Dunhill Facebook Digital Flipbook

Facebook never ceases to amaze us! One of the most popular social networking websites, Facebook has been used as a marketing medium for international brands for several years. However, that does not seem to have had a negative impact on the marketing capabilities of the website. In fact, Alfred Dunhill, the luxury goods brand recently came up with an innovative method to utilize the marketing potential of Facebook to the max. The results can be seen on the Facebook profile page of the brand.

Using almost 200 still images taken at the historic Nippon Rally held only the week before in Japan, the Dunhill brand has managed to create some sort of digital flipbook and has uploaded the same on Facebook. When you click the picture, the action begins to move along, slowly but surely. Of course, it would have been easier for the brand to simply have uploaded a video. However, the effect of the flipbook cannot be denied; it is certainly a lot prettier than a common video and holds the attention of the viewer. The flipbook is rather notable owing to the fact that it somewhat resembles an extremely slow-moving GIF. Uploading a video, on the other hand, to celebrate the event would have deprived viewers of the experience of re-discovering an uncommon form of art that dates way back to the year 1868 when, according to Wikipedia, the first flipbook was patented. The concept of the flipbook had to be reinvented to suit the Facebook age.

The creative execution of the flipbook is so deceptively simple that you would be at a loss of words to explain why you were not the first person to come up with the idea. The flipbook, which can be viewed when you click through the photo album labeled ‘Rally Nippon x Alfred Dunhill’ at a rapid pace, is pleasantly effective. The sequence of 200 odd images comes to life, forming the effect of moving footage which helps bring to life the vintage car race in Japan. The flipbook was created in-house.

A representative for Holler, the social strategy and activation agency for the Dunhill brand, explained to Creative Review that the idea denotes the essence of the brand, which deals with the creation of incredibly well organized experiences. The representative also stated that Dunhill happens to be the first brand to come up with the idea of a digital flipbook on the Facebook network.

Facebook Tips

Hide users, games, polls, etc.

It quickly gets annoying seeing some users posts, game invites, polls, etc. Hovering your mouse to the right of the post and clicking the Hide button as shown below can hide any post. Once this button is pressed you’ll be prompted with the option to hide that user or in the case of a Facebook application the option to hide that application from ever showing up on your profile.

To unhide someone or unblock an application click the Edit Options link in the bottom right corner of the news feed as shown below.

Greasemonkey and FB Purity

Although Facebook does not allow the ability to hide friends getting new friends messages, friends becoming fans of something, and some application messages they can still be hidden with browser add-ons. If you’re running Mozilla Firefox, Chrome, Opera, or Safari we suggest installing the Facebook Purity add-on.

Update your privacy settings

Click Account in the top right corner of the Facebook window and then click Privacy settings to adjust who is capable of seeing what on your Facebook profile. We highly recommend going through all the privacy settings to verify your privacy is properly protected.

Anything that is not set to friends only or friends of friends can be seen by anyone searching on the Internet. Below is a few things we recommend for most users.

Under Search in Privacy settings uncheck Public Search Results. This will prevent users from finding your account and profile picture in search results such as Google
Under Application settings, make sure you’re only allowing applications you want to have access to your information. Applications that you grant rights to can have access to your Facebook profile information.

Use the Facebook top bar for navigation

Knowing how to properly navigate is vital if you want to get the most out of Facebook. Below is a brief description of each of the available options in the top bar as shown above.

Home (facebook logo) - Clicking this logo will take you to your wall (News Feed) that shows all friends recent posts.

Friend requests - If any friend requests are waiting to be approved this icon will show a notification of how many friends are waiting for approval. This icon can also be clicked when you want to view any friend recommendations or search for friends on Facebook.

Messages - This section allows you to send and receive private messages between one or more people you’re friends with.

Notifications - Any time a friend or Facebook application creates a new post you’ll be notified in this section. Clicking this icon will show all recent notifications. If you wish to change what is capable of sending you notifications including any Facebook applications or games click the See All Notifications link at the bottom and check or uncheck what you want to be notified on.

Search - Finally, the search box in Facebook can be a powerful tool that can be used to quickly find any current friends or people on Facebook. In addition searching for terms such as a company name, product, sports team, music band, etc. will find fan pages and groups that can be joined.

