Day № 2 Kitchen Demo

2016-10-17T20:09:00.000-05:00

OK...so I've kinda stretched the truth about the Day we are actually on! It is more like № LOTS OF DAYS! Life truly does get in the way of sharing our progress...arghhh!! So...away we go...let's get caught up. Here is where we are at! Slow but Steady...One Step at a Time...all seem to be our mantra. As we continue to do most of this demo project on our own... in-between running our vintage business & the hubby's FT job.
➳ Plastic Tile Backsplash-GONE! But not without a lot of muscle & elbow grease...OUCH! The tile itself was not so bad...but the Tile Mastic (glue) was challenging to say the least. Cannot even imagine if we had a bigger kitchen. We just kept keeping our eye on the prize...the soon to be... CLEAN CRISP WHITE SUBWAY TILE!

➳ Partition Wall [including Studs & Header]-GONE!

Girl Power + Hubby Power = Gettin' it Done

It helps when your girlfriend's hubby is 7ft tall...thank you!

➳ Electric Work-In Progress!

This is when we call in the professionals...and we LOVE his amazing work!

A few more electric projects on the To Do List...but will need to wait patiently as we follow the order of our Kitchen Renovation Time Line.

SO grateful for my high school gal pal...

with not only all of her awesome demo & design talents,

but also her organizational skills and LOTS of advice!

➳ Our Inspiration Photo

We are dreaming of...

Shiplap

Free Floating Salvaged Wood Shelves

Concrete Countertops

White Painted Cabinets

Industrial Farmhouse Lighting

& MORE

Lucky US!

Stay tuned...

Ha, should be more like come back around in Lots & Lots of Days!

But...we promise to continue blogging about our progress.

Day №. 1 Kitchen Demo

2016-09-02T13:29:00.000-05:00

Day №. 1 DEMO

A million laughs with a high school gal pal...priceless!

[here's her "let's rock this demo" attire...complete with candy cigarette]

Our goal for today was to "see the light" into the dining area!

After prepping the kitchen & laying coverall sheets over all of the surfaces

(for anyone who has gone through demo while living in the house...

you know that there is absolutely NO way of complete coverage) we got started.

Ha! That crazy, teeny-tiny dust gets EVERYWHERE!

As we got the first sledge hammer whack into the wall...

was when we realized that we are dealing with plaster.

After living in the house for 10 years one would think I could be sure about this...

but a girl can dream of drywall!

The whacks were in much need of super girl strength

...WOW plaster is thick.

And shoot, complete with heavy duty wire mesh around all of the seams...YAY!

But...we made our goal...cabinets & wall down and the light was shining through!

Can we get an AMEN?

So excited that our first day is done...what a feeling of accomplishment.

Two gal pals, lots of tools, tons of sore muscles & laughs...as we head into Day 2!

Can't wait!

And if it couldn't have gotten any better... ➳ one of the sledge hammer whacks produced our state, the State of IL ➳ we found hardwood flooring under the ceramic tile ➳ the wall was not a load bearing wall

Stay tuned for more Farmhouse Kitchen renovation to come!

Lucky Junk Kitchen Renovation

2016-08-26T17:57:00.002-05:00

authenticity |ˌôTHenˈtisitē|

noun

the quality of being authentic
Let's here it for being authentic...as far as I'm concerned, there is no other way to be. My hubby & I both believe in living truly authentic lives. And for all of you that shop my brick & mortar, Lucky Junk, nothing could be more vintagely (ha, made up a new word) authentic!
I get asked SO often as a vintage home decor shop owner to post pictures of my own homes interior. As, enduring & flattering as that request is, I have never had the guts to do it. I don't want to disappoint any of our Lucky Junkers.
All of my time, creativity & energy are used up most days by the shop. Not that I'm complaining, but gosh it sure would be awesome to not only do the constant Re-Styles at Lucky Junk...but some for my own home too!
Well, with the encouragement of one of my gal pals.planner-draftswoman.demolition goddess & of course the thumbs up from the hubby we are finally taking on our first "demo" interior remodel.
So with authenticity by my side...let's embark together on this Budget-Concscience, U-Do-It Transformation of our Dutch Colonial Cottage Kitchen circa 1942.

