Confession: I have a retail therapy problem. I love to shop. I love to buy clothes and shoes. I buy for everyone in our house and our closets are jam-packed. But what happens when the kids start to outgrow their clothes, shoes and toys? Due to their Mama’s problem, most of these clothes are barely worn and could be used by other kiddos. So over the last few years I have consigned my baby equipment, toys, clothes and shoes. The only problem is that I am a working mom now and don’t really have time to enter everything in, plus hang and tag my items. Did I mention that my kids have a lot?! Well…Almost New Kids Consignment to the rescue!

I happened to find out about this sale through word of mouth from a good friend and was interested in how this sale was different from the others here in town.  And I know what it’s like to be a work-at-home mom trying to start/run a business, so I love to support when I possibly can. I soon  had an opportunity to meet the two owners of this up and coming sale and find out the details of their sale.

Adriana and Julie are the owners of Almost New Kids Consignment sale and boy, have they made me a very happy Mama. Now THAT is my kind of SERVICE!

I pre-warned Adriana and Julie that I had a lot of items, but I don’t think they really realized just how much stuff I really had. Believe it or not, I had 2 FULL tubs of shoes, including many pairs of Pedipeds and Nikes!

Both ladies filled up both of their trucks with all of my items!

I have never been so happy in my life to see a truck packed with all my stuff driving off into the distance. Thank you Almost New Kids Consignment!

It’s SUMMERTIME!!! And you know what that means, right? Hot summer nights, swimming in the pool, flip-flops, and grillin’ out on the grill! Here at Casa Lovin’ Our Chaos, we love to barbecue on our grill and especially when we can invite friends over to enjoy our scrumptious fare. But as much as I love to entertain, I prefer to do things the simple, fast, and easy way! Enter my favorite store, Fresh & Easy! I have talked about my love affair with Fresh & Easy before in previous posts, but here are a few quick reasons why I love this local store.

1. I LOVE all of the fresh, pre-made foods that they offer for on-the-go convenience. Chandler and I regularly run in and grab their delicious California Rolls.
2. I LOVE their daily clearance section and regular sale items. If you haven’t shopped this clearance, you HAVE to check it out the next time you go, as the deals are incredible!
3. Fresh & Easy ALWAYS has coupons, plus they have a great Friends Rewards system. I mean $10 off of $50 or $5 off of $20, those are amazing deals!
4. Fresh & Easy REALLY does make it easy to shop! Parking is very convenient, plus they have special parking for families with children (bonus points!) and the layout of the store is easy to navigate along with quick and speedy self-checkouts.

So of course, we decided last minute to have a Memorial Day barbecue on Sunday night. About an hour before our invited guests were to arrive, I headed over to Fresh & Easy and grabbed our groceries for our meal.

I bought tri-tip, ribs, Fresh & Easy’s 1/4 lb hamburgers and then got the wheat buns for free (fabulous weekend deal), corn on the cob, macaroni salad, red potato salad, stuffed Portobello mushrooms, stuffed jalapeno peppers, fresh fruit tray, cherry pie (clearance $2.00!), ice cream, strawberry pound cake dessert (on clearance for $2.00!), paper plates, chips, more fresh fruit and of course soda pop! And then of course, I used my fabulous coupon of $10 off $50!!

As soon as I got home, Jeremy started grilling the tri-tip and burgers. The ribs were already pre-cooked, so they just had to be warmed up on the grill.

While Mr.Chaos was grillin’, I quickly set up all of the other food for our guests soon arrival. The only thing that I ended up making was the Mozzarella Caprese, but it is super quick and easy to make.

Our friends and family soon showed up and we dug right in, savoring every tasty morsel! Scrumptious tri-tip and ribs. A MUST at every cook out!

Actually, I should say that my friend Leah believed that I could…because honestly, running sounds a lot easier than it truly is and I didn’t know if I was going to be able to run the whole 5k. It all started a few years back when both Leah and I and our husbands would sit around and talk about our ‘bucket lists’. One thing on my bucket list was to run a 5k and when I say run, I mean RUN the whole thing. I was initially inspired by a girl named Katie and her blog, Runs for Cookies. I started reading about how she started running and became extremely motivated to try running for myself. Before believing that I too could actually run, this was my motto…

Leah and I started doing the Couch25k training program and registered for the Las Vegas Color Run, which was going to be held on May 25th. The Color Run is a fun run and they don’t time you, so we figured this would be a great first race to try. We tried to run at least 3 days a week using the c25k app at a local trails park. We are both working moms and have crazy schedules, so it didn’t always pan out, but we did our best to make it work. We started the program back in the middle of March and ended up running almost an entire 5k, a few days before our run. Yet I still wasn’t convinced that I was going to be able to RUN the entire race.