Modify your account notifications

Keep your e-mail and your cell phone clean by updating or eliminate Facebook notifications or keep more up-to-date by adding new notifications. Facebook notifications can be added and removed by clicking Account link in the top right corner, thenAccount Settings, and then clicking the Notifications tab.

Top News and Most Recent

By default Facebook will display your wall postings in the News format, which means it only displays posts it believes are most relevant to you. These results are based on your past interaction with your friends. If you want to see every post made by all your friends that are not hidden click the Most recent link in the upper right section of your news feed as shown in the above picture example.

If you want to adjust who shows up manually click the Edit Options in the bottom right corner of your news feed.

View High School work friends

If you’ve added your High School or previous Work locations to your profile, quickly see all classmates and co-workers on Facebook by clicking the link in your Info tab under your profile.

Quickly change profile picture

Your profile picture can be quickly changed to any other picture by visiting your profile, hovering the mouse over your current profile picture, and clicking the Change Picture link that appears in the top right corner of the picture.

Don’t post private information on friend’s walls on in comments

When you make a post on a friend’s wall or in any of their comments realize that any of their friends are going to be able to see that post. If you wish for something to remain only between you and a friend send them a Facebook message instead.

Suggestions and random friend invites

As you get more friends on Facebook it will begin making friend, groups, and fan suggestions. These are suggestions made by Facebook and not your friends. Unless these are something you’re interested in they can be ignored.

This same rule can be applied to people who may want to be your friend that you don’t know. If you don’t know someone don’t accept his or her friend invite. Once someone becomes your friend they’ll have access to any information your friends are capable of seeing.

Tag your Facebook friends in your photos

Always make sure to tag any of your Facebook friends that are in pictures you upload. However, never tag someone who is not in the picture. When someone is tagged in a photo that picture is automatically added to that persons profile and is a great way to share pictures with all friends.

Man Pranks Facebook Users By Recreating Their Profile Pictures

After searching Facebook for people with the same name as him, Reddit user CasinoRoy decided to prank them by recreating their profile pictures.

He recreates the pictures by mimicking their exact poses and clothes, after which he sends them a friend requests to “creep them out”.

According to him, most of their responses were “what the hell” or “who the hell are you”, and they immediately changed their profile pictures.

Who Is an Average Facebook User?

What does it mean to be average on Facebook? On a given day, 26% of users “Like” a friend’s status, 22% comment on a friend’s status and 15% update their own status.

This infographic, created by JESS3, examines engagement statistics with the world’s most popular social network.

The average user has 229 friends, of which 22% are from high school, 12% are co-workers, 9% are from college and 3% they only met once. In 2008, the average user was 33. Two years later, the average user was 38, five years older.

Compared with other social networks, Facebook users are the most engaged. Fifty-two percent visit Facebook daily, beating out others for daily visitors, such as Twitter (36%), Myspace (7%) and LinkedIn (6%).

Facebook uses offline purchases to target ads

Facebook is allowing advertisers to target individual users based on offline purchases.

If you head to a department store to buy a pair of jeans, you might start seeing a lot of ads for pants on Facebook.

For the first time, Facebook ads will target specific users based on their past buying history — even if the purchases happened offline. Facebook unveiled the new feature for advertisers, called “Partner Categories,” on Wednesday.

The feature works with information from massive consumer data companies Acxiom (ACXM), DataLogix and Epsilon. These are companies that knowyour online activity and what you’ve bought recently.

Facebook (FB) Partner Categories matches the social network’s user-generated data with the information from the data companies to create dossiers on its users. Facebook then groups those specific users into categories like “people who are heavy buyers of frozen foods,” and advertisers can serve ads to those curated groups.

Previously, advertisers could target only general groups based on user-supplied information: for example, women in California who list surfing as an interest.

In a blog post about the new product, Facebook was quick to note that the data are anonymized on both sides. That is, while advertisers can target groups of specific users, they never know the identities of the users they’re advertising to.

Partner Categories advertisers see only the size of the group, and details about why these users were grouped — for example, they’re customers with a grocery store loyalty card who buy three times as much cereal as the national average.

