To continue with the flight back to Stanley including a stopover at Pebble Island where we had gone earlier in the week. Probably the nicer flight thanks to the weather and the itinerary.

In Stanley the weather was better than the first time we flew in, even though it was very windy.

For the next group things seem more complicated, they arrived in Chile but it seems that those from the north of Italy, where the sanitary situation is more serious, risk being quarantined if they arrive in the Falklands.

[it]

Rough morning, I can say that the second sticker on the door of the airport was done, after take-off, overflying the runway and immediate landing, the right engine did not give all the expected power! Result: two hours of waiting for the rotation with the other plane....

At Sounders Island, the weather is very bad, so we eat the packed lunch at the lodge but when we leave for the excursion to the Neck, a sandy arm that connects two parts of the island, the situation is a bit better, except for the wind.

Not far away, a colony of albatrosses allows us to admire the "chicks" that are beginning to change their plumage and the aerial evolution of their parents who feed them.

The beach of Neck and its surroundings are occupied by numerous penguins, including a small colony of king penguins protected by a cord. But a few individuals are moving away and these three are circling less than a meter away from me. It is not clear who is the curious tourist and who is the attraction.

Back at the lodge, we discover that every afternoon, the plan of the next day's flights is broadcast on the local radio, and the names of the passengers on each flight are mentioned! In the past, the radio was the only means of fast communication. Today, the flight plan also arrives via the internet, but the "tradition" has remained.

And a new colony of Gentoo penguins, my approach skills improve: by choosing a suitable spot and remaining crouched for a few minutes, some particularly curious penguins even approach up to about a meter!

The lodge is well equipped with internet access cards, everyone rushes to buy one and tries to understand what the health situation is, the situation seems serious but less catastrophic than some third hand information had suggested.

In the afternoon a 4x4 excursion via the beach of Elephant Bay, which without the temperature would have nothing to envy the most famous beaches of the tropical islands.

We meet a new colony of cormorants before reacing one of the active Gentoo penguins.

[en] After a diversion to see the remains of an Israeli-made Argentinian plane under French licence, the 4x4 trip to White Rock along a runway, if it can be seen, takes about 2 hours...

On the spot, we discover a large colony of cormorants that we can observe very closely, the youngsters even come within a metre, perhaps taking us for a relative. The parents arriving from the open sea are teased by the "little one" to provoke the regurgitation of the fish which is eaten by pushing the beak and the head into the gullet of the parent who, once the operation is finished, runs away followed by his son.

Around and inside the colony there are also other birds (skua, vultures, ...) which "take advantage" of the cormorants. But also a small colony of rockhopper penguins.

In the meantime, the news from Europe and especially from the north of Italy are starting to worry us more and more, but we are not lucky enough to get much information because at the lodge there was only one card left for internet access (slow and expensive).

[it]

The first flight took us from Punta Arenas (Chile) to Mount Pleasant (Falklands), the military base built by the UK after the war with Argentina, which we flew over briefly...

At Mount Pleasant we left the Airbus A320 for two Britten-Norman BN-2 Islander twin-engined aircraft of about 8 seats each which took us to Port Howard.

After settling into the lodge, we visit the tiny museum about the war with Argentina. Among the exhibits I discover a Swiss-made mortar and a cartography manual, two objects that particularly touch me.

Port Howard is the main "village" on West Island, the second largest island in the Falklands. It has 20-25 inhabitants and 40,000 sheep, who can count on a debauchery that is open three times a week for one hour!
