JJ/WBGS Program

In 1987, the World Bank, with funding from the Government of Japan, established the World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (WBGSP) for graduate studies in subjects related to economic development. Each year, the Program awards scholarships to individuals from World Bank member countries to undertake graduate studies at renowned universities throughout member countries of the Bank.

Now in its 23d year, the Regular Program has awarded 3,153 scholarships, selected from 58,944 applicants. In addition, 1,226 scholarships have been awarded in the various JJ/WBGSP Partnership Programs for a total of 4,379 awards.
Since the inception of the Program, the Government of Japan has provided over 204,7 million dollars to the Scholarship Program. The Program’s objective is to help create an international community of highly trained professionals working in the field of economic and social development. The World Bank and the Government of Japan require the scholars to return to their home countries on completion of their study Programs and apply their enhanced knowledge and skills to contribute to the development process in their respective regions and communities.

Starting in 1992, a number of Partnership Programs have been launched, largely to respond to the need for graduate study Programs which combine academic rigor with specialized training in the practical aspects of policy-making. The objective of these Programs is to prepare the participants for effective policy-making roles in their home countries and regions.

The World Bank administers the Program through the World Bank Institute (WBI). Policy guidance for the Program is provided by a Steering Committee comprised of three Executive Directors and five senior managers of the Bank. A Secretariat for day-to-day administration is maintained within WBI.

Hermes Fellowships were designed to offer young and promising foreign researchers in the humanities and social sciences the chance to be visiting researchers in French universities and research centers. This program is open to researchers from: China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Peru, and South Africa.

The Hermes Program is financed by the French Ministries of Foreign Affairs and of Education and Research, the Department of Human and Social Sciences of the National Center of Scientific Research (CNRS), and the Fondation Maison des Sciences de l’Homme (FMSH).

Hermes fellowships are granted for 3 to 9 month periods. They were designed in order to give foreign researchers the opportunity to:

• carry out an individual research project within a hosting laboratory;
• become part of French and European scientific networks;
• set up lasting partnerships between their home institutions and the hosting institutions in France

The hosting laboratories in France – university research units or research institutions in Paris or elsewhere in the country – are chosen by the invited researchers. This decision is made in agreement with the fellowship selection committee and the scientific board of the FMSH. This joint process is intended to help candidates make the necessary contacts.

Scientific Fields Covered by the Hermes Program

All disciplines in the humanities and social sciences are eligible. However, priority is given to research projects addressing issues facing the contemporary world and those that have an interdisciplinary dimension.

A PhD student position is available in School of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE), Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore. The research will focus on the microbial ecophysiology and community dynamics in environmental bioprocesses. Self?motivated individuals who are interested in environmental microbiology and engineering are encouraged to apply. Candidates with a Master degree in relevant discipline and a strong background in experimental microbiology and/or bioprocess engineering will be considered favorably.

NTU is a major research intensive university in Singapore, and is highly recognized for its excellence in science and engineering. It is always highly ranked in many international comparisons of higher education.

A 4 year full research scholarship will be given through the School to the qualified candidate. The scholarship covers all tuition fees and stipend of S$2,000/month which is raised to S$2,500/month from year 2 after passing qualification exam. The monthly living cost on campus is about S$800-900. Special support for students to attend oversea conferences is also available.

Applicants with qualified academic record and good TOFEL and GRE scores will be considered immediately. International applicants must submit TOEFL and GRE scores (tested within 2 years) to the School before getting the final admission. Local applicants do not need the scores.

Language and Linguistic Evidence in the 1641 Depositions

In support of a major multidisciplinary Arts and Humanities Research
Council funded project Language and Linguistic Evidence in the 1641
Depositions, led by Dr. Barbara Fennell, we are seeking a Research
Assistant or Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Software
Development/Humanities Computing. You will work with the Principal
Investigator (PI) and a team of other linguists, computer specialists and
historians to further develop and analyze a digitized corpus of quasi-legal
statements from witnesses to the 1641 rebellion in Ireland. Consulting with
Humanities Computing experts in Dublin, the postholder will develop
facility with IBM LanguageWare?, and will work with the PI and Early Modern
English Research Fellow to develop the ontologies needed to manipulate the
digital corpus in order to be able to interrogate it about the nature of
the language represented within it (for interpretation by historical
linguists, dialect and text analysis specialists and cultural, political
and social historians). The postholder will then proceed to help develop an
interactive research site for use by linguists, historians and lay inquirers.

To be appointed as a Research Fellow you must hold a PhD in a relevant
computer science discipline, or to be appointed as a Research Assistant you
must hold a Master’s degree plus the appropriate level of experience that
demonstrates the required skills and capabilities. You should have
demonstrated expertise in java programming, databases, XML, and have a
strong understanding of modern web technologies. You will be disciplined,
but creative and innovative, and motivated by the creation of
transformative research technology. A flair for user interface design and
visualization techniques would be prove advantageous.

A Research Fellow will be appointed at the appropriate point of Grade 6-7
scale (£29,853 – £36,715 per annum), and a Research Assistant will be
appointed at the appropriate point of the Grade 5 scale (£25,001 – £28,139
per annum).