The pairing of these data sources is sure to incense critics of the company’s data practices, though Facebook also noted in its post that “companies have long used this type of targeting off of Facebook.”

“We think that this new type of targeting is both more relevant for people and can be even more effective for advertisers,” said Elisabeth Diana, spokeswoman for Facebook. “We think we can serve both in a privacy-safe way.”

At launch, advertisers can choose from 500 of these “partner categories,” and further refine by data like gender or age. Facebook said users will be able to see how and why they were targeted for a certain ad, and they have the ability to opt out of ads from certain advertisers or from partner categories altogether.

By adding this type of highly targeted advertising capability, Facebook clearly wants to create more value for advertisers — which could result in more revenue for Facebook.

The social network has over a billion users, but in 2012, the company’s average revenue per user was just $5.32. That’s only a 6% increase from 2011, and it’s far lower than other companies that report the metric.

Still, advertising remains Facebook’s bread and butter. Ads accounted for 84% of Facebook’s revenue in 2012, and the company has continued to release site updates that toe the line between calling attention to ads and not annoying users. For example, last month’s News Feed revamp centered around a more visual design that also includes bigger graphics for ads in users’ news feeds.

Zuckerberg kicks off tech lobbying push on immigration

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg is among the tech leaders joining to form a public interest group.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and a number of other leading technology CEOs are forming a public interest group to push for immigration and lobbying reform.

The group, named FWD.us, and pronounced as Forward US, is pushing for a significant increase in legal immigration and a path to citizenship, especially for those educated here or who came to the country as children.

It also wants to see education reform, including higher standards in schools, financial support for good teachers, a greater focus on science and math instruction, and greater investment in scientific research.

Zuckerberg announced the new group in an Op-Ed column in the Washington Post Thursday.

“In a knowledge economy, the most important resources are the talented people we educate and attract to our country. A knowledge economy can scale further, create better jobs and provide a higher quality of living for everyone in our nation,” he wrote in the column.

Among the issues he raised in the piece are that the annual supply of H1-B visas used by highly skilled foreign workers runs out within days of them being made available, even though he says that each of those jobs will create two or three more U.S. jobs.

Other founders of the group include Reid Hoffman, co-founder and chairman of LinkedIn(LNKD), and John Doerr, general partner at tech venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins. Joe Green, who is co-founder of the community and political organizing software NationBuilder, is the president of FWD.us.

Other tech executives supporting the effort include Eric Schmidt, executive chairman ofGoogle (GOOG, Fortune 500); Marissa Mayer, CEO of Yahoo (YHOO, Fortune 500); Reed Hastings, founder and CEO of Netflix (NFLX); Mark Pincus, founder and CEO ofZynga (ZNGA); and Elon Musk, CEO of both Space X and Tesla Motors (TSLA).

The group has hired a bipartisan staff of experienced political operatives. They include Rob Jesmer, the former head of National Republican Senatorial Committee, who will serve as campaign manager for the group, and Alida Garcia, who was National Latino Vote Deputy Director for President Obama’s re-election campaign and will serve as coalitions and policy director.

The group is a 501(c)(3) organization, which means unlike a political action committee it will not need to disclose its contributors, even though it can engage in lobbying and support political candidates.

Under mounting pressure from activists and advertisers, Facebook is ramping up efforts to stamp out hate speech, particularly depictions of violence against women.

The move, announced Tuesday, came after a weeklong campaign by women’s groups targeting pages that celebrated or made light of rape, domestic violence and sexual degradation of women.

“In recent days, it has become clear that our systems to identify and remove hate speech have failed to work as effectively as we would like, particularly around issues of gender-based hate,” Marne Levine, a Facebook vice president in charge of public policy, wrote in a post on the site.

“In some cases, content is not being removed as quickly as we want. In other cases, content that should be removed has not been or has been evaluated using outdated criteria. We have been working over the past several months to improve our systems to respond to reports of violations, but the guidelines used by these systems have failed to capture all the content that violates our standards. We need to do better — and we will.”

A coalition of women’s groups, under the banner Women, Action & the Media, celebrated the announcement, saying that Facebook has asked them to be part of an ongoing conversation about improvements to the social network.