Not all you see was of course original to this era, like the purple, yes purple laminate countertops or the Big Box Hardware Store faux stained glass lighting

that we inherited when we purchased the home 10 years ago.

But yes, oh yes, the knotty pine wood cabinets are all of 1942...can we get an AMEN!

We truly liked the separation between the kitchen & dining area when we first bought the home.

But, now with this nagging-won't go away feeling that we want to live a simpler life...

we are ready for an Urban Farmhouse Kitchen Decor, complete with some open shelves.

The open shelves will keep us honest and minimal...

using & purchasing only kitchenware that we need.

We plan on leaving some cabinetry...

as the wall separating these two rooms is what we will be focusing on to start.

The journey is about to begin & will continue to evolve.

Would be honored if you come along for the ride.

2 much FUN! [second year anniversary celebration]

You touched our LUCKY Hearts!

2014-08-19T10:42:00.000-05:00

Lots of windshield time the beginning of August this year on the 127 Yard Sale through Tennessee & Kentucky!
Our journey was met with unbelievably beautiful scenery, mouth-watering BBQ, rusty-crusty-shabby finds that filled up our whole picker truck and lots of fun folks with stories to share!
And as it does happen in life (thank God)...there was one very special moment that touched our hearts!
As we were making our way down Route 127 I was intrigued by this sweet cottage... and from the pictures below...you'd be pulling in with us, right?

There was a sign at the residence that said "see my creations at the yard sale in the next field". Well, we couldn't get there fast enough... saw a table that had one our two nature-type creations, but no one was there...sigh.
We pulled our picker truck down the road, but I couldn't stop thinking about this artist. The next morning we were heading onto Kentucky...and I was SO happy to discover that we had to drive past this yard sale again...and I was crossing my fingers they would be there.
As we pulled up, I could see that the once barren table was now being filled with incredible, stunning nature creations. We walked up and met Henry. We were greeted with the most welcoming smile...no one could resist. We shared our joy that he was there...our compliments regarding his sweet cottage & that we couldn't wait to hear his artist story and start shopping!
He was over the top appreciative... and couldn't believe how enamored we were with his work.
Little did we know that at that moment, time was not going matter, nor our next destination. For Henry started to share the story of his struggles...and we were hanging on every word.
He explained that he was depressed, anxious and had been in bed the last 2 years. He would set up for shows with all of his incredible talent & creations and not show up. This was the first time in such a long time that he actually made it! Wow...and we were there to be his first customers!
NO CHANCE MEETINGS IN LIFE!
I don't know why at that moment, but I shared with him my phrase that I use in my workshops to describe painting with chalk-based paints... "The Art of Imperfect Perfection".
He was blown away and said, "that is ME"...and could not write it down fast enough. Through all of our tears and of course shopping... we realized that this was the BEST moment of our journey!
And of course then to come home to the tragic news of Robin Williams...it was all too much!
You never know how you will be touched or touch another soul... be fearless and live with your heart wide open!
Here's some of Henry's creations...available at the Lucky Junk Shop.

A few items from my Grand Ma's French Attic!

2014-03-26T20:15:00.000-05:00

It was a day of wonderful surprises.
First, my USPS Mail Carrier called me {yes, you heard it right} while he was standing in front of my Lucky Junk Shop and said that I had received a package from France & that it would not fit in my mailbox.
You had me at "Hi, this is your Mail Carrier" and then you double barreled me with... "you have a package from France".
I couldn't get to the shop fast enough.
A little back story...before we get to the French Package {sorry}.
It was our Chanceux {Lucky} Day in September 2012 when we met Delphine & Oliver and stayed at their B & B {words cannot even describe the incredible charm} in the French Countryside of the Burgundy Region.
Let's start with a... stone floor, a dog to greet you, champagne from their favorite local vineyard, vintage galore throughout our room, and they still drive their vintage Citroen that they drove on their honeymoon!

Charming French B & B where we stayed!

