The Gulf Coast
The gulf coast region is 100-mile strip of land that curves around the Gulf of Mexico. This area is full of beaches and prairie farms. Hillary Clinton and John McCain are offering overburdened motorists a federal “gasoline tax holiday.” But economists say that the proposal is unlikely to actually lower the price of gasoline. McCain’s plan would essentially give federal funds to oil refineries, while the net effect of Clinton’s plan probably wouldn’t be much at all, although it would create a lot of new administrative work

President Bush took another tack, suggesting a couple of golden oldies that he said would help halt the escalation in motorists’ costs: allowing companies to drill for oil in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and encouraging construction of more refineries.

But opening up ANWR would lead to a negligible bump in world oil supply, and would provide barely five percent of what the U.S. consumes today. The spigot wouldn’t even be fully opened until the mid 2020’s — if Congress acts now, which isn’t at all likely. And Bush fails to acknowledge that investors aren’t interested in building refineries for strong business reasons.

Congress has tried several times in Bush’s two terms to pass legislation to finally open the refuge to energy exploration, but always fell a few votes short due in part to concern over what drilling would do to ANWR’s wildlife.

All three leading presidential candidates, Democrats Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton and Republican John McCain, are against oil drilling in the refuge.

President Bush is trying to break our oil addiction with tougher new fuel economy rules that his transportation secretary, Mary Peters, announced this week on Earth Day. By 2015 every auto company’s passenger cars sold in America have to average 35.7 mpg, up from 27.5 mpg today, while minivans, SUVs and pickup trucks must average 28.6 mpg, up from about 22 mpg today. That adds up to an overall average of 31.8 mpg for all new vehicles sold in America by 2015, a big step up from 25 mpg today

Bill said to cut the price of oil by better regulating the energy market, will assist people in their search for lowest gas prices

Discussions have taken place recently over a bill that seeks to better regulate the multi-billion dollar energy derivatives market. If approved by Congress, the bill could result in motorists feeling less pain at the pump, the airport and in their homes during winter months.

That report showed 2008 gasoline supplies are abundant relative to 2007, yet the price for gas has skyrocketed.
The bill’s primary sponsor, U.S. Rep. Bart Stupak, D-Michigan, previously said the bill, if approved, would reduce the price of crude oil by as much as $30 a barrel. He said estimates are that a gallon of gas drops 19 cents for every $10 decrease in the price of a barrel of oil.

It is reported that Oil companies made large profits last year, including $40 billion reported by Exxon Mobil. The five largest oil companies operating in the United States reported combined earnings of $36 billion in the first quarter of this year.

The bill, HR 594, is known as the Prevent Unfair Manipulation of Prices (PUMP) Act. It would require oil and gas companies to play by the same rules as other industries and would close the “Enron Loophole” that was included in the Commodity Futures Modernization Act of 2000. The loophole allowed energy commodities such as crude oil, gasoline, and natural gas to play by their own rules and be traded outside of the New York Mercantile Exchange without any oversight by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.

A hearing on the proposed legislation is scheduled in the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee for the House Energy and Commerce Committee on June 23.

In certain district in northeast and central Pennsylvania, gas is over $4 a gallon, and this is impacting all industries, from family farmers to trucking companies.

These industries are playing by their own rules resulting in the general public being forced to pay over $4 for a gallon of gas. Gas prices are soaring and there is no accountability from the market or from the government.

According to AAA, the average price in the Wilkes-Barre area Thursday for a gallon of gas is $3.95, though there are at least five stations in Luzerne County charging more than $4 for the lowest octane. The price of a barrel of sweet crude oil rose $5 Thursday to nearly $128. In the last year, crude oil prices have doubled, climbing 36 percent since Jan. 1 and about 15 percent since May 1 forcing people to search for the lowest gas prices in the area so avoid the most inflated prices

By regulating the industry, consumers could see cheaper gas and home heating fuel prices and airlines will pay less for jet fuel, allowing them to potentially lower ticket prices.

The legislation would also increase penalties for speculators found to be unfairly manipulating the oil futures market thus not creating the lowest gas prices. The bill would double the penalties for market manipulation, to up to $1 million or triple the monetary gain in penalties, or prison time of up to 10 years.

