Neu-Isenburg, Germany – The ground breaking ceremony of the future facility in Auckland on Friday, April 19, marked the beginning of a new era for LSG Sky Chefs’ long-standing operations in New Zealand, and the company’s strategicpartnership with the country’s national airline, Air New Zealand.
LSG Sky Chefs has been providing catering services to Air New Zealand since 1997 and is the airline’s preferred caterer globally. Presently, LSG Sky Chefs serve them at all of their domestic airports and in major hubs around the world, such as London, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Vancouver.
In 2012, LSG Sky Chefs agreed on a long-term Service Agreement and a Design, Build and Lease Agreement for the construction of the new facility, which will be equipped with state-of-the-art technology that will allow the company to apply lean and efficient processes for the benefit of both companies.
“Air New Zealand has a reputation as a leader in serving fresh, delicious, quality onboard cuisine that gets the seal of approval from our customers, who tell us that it adds to their overall enjoyment when flying with us. This is a glowing endorsement and a positive reflection of the hard work performed by LSG Sky Chefs and our Culinary Team,” commented Christopher Luxon, CEO of Air New Zealand.
“The new processes and technologies will enable us to deliver premium quality products to our valued customer and support them in differentiating and gaining a sustainable competitive edge,” said Walter Gehl, CEO of LSG Sky Chefs.

Neu-Isenburg, Germany – LSG Sky Chefs, the world’s largest provider of quality in-flight catering,...

Neu-Isenburg, Germany – LSG Sky Chefs, the world’s largest provider of quality in-flight catering, today unveiled “SPIRIANT,” a new brand for its worldwide in-flight equipment business area, at its booth at the World Travel Catering Expo (WTCE) in Hamburg.
The company’s equipment activities, namely the design, development and sourcing of in-flight equipment such as meal service and comfort items, galley equipment and commodities, have been marketed until now under the core LSG Sky Chefs brand. The decision to create a new dedicated and independent brand was made after considering market research findings as well as the size and potential of this business segment.
The name SPIRIANT, alongside the tagline “where inspiration meets performance,” represents the company’s can-do attitude and evokes associations with innovation, inspiration and confidence. Its logo, a combination of the soft commercial partnership symbol (&) and the more functional plus sign (+), demonstrates how the company will create value: by adding emotion to function, design to technology and inspiration to performance.
“The introduction of SPIRIANT clearly underlines our commitment to further invest in the equipment segment,” said Erdmann Rauer, LSG Sky Chefs’ Chief Sales Officer at today’s launch event. “With more than 20 years of experience in this business, we have the product know-how, qualified supplier base and buying power to leverage the vast market potential.”

Neu-Isenburg, Germany – In 2012, LSG Sky Chefs was able to increase its operating result for the fifth year in a row. Despite a number of unforeseen developments within the airline catering industry and the economy at large, consolidated group revenues rose by almost 9 percent to 2.5 billion Euros. The company’s operating profit amounted to 97 million Euros, which is an increase of 14.5 percent over the previous year’s figure.
"Our success is based on a solid foundation that has enabled our company to quickly respond to the ever-changing market requirements”, said CEO Walter Gehl. "Our measures include restructuring in the mature markets, the rigid execution of worldwide excellence initiatives in the company’s key areas and the proactive pursuit of growth opportunities in emerging countries."
In 2012, LSG Sky Chefs signed a number of strategic agreements in order to strengthen its global business objectives. The targeted expansion in Russia was successfully continued by entering the airline catering markets in St. Petersburg and Vladivostok within the framework of LSG Sky Chefs’ joint venture with Aeroflot, Aeromar. LSG Sky Chefs also signed a new joint venture agreement in Novosibirsk, Russia. In Luanda, Angola, a new joint venture facility began operations during the summer. In August, LSG Sky Chefs signed an agreement with Finnair for the management of its catering activities at the airline’s hub in Helsinki. Furthermore, the planned joint venture with Alpha in Great Britain was implemented in October.
LSG Sky Chefs was also able to increase its airline catering related sales in all regions and extend agreements with strategic customers. These include worldwide contracts with American Airlines, United Airlines, US Airways and Alaska Airlines. Contracts were also renewed with Thomson Airways in Great Britain and Ireland and with Alitalia in Italy. Furthermore, business relationships with growing airlines in the Middle East were strengthened. In addition, more and more airline customers are opting for innovative and
environmentally-friendly equipment solutions and logistics services the company offers.
The company’s activities to penetrate near-core adjacent markets also paid off. Business with retail chains in the United States grew as a result of an expansion targeting existing and potential customers. The train catering team developed a complete portfolio of innovative products and services which were unveiled at the leading international trade fair for transport technology, Innotrans. In addition, the school catering team in Hong Kong continuously grew the number of clients.
For 2013, LSG Sky Chefs expects moderate growth for its core business. The company will intensify its innovation and sustainability approach in order to generate added customer benefits and enrich existing business relationships, in addition to acquiring new customers. Activities planned for the adjacent markets will be expanded further so as to continue to grow and compensate for fluctuations within the airline business. A strong focus will also remain on consistent cost management by means of standardization and optimization of process flows and business models.
"We will proceed with our ambitious business strategy to achieve profitable growth while improving our cost competitiveness. At the same time we will emphasize our differentiation by applying our leading quality claim, while maintaining our reach for excellence in our day-to-day activities," Walter Gehl added.

Neu-Isenburg – LSG Sky Chefs and Mercedes-Benz Lkw have launched a pilot project to develop a catering truck based on the Mercedes-Benz Econic that runs on NGT (Natural Gas Technology). The aim is to reduce emissions in a significant and sustainable manner. The loading and off-loading processes are also being analyzed regarding potential vehicle optimizations.
The LSG Sky Chefs fleet has more than 4,000 catering trucks at 200 locations around the globe. "With this pilot project, we want to compile an economic and ecological requirements profile for a future catering vehicle. In cooperation with Mercedes-Benz Lkw, we are testing how a truck with an alternative engine, such as the Econic NGT, can meet our requirements on the airport apron," said Jochen Müller, COO of LSG Sky Chefs.
"We are happy to be LSG Sky Chefs’ cooperation partner. The Econic NGT is a well-proven vehicle concept with fewer emissions than one with a conventional engine," said Thomas Witzel, Head of Sales and Marketing Mercedes-Benz Trucks Germany.
The test catering truck, which is fueled with CNG (Compressed Natural Gas), has been part of the LSG Sky Chefs fleet at Frankfurt airport since the end of November. The first results of the pilot project are expected by the second half of 2013.

Neu-Isenburg, Germany – LSG Sky Chefs is participating in InnoTrans for the first time this year. InnoTrans is the leading transport technology trade fair being held in Berlin, Germany, September 18-21.
LSG Sky Chefs already holds the number one position in travel catering throughout Europe. Beyond its 70 years of experience in airline catering, encompassing a customer base of more than 300 international airlines, the company has also been providing services to rail companies. These include SJ (Swedish Railroad) in the Swedish cities of Gothenburg, Malmo and Stockholm since 2005, and the Thello night trains between Paris, France and Venice, Italy since December 2011.
