share a couple of quick photos of my new set up. Excuse the quality of the photos, I took them on my phone and could have possibly had better light.

DIY Body Scrub

Hi there, I hope you had a good Christmas!
I thought I would start posting a few of the gifts that I made for my family over the past few weeks.
The instructions for this DIY can be found here.

I made this for my soon to be sister-in-law, and she loved it. She even asked if she could eat it because it smelled so good! The only change that I made was to use sweet almond oil instead of regular almond oil, because I didn't want a giant bottle of almond oil sitting around at home. The only difference I noticed was that I didn't get the organic sort of smell that Rhiannon described. Once I had finished making the scrub, I printed out the labels I had made and used Mod Podge to stick them to the jar.

What did you do for Christmas? Did you make any gifts for friends and family?

I came across this tutorial last week and thought that I would try it out for myself.
It was so easy to do!

I modified mine slightly from the original and sprayed the front flap with silver spray paint when I was finished, to dress it up a little.

Christmas Tags

I was looking through Pinterest the other day and found myself inspired by this card.

I decided to make some gift tags in a similar sort of style. I've included instructions in case you wanted to make your own gift tags :) You could do all different shapes of baubles, or even something else, such as a Christmas tree.

What you will need:

Card for tags and decorations

Stamp pad

Scalpel

Glue

Cut out your card into the shape of the decoration that you want, as well as cutting out some tags.

Next, take your stamp pad and gently run it along the edges of your shapes. You will need to do them in groups of three or more.

They will look something like this. Then, you will need to fold the shapes in half, making sure to leave one flat.

Then, glue the folded shapes together. Once they have dried, glue them along the fold to the flat shape that you have remaining.

Glue the final shape to your tag, punch a hole and attach some string, then you are done!
