Fake social media followers have been getting a new wave of media attention due to the research of Andrea Stroppa and Carlo De Micheli as reported by the NY Times. Now they're saying 50 Cent and Diddy have fake followers as do a number of big brands and politicians. However, only one reporter seems to have seen the research or the list and she shares relatively little information which seems rather odd.

Last month a post on a NY Times blog titled "Fake Twitter Followers Become Multimillion-Dollar Business" got quite a bit of attention among tech and social media circles on the web. It claimed that two "Italian security researchers," Andrea Stroppa and Carlo De Micheli, had been:

"investigating the underground economy for Twitter followers and said they had found a thriving market...estimate that there are now as many as 20 million fake follower accounts...[and] that fake Twitter followers offered potential for a $40 million to $360 million business."If that's correct and if estimates of 500 million existing accounts are correct that puts fake follower accounts on Twitter at 4%. I can't decide if that's a lot or a little given the nature of the Web.

Last week Andrea Stroppa and Carlo De Micheli were back in the news and Nicole Perlroth is again reporting on their research for the NY Times:

"In a follow-up to their earlier report, two Italian security researchers, Andrea Stroppa and Carlo De Micheli, call out Twitter accounts that added or lost a large number of followers in one day. Their list includes brands like Pepsi, Mercedes-Benz and Louis Vuitton; politicians like Newt Gingrich, Representative Jared Polis and Dmitri Medvedev, the Russian prime minister; and the rappers 50 Cent and Sean Combs, known as Diddy."

Sudden increases and decreases in social media follower and view numbers on a large scale is a typical method for identifying fakes. For example, that's one of the factors that led me to conclude that BAKER'S YouTube views are fake.

Regarding fake followers of Diddy and 50 Cent:

"The researchers also call out Diddy, whose verified @iamdiddy account gained 185,399 Twitter followers one day last June — a 3,063 percent increase from the account’s average daily gain — and then inexplicably lost 393,665 followers one day last month, 6,504 percent more that his average daily follower loss. A representative for Mr. Combs did not return a request for comment."

"Likewise, 50 Cent lost more than 190,342 Twitter followers over the course of one day last January, a 5,370 percent jump from his average daily follower loss. A representative for 50 Cent did not respond to a request for comment."

Given the fakery and spam that characterizes hip hop media on the web, something I observed at close hand for a number of years in the Oughts, it's not that surprising that 50 and Diddy would have a bunch of fake followers at various points in time.

But it would be a bit more interesting to get a look across major stars' accounts and to combine that with an analysis of how many of the current accounts are active. Of course, that's a lot of research.

What's odd to me is that the only person who seems to have seen this research is Nicole Perlroth. For example, Andrea Stroppa's Twitter account links to her articles but not to a location for checking out his methodology or results that I can find. The actual research doesn't seem to be available publicly and other writers simply link to Perlroth. I've got a tweet and email in to Stroppa. I'll update with whatever he shares.

Update: Though Stroppa has been responding to individuals on Twitter, I have not heard from him by Twitter or by email. Honestly, this looks at least as suspicious as 50 Cent and Diddy's Twitter followers. However, most people on the web don't really care and I'm leaving it at that given that the "research findings" are basically a rehash of old news. Let's consider it additional food for thought.

Dancer-rapper Alesha Dixon has been giving sleepless nights to many people across the globe ever since she became a judge on the reality TV show Britain's Got Talent. The latest man to go mad over her beauty is none other than American rapper Curtis James Jackson III, who better known by his stage name 50 Cent. He wants to take her out on to party during his next visit to the city.

50 Cent has been watching her on Britain's Got Talent and he wants to take Dixon on a date. Talking to the newspaper Daily Star, the 37-year-old rapper said, "I saw the judge Alesha and I was like 'Damn, she is hot'. I'm single at the moment and you better believe that next time I'm over in Britain I am taking her out to party."Meanwhile, The Get Rich or Die Tryin musician revealed his disappointment over not being able to watch the TV show in the US. "Ever since the Susan Boyle audition went crazy, over here people have been following 'Britain's Got Talent'. We don't get the show, but news channels always pick up the big acts and we catch it online," Daily Star quotes 50 Cent as saying.

It should be recalled here that fellow judge Simon Cowell had joked earlier this month she has a crush on him. He had said, "She's strong and feisty, she can stand up to all of us and she has a crush on me." Now, it should be seen whether Alesha Dixon would head 50 Cent's wish and fulfill it or not.

While Justin Bieber got slammed for leaving an arrogant comment on the guestbook at the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam a few days ago, 50 Cent didn't think the 19-year-old singer did anything wrong. "She probably would have been [a belieber]," 50 Cent told Vulture at the premiere of new movie "Pain and Gain" on Tuesday, April 16.

Not only did he defend Bieber, but 50 Cent also supported the pop star's career. He believed that Bieber was talented that he could reach the potential of the late Michael Jackson. He continued, "He can be one of those guys who can eventually transition like that."

