Mochi - Japanese New Year Food

One of the common dish during Japanese New Year is mochi or rice cake made from glutinous rice.

The Kagami mochi (鏡餅), literally mirror rice cake, is a traditional Japanese New Year decoration. It usually consists of two round mochi where the smaller placed atop the larger, and a daidai (a Japanese bitter orange) with an attached leaf on top.

Osechi - New Year's Food

In Japan, during new year, the common food is called osechi-ryori, which are colorful dishes that are packed in layers of lacquer boxes, called jubako.Each dish and ingredient in osechi has meanings, such as good health, good harvest, happiness, prosperity, long life, and so on.

Common dishes are kobumaki (simmered kombu rolls), kuromame (simmered black soy beans), kurikinton (mashed sweet potato with sweet chestnuts), tazukuri (candied dried sardines), and so on. Gobo (burdock), renkon (lotus roots), shrimps are often used ingredients.

Tebasaki, delicious chicken wings

Another famous foods in Nagoya is tebasaki (手羽先). Tebasaki is a fried chicken wing. Tebasaki can be found in any Izakaya (居酒屋）in Japan really while in Nagoya, tebasaki is covered with pepper and spices. One of the famous shop selling tebasaki is Sekai no Yama-chan.

What is your favourite dish? Mine is definitely tonkatsu (豚カツ, とんかつ, or トンカツ) which is deep-fried breaded pork cutlet. It is very famous in Nagoya where it is served with popular miso-based sauce known as Hacchoumiso 八丁味噌. Tonkatsu is regularly eaten with a bowl of white rice together with a bowl of miso soup. There are several good miso-katsu restaurants in Nagoya, and one of the most popular restaurants is Miso Katsu Yabaton (みそかつ矢場とん) located in Osu (大須) and all around Nagoya.

With the bright colourful leaves, it signals the end of summer and soon the arrival of winter. It is common to go to places packed with people to view red leaves till late night. During the night, all the trees will be decorated with colourful lighting.

Someone recently asked me what is the meaning of salaryman. The term salaryman or サラリーマン refers to someone whose income is salary based; particularly those working for corporations.

It is mainly use by Japanese corporations, and its prevalence in Japanese manga and anime has gradually led to its acceptance in English-speaking countries as a noun for a Japanese white-collar businessman.

So everyday during working rush hour, it is common to see salarymen everywhere in Japan. :-)

[News] Prostate Cancer Could Benefit From PET/CT Scans

It has been revealed in a recent research that prostate cancer risk can be cut with the aid of emissions through the CT/PET scans. The team is of the view that this might soon be able to help them develop a possible cure for this form of the disease.

This has been indicated in three new studies. They are of the view that the possible increase in the use of PET scans. One of these studies was of the view that 5his could be a beneficial tool in finding out about the disease, rather than the other conventional methods such as x-rays and screenings tests.

One study found that C-11 choline PET/CT scans can be used as a staging tool rather than multiple x-rays, but is not necessarily better. Two additional studies support the favorable claims made in recent medical literature about the use of PET scans to evaluate patients with recurrent prostate cancer. These findings are important because distinguishing localized disease recurrence from systemic recurrence is a vital step in optimizing treatment following primary treatment failure. Read more
