Pollay Advertising Collection Posted to LTDL

Richard W. Pollay is a past Curator of the History of Advertising Archives, University of British Columbia. He has written many articles for peer reviewed journals, US Surgeon General Reports and National Cancer Institute Monographs based upon his own research and access to corporate documents. A large portion of Dr. Pollay's 10,000+ collection of cigarette print advertising was processed and indexed by Roswell Park Cancer Institute and originally housed on the Tobacco Documents Online (TDO) site. TDO has graciously shared the images and metadata with LTDL.

The Pollay Advertising Collection currently contains 7,572 documents of mostly colored print advertisements created by the tobacco industry. More documents will be added as we receive them.

New CTR Documents and USSTC Audio Tapes Posted Today

A total of 28,634 new documents were posted to the Legacy Tobacco Documents Library today.
The breakdown is as follows:

Council for Tobacco Research (CTR) - 28522 documents (from Tobacco Documents Online's Roswell Park Collection)
US Smokeless Tobacco (USSTC) - 101 records of audio recordings (available through the UCSF Library's Archives and Special Collections)
Philip Morris - 1 document
RJ Reynolds - 10 documents (very large documents)

New USSTC Videos and More Bliley Docs for LTDL

114 U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Company (USSTC) videos are now part of the LTDL Multimedia Collection.

USSTC is a leading manufacturer of smokeless tobacco products including Skoal and Copenhagen. The 114 new videos are from 1970-1980s and include numerous commercials featuring Charlie Daniels – country and southern rock musician, Carlton Fisk – baseball hall of famer, and Shep Messing – soccer goalkeeper. USSTC was an active sponsor of American football players, NASCAR, the Skoal Bandit team, Winston Cup winner Harry Gant and the yearly Copenhagen-Skoal Rodeo Superstars Championship.

To find these videos on LTDL, search the Multimedia collection for “origcn: us smokeless tobacco". If a particular video is available for immediate viewing on Internet Archive, the record will link to the video under "Access Now at Internet Archive"

Highlights from this collection can also be seen on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/user/ltdlmultimedia. These clips have proven very popular with more than 1,500 viewings since February 25, 2009.

Fellowships in Tobacco Control Research at UCSF

Applications for Fellowships in Tobacco Control Research at UCSF are due May 6, 2009, for fellowships beginning July 1, 2009.

The purpose of the fellowship is to attract individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds in medical, biological, social, behavioral, and policy sciences to develop a new generation of academic leaders in tobacco control. Upon completion of training, fellows will be well positioned to be active participants in crucial policy debates about the future development and implementation of tobacco control interventions.

The fellowship supports two years of postdoctoral training in tobacco related research. Postdoctoral fellows will have exposure to diverse training including both didactic coursework and individualized mentoring to build a personalized research program. Fellows have come from an array of disciplines, including medicine, public health, nursing, economics, political science, law, sociology, psychology, and cell biology.

We offer individual mentorship with UCSF faculty along with courses in tobacco specific topics, health policy, cancer control and prevention, grant and scientific writing skills, career development, interdisciplinary research, and biostatistics.

Postdoctoral trainees will receive an annual salary commensurate with their experience, approximately $37,000-$51,000, according to the NIH stipend scale. Applicants may learn more about the Center, the fellowship program, and review the list of UCSF faculty and their research interests at the CTCRC website, tobacco.ucsf.edu.

15,000+ New Documents Added to LTDL

We've been hard at work adding new tobacco industry documents to the Legacy Tobacco Documents Library!

These additions include documents pulled down from the industry sites; "Bliley" and industry documents from Tobacco Documents Online (TDO); BAT documents from the Guildford Depository; and over 2000 Philip Morris Engineering Department documents that had previously been in storage on microfilm.

