L'énigme du chapeau

Quatre personnages sont enterrés dans le sol jusqu'au cou. Ils ne peuvent pas bouger donc ils ne peuvent voir que devant eux. Entre "3" et "4", il y a un mur au travers duquel ils ne peuvent pas voir. Ils savent que deux d'entre eux portent un chapeau rouge et les deux autres, un chapeau blanc. Mais ils ne savent pas de quelle couleur est le chapeau dont ils sont eux-mêmes coiffés. Afin d'éviter d'être fusillés, l'un d'eux doit crier au bourreau la couleur de son chapeau. S'ils donnent une fausse réponse, tous seront fusillés. Ils ne sont pas autorisés à parler et ils ont dix minutes pour trouver la solution.

SOLUTION:
Seul le "2" peut donner une réponse sûre. Au bout d'une minute, "1" n'a rien dit. Il ne peut rien dire car il voit un chapeau blanc et un rouge. Il ne peut donc pas trouver la couleur du sien. Au bout de cette minute de silence "2" comprend que "1" ne voit pas deux chapeaux de la même couleur, sinon il l'aurait dit. De ce fait "2" ne peut avoir un chapeau rouge : Il est donc blanc.

This was for yesterday's edition of The New York Times Book Review. They reviewed two essays. One about adults still living with their parents and another one about the rise of people living alone. I'm very happy to be part of Work/Life 2 the UPPERCASE directory of international illustration. It features 100 professional illustrators from around the world: Camilla Engman, Olaf Hajek, Aaron Leighton, Renata Liwska, John Martz and Matte Stephens, just to name a few.

The book launch and reception will be held this Thursday, April 7, from 5pm to 9pm at the UPPERCASE GALLERY in Calgary.

My comic strips at Society of Illustrators Annual Show.

My comic strips original drawings are on exhibition at SI 53, New York's Society of Illustrators Annual Show. They are part of the Sequential/Series and Uncommissioned Exhibit that will be on until Jan 22, 2011. I was not too confident they would be selected because cartooning is quite new for me. However, the Sequential/Series jury was composed of Françoise Mouly and Nicholas Blechman among others and I thought: hey, here's a good opportunity to get my work in front of these persons I admire so much! It was definitely worth the effort!
