Omatek is building a multi-billion naira factory powered by solar in Nigeria. The new solar-powered factory expected to take off immediately is the first of its kind in Africa and would be a major income revenue for the company providing 24-hour power to homes, offices, schools, hospitals and hotels. My take: Great move by Omatek, but I’d also like to see it produce low-cost solar-powered tablets for the African market. [via: TechLoy]

Can Italy’s Volunia Out-Google Google Search?

An Italian Professor named Massimo Marchiori has released a test version of a search engine that allows users to connect with others interested in the same subjects. According to Marchiori, Volunia, is “a new radical idea of what a search engine of the future could be.” An author of several web standards, he was first to introduce the concept of hyper-information in search engines, an idea later developed by companies such as Google. Facebook To Display Ads on Mobile Apps?

According to Financial Times, Facebook is reportedly working on displaying ads on its apps for Android, iPad and iPhone devices as early as March 2012. Huffington Post To Launch 24-Hour Online TV Channel

Arianna Huffington has announced The HuffPost Streaming Network, a 24/7 live-streaming TV network to launch this summer and feature 12 hours of original programming, five days a week. The network will spotlight the biggest, hottest, most engaging stories HuffPost is covering at any given moment and use them for conversations, commentary, and comedy. My take: This is what I expected from Nigeria’s NEXT instead of going print. It disrupted the online news industry, but could have changed the game further with a 24-hour Internet TV channel. Google Plus Vs Facebook Growth in Nigeria

Google’s social network, Plus has just over 75,000 users in Nigeria since its launch in June 2011, according to a recent report. But it seems that Google+ growth is very slow or stalled when compared to Facebook growth between June 2011 to December 2011. Facebook has added about 700,000 users, while Google+ only has an estimated 75,000 users in Nigeria since June 2011.

Has Google Kenya Country Manager Been Fired?

According to reports, Google has fired its Country Lead for Kenya, Olga Arara-Kimani, following investigations over allegations of data scraping and misrepresentation of Kenyan start-up, Mocality. Although, there’s no official Google statement yet, I think that an “appropriate action” would be to fire those responsible or involved with the Mocality data scrap saga. [via: TechLoy]