Pages flagged as offensive by the group had such names as “Kicking Your Girlfriend in the Fanny Because She Won’t Make You a Sandwich,” “Violently Raping Your Friend Just for Laughs,” “Raping Your Girlfriend” and “Fly Kicking Sluts in the Uterus.” Searching for those pages Wednesday delivered no results.

“It is because Facebook has committed to having policies to address these issues that we felt it was necessary to take these actions and press for that commitment to fully recognize how the real world safety gap experienced by women globally is dynamically related to our online lives,” author Soraya Chemaly, who helped spearhead the effort, said in a post on the group’s site.

In Levine’s post, Facebook promised to:

– Update guidelines that its Community Standards team uses to identify hate speech, with help from legal experts and women’s groups

– Update training for team members who police hate speech

– Increase accountability for Facebook users whose pages don’t legally qualify as hate speech but who post content that is “cruel or insensitive”

– Implement a policy that requires users who create pages with questionable content to publicly attach their personal account to them

– Encourage groups already working on cyber-hate issues to include the women’s coalition.

“These are complicated challenges and raise complex issues,” Levine wrote. “Our recent experience reminds us that we can’t answer them alone.”

Tasked with policing a site with roughly 1 billion users, Facebook says it has sought to strike a balance between cracking down on hateful content while still allowing for freedom of expression.

“We seek to provide a platform where people can share and surface content, messages and ideas freely, while still respecting the rights of others,” Levine said. “To facilitate this goal, we also work hard to make our platform a safe and respectful place for sharing and connection. This requires us to make difficult decisions and balance concerns about free expression and community respect.”

Such issues have come up repeatedly in the past, notably when Facebook users created fan pages celebrating accused Colorado theater shooter James Holmes or Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

The recent campaign by women’s groups was launched last Tuesday with an open letter to Facebook complaining about pages deemed offensive. The letter complained of a double standard toward imagery on the site in light of past controversies over Facebook removing more innocuous content, such as photos of women breastfeeding.

“These pages and images are approved by your moderators, while you regularly remove content such as pictures of women breastfeeding, women post-mastectomy and artistic representations of women’s bodies,” read the letter, signed by dozens of women’s groups from around the world. “It appears that Facebook considers violence against women to be less offensive than nonviolent images of women’s bodies.

“In a world in which hundreds of thousands of women are assaulted daily and where intimate partner violence remains one of the leading causes of death for women around the world, it is not possible to sit on the fence. We call on Facebook to make the only responsible decision and take swift, clear action on this issue, to bring your policy on rape and domestic violence into line with your own moderation goals and guidelines.”

On Twitter, supporters posted violent images they said were originally shared on Facebook pages. They included a picture of a woman at the bottom of a stairwell with the caption, “Next time, don’t get pregnant” and multiple postings of a dramatized photo of a man threatening a frightened woman with captions like “Dishes: Do them now” and “Women deserve equal rights … and lefts.”

The letter also encouraged people to contact Facebook advertisers. According to the group, supporters sent more than 5,000 e-mails to advertisers, in addition to posting messages to advertisers on Twitter and Facebook itself.

The group claims that 15 companies said they were pulling their ads from Facebook as a result of the efforts. Nissan UK and Nationwide were among those who announced they were doing so while others, like Dove soap, said they were working with Facebook on a solution.

“We fully support that today @womenactmedia & @Facebook reached a joint position on rights,” Nissan UK posted on its Twitter feed late Tuesday.

User responses on Facebook’s post were mixed. While many of the roughly 300 comments Wednesday morning thanked the site, others suggested it wasn’t enough or speculated that it wouldn’t have happened without pressure from advertisers.

There was also pushback from users who called it a threat to free speech.

“Oh look,” said user Mathew Bates. “The hurt feelings police is attempting to undermine the First Amendment again.”

Many, however, seemed optimistic — but cautious.

“It’s a start but I’ll believe it when I see it in the long term,” wrote user Melissa Perault. “We need to make sure FB follows up on this.”

Facebook’s community standards page says, “Facebook does not permit hate speech, but distinguishes between serious and humorous speech. While we encourage you to challenge ideas, institutions, events, and practices, we do not permit individuals or groups to attack others based on their race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sex, gender, sexual orientation, disability or medical condition.”