This bill is good news for the average punter who is just a pawn in the game of the oil industry. If this will lower gas prices then the American public will be happy.

The cheapest gas prices would appear to be in NW Atlanta and Marietta. On Tuesday June 10th the prices at Costco and Sam’s club were $3.84. The most expensive gas was in Atlanta Central. The price at Citgo was $4.39. Almost $0.55 higher than the lowest gas price in Atlanta

Despite daily headlines bemoaning record gas prices, the U.S. is actually one of the cheaper places to fill up in the world.

Out of 155 countries surveyed, U.S. gas prices were the 45th cheapest, according to a recent study from AIRINC, a research firm that tracks cost of living data.

The difference is staggering. As of late March, U.S. gas prices averaged $3.45 a gallon. That compares to over $8 a gallon across much of Europe.

The U.S. has always fought to keep gas prices low, and the current debate among presidential candidates on how to keep them that way has been fierce.

But those cheap gas prices - which Americans have gotten used to - mean they feel price spikes like the ones we’re experiencing now more acutely than citizens from other nations which have had historically more expensive fuel.

Cheap gas prices have also lulled Americans into a cycle of buying bigger cars and bigger houses further away from their work - leaving them more exposed to rising prices, some experts say.

Price comparisons are not all created equal. Comparing gas prices across nations is always difficult. For starters, the AIRINC numbers don’t take into account different salaries in different countries, or the different exchange rates. The dollar has lost considerable ground to the euro recently. Because oil is priced in dollars, rising oil prices aren’t as hard on people paying with currencies which are stronger than the dollar, as they can essentially buy more oil with their money as the dollar falls in value.

And then there’s the varying distances people drive, the public transportation options available, and the different services people get in exchange for high gas prices. For example, Europe’s stronger social safety net, including cheaper health care and higher education, is paid for partly through gas taxes.

Gas price: It’s all about government policy. Gasoline costs roughly the same to make no matter where in the world it’s produced, according to John Felmy, chief economist for the American Petroleum Institute. The difference in retail costs, he said, is that some governments subsidize gas while others tax it heavily.

In many oil producing nations gas is absurdly cheap. In Venezuela it’s 12 cents a gallon. In Saudi Arabia it’s 45.

The governments there forego the money from selling that oil on the open market - instead using the money to make their people happy and encourage their nations’ development.

Subsidies, many analysts say, are encouraging rampant demand in these countries, pushing up the price of oil worldwide.

In the U.S., the federal tax on gas is about 18 cents a gallon, pretty low by international standards.

But those relatively low gas taxes make it hard now for Americans to deal with gas prices that have risen from around $1 to over $3 a gallon in the last seven years.

“Everybody pays more, but the U.S. pays more in absolute terms,” said Lee Shipper, a visiting scholar at the University of California Berkeley’s Transportation Center. If you’re already paying $4 in taxes, said Schipper, then an extra $2 a gallon isn’t that big of a deal.

Revenues from Europe’s high gas taxes are used to fund a variety of things. One thing they have built is better public transportation, said Peter Tertzakian, chief energy economist at ARC Financial, a Calgary-based private equity firm.

They gave people an alternative to driving, something we don’t have in North America,” said Tertzakian.

Low fuel taxes and prices sprung out of a national love for mobility going back generations, said Robert Lang, director of the urban planning think tank Metropolitan Institute at Virginia Tech.

In fact, the U.S. could not have had the western expansion it did without the cheap mobility railroads and horse carriages afforded long before it became an auto-obsessed culture, said Lang.

“You couldn’t have Manifest Destiny unless you could move,” he said.

The automobile, and its promise of personal mobility, only deepened the nation’s love affair with travel.

“Nobody sang ‘She’ll have fun fun fun until her daddy takes the tokens away,’” said Lang. ‘It’s totally romanticized.”

Gas consumption Europe vs. U.S. There is some evidence Europe’s high gas taxes have capped its oil consumption.

Oil use in the United Kingdom has basically stayed flat from 1980 to now, while in France it’s dropped 17%, according to figures from the Energy Information Administration.

In the U.S., meanwhile, oil use is up 21% over the same period, although the country has added more people and seen its economy grow slightly faster.