We thought that we were going to be so original with our tutus and crowns, but boy what a surprise we had when we showed up and saw a sea of tutus, glitter and costumes! Oh, forgot to mention our team name was Glitter and Glam…LOL!

We started the race around 9:15ish, as we were in the 4th wave or runners released. I was quite surprised at how many runners of all abilities, shapes and sizes were there, running, walking, and having a great time. The race route went around and through Sam Boyd Stadium and included gravel, wet grass, fake grass and parking lot asphalt. The hardest parts were the uneven parts of the gravel areas and the wet/squishy grass.

I am positive Leah could have run the race in less than 25 minutes, but she was there cheering me on and never left me in the dust! Thanks friend…. <3

I am not going to lie. Running is hard and especially when you run with extra weight. There were several times I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to make it without walking or skipping (because you know skipping counts, right?!).

We finally crossed the finish line. My tutu was falling apart, I was parched and tired, but we had COMPLETED our first 5k!! Leah did time us and her timer showed our winning time…32:37

Mission accomplished! My first 5k is finished and I am so happy that I ran the whole way!  I didn’t hit my goal of 30 minutes or less, but was really close and I am still going to try at my next race. Yes, I said next race.

The 2012/2013 is quickly winding down and our school has only 6 1/2 days left! So hard to believe that my little Kinders will be moving on, plus my own little Missy Prissy Kindergartner who is graduating as well!

So happy to take part in the Craft Lightning Week again, where I was challenged to create a project within 15 minutes. I love wreaths and like to create my own, so I can add my own ‘spin’ on them. (Remember my White Feather Wreath?) I found this burlap/chevron ribbon at the craft store and knew that it would be perfect for a wreath. This wreath was so simple to make and really only took 15 minutes to make, even with the quick additions that I made to it. Enjoy!

Supplies:

Wreath form (There are many different kinds to use. I found this one at Wal-Mart on clearance for .50!)

Ribbon

Straight Pins (TIP: I keep all of my straight pins that I bend on accident and keep them for projects like this)

Embellishments (I ended up using fabric yo-yos, that I had already previously made and were in my ‘craft stash’)

Step 1: Pin the start of  the ribbon onto the wreath form and start wrapping.

Step 2: I was able to wrap the entire wreath, with the exception of one little patch. This is when I decided to improvise and make a slight adjustment.

Step 3: I added matching grosgrain ribbon around the bald patch and created a bow and ribbon hanger. I then grabbed a few rosette yoyos that I had in my craft stash and voila…a new Summer Wreath in 15 minutes!

Now that we got that out of the way, I want to share a little something. The honest truth is that I struggle with my weight. I am pretty much a yo-yo and go up and down and back up. I wish I wasn’t this way, but I have yet to conquer my food issue demons. I am always working at losing weight and staying fit, but the truth is that I often get frustrated when I don’t see results quickly. I know that I didn’t put the weight on overnight and I am not going to lose it overnight, but I need to see results to keep me motivated in the right direction.

I started this year out with a goal to lose the 30+ lbs I have gained and can happily say that I am making progress. I started training to run my first 5k, back in March and was able to run for 20 minutes tonight, which is a HUGE success for me! I recently found a new love…coconut oil. Yes, I am a little late to the game, considering that I have seen coconut oil recipes ALL over the internet, including the million and one ways that coconut oil can be used. So, I finally decided to see what all the fuss was about. Long story short…we bought some, we LOVE it and now I am using it for EVERYTHING, including this natural sugar scrub.

This scrub is so easy to make and makes your skin feel so soft, that I knew I wanted to share it with all of my family, friends, followers and readers!  Here it goes… I hope you try it!

1 cup sugar

1/2 cup coconut oil

Happy May ya’ll! I am so happy and proud to say that this month marks the 1 year anniversary of Lovin’ Our Chaos and my move from blogger to wordpress. It is amazing what can happen in a year’s time. Growing this blog and gaining a loyal readership {besides my own family } has been a challenge, yet so very exciting. I have learned so much about not only the basics of blogging, but about the more ‘technical’ aspects like SEO, plugins, keywords and how to read google analytics.

{Kids DIY Wind Chime}

Confession. I ruined one of my black skirts the first time I used Mod Podge. I just assumed that it would wash right out. Wrong.  So, you can imagine my delight when Plaid Crafts sent me a box of goodies that included their new Mod Podge Wash Out. Finally a Mod Podge that is designed for kids to use, as well as moms, who craft like kids. That would mean me…

Mod Podge Washout is great for moms and teachers, since it washes out of clothing and furniture with soap and water, even when dry! No pre-soak required. Plaid also sent me a few bottles of their Apple Barrel paint, along with some spouncers (foam applicators) and stencils. I have been using for years and love that they are so versatile and come in a wide range of colors. They are easy for kids to use and clean up quickly with just soap and water. Happy, happy, joy, joy!