The note that was carefully tucked inside of my French Package

In past correspondence Delphine had told me

that she might send me some French Vintage Items...a girl can only hope!

Well, keep hope alive...cause dreams do come true!

The anticipation of it's contents was too much to bear!

I carefully {OK, I ripped through the postal paper} to find wrapped items, too many to count.

The first item {and my favorite} is this shabby chic green tin adorned with birds.

As I opened up each of the packages I was so amazed at how many of the items looked like they could have come from an American Grandmother's Attic...how wonderful is that!

What...some of Grand 'Ma's beautiful vintage clothing...I thought I was going to faint.

I've blogged about the value of relationships before...

but it truly makes the world go round...even oceans away!

I'm now dreaming of the special package that I will send Delphine.

Merci Beaucoup!

GUINNESS® + Irish Soda Bread = Lucky Love

2014-03-11T10:24:00.001-05:00

I have written in previous posts about the "combo platter" in life.. and this would be one of those times! Combining GUINNESS® with an Irish Soda Bread recipe...BRILLIANT! It creates a combo of Brown Bread and Soda Bread which produces a rich, dark, moist luscious loaf.

Lucky GUINNESS® Irish Soda Bread

Recipe

Ingredients

1 C regular rolled oats, plus additional

2 C whole wheat flour

1/2 C brown sugar

2 t baking soda

1 t baking powder

1/2 t salt

1/4 C melted butter

2 t vanilla extract

1 C buttermilk

1 (12 fluid ounce) can or bottle of GUINNESS® beer

Directions

Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C)

Grease an 8 x 8 inch baking pan

Mix together the oats, flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt in a bowl.

In a separate large bowl, stir together the butter, vanilla, buttermilk, and GUINNESS®.

Pour the flour mixture into the beer mixture, and gently stir until well blended.

Pour batter into the prepared baking pan, and sprinkle with additional oats if desired.

Bake in preheated oven for 30 minutes, then turn the temperature down to 400 degrees F

(220 degrees C), and bake for an additional 30 minutes.

Turn the oven off, open the door, and allow to cool for 30 minutes in the oven

before turning out onto a wire rack.

You are drawing from your own creativity whiz is drawing from a radiant past of cats who drove you crazy with their playing. It's not copying. It's capturing a sound or a feel that changed your musical direction and bringing it back to life with your own interpretation. In other words, our take on Jazz. Now, keeping jazz alive can't always mean playing the "standards" especially not with this generation. That's why this group we strive to capture the hearts of any age audience my implementing our jazz inspired feel into new, old, and our original music." -Annalee https://facebook.com/annaleejazz Lucky Junk Shop Grand Opening Thursday, 1/16 . Lucky Hand Pie Recipe

2013-09-04T12:46:00.001-05:00

Hope that you will enjoy these...as much as we do! SO easy to make...a real crowd pleaser! We are demonstrating with Cherry...YUM! {but any fruit filling will work}
FRUIT FILLING -3 cups Pitted Fresh or Thawed Frozen Cherries {with their juices} -1 cup Sugar -2 tablespoons Corn Starch -2 tablespoons Orange Juice In a large saucepan combine all the ingredients above and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thickened and bubbly. Set filling aside to cool or cover and chill in refrigerator.

LUCKY PIE CRUST SHORTCUT

-2 packages {2 crusts each} Refrigerator Pie Crust

On a floured surface open up your thawed Refrigerator Pie Crust.

{we actually experimented with the store brand...and it was delicious}

Use a 4"-5" circle cookie cutter {which we didn't have...ooops}.

So, we improvised and used a vintage aluminum bowl and it worked great.

We were able to get 5 circles out of 1 {one} Pie Crust with having to

roll out excess dough for 2 of the 5 pastry circles.

Line a cookie sheet with Parchment Paper & lay out all 5 circles.

Spoon 2 heaping teaspoons of Fruit Filling onto each circle center leaving a border.

Brush Borders with an Egg Wash {1 egg + water}.

Fold pastry over, crimp to seal with fork tines and prick a few times in the center.

Bake in a 375 degree oven for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.

