STUDENT NEWS

1. Do You Have A Dream? You can sign up now to interview for the MTV show "MADE". If you have a dream or a goal that you will absolutely not let any obstacle stop you from achieving and you would like to have your story featured on TV go to the counseling office and get an interview packet for MTV two time Emmy winning show that is all about making dreams come true. Casting interviews are Friday, December 4^th so get going now!

2. Seniors: You are reminded that ads for the annual with payments are due to Mr. Unckles in Room 302 or his mailbox in the Main Office by Thursday, December 10, 2009.

3. Seniors: Graduation Applications are due TODAY into the counseling center. They must have your parent/guardian signature. If you need assistance, see your counselor.

4. The deadline for purchasing an annual is fast approaching! You have until Thursday, December 10th to purchase one guaranteeing you a copy in the spring when they are distributed. Cost is $60.00 No waiting lists or partial payments will be accepted.

5. Registration for the winter session of driver's education has now started. You can pick up registration packets or get questions answered in the main office, portable # 7 or portable # 17. The start date is November 30th and the cost is $375 with a minimum down payment of $100. You must be at least 15 years old by December 8th.

Career Center Information

1. The Princeton Prize in Race Relations award application is now available- In order to recognize, support, and encourage the young people of our country who have demonstrated a commitment to advancing the cause of positive race relations, Princeton University annually sponsors an annual awards program for high school students- If you are a high school student involved in an activity that is helping to improve race relations in your school or community, check out this opportunity. See Ms. LaFortune in the Career Center for an application or go online to http://www.princeton.edu/pprize/

2. Juniors and Seniors- College representatives are scheduling their visits to LSHS, so be sure to check the list outside the Career Center. You must have permission of the teacher for the period you will miss.

Senior Information

1. The sign up sheet for the graduation rehearsal bus is in the main office. Please sign up by Friday, June 5^th. Bus leaves promptly at 8 a.m.

2. Seniors - please notify Mrs. Gessaman or Mrs. Pollestad in the Counseling Center where to send your final transcript for college next year.

3. Senior Yearbook Signing Party  Wednesday, May 27^th from 6 9 p.m. in the LSHS Cafeteria. Free sharpies, food and drink. You will need your LSHS student identification to pick up your yearbook. If you have not purchased a yearbook you will have an opportunity to do so at this time for $65 CASH ONLY. This is a Senior only event!

All Students

1. Mrs. Wolf in the Business Office has posted a list of students and their fines which should be paid prior to receiving your yearbook

2. PROM PICTURES will be available to pick up on Friday, May 22 during all three lunches in the 400 bldg. foyer.

3. LAST CALL for films for the Viking Film Festival! Films must be submitted by this Friday at 3:00 P.M. to be guaranteed a preview. After that, you can still try, without a guarantee of admission. One to two minutes is not too short-get your films seen by friends and others. The Festival will be in the library on Friday, May 29^th , 6:30-9:00 P.M.

4. This week is customer appreciation week in the COVE! Come check out dot day Thursday along with other activities and specials in the COVE.

5. Coming next week (May 26 29): the twelfth annual NHS/ASB Elementary School Book Drive. This year's drive benefits Crow Creek Elementary School which is located on a Native American reservation in Buffalo County, south Dakota. Buffalo County is among the six most impoverished of the more than 3,100 U. S. Counties. Students should bring books appropriate for kindergarten through sixth graders to their 1^st period classes. The class which brings in the most books will receive a free continental breakfast, courtesy of NHS. We can't accept magazines, encyclopedias, textbooks, or books which are inappropriate in content of reading level. NHS would like to acknowledge the support of ASB for our book drive again this year.

6. Congratulations to Lauren American Horse and Ashleigh Lawlis who were 1st place winners in the PUD art contest.

7. There is a required meeting for all students who will be taking AP English Literature next year on Tuesday, May 26th after school in room 427 from 2:15 to 3:00. During the meeting students will receive their summer homework and other essential information. Students who don't attend the meeting will be placed in a different English class and one of many students on the waiting list will take their place. If you have a serious time/date conflict, please see Mrs. Tilley this week (in advance) to arrange an alternate meeting time.

8. Would you like to experience government and history instead of just reading about it? Sign up for an exciting trip to Washington, D.C. during Spring Break of next year! If you are interested please see Mr. Hayman in Room 109 or Ms. Fry in room 404. We will be able to visit places like the Smithsonian, White House, Capitol, and Arlington National Cemetery just to name a few! Sign up soon!

9. Yearbook distribution will be Friday May 29^th during 6^th period. LSHS student ID will be required for pick up. If you have not purchased a yearbook and would like to purchase one, plan to be at Room 302 at 6:30 a.m. Monday, June 1, 2009 (line usually starts at 5:45 a.m.). Cost is $65.00 cash only. Only 1 book per person.

10. A friendly reminder from your librarian All items are due back to the library by Friday, May 29^th so inventory can begin.

11. Study Table updates: The following Wednesday Study Tables will be in Room 305: May 27^th and June 3^rd. On the afternoon of June 10^th Study Table will be in P-15 with Ms. Sontra.