After wracking my brain trying to think of a project that my kids and I could make together, I decided to let my kiddos try their hand at making a fun wind chime. Bottom line…my kids had a great time crafting with mom and our house has two new wind chimes to sing in our desert winds!

{DIY} Easy Kids Wind Chime

Materials Used

Plaid Apple Barrel Paints in 5 different Spring colors

Mod Podge Wash Out

Spouncers or sponge applicators

Terra Cot Pot

Cord (We used stretchable jewelry cord)

Pony Beads

Bells

Large Buttons

Ribbon

Hot Glue/Glue Sticks

Step 1: Using the provided spouncers, my kiddos painted their pots with their choice of paints. The paint dries fairly quick, so this is a project that can be completed within an hour or so.

Step 2: Choose ribbon pieces and mod podge them onto the pot with the Mod Podge Washout.

I allowed my kids to paint on their Mod Podge and I wasn’t even the teeniest bit worried about their clothes!

This is Chandler’s pot, but you know, he is almost 12 and really doesn’t want to show his face, while crafting…so you will just have to take my word on it!

Step 3: Next, we took a long piece of stretchable jewelry cord and folded it in half. We turned the pot over and placed a large button over the hole. I helped the kids thread the cord through the hole and then through the four button holes. The kids then laced on pony beads and bells. After they were satisfied, I hot glued the button onto the pot, to secure in place.

Step 4: We then used heavier gauge wire to go through the button holes. The wire will be what keeps the wind chime hanging. The kids decided to lace the wire with beads as well, just to look good!

And finally…Moriahs’ finished wind chime…

And last but not least, Chandler’s wind chime…complete.

It has been birthday party central around these parts. I turned thirty-something in March and then a few short days later, a dynamic young lady turned 6 years old at our house. Gone are the days of me planning adorably girly themed parties. Missy Prissy INSISTED on a ‘dolphin’ birthday, whatever that is. Soon I will be sharing how to pull off an adorable party on a dollar store budget!

And then just yesterday we celebrated Mr.Chaos’s 34th birthday and in a few weeks, Chandler will be turning 12. Whew. That is a lot of cake and ‘special’ birthday dinners.

Our friends Henry and Ashley got married and Mr.Chaos was the best man.

Apparently our kids “LOVE” weddings!

There is only 36 more days of school and this MamaTeacher has been busy taking classes to re-new my teaching license. I can’t believe that this school year is almost over!

Along with taking classes, I have been working on re-modeling a ‘room’ in our house and here is a little sneak peek. Can you guess what room I am re-doing and what exactly I am doing with the frame and fabric?

It’s no secret around these parts that I am addicted to sweets. I love me some sugar! Yet, there is one treat that had me at hello when I came across it a few years back…Cake Pops. Affectionately referred to at our house, as Cake Balls. Over the last few years these Cake Balls have shown up at just about every function that we attend and they have been so popular, that I have even taken requests for certain flavors for the next event. The most popular flavors have been Red Velvet and Carrot Cake, although I have made chocolate, dark chocolate fudge, funfetti, and strawberry. Cake Pops have become a huge trend and I know that there are hundreds of different recipes and tips out there, but today, I am sharing my recipe and tips. Bon Appetite!

4 Simple Steps are as followed.

1. Bake Cake 

2. Dump cake into bowl & add frosting; Mix

3. Roll into balls and freeze for 30 minutes

4. Remove and dip into Almond Bark or Candy melts and allow to dry

Ingredients Needed for Cake Balls

Boxed Cake (Any type or brand you want)

1 container frosting

1 block of Almond Bark or 1-2 bags of Candy Melts

Optional:

Lollipop Sticks

Toppings for decorations

Ingredients for Red Velvet Cake Balls

1 Box Red Velvet Cake mix

1 Container Cream Cheese Frosting

1 block of Almond Bark

Directions

1. Mix cake ingredients according to directions (although, I use real butter in place of oil)

2. Bake cake exactly as directions instruct (DO NOT overcook or your cake balls will have hard pieces in them)

3. As soon as you take cake out of oven, dump into a bowl.

4. Immediately stir in frosting. The frosting will melt into the piping hot cake.

5. Cover with plastic wrap and chill in refrigerator for a few hours or overnight, which is my preferred method.

6. Remove mix from refrigerator and use a scoop to make measured ‘balls’. I then roll them by hand to firm them up. Place on plate/tray and put in freezer for 20-30 minutes.

7. While I am waiting for my cake balls to cool and set as ‘balls’, I follow the directions to melt the Almond Bark/candy melts. I use my Pampered Chef Micro-Cooker and use the microwave. I then remove the balls from the freezer and hand dip them in the Almond Bark/candy melt, using a spoon for help. I then place each dipped Cake Ball onto a wax paper lined tray or cooling rack to dry. These dry fairly quickly, so they can usually be served within  15-20 minutes of dipping them.
