Not every year but there are some of the years that Tibet witness holy year such as Year of Horse, Year of Sheep etc. According to the Tibetan lunar calendar, the imminent year 2014 will be the Year of The Horse that occurs every after twelve years. As per Tibetan custom and tradition, Buddhists tend to make pilgrimages to the holy mountains in the year of horse and to the sacred lakes in the year of sheep.

Mount Kailash

It is said that, one full parikrama (Kora, circuit/circumambulation) of the 32 miles trail around the Kailash mountain erases sins of a lifetime. Dolma La-Pass is the highest point on the Kailash parikrama i.e. acknowledged as “hill of salvation”.

The Year of Horse

It is believed that, circumambulation of Mount Kailash once during year of horse is equivalent to completing 12 circumambulations. The Horse Year Festival 2014 will coincide with Saga Dawa Festival, June 13, 2014. Mount Kailash as sacred site located in western Tibet attracts much more pilgrims than usual in such a year.

It is predicted that, in the Year of Horse 2014, the Kailash may observe extremely high number of pilgrims representing various religions such as Tibetans, Hindus, Buddhist and western visitors. This year long and coveted event is known as “The Great Horse Festival” at Mount Kailash.

Mount Kailash Mansarovar

Mount Kailash Mansarovar trip, the trip of lifetime is famed for Shiva’s devotees to adventure lover. Infact, it is truth to say that, God is omnipresent but at the same time, it is also said that, in some place the divine is even more present. Mount Kailash enshrined Shiva Lingan shaped mountain has been attentive spiritual and sacred site for Shiva’s devotees.

Arrival at the Nepal airport

As we arrived at the Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu, Nepal, we applied for our Nepal tourist visa multiple at the cost of USD $20 for 15 days. When we crossed immigration and customs, we were greeted by garlands by team of our Nepal airport representatives with a true Nepalese hospitality. Than after, we were than escorted to the Hotel Shankar (primitive palace converted to a hotel). I was busy sneaking through bus’s window to enjoy the interesting traffic and great temples, old houses that Kathmandu city houses. As we arrived at the Shankar, we were extremely amazed by the garden and greeneries.

Experience of travelling in a group

Although, it was my first time travelling in a group, I really enjoyed travelling in a group that allows you get to know people you’ve never met and even knew before.  Our group was made up of diverse demographics, 27 British, 2 Australian and 9 Nepalese. Our group had several solo male and female travellers, couples and families ranging in age from 12 to 60s.

Nepali Group leader

Our Nepal leader Lakpa Sherpa, lived and grown up in the mountain region and conquered many of the highest peaks in Nepal was fantastic. Lakpa, a fluent English, Nepalese and Tibetan speaker was embellished with full of knowledge about the history, culture & lifestyles, geographies and politics of Tibet.  He always had things under control; remained calm and had a great good sense of humour. Many of our guests have thanked Lakpa for his fantastic job. Lakpa has led several Mount Kailash trips as well over the years.

Sherpa’s

Many of us have amazing dream of conquer a trip of lifetime. In order to turn such dream into a reality it is important that your trip is managed and led by experts. Lumle Holidays is very fortunate to have many experienced Sherpa’s, guides, leaders and tour managers for the smooth operation of trip of lifetime in the high altitude region. All of our staffs, have been to Mount Kailash Mansarovar several times whereas few of the team members have even conquered Mount Everest.

Tibetan Leader

Our Tibetan leader, Dorjee, a multiple language (Hindi, Nepalese and English) speaker deserves a big thank you from all of us. Dorjee comes from Lhasa had led hundreds of Mount Kailash pilgrimage for over couple of decades.

He had completed Mount Kailash Kora 166 times. Lumle Holidays is extremely fortunate to have such an experienced member of staff in our team. Without, his efforts, this trip of lifetime would not have been possible.

Lodging

Kathmandu - 4 star hotels, neat and clean comfortable air-conditioned rooms, televisions, en suite bathrooms and swimming pool.

Tibet – Guest houses, 4-bedded or 6-bedded rooms (depending upon the availability). In these dormitories linen is fairly clean, the shared toilets are basic.

Overland transport

We used new Chinese deluxe air-condition coach which were comfortable.

Food

We had buffet style pure vegetarian meal in Kathmandu. The buffet had wide ranges of choices. During our |Tibet trip, we had our own kitchen brigade and our expert Sherpa chefs prepared wide ranges of delicious food for us.

Weather

We travelled in August which was not warm but not too cold.  However, we had to wear warm fleeces at all times. During 3 days walking parikrama, it was cold and we had to wear down jacket too.  Although, we travelled in monsoon season, days were was always sunny and didn’t rain at all.

Grade of the trip

It is a pretty straightforward trip but high altitude can make trip tougher. The difficult day was the first day as we ascended from 1300 meters (from Kathmandu) to 3900 meters (Nyalam) in few hours’ time. Therefore, our itinerary always include 2 nights rest to acclimatise. The entire trip is done by bus until Darchen (Base camp of Mount Kailash) from where we had to 3 days walking parikrama. This 3 days walking parikrama can be done by riding the horse if you cannot walk with an estimate cost of around USD $250. We carried oxygen cylinders to dispense oxygen to guests when required. Overall, trip is not strenuous but also not easy one. Definitely, it’s not the right one if you have asthmatic or heart illnesses.

Trip rate and value for money

The cost of trip was £1300 on full board from Kathmandu – Kathmandu plus flights making around £2000 per person. It was very competitive price in the marketplace. I personally think everyone in the group had a great time and found trip as good value for money.

Corporate Social Responsibility

Throughout our trip in Tibet, we used family-owned guest houses. Most of the members of group had used horses and porters during parikrama and bought souvenirs from small and local Tibetan shops, stalls. Therefore, I would strongly say, our trip contributed a lot to the environment in which we operated and supported the local people.