{Hint: Rotate Baking Sheet one time}

Hand Pie Yield: Approx. 20 YUMMY Pies

Special thanks to Midwest Living Magazine August 2013 Issue

Lucky Fruit Hand Pies

2013-08-30T08:25:00.000-05:00

My last blog posting was all about the Bourbon on our recent Kentucky trip... but the one thing I left out was the Hand Pies! It was a Kentucky scorch of a day, we were tired & ready to head home...but then we spotted the tented booth..."Homemade Fruit Hand Pies"!
Well, the road could wait a few minutes...at least we thought. But when we got up to the line, with only one couple in front of us...we heard the vendor say, "We just ran out & it will be a 20-minute wait". The aroma was SO intoxicating that we DID wait!
The 20-minutes dragged on, while our mouths were watering...we could just taste those pies! Little did we know that the couple in front of us took full advantage of the fresh pies... and ordered a DOZEN! Their family kept walking up behind us and shouting out more orders! It wouldn't have been so bad, but homemade these pies were, the vendor was tired... and the DOZEN ordered wanted the incredible drizzle of frosting on top... which seriously was "frosting art" in slow motion! We were in a BAD PIE DREAM!
Patience, patience...and then our time came...we could hardly get the words out... "2 Cherry Pies please"! And of course we ordered the frosting too...not caring at that point that we were going to be standing there another 5 minutes. The wait & the heat were worth it!
So...my husband & I have been thinking about those pies ever since then. In my next blog post I will share our recipe, pictures...and a little bit of Pie Heaven.

Bourbon & Junk...How LUCKY!

2013-08-13T12:31:00.001-05:00

Well, we hit the Happy Road! Not quite the road yet to our Lucky Junk Shop location...but for now (and good for the soul) we took a bend in the road to the Kentucky Bourbon Trail...and along the way found junk! OK...so we knew the junk would be there...and it found us! Wishing you a GREAT rest of your summer...and finding your Happy Road!

First Stop!

Second Stop!

Happy Go-Lucky!

2013-07-23T13:29:00.000-05:00

This is where the rubber meets the Happy Road!

Enough of the gloom & doom, poor us and the big question of WHY our shop space didn't work out.

And onto a new road filled with excitement again, hope and FUN!

You can't kick these tires too many times...before they fill up with air and are ready to zoom!

When the attitude changed...so did our LUCK!

It was a stormy morning when my husband and I had scheduled our Kentucky day trip to see a "darling" (my word not my husband's...LOL) vintage pick-up truck that we had seen online.

As we were leaving the house (5 am) our power went out.

We contemplated rescheduling, but we put caution to the wind and forged ahead.

Luck was on our side...and once we got about an hour from home...the sun came out and we had a beautiful ride. We kept telling each other to promise that we would not offer to purchase the truck unless we both felt the truck love. And that if we didn't purchase...we will have just had a really nice drive together to Kentucky and another truck will come our way.

The minute we pulled up into the owners driveway we both gasped and tried to calm down. It was just what we had been looking for...the last 2 years! The owner, Bill graciously showed us around his property and shared his other vintage car restorations and many awards that he had won throughout the years. Wow!

We were trying to be patient as the tour continued...but we just wanted to see (our) the truck! Bill explained that he had worked for International Harvester for years, retired and started his own Restoration Shop..and that he did all the restoration work on the truck. The truck had been found in OK & stored in a barn.

The story just kept getting better!

Bill had his own personal auto body shop, complete with car lift. He put the truck up and we all walked under. Oh my gosh...my husband could hardly contain himself...it had been restored so wonderfully.

And he and his wife...were SO very nice, too.

We started to feel that the moon & stars were coming into alignment!

Truck love was agreed upon...SOLD!

And even better...for all of us vintage pickers...Bill's wife was having aYard Sale the next day...and she gave me first buy on everything! Our trip was complete.

Our dreams of owning our very own Luck Truck have been fulfilled...

and we are truly heading down the Happy Road

(ok, well not completely smooth...as we both brush up on driving a manual automobile)!

Stay tuned...in future blogs we will show the transformation to the LUCK Truck!

Janet