Mark Wahlberg, who was present at the same premiere, also sided with the ex-boyfriend of Selena Gomez. Wahlberg told the magazine, "I think it's best to put down the phone and Twitter and all that stuff, and just be a little more low-key right now. Because they're watching every move he makes, everything he says, and less is more. Go take a vacation."

Even Anne Frank's stepsister, Eva Schloss, thought that the Canadian star's comment wasn't a big deal. She told The Telegraph, "She probably would have been a fan. Why not? He's a young man and she was a young girl, and she liked film stars and music. They make a lot of fuss about everything that is connected with Anne Frank."

Previously, Bieber caused a stir after visiting Anne Frank museum in Amsterdam on Friday, April 12. He left a note on the guestbook, which read, "Truly inspiring to be able to come here. Anne was a great girl. Hopefully she would have been a belieber."
Video streaming site VEVO tapped G-Unit leader 50 Cent for the latest installment of its “Music Is My Sport” original series. In the nearly four-minute clip, 50 shares his story of rising from the streets of New York to becoming a platinum selling rapper, multimillionaire, and most recently a boxing promoter. “Boxing is very similar to rap. It’s the instincts. It’s the training. It’s the discipline that’s involved with it. The absolute focus that’s necessary for you to win,” says 50. “You ain’t got no teammates. You’re out there alone.”

The South Jamaica, Queens native also talks about his upcoming 5th LP Street King Immortal. It has been four years since 50 released his last studio album, 2009′s Before I Self Destruct. 50 has dropped 3 mixtapes since then including the DJ Drama hosted The Lost Tape: Gangsta Grillz in 2012. VEVO previously featured R&B singer-songwriter Ne-Yo in his own “Music Is My Sport” video in 2012.

50 Cent and Kendrick Lamar Kick It Poolside For 'We Up' was a top story. Here is the recap: (Radio.com) 50 Cent shows off his life of luxury in his latest Street King Immortal music video, for the song "We Up," which also features Kendrick Lamar.

The duo are shown relaxing in a Hollywood Hills pad with a group of ladies draped over plush leather couches and sipping champagne. Fur rugs, expensive-looking art and a single case of cash are all the décor 50 needs to make the modern mansion a home.

The clip takes viewers poolside in front of stunning (but smoggy) L.A. views, where K.Dot jumps in for his verse. Both rappers get a little groovy, but the scene is certainly no house party – just some pals casually soaking up the glamorous life and showing off their riches. The Eif Rivera-directed clip perfectly captures Fif's sentiment: "They don't do it how we do/N***** ain't on the sh*t we on/Everything new/Spikes on the Louboutins."

50 Cent's most prized asset in his venture as a boxing promoter is Yuriorkis Gamboa, hence his recent search for a big money superfight. That super fight was supposed to be against Adrien Broner. Broner has recently declared himself a welterweight and will move up two divisions to face Paulie Malignaggi in June.

Since Gamboa is way too short to be a welterweight at a whopping 5'5", it's best he stay at super featherweight as there's another superfight coming his way in the form of Nonito Donaire. Donaire is currently finishing his reign at junior featherweight by facing Guillermo Rigondeaux on April 13. Should Donaire emerge victorious, he has stated to Boxing Scene that he will move up to featherweight.

That's one division below Gamboa, and unlike the plentiful list of contenders at junior featherweight that Donaire chewed through in almost one year, the featherweight division is barren. After subtracting friendships (WBO champ Mikey Garcia) and victims of boxing politics (Abner Mares and Daniel Ponce De Leon), longtime WBA champ Chris John is the only option left.

Though Chris John hasn't flown to fight in the U.S. in years, he has shown a willingness to fight outside his home country of Indonesia in neighboring countries as far as Singapore or even Australia. With Donaire's promoter Top Rank holding a fight card on April 6 in Macau, China, they're clearly trying to get into the Asian market, hence a John vs. Donaire card in August is quite possible and even likely.

With that said, Gamboa is the mandatory challenger to WBA super featherweight champ Takashi Uchiyama. Uchiyama may be a tough opponent, but he's never faced anyone as fast or elite as Gamboa.

Uchiyama fights again in May, but Gamboa can face him in the fall or maybe even on the same card as John vs. Donaire later in the year just to hype an eventual showdown with the winner. Gamboa's promoter 50 Cent has a good working relationship with Top Rank, as exemplified by Gamboa's last fight being on the Pacquiao vs. Marquez IV undercard.

Donaire is a fighter who is making his career by racking up championships in steadily higher and higher weight classes. If 50 Cent and Gamboa are patient, they'll win Uchiyama's belt and cash in on the moment when Donaire moves up to a weight that's higher than he can handle.

He's right at home rapping "In da Club" . . . ("We gon' sip Bacardi like it's your birthday!"). But these days 50 Cent is just as comfortable on QVC, where he says he sold $300,000 worth of headphones in less than 10 minutes.

50 Cent is a study in contradictions. He's a former drug dealer who has sold more than 32 million albums. But he made his first serious money investing in water. 50 Cent saw the "energy water" wave coming, and laid it out to his business partner.