Americans have taken advantage of cheap gas prices to do other things - like buy bigger cars and bigger houses further away from city centers, said Schipper.

On a per capita basis, Americans use three times more oil than Europeans, he said. That means Americans are more exposed to rising gas prices than their counterparts across the Atlantic.

“Five-thousand square feet in the suburbs, that’s much rarer in Europe,” said Schipper, referring to big homes. “We dug our hole.”

In a world where the cost of fuel is rising and there are not any more lowest gas prices and the environment becoming polluted, it seems that the use of hybrid cars paints a different picture of the future than the one we are heading. Hybrid cars mostly derive their energy from electricity and hence they lower the rate of fuel consumption and also they protect the environment from getting much polluted. Top industry executives recently got hauled before Congress, where legislators pressed them for an explanation for rising gasoline prices - and outsize executive pay at companies like Exxon, which earlier this year posted a $40 billion profit for 2007.

Exxon, the biggest U.S. oil company, ranks 14th in the world in terms of oil reserves. The record-high price of gasoline is putting a strain on American motorists - and spurring some to shift their habits. Here are their stories.

Fortunately for 9-1/2 month old Mikey, he has two grandmas that love him more than anything. Unfortunately one lives in suburban Atlanta and the other lives in Ames, Iowa.

While the benefits of Web sites like You Tube allow us to upload videos of Mikey as he continues to grow, it is hardly comparable to the real thing for his grandmothers. Mikey needs to see his grandparents, and mommy and daddy need a well deserved night out!

Think you pay a lot for gas? Perhaps you’d prefer to live in Venezuela.

Gasoline prices in the United States, which have recently hit record highs, are actually much lower than in many countries. Drivers in some European cities, like Amsterdam and Oslo, are paying nearly 3 times more than those in the U.S.

The main factor in price disparities between countries is government policy, according to AirInc, a company that tracks the cost of living in various places around the world. Many European nations tax gasoline heavily, with taxes making up as much as 75 percent of the cost of a gallon of gasoline, said a spokesperson for AirInc.

In a few Latin America and Middle-East nations, such as Venezuela and Saudi Arabia, oil is produced by a government-owned company and local gasoline prices are kept low as a benefit to the nation’s citizens, he said. All prices updated March, 2005.

More and more companies are taking steps to ease the burden of record-high gas prices. The most popular option: A compressed workweek of four ten-hour days.

The average U.S. worker commutes about 30 miles and, with gas at a record $3.97 per gallon, that can hit employees’ wallets pretty hard.

So some companies are making efforts to help out. In fact, according to a new survey by Chicago outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas, most companies are doing so. The firm polled human resources executives in companies large and small in a wide range of industries, and found that 57% said they’ve launched at least one program, and usually several, designed to beat the high cost of commuting.

The most often cited, at 23%, are policies allowing - or even encouraging - people to work a compressed workweek of four 10-hour days. In addition, about 20% organize employee carpools, 18% subsidize the cost of public transportation, and 14% let people telecommute from home at least one day a week.

Keeping employees close to home

Why this burst of generosity? Count it as enlightened self-interest. Despite the shaky job market it would appear that many employers still count the recruitment and retention of talentrd workers among their top priorities. So they offer these gas-saving perks partly to keep their best and brightest workers from looking for jobs closer to home.”

The survey shows that, while only a few companies so far report losing a valued employee because of high commuting costs, more than one-third (34%) say they’ve had coveted candidates turn down job offers because of long commutes.

Telecommuting, which cuts carbon-fuel use to zero, seems at first glance to be the most attractive option of all, especially when you consider that two independent researchers, Kate Lister and Tom Harnish, analyzed the American workforce and found that 40% of us have jobs that could be done remotely - yet only 4% actually work from home on a regular basis.

Most employers still hesitate to let people work at home which may be due to the uncertain economy: So the search for lowest gas prices must go on.

However if all the U.S. workers who could telecommute actually began to do so, Lister and Harnish estimate we would conserve 625 million barrels of oil annually, cut greenhouse gas pollution by 107 million tons of CO2, and save almost $43 billion at the pumps.