12. The gym will be open after school each Tuesday through the end of the school year!

v Compass USA is hiring Conversation Pals for Japanese students this summer, as a conversation pal you will provide foreign students an opportunity to improve their knowledge of the English language and experience the social and cultural aspects of life in the US. You will work with students, the program coordinator and program teacher, but interacting only with students. You will receive $90 per week (for 3 weeks) for your participation. You will be expected to attend classes and work with your student during their class times. See Ms. LaFortune in the Career Center for additional details and/or an application.

v Western Washington University has many different Summer Youth Programs available. Including Sailing camp for students ages 11-18, a youth theatre institute (grades 6-12). For grades 9-12 there are other programs including: Filmmaking in Action, Computer Science 101, Veterinary Science, and World of Digital Photography. College Quest is for grades 10-12, with Animation Programming, Criminal Law & Justice, Renewable Energy, and Climate Quest. There is also a Dance Academy for Youth ages 12-18. 2. Congratulations to the following students who participated in the state FBLA competition last week in Spokane: Philip Gerou took 3rd place in Cyber Security which qualifies him for Nationals later this summer. He also took 5th place in Networking Concepts
The web site team of Solon Scott and Kaitlyn (Marie) Johnson placed 5^th.

3. Food Handler's class Wednesday, May 27^th from 6:30 8 p.m. at Elim Free Lutheran Church (next to LSHS) football field. Cost is $10 cash payable that evening during registration starting at 6 p.m. Questions? Please call 425-334-3173.

4. Ryan's Solution Foundation, is hosting an event on Saturday April 25^th - a 10K and 2.5 mile run-walk called "Stepping Out Against Drugs in Our Community". This is a free event for students under 18. Adults may register for $25 with a T-shirt and $15 without. We will be raising funds for the foundation through t-shirt sales at the event ($15.00).

5. The Opera Club is taking reservations to see the dress rehearsal of Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro" on April 29. The cost is twenty dollars per student (ten for the bus and ten for the ticket) We have only twenty spots left. If you are interested see Mr. Kelly in room 401 or Ms Tilley in room 427 to sign up. A representative from the opera will be here later in the month to provide a presentation about Mozart and "Figaro" for those for whom opera is a new experience

v Highland Elementary is looking for volunteers to help tutor struggling students one-on-one with reading and math. It will be 2 to 3 days a week from 2:15 3:00pm. 4. A black & white photography contest is being held by the Snohomish County Arts Council! Students are allowed to turn in only one black and white print, and it must be mounted and overmatted with a black, white, or off-white mat, no bigger than 11 x 14 inches. The due date is FRIDAY, APRIL 10th! See Mrs. Granillo for details and an application! She is in Room 134.

Applications are currently being accepted for the 31st Annual Washington State Patrol-Kiwanis Youth Law Enforcement Career Camp to be held at the WSP Academy in Shelton, July 25th through July 31, 2009. This gives students a variety of experiences and exposure to federal, state, county, and local law enforcement as a possible career path. You must have completed 10th or 11th grade by the beginning of camp to attend; have no criminal record; be healthy and capable of strenuous exercise and stress; be interested in a Criminal Justice career. Applications can be downloaded from the WSP home under "Outreach" or copies are available in the Career Center.

3. News about the shoe drive! Community Service hours are being offered - 1 hour for every 2 pairs of shoes. Go clean out the closet! The $1.00 donation is a suggestion, you can still donate shoes without it.

4. Spring Traffic Safety registration has started stop by Portable 17, Main Office or Room 203 for a registration packet and more information. Cost is $375.00. Hurry class limit is 60 students.

6. ASB cards are $40.00 payable in the Business Office before school, after school and during your lunch.

1. Spring Traffic Safety registration has started stop by Portable 17, Main Office or Room 203 for a registration packet and more information. Cost is $375.00. Hurry class limit is 60 students.

2. Want to win $75.00? Enter one of your photographs in the Snohomish County PUD "Energy" Photo Contest. The photo should be an 8 x 10 un-matted print (color or black & white) that expresses the theme "Energy." You do not need to be currently enrolled in a photography class in order to enter. See Mrs. Granillo in Room 134 for an entry form. All entries must be turned in to Mrs. Granillo by March 18th.

3. ASB cards are $40.00 payable in the Business Office before school, after school and during your lunch.

4. The Teens Against Tobacco Use group, (also known as "TATU"), is sponsoring a shoe drive to help people all around the world who have inadequate, or no footware. Through the Soles4Souls organization, we will be attempting to collect 1200 pairs of shoes next week, which represents the number of people who die every day in the U.S. due to tobacco-related illnesses. A $1 dollar donation to the cause will help ensure we have the funds to pay for shipping to the Soles4Souls headquarters in Nevada. Look for the Soles4Souls logo on boxes in the cafeteria all next week.

5. Viking swimmers and divers are reminded to turn in your swim bags to Erin at the pool or face a $75.00 fine!

6. Students You are reminded that the parking lot is off limits during the school day that includes lunch. You are not to be at your cars!
