It heartens and encourages me, in this day of unprecedented (and unrealized by the majority of Americans I fear) erosion - hell, the outright destruction - of personal liberty in the US, to see sites by men and women such as yourself. Intelligent and educated persons who have sought out and studied the legal and philosophical roots of the American system. And almost across the board I find that those who are most well-grounded in and intellectually honest about the antecedents of the US Constitution (and the Constitution itself) have libertarian roots or leanings. But why should I be surprised? My team has always tended to be the GOP. But beginning with the complete abandonment of conservative principles by so many Republicans in Congress during the GW Bush administrations, and, sad to say, by Bush himself, I am coming around to the view that there is no hope left that the GOP will ever champion libertarian-conservative philosophy. However, I don't think I'm alone when I see the grassroots Tea Parties spring up like mushrooms across the nation. Could it be that all those with conservative/libertarian leanings are, as a widespread movement, maybe even as a nation., inching ever closer to going John Galt ? I can only hope. Meanwhile it takes thousands of men and women like you to man the walls and light the signal fires. Thank you so very much for your past service, and your service now as a fighter for liberty. I know keeping up the site is hard, demanding work, and too often thankless and maybe even discouraging. I hope this little comment helps you feel the attitude of so many of the unseen fellow lover of liberty out there who you may somehow affect with your efforts. There are, Will notes, 14 million Americans who are already eligible for currently funded programs -- like SCHIP, veterans' benefits, Medicare, and Medicaid. The more closely we examine these figures, the more that number of 45.7 million begins to melt away, like an iceberg floating south. As long as there have been governments, they have been mesmerized by numbers -- some of which prove to be seriously inaccurate. Winston Churchill wrote about one of the most celebrated examples of government's self-deception by numbers. During World War I, the British Admiralty weighed in strongly against a convoy system for their merchant ships to meet the threat of death-by-strangulation from Germany's U-boats. The great and powerful Sea Lords said there was no way the Royal Navy could protect all 2,500 voyages per week of merchant ships with their small number of 50-60 Navy destroyers. Convoys would not work, the Sea Lords said adamantly. With the very life of his country at stake, Churchill showed how the Admiralty's numbers did not hold up. Those 2,500 voyages per week actually included thousands of small ships plying their usual coastal trade. The absolutely essential overseas trade -- Britain's lifeline -- consisted of no more than 120-140 voyages a week. The whole edifice of [the Sea Lords'] logical argument collapsed when the utterly unsound foundation of 2,500 was shorn away, Churchill wrote. Convoys were instituted -- and saved Britain. Will the crisis atmosphere about health care also dissipate in the hot glare of more accurate numbers? Will we find the crisis to be rather like that southbound iceberg, or like the Admiralty's inflated 2,500-voyage figure? We may not think the life of America is in as great jeopardy now as Churchill's Britain was when menaced by the U-boat. But it surely is. If we take a giant step toward government control of health care, we will step irretrievably closer to a regime where government decides who shall live and who shall die. I was saving the money for a catastophic occurance, which didn't happen. After I quit working to take care of my husband, I went on his insurance, and am now in the process of looking for a suplemental. I have nearly $4000 still in my health savings account, which would cover any huge medical bill. My co worker had the same insurance. She had over $2000 in her savings account, when she had to have surgery. $2000 of her bill was paid up front, and she paid $2000 out of pocket, and the rest of her bill was paid in full by her health savings plan. There are plans available, but too many people don't access them for whatever reasons. And some of those reasons are because they don't want to be responsible for their own health.

I do realize that we have not been governed constitutionally for quite a long time, now, and our law makers are not just treading down some slippery slope term after term after term, but have been writing in the muck amd mire for decades. But, it is quite the openness in our Constitution that allows for the likes of the current auto maker-, banker-, insurance man-, commander-in-chief to have attained his position, since there are but TWO requirements for being able to hold the post: being a natural-born U.S. citizen and having attained the age of 35. This is to what I was referring: is this a flaw, or one of the things that makes our defined form of governemt so great?

Comment from [JT] --- CB, If your a progressive or a neo-con, then there is no flaw in the current system as it stands, since progressives love big government and I do believe it is the current form/system of government that allowed Obama, to expand the government .It started with the Father of American Fascism Woodrow Wilson, and his faithful follower FDR, it was their combination of Fascism and Communism, that spawned the radical we have now, A guy who took over GM and wiped the shareholders out! A true fascist hates the concept of private property, of course he justified this by calling the shareholders greedy speculators can you imagine calling retired teachers and police officers who's pension funds were invested in those shares greedy. Maybe my good buddy Bearcat can come on here and explain how Obama's destruction of Capitalism will help those retirees, if you don't know, Bearcat, is the type of liberal who believes if you take an engine/capitalism out of a car/economy, it will run better and forever!

And what happens, should you choose to answer that one, and the amount you get to claim on your tax form is lower than the amount you put on the census? Big Brother is going to put the answers to these questions in a Big Goverment database - for what? To compare information provided - by US, the TAXPAYERS - on various goverment forms? I'll only be telling Uncle Sugar how many people live in my house when I get the form next year.

On the bright side, my liberal son and his wife, and my democratic brother and his wife, have had enough with Obama, and became Independents. I assume they will pass it on. I wonder how many democrats are disappointed in the man who they thought was their messiah? This is enough to celebrate. I hope conservatives of all parties rally, and regain our independence.

Michelle Obama said, in a speech, that this is the first time she loved her country. It is the first time, I'm really embarrassed and worried for us. In the past, I knew we would overcome, but now, the oppression is moving at such a fast pace, I'm not so sure. Once people get used to something for nothing , it's hard to take away. Comment from [HappyG] --- I absolutely agree, Tom. Another point to make is to use Sen. Byrd and Strom Thurmond as examples, of lifers who can no longer contribute. Strom had to be held up at times, and became a bit senile, yet continued to get voted in. Byrd can barely speak or stand, and when he does talk, he gets confused, but like Thurmond, gets voted in again. Part of the blame is the voters, who like the status quo, if only for sentimental reasons. Another is voter ignorance. Like the House that never read the Energy Bill, but voted for it, they assume...and we know what that means. And, another huge reason is voter apathy, those voters who don't take 5 minutes to vote, for whatever reasons they conjure in their minds.