Some companies are getting the message and expanding their support for telecommuting, often in combination with other programs that give employees a choice as to how they prefer to save fuel. CH2M Hill, a privately held engineering and construction firm in Englewood, Colo., that is one of Fortune’s 100 Best Places to Work, recently expanded its IT capabilities to allow more people access to the systems and networks they need to reach while working from home. The company also makes it easy for employees to bike to work, offering amenities like showers and secure bike storage on-site.

Denver’s new state-of-the-art light-rail system is partly subsidized by CH2M and, to encourage people to use it, the company started a program that lets employees buy rail passes using pre-tax payroll deductions. The passes are unlimited “all you can ride” tickets that take people all over the Denver area, day or night, for less than $30 a month.

While you may need to find a job that allows you to telecommute or search for lowest gas prices, I have the best of both worlds. I work from home and earn enough money so that I don’t need to worry abut rising gas prices.

The lowest gas prices are currently around $3.81 in certain areas, with highest being in the region of $4.09

In their desperate search for short term relief, two presidential candidates, Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain and New York Democratic Sen. Hillary Clinton, have proposed a federal gas tax holiday this year to provide some savings for American consumers.

Of course if you’re like me it won’t matter to you about finding lowest gas prices. I can afford to pay the rising costs because I belong to Its Good Business.

In May 2008, gas prices in the United States passed $3.80 a gallon, shattering records. But this was nothing new to American consumers. The price of gas had been rising, and breaking records, for months, and there is no more Lowest Gas Prices.

Gasoline is the bloodline that keeps America moving, and tracking prices to find the lowest gas price can feel like a roller coaster ride. They’re down a little one month, up the next, and then they shoot up more than 50 percent in a year. Plus, they’re different depending on where you look. Other countries — and even other states and cities — can have very different gas prices from your local Gas-N-Go. To the average person, it probably seems as though there’s little rhyme or reason to how gas prices are determined. So what are the forces that impact the price of gas at the pump, and where does your gas money actually go?

Americans have an insatiable thirst for gasoline. Just look at the amount of traffic on roads and highways, and you’ll see that a severe gas shortage would practically cripple the United States. Americans drive nearly 3 trillion miles per year, according to the Motor and Equipment Manufacturer’s Association, which is the equivalent of about 820 trips from the Sun to Pluto and back.

The United States consumes about 20 million barrels of oil products per day according to the Department of Energy. Of that, almost half is used for motor gasoline. The rest is used for distillate fuel oil, jet fuel, residual fuel and other oils. Each barrel of oil contains 42 gallons (159 L), which yields 19 to 20 gallons (75 L) of gasoline. So, in the United States, something like 178 million gallons of gasoline is consumed every day.

Typically, the demand for gas spikes during the summer, when lots of people go on vacation. Holidays like Memorial Day and the Fourth of July create logjams of tourist traffic during the summer. This high demand usually translates into higher gasoline prices. Cleaner-burning summer-grade fuels, which are more expensive to produce, can increase the price as well, but prices don’t always go up in summer. For instance, while gas prices soared 31 cents in April and early May of 2001, reaching $1.71 per gallon (which seems inexpensive compared to today’s prices), prices actually declined during the 2001 summer.
In 2004, prices continued to rise past the end of the summer travel season for a variety of reasons, including several hurricanes and an increase in the price of crude oil. And in 2005, Hurricane Katrina (along with a sizable increase in crude oil prices) pushed prices to $3.07 per gallon on September 5. Prices settled down somewhat in November and December of 2005. But now the numbers are climbing again, with an average price for regular unleaded gas at $3.95 right now (June 03, 2008), that is an all-time high

Price increases generally occur when the world crude-oil market tightens and lowers inventories.

So as you can see gas prices are crucial to the American way of life and during this present climate of ever rising prices the American population will be doing what they can to find the lowest gas prices to keep the costs as low as possible.

Timing. Try to avoid heavy congested times for you commute. I know if you have a job, that is difficult to do. however there may be times when driving at a particular time of the day could be put off until a less congested time.

According to the board’s summer outlook released on Wednesday, the price per barrel of crude oil will average at about US$130 per barrel.

The report says supply and demand will continue to stay closely in sync with each other because of:

the annual increase in usage during summer months
international conflicts putting supplies at risk
weakness of the U.S. dollar, resulting in more investment money flowing into commodities such as oil.