The breakdown of additions is as follows:

Brown & Williamson - 691 documents; 7315 pages
British American Tobacco - 12,443 documents; 31,205 pages
Philip Morris microfilm - 2004 documents; 92,576 pages
RJ Reynolds - 75 documents; 71,004 pages

Video Short of Students Searching LTDL

Tar Wars 4 - An Epic Adventure
James Valastro, of memeFILMS, an organization dedicated to youth and media-literacy, has created another great short video project combining the Legacy Tobacco Documents Library and a team of students at Woodstock Middle School in Vermont.

In this 6 minute comedy, Woodstock students search for and discover tobacco industry documents outlining product placement tactics and marketing to youth. When the tobacco industry discovers the teens are conducting these searches, the battle begins and the light sabers come out!

Putting the Tobacco Industry's Words to Work for You

The University of California, San Francisco Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education, announces its one-day workshop on using tobacco industry documents for advocacy.

The workshop will cover:

introduction to tobacco industry documents databases, including the multimedia database
hands-on practice searching and extracting key industry documents under the supervision of expert documents researchers
examples of ways in which the documents can be of use to promote tobacco-free communities
opportunities to network and brainstorm with top documents researchers and other advocates.

New Formats for the Tobacco Documents Bibliography

The new and improved UCSF Library website is up and running! Stop by and take a look at the new Tobacco Control Archives section and let us know what you think.

In addition to a new and streamlined format, we now have 2 ways for users to view the ever-growing Tobacco Documents Bibliography:

1) The Tobacco Documents Bibliography page on the UCSF Library Web Site now has a section titled "Newly Added" - this eliminates the need for scrolling through the bibliography to find recent additions.

2) The Tobacco Documents Bibliography is now also available through RefShare - a feature of RefWorks which allows sharing of references online. Once in the bibliography database, users can export selected references, sort by a variety of fields, print references, create a bibliography of selected papers, and subscribe to an RSS feed of additions to the Tobacco Documents Bibliography - this means anytime we add new references you will automatically be notified and sent those citations (up to 20). (You do not need to have a subscription to RefWorks to access this shared bibliography.)

New Multimedia on Internet Archive

The UCSF Tobacco Industry Video and Tobacco Industry Audio Collections have reached a milestone! We currently have 1000 items (890 videos and 110 audio recordings) on Internet Archive available for viewing and downloading.

Listen to a recording of a 2002 R.J. Reynolds presentation at the Consumer Analyst Group of New York conference or watch a Philip Morris anti-smoking infomercial directed at parents and children.

You can also browse the collections by video keywords and audio keywords.

UCSF Tobacco Control Symposium - February 20th

The UCSF Tobacco Control Symposium and Poster Session entitled "It's About a Billion Lives" will take place at UC San Francisco on Friday, February 20, 2009 from 8am to 12:30pm. Put on by the UCSF Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education (CTCRE), the symposium will feature speakers from the American Heart Association, the CTCRE, and the Cardiovascular Research Institute, to name a few. New Privileged Document Records Added

Today, January 8th, we added a total of 78,380 new documents to the Legacy Tobacco Documents Library. The bulk of the new additions are records of British American Tobacco (BAT) and Philip Morris documents that were withheld from public view under claims of privilege - known in LTDL as "privileged documents". With privileged documents, there is no document image but there is an index record with detailed information about the document.

The breakdown of new documents is as follows:

70,527 BAT privileged document records
7,794 Philip Morris privileged document records
59 RJ Reynolds documents

Fellowships in Tobacco Control Research for 2009

The UCSF Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education (CTCRE) invites applications for fellowships in policy-relevant tobacco control research. Completed applications are due January 28, 2009, for Fellowships beginning July 1, 2009.

CTCRE represents a partnership between UCSF faculty and the Legacy Tobacco Documents Library (LTDL). UCSF is a leader in tobacco control research and the LTDL was the first to make proprietary, tobacco documents, accessible on the Internet.

Program Purpose:

To train recent MD or PhD Recipients to launch independent carries in tobacco policy relevant research: postdoctoral trainees will receive an annual salary commensurate with their experience, approximately $37,000-$51,000, according to the NIH stipend scale. These positions are supported by an R25T NIH training grant.

