World-class activity was recognised in many areas, leading to an increase of over 50% in our quality research funding. Based on that success, we have recently concluded a major review of research and knowledge transfer, which has allowed us to redefine our research as an all-inclusive set of activities comprising basic and applied research, policy-and practice-focused research, knowledge and technology transfer, entrepreneurship and consultancy. As we prepare for the future, our attention is focused on demonstrating the societal value of our research and the impact it makes on business, industry, government policies and the professions.

Our research and enterprise activities are more exciting and diverse than ever, with subjects ranging across business, social sciences, engineering and mathematics, informatics, law, music, journalism, cultural policy and a wide range of areas in the health-related domains.

We are now seeking to build on our success by offering 35 three-year, full-time doctoral university research studentships, available to both home and overseas fee-paying students. Applications can be made to undertake doctoral studies in any school of the University.

In addition, we would welcome applications from excellent candidates who are practising nurses and midwives who intend to use the degree to further their professional career. This follows the outstanding performance of our researchers in the Nursing and Midwifery areas in the 2008 RAE.

For entry in October 2010, the studentships will attract a bursary of £14,500 per annum in addition to payment of the tuition fees, plus an allowance of £1,000 across the studentship period for conference attendance, equipment etc. Successful candidates will usually be expected to undertake some teaching support activity in their second and third years, by agreement with the school concerned.

There are up to 10 scholarships available to prospective international students studying for a full-time taught Master’s programme . The scholarship provides a £5,000 fee waiver and is tenable for one year only.

ICDD is an interdisciplinary and international scientific network of excellence with the head office located at the University of Kassel, Germany and partner universities in Latin America, Africa and Asia. ICDD is funded under the programme “Excellence Centers for Exchange and Development” (exceed) launched by the German government through the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Under its Graduate School of Socio-Ecological Research for Development, ICDD invites applications for 20 PhD scholarship positions for studnets from DAC countries at the following internationally renowned universities:

Background
ICDD’s objective is to create and transfer knowledge on how to create and improve work and income opportunities in rural and urban regions of developing countries in light of globalization, climate change and urbanization. ICDD encompasses various disciplines such as agricultural science, political science, sociology, economics, and has a network of partner universities in Asia, Africa and Latin America. ICDD closely co-operates with International Labour Organisation and NGOs.

One of ICDD’s core structures for the inter-disciplinary generation of knowledge is the Graduate School of Socio-Ecological Research for Development. PhD projects within this school may be rooted in either the natural or social sciences and should be focused on actor and problem oriented research on sustainable human-environmental relationships and decent livelihoods. ICDD promotes three research clusters as a common framework for the design of prospective PhD projects:

* Countries eligible for Official Development Assistance of the OECD as approved by the Development Assistance Committee (DAC) in August 2009 (cf. list attached)
1) Sustainable Value Creation for Decent Work
This cluster focuses on strategies to increase value creation by developing technologies for more efficient and sustainable use of resources and by improving human skills, preferably along agricultural commodity chains. PhD applicants should be interested in analysing spatially and sectorally detailed urban-rural linkages to address the mobility of people, goods, services, money transfers, information, and associated flows of nutrients, energy and water.

2)Instruments for Promoting Decent Work
This cluster focuses on the effectiveness of existing instruments in enforcing minimum standards for labour as formulated by the International Labour Organization (ILO) such as public procurement, supply chain governance, and national minimum wages. PhD applicants should be interested in analysing such instruments and their effective implementation in different state contexts. A special focus should be directed towards their impact on or relevance for informal labour relations and particularly on the working conditions and lives of temporary labour migrants.

3) Strategies of Empowerment for Decent Work
This cluster focuses on the advocacy of good working conditions within economic and political decision-making processes against the background of eroding capacities of workers to engage in collective action due to the growing informal nature of work. Thereby special attention is directed towards particularly vulnerable groups, such as domestic workers. PhD applicants should be interested in exploring possible sources and forms of organisations to foster empowerment strategies within informal labour relations.