With oil prices staying high, prices at the pump are sure to do the same, the group’s chairman said in a statement.

“Global oil prices continue to rise,” wrote Gaetan Caron. “What happens in world crude oil markets this summer will largely determine the price of gasoline in both Canada and the U.S.”

On Wednesday, oil was trading at about US$127 per barrel. Last Thursday, it hit a new record, trading above US$135 for part of the day. We will not have the lowest gas prices any more they say.

The National Energy Board is an independent government agency accountable to Parliament through the minister of natural resources. The board is responsible for regulating international and inter-provincial aspects of the oil, gas and electric utility industries.

According to the board, oil is not the only commodity with a strong future. Natural gas prices have doubled since last fall and are also expected to continue rising. The board predicts they will hover between US$11 and US$13 per million British thermal units this summer.

That could mean increased electricity costs for regions that rely on natural gas-fired electricity production such as Ontario and Alberta.

Despite the high cost of fuel, the agency believes there will be enough electricity available to meet Canada’s needs throughout the summer. The possible exception, says the report, could occur during heat waves, when air conditioners are consuming significantly more power than usual.

are going to hurt the economy by raising the cost of new cars

by thousands of dollars, limiting consumer choice and

reducing utility.

Federal mandates with respect to ethanol have created

havoc in the food market, driving up prices as much as 10

percent (in some cases certain foods are up over 30 percent)

and they are going higher, while creating a fuel that uses more energy

to make it than you get from it, and is very expensive, pushing energy

costs even higher. What the government is doing by driving

prices higher is akin to what the government did in causing

the economy to go into the Depression after Black Friday

in 1929, passing huge tariffs to keep domestic prices and

wages artificially high.

But international trade retaliated

with similar tariffs, so our balance of trade, which was positive,

went negative and our economy’s huge export market

dried up overnight helping cause a 1929 stock market correction

to become a Depression until World War II.

If the government would have stayed out of the marketplace

there may have only been a recession instead of the misery

that was created by government that lasted over a decade.

I digress.

There are two kinds of power requirements: stationary (electrical) and portable. With respect to stationary power the answer is simple, nuclear.

It is the safest and cheapest form of electrical power ever developed and in the United States.

Has been used for decades without one fatality or injury

from nuclear contamination. Not one. Nuclear power is the safest and cheapest power available and we politically

restrict its use. And still no lowest gas prices . It has been 30 years since the last nuclear plant was built and we still get 20 percent of our power from domestic nuclear sources. Wind and solar account for .002 of our power needs and

are very expensive and unreliable. And we still don’t have the lowest gas prices.

By increasing our nuclear power by 100 percent, it would

lower pollution (smog and particulate components) and

improve safety. It would allow the conversion of coal to diesel

fuel at about $50 a barrel, further extending our liquid petroleum

supplies. Nuclear power is inexpensive whether it be the

latest in light water reactors or the new pebble bed system that is still in the proving stages.

Nuclear power can be produced for less than 3 cents a kWh instead of the 10 to 35 cents an hour that we pay for natural gas and/or coal fired

power plants, both of which pollute. When it comes to transportation,

the most plentiful, densest and safest fuel source is petroleum.

But we struggle with political turmoil and suffer the whims of two-bit dictators, continuing political unrest from exporting countries supplying

money to terrorist regimes and Arab potentates when we do

not have to.

But no one, not even the president, is willing to tell this country the truth about our domestic oil supplies in Alaska, offshore or in the Gulf

of Mexico, an amount totaling potentially 300 billion barrels,

enough to last this country about half a century without

ever taking another drop from anywhere else — and that’s not

counting on the tens of trillions of barrels of coal to diesel,

shale oil or even the tar sands of Canada, which would add

another couple of centuries of supply. Why do we or our

political leaders hate themselves and us so much? We could have the lowest

gas prices.

If there is political unrest in Nigeria, who cares. If the

Arabs want to trade some of their oil for our plentiful food

supply, we can talk. In other words, oil becomes less of a

weapon or a tool for dictators to set policy. Let them eat it

while we eat steak, broccoli and potatoes. We want the lowest

gas prices.

