Hollywood actress Eva Mendes has revealed how she was bullied when she was a young girl and believes that one of the key reasons for it was, because she showed the bullies too much fear. Eva claims that now, when she is afraid of something, she does not show her fear so that nobody can then pounce on it.

Mendes explained, “I was a gawky, skinny girl with big teeth and that made me an easy target. I had two bullies and they tortured me right through junior high. I could never understand why. Only later I realised I was perhaps showing them my fear and that is what they were pouncing on. I try not to show my fear now.”

She added, “I remember the school athletics coach telling me when running a race never to look back. He said, ‘The race could be lost in that second.’ So I try to live by not looking back. It does not make for much reflection or relaxation — I haven't taken a holiday in years. I am very driven and probably a bit intense.”

Eva continued, “I have regular therapy and do not mind admitting that. There is nothing like walking into a room and talking to someone who has no emotional investment in your life. I love it. I go once a week and, if not, then every two weeks. And if I am away, I phone in. It is so necessary, especially in my business.” Eva Mendes, who is currently dating Drive actor Ryan Gosling, recently praised her mother for doing such a good job in bringing her up.

When she went nude in an advertisement for Calvin Klein's perfume Secret Obsession, it was banned by American censors. She has starred in hit films such as Training Day, Hitch, The Other Guys and The Bad Lieutenant.

Eva, 37, ended an eight-year relationship with her music producer boyfriend George Ausgusto and began dating actor Ryan Gosling last September. They co-star in a new film, The Place Beyond The Pines.

Here she tells GARTH PEARCE what her mother taught her. MY mother, also called Eva, taught me to enjoy being feminine and celebrate being a woman. We women carry a lot of power. I don't ever want to abuse it.

I am not a seducer, tapping guys on the shoulder at a bar. But I do flirt. It goes no further than that. I go to bed with my boyfriend, no one else. It took me a long time to communicate with men because of the sort of teenage insecurity we all have. In my experience, men are attracted to confidence above anything else. It is sexy.

My mom's attitude has helped me. She told me to never hide how I am and just be myself. We all want to change, but would being five inches taller or a dress size smaller make you happier?

I work with what I have. In my first big film, Training Day, I did full nudity. It was fine, because it was not a love scene. It was different with the film We Own The Night with Joaquin Phoenix in 2007 because in the opening scene he is seen kissing my bare breast and putting his hand down my pants.

I was like "Oh, my God, I'm not sure whether I can do this." I told the director: "There's a good little Catholic girl still inside me." He said: "Tell her to go home."

So they made me a strong vodka orange juice and I got on with it. I did think "If I am going to take my mom, I will miss the opening ten minutes of this film."

But, of course, she was fine about it as she has been with all my movies. She probably realised what was going on in my head more than I did. I now love my curves. When I first had them, though, I wondered what was going on. Men were suddenly looking at me and I didn't know why. It was confusing.

When I am voted "sexiest woman" for this and that I dare not take it seriously. Otherwise, what happens when the years move on and you are no longer considered so hot?

I would sooner be judged for my sense of humour or acting skills than sex appeal. When the advert for Secret Obsession was banned from American TV, I felt it was no big deal. One second of a bare breast? Who would have been offended?

My mom also taught me to be polite. I remember it every time I go on a film set and see someone behaving badly or being rude. Too many actors are spoiled. It would have helped them if they had been brought up by my mother!

She raised me almost single handed, because she and my father split up when I was small. I was the last of four, so was left at home with her on my own for part of my young life.

She worked hard and moved apartments regularly around Los Angeles to try to get us in a better neighbourhood with safer streets. She and my father had moved from Cuba to America before the revolution to live a better life. She was determined to make one for me.

I still travel with family photos of when I was young, at home with mom. It makes me feel good and it is like sharing the experience of new cities with my mom. I do volunteer work with children in hospitals but I don't have a maternal bone in my body. So I may never be a mom myself.

Once again a women’s magazine has put out sexy pics of one of our favorite actresses. This time it’s Marie Claire and the actress in question is Eva Mendes. We haven’t seen much of Eva since she started dating Ryan Gosling, her co-star in the upcoming film The Place Beyond the Pines, a movie it seems she really enjoyed making (go figure)…Creativity satisfied… guess that’s one way to put it.

Word to the wise, if you’re a guy with a girlfriend or wife and you like looking at pics of sexy women in magazines but don’t want to get into trouble just get her a subscription to Marie Claire, because they put out almost as many sexy images of female celebs as any men’s magazine out there. I don’t know why, but they do.

Eva tells why she'd rather be sexy than beautiful:
'I prefer the term sexy to beautiful. Because anyone can be sexy. What makes someone really sexy – and you can feel it when they talk to you or even just when they walk into a room – is the sense that they know they have something to contribute. They might be funny, smart or really kind, but they know it and when someone has that strong sense of self-worth, it’s really sexy.'

Eva on therapy:
'I think it’s important to have someone objective in your life who you can trust and discuss things with before they become a problem. I’m the only one in my family who sees a therapist, but I’m probably the one who needs to see one the least!'

Eva on ending a nine-year relationship in her late 30s:
'We’re still so young! Whatever age you’re at, do you want to look back in 10 years’ time and say, 'Oh I was so young and dumb,' and see the opportunities that passed you by? Flash-forwarding to the future really works for me – even if it’s just my tomorrow self telling my today self to get off the couch and do some exercise.'

Accepting compliments is really important, too– even if you don’t agree with them. I’ve never understood why so many women struggle to accept compliments.'

Eva on regrets:
'I’ve taken two words out of my vocabulary – regret and should. I don’t like them. I don’t agree with them, so I don’t allow myself to use them. Really, I don’t regret anything. When I look back at my life, even at decisions that could be considered mistakes, they’re usually the moments I’ve learned most from.'

The actress opened up in the March issue of Marie Claire about her fitness routine and her delight at taking on edgier movie roles, but veered far away from the topic of current beau Ryan Gosling.

“He’s your dream costar,” was the closest that Mendes, 37, got to gushing about Gosling, 31. “I have never felt so creatively satisfied on a film. He’s amazing.”The two costar in upcoming flick “The Place Beyond the Pines.”

Eva Mendes is featured on the cover of the March issue of Marie Claire….though it barely looks like her! Why on Earth they had to do so much Photoshop on her is beyond me, but she pretty much looks like a huge head on a disproportioned body.Good thing she is wearing this bejeweled Spring/Summer 2012 bustier from Dolce and Gabbana, it’s absolutely stunning on her! Well at least the body parts in the image that actually belong to her.Sorry but I doubt her arms are that thin….and her hair looks like it was pasted on as an afterthought. I would love to a see a copy of the original image that was shot for this just to compare what was edited.