In some cases scholars with more than three years of postdoctoral training may be accepted for special research projects. Advanced or senior scholars will receive an annual salary commensurate with their experience and subject to funding availability. Source of funding may include support from the scholar’s home institution, faculty-mentor funding, or an R25T NIH training grant.

Trainees will be recruited from a variety of fields including basic science, social science, public health, clinical science, political science, history, economics, law and marketing. They will study and conduct research in association with UCSF faculty mentors. Students Search the Documents

James Valastro of memefilms has produced a video titled Searching the American Legacy Tobacco Documents that combines document searching, students, and video production. After attending the UCSF Tobacco Documents workshop in the Spring, Mr. Valastro himself conducted a 5-hour workshop for middle-school and high-school students, teaching them to search the millions of pages of once secret internal tobacco documents. This 9 minute video is the result of the workshop and a wonderful showcase for the students' interest in critical thinking, health education and media production.

BATDA and Smokeless Tobacco collections now on LTDL

Today, the entire body of documents in the British American Tobacco Documents Archive (BATDA) was merged with the Legacy Tobacco Documents Library, bringing the document count in LTDL to over 50 million pages in 9.7 million documents. You can now search for BATDA documents separately in LTDL (choose just the "British American Tobacco" collection on the search page) and in conjunction with the 13 other tobacco industry collections.

With this merge comes a few changes to be aware of:

1) The BATDA website is still up and online at http://bat.library.ucsf.edu only now when you conduct a search from BATDA, your results will be returned in LTDL.

2) In order to allow a uniform search across all collections in LTDL, a few of the field codes were changed in the BAT collection. Seasoned BATDA users who are used to using the two-letter field codes should consult the Expanded Field Definition section in BATDA to see what has changed.

We realize this merging of the two digital libraries may take some time to get used to but we hope this ultimately provides a better, more comprehensive and fruitful search experience for all researchers.

In addition to the BAT collection, a new collection of Smokeless Tobacco documents have been added to LTDL under the collection name "US Smokeless Tobacco". This collection contains 128,695 pages in 11,258 documents and we plan to post another large set of Smokeless Tobacco documents in the near future.

BATDA merging with LTDL

We are pleased to announce that later this week the British American Tobacco Document Archive (BATDA) will be merged with the Legacy Tobacco Documents Library. Doing so will allow you to search all the US documents at the same time that you search the BAT documents.

We wanted to alert BATDA users to these changes so you’re not surprised when you use the site.

You will still be able to search the BAT documents through the current site, (http://bat.library.ucsf.edu) or through the LTDL site (http://legacy.library.ucsf.edu.) Regardless of which portal you use to do the search, the results will be returned from the Legacy Tobacco Documents Library (LTDL).

You will be able to retrieve any documents that you’ve bookmarked using the bat.library.ucsf.edu URLs. In addition, all of BATDA’s functionality remains, regardless of which portal is used to search the BAT documents.

Besides having results returned from LTDL, BATDA users may notice one other change: some of the field codes used in advanced searching were modified to a uniform standard shared by LTDL.

New Liggett & Myers "Bliley" documents

812 new L&M documents were posted to the "Bliley" special collection on the LTDL today.

The Bliley collection is a special collection comprised of documents that defendants in State of Minnesota v. Philip Morris, et al, claimed were privileged or otherwise protected from disclosure. While the documents were being disputed in court, Congressman Thomas Bliley, the Chairman of the House Commerce Committee, subpoenaed the documents in question and posted them on the Commerce Committee web site.

Also in this new release, we have created a section called "Getting Started" which is intended for visitors that are new to the site or unfamiliar with LTDL's content. You will find the link for the section on the help page as well as the home page directly under Search the Documents -

"Getting Started" points the user to the search tutorial, highlights the types of documents and resources on LTDL, and provides examples of how others have used the tobacco documents for research projects, newspaper articles, exhibits, and more.