Why should we worry about energy when we have it right here in the United

States, and plenty of it. That is how we become energy independent,

increase the supply. It’s that simple.

For those who want to continue

to believe in the religion of global warming, continue your beliefs but don’t let that stop progress for the United States. Stop driving your car

and ride a bike, get off the electrical grid and do your part.

I am sure many of us learned after this last series of storms

how much fun life is without electricity. (And those hugely

expensive solar panels workgreat during a rain storm).

But for the rest of us, we like the way we live and the freedoms

that are attached to that way of life. If you don’t like what you

pay for your energy at your home or for your car, call your

president, congressman or senator and tell them that you want American oil in Alaska, offshore and in the Gulf of

Mexico and we need nuclear energy (let’s build the first oil

platform off Hyannis Port).

And with the oil royalties it could solve the Social Security Trust Fund problem.

One more point:

We pay more for gasoline than either the Germans, English or French.

Their cost per gallon is about $2.74 before taxes while

the American consumer pays an average of about $2.85.

So work towards changing things if you want the lowest gas prices like opening up new areas for drilling, or Get Over It! Yeah, it really is that simple.

Lowest Gas Prices are Gone and So What? Is someone holding a gun to your families head threatening to shoot if you don’t drive that Cadillac Escalade? No? Perhaps your pets have been kidnapped, never to return unless you drive that 8 cylinder Mustang GT. No again? Then you don’t have reason to whine. But much reason to learn about economies

Apparently, it’s a topic the major media outlets skipped in journalism school. Instead, they opted for electives like “Reality Shows 101.” This being since all we hear anymore is a few seconds of how terrible gas prices are these days. The remainder of the newscast is nothing but who got the boot from Dancing with the Stars or American Idol.
Go figure.

If you want Lowest Gas Prices here is some general info to put some things into perspective for those who “missed” how prices work. And hopefully, will effectively turn the “whiny factor” off for many of them.
Grocery Stores. Many people visit them and some, remarkably enough have noticed that prices have climbed a bit over the last couple years. Namely, in areas like bread, corn, rice, sugar as well as a few other staple foods. Much of this is directly attributed to the false sense of hope that “biofuels” will become the next best thing. Whilst all it really does is aide in the starvation factor being felt in much of the third world.

But are you aware of the fact that Grocery Stores operate on approximately a 30-35% profit margin? That amount varies of course by location, as well as the department (i.e., produce, meats/seafood, canned goods, etc.) within the store itself. It averages out to the low to mid thirty percent bracket generally. That’s a fairly hefty bit of a profit there. Are we demanding that Congress now hold “hearings” about the amount of money grocery stores have been making off the American public? No.

Now compare that, with the $11 Billion record profits that Big Oil companies made last year. Which by the way is the only other thing we get to hear on the news besides gas prices and Dancing Idols. Oh no! How dare Big Oil make a profit! That’s unheard of in a functioning Capitalist Economy. Hearings about this we have heard of. Several times now in fact.

Without the lowest gas prices it kind of makes me wonder why anyone would even bother starting, or continuing to run a business these days if all anyone is going to do is try to cause you to make NO money at it. But these are evil Big Oil companies we’re talking about. Companies that made “Record Profits.” Yeah, profits they EARNED, working on only a 10-11% profit margin! Yeah, that’s all they make. Especially when you consider all they have to SPEND in order to make that.

Oops, it sounds like the whiners didn’t take that into account before they started howling. Must have missed that part since they were probably busy ordering their half cafe-decaf-mocha-latte-triple shot-essprese-ccinos.

Something else for the “my panties are in a bunch over fuel costs” crowd might need to know is that other countries are WILLING to pay the higher prices for the oil. India and China come to mind as large populated countries with burgeoning middle classes. People who never owned a car, can now afford them, requiring a skyrocketing need for fuel in those countries. You can thank outsourcing for that. They pay it, so can you.

Let us not forget the enviro-tards that have been denying for decades the offshore shelves and ANWAR to the evil Big Oilists. The endangered Arctic Butt-Fly colonies and Luffa migrations apparently take precedence to National needs, which isn’t helping our situation any in reducing our dependence on foreign oil.