"I said, 'Look, this is what I want to do.' Boom! Put 'em on the table. 'I want to sell water.' And he was like, 'To who?'

"Like, 'To everybody!'" he laughed. In 2004, he invested in Glaceau Vitamin Water, and when Coca-Cola bought the brand a few years later, it's estimated 50 Cent made $60 million off the deal. "I've heard so many numbers," he demurred. But was it a good deal? "It was great."

50 Cent's early life was not so great. He was born Curtis Jackson, in Queens, N.Y., to a single mom who made a living selling drugs. She died when Curtis was only eight, and he moved in with his grandparents.

"My grandparents were a representation of doing it the right way, but we were completely struggling," he said, while his mom's friends, the drug dealers, had what he described as "financial freedom." "I was trying to figure out how to do it myself. This is why so early I got involved."

Curtis started dealing drugs when he was 12 years old. He saw music as his ticket out, and by the spring of 2000, he had a record deal, and a new rap name: 50 Cent.

Still, street life wasn't so easy to escape. In front of the house where his grandma was tending the garden, 50 Cent was shot nine times. There are still bullet fragments in his body, including in his tongue. "Yeah, my voice is different from what it was like prior to that event."

"So you have a reminder, every time you open your mouth?" asked Smith. "Yeah. Or I look in the mirror, I see a little crease in the side."

But 50 turned his notoriety into best-selling albums -- and business opportunities, from clothing to books to movies, where he's written, produced and starred alongside actors like Robert De Niro. And now he's getting into the boxing ring, as a promoter. He's signed five fighters, hoping to bring a younger audience to the sport.

"Is your investment in boxing an emotional thing, or is there money to be made here?" asked Smith. "Well, I mean, it's both," he replied. "I mean, I'm invested financially, but it's more. I get a chance to live vicariously through them."

But he hasn't left music behind. He's been in the studio, working on his first album in three years. "It feels like magic," he said. "Feels like magic to create something that is just my idea.""Despite everything that you've accomplished, you know that there are still people out there who are going to see you as a thug," Smith said. "Right. And I don't mind that," 50 Cent said.

"You don't? Why not?"
"They don't matter. Those are the people, they didn't support me to begin with."Still, at 37 years old, 50 Cent is thinking about his legacy. He traveled to East Africa last year with the United Nations World Food Program, and now he donates a meal for every bottle he sells of his new energy drink. "We're almost at four million meals," he said. And if the thug image helps make the sale -- that's just fine with 50.

50 Cent knows the business and he knows it well enough to understand the significance of participating in media coverage before an album release- even if it’s revamped with just a couple fresh details.

The G-Unit founder reappears on his VH1 ‘Behind the Music’ special tonight (March 20) to divulge the details of his ‘We Up’ video shoot with Aftermath’s Kendrick Lamar as well as his thoughts on the passing of heralded hip hop entrepreneur and friend Chris Lighty. In addition to these tidbits, 50 will be showing some behind the scenes moments while prepping his upcoming ‘Street King’ LP.

The ongoing war between Floyd Mayweather and 50 Cent has been amazing to watch. Whereas neither one wants to acknowledge that they are actually feuding, it couldn’t possibly be more obvious that this is the case.

50 Cent uses every single media appearance he makes as an opportunity to bash Mayweather. And he does it in a really slimy way. Rather than manning up and saying, ‘I don’t like this dude,’ he pretends that they are on good terms and then takes little jabs at Mayweather’s attitude, personality, etc. One day he’s petty, the next he cares more about other people’s money than his own. Meanwhile, Mayweather’s response to 50 Cent’s constant barrage of shots has been silence. He has been so quiet, in fact, that one might believe he doesn’t actually have any problems with his former BFF. Make no mistake about it, though, there’s a reason why these two aren’t joint at the hip anymore.

That being said, Mayweather isn’t the only person in boxing who doesn't like 50 Cent these days. During a recent interview with MadBoxing, Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer blasted the Queens-bred rapper for starting rumors about Adrien Broner’s future with the promotion.

“Adrien is part of a long-term deal with us and he has a long-term deal with Al Haymon as well. So I don't know who's spreading those rumors but whoever is doing that is probably 50 Cent. He better be careful because he's a guy who really doesn't know what he's doing,” Schaefer said.

“He might be a talented music guy but as a businessman, you have to look at his record. I mean, the Vitamin Water, that was like sheer luck. It was not because of his brains he got involved and you look at his record label, how many guys does he still have signed? When did he do his last concert? C'mon, now this guy wants to get into boxing?

“And now he's trying to go after our fighters? Good luck.”50 Cent is world renowned for his ability to get under people’s skin and soak up attention for that, but at a certain point it becomes all you’re known for. He’s very, very close to that point right now. It would be great if this dude would take his boxing future seriously and stop instigating random problems with Mayweather and Golden Boy. However, based on everything we’ve seen from him thus far, it’s probably safe to say that avoiding drama isn’t in 50’s plans.