Scholarships
PhD students of the Graduate School will be based either at the University of Kassel or at one of ICDD’s international partner universities (see above), and will be enrolled in the respective university’s PhD training programmes. Please indicate in your application at which university you wish to be located. A joint international workshop programme on subjects of the ICDD, research methods, the linkage between theory and empirical research and for the presentation of the prospective PhD projects will take place every year within the Graduate School.
Scholarships will be awarded for four years under the precondition of a successful extension after one year. The scholarships will cover a country-specific monthly allowance according to DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) standards. All scholarships will include travel expenses for south-north and south-south mobility if necessary and funding for field research and the participation in Graduate School and ICDD activities.

Edinburgh Global Undergraduate Scholarships

Up to 10 undergraduate scholarships are offered to students for undergraduate study in any subject offered by the University. The scholarships will be worth £1,000 per year and will be tenable for the duration of the programme of study.

Eligibility
The scholarships are competitive and will be awarded to students who are accepted for admission on a full-time basis for undergraduate study at the University of Edinburgh. Applicants must be nationals of one of the following countries:

A University of Edinburgh Selection Committee will meet in early July 2010 to select the scholarship holders. The winners of the scholarship will be announced in mid July 2010.

The University of Tsukuba invites applications from international students for the 2010 University of Tsukuba “Tsukuba Scholarship” as per the guidelines outlined below. The University of Tsukuba’s “English Course Program”, which will commence in the 2010 academic year, is newly established program through which international students studying at the University of Tsukuba at the undergraduate level can earn their academic degrees by taking classes only in English.

1. Purpose
The purpose of this scholarship is to provide financial support for exceptional international students who are applying to enter the University of Tsukuba’s English Course Program at the undergraduate level, thereby contributing to the cultivation of people who can make future contributions to international society.

2. Application Qualifications and Conditions
Applicants for this scholarship must fulfill the following conditions:

Nationality: Applicants whose nationality is of a country other than Japan (limited to those countries with which Japan has diplomatic relations).
Applicants who fulfill the qualifications for entering the English Course Program in any of the following undergraduate schools:

4. Scholarship Amount Details
Travel expenses: The scholarship will pay a uniform amount of 100,000 yen for travel expenses to Japan from abroad when entering the University of Tsukuba. However, this travel expense payment is limited to those recipients who will be newly coming to Japan from abroad for the purposes of entering the University of Tsukuba.
Monthly stipend: Scholarship recipients will receive one of the following monthly stipends based on their results in the entrance examination etc.
Class 1:100,000 yen per month
Class 2: 60,000 yen per month
Enrollment fee and first-year tuition exemptions: In addition to the above noted travel expenses and monthly stipend, scholarship recipients will receive exemptions from paying their enrollment fee (a one-time only fee of 282,000 yen) and their first-year tuition (from August 2010 to March 2011, 357,200 yen), for a total of 639,200 yen.

8. Selection and Notice of Decision
Scholarship recipients will be selected based on a comprehensive assessment of their application documentation, the results of their interview (in cases where interviews are conducted for university admission), and the content of their scholarship applications. Results of the scholarship selection will be sent to all applicants for university admission together with the notice of their entrance examination results.
Please note: All information that applicants for the 2010 Tsukuba Scholarship submit on the “2010 Tsukuba Scholarship Application Form” will be held in strictest confidence and be used only for the selection of scholarship recipients.

9. Obligations of Scholarship Recipients
Scholarship recipients are expected to fully understand the educational purpose of the English Course Program that is conducted in their affiliated undergraduate school. Furthermore, it is expected that scholarship recipients consistently display leadership skills in educational activities undertaken with other students at the University of Tsukuba as well as any other activities.

10. Special Note
The scholarship will be revoked if any of the following situations occur:

If the scholarship recipient has falsified any part of the application documentation.
If the scholarship recipient take a leave of absence, withdraws or is expelled from his/her program of study because of disciplinary measures.
If the scholarship recipient has displayed behavior in his/her studies or lifestyle that is deemed unsuitable.
