Las Delicias offers a selection of ten different tortas —

Steak
Chicken
Ham
Milanesa (sliced breaded steak)
Pork leg
Pastor
Chorizo
Egg
Cheese
Cuban (pork leg, pastor, ham and cheese; this one costs a little more)

— as well as a “combination,” which allows you to pick two toppings. Pork leg, pastor and Cuban are my standbys, but on this day I was struggling to decide. So, I ordered a chorizo and egg torta and nicknamed it “Mexican Breakfast Sandwich.”

At first I was hesitant to order eggs from a menu that includes few egg dishes, but in my many previous experiences at Las Delicias the ingredients have been super-fresh. This was no different. The ground sausage was spicy and the scrambled eggs were just crumbly enough. It was a little messy, but isn’t that the hallmark of a great sandwich?

As always, we started with an order of Las Delicias’ famous made-to-order guacamole and split a bowl of chicken tortilla soup.

#44: Vermicelli with pork, shrimp and eggroll

My fiancé ordered pho ga and I ordered this, the equivalent to my standard order at Pho Vietnam, the #77 (click to compare). The portion may have been a little smaller—but the pork was more tender and as you can see, the mint was fresher. I prefer the atmosphere and the service at Pho Vietnam, but Pho Saigon wins in a head-to-head vermicelli battle.

If you’re ever at a restaurant with me and you see the words “duck confit” on the menu, you can count on me ordering it.

This year I’ve gotten to try some interesting applications, like the duck confit salad at South of Beale and this slow-roasted duck pot pie from café b in Metairie, LA. (Essentially it’s in New Orleans, if you aren’t familiar.) The butternut squash balanced the richness of the sauce and I loved the flaky crust.

café b is a cute casual bistro concept from Ralph Brennan, who is behind Red Fish Grill, Ralph’s on the Park, and several other NOLA restaurants. We went for my cousin’s bridal luncheon; as one can expect from a Brennan family establishment, it was packed. So I would recommend making a reservation. They are kid-friendly, as there were several families in our section.

Revival Southern Food Truck recently started parking in Downtown Memphis. A few weeks ago I had a meeting in the area, so I decided to check out the latest addition to the local food truck scene.

Revival has a variety of sliders, tacos and other Southern fare, and they serve a daily meat-and-two “hot plate” with a roll. When I went, the meat was a chicken and sausage etouffée. Since I arrived later in the afternoon, the only sides available were greens and fries.

The portion was huge and well worth the $7.50. The etouffee was full of meat and the greens were a little sweet and a little vinegary (just how I like them). The fries were crispy and thin-cut.

I also got a Diet Coke for $1.50. I’ve heard the Krispy Kreme bread pudding is delicious but I couldn’t finish my lunch, much less save room for dessert. Service was friendly and efficient.

This is the Memphis po-boy from Soul Fish Café in Memphis. It’s got smoked pork Ioin, BBQ sauce, bacon and slaw. Yes it is as tasty as it appears. I got mac and cheese, but you really can’t go wrong with any of the sides there. Or the Cuban. Or the catfish. Or the wings, which are some of my favorite in town.

There are two locations — the original is in the Cooper-Young neighborhood in Midtown, and there is a newer, bigger one in Germantown at Poplar and Forest Hill Irene. And my house is right smack in the middle: lucky me.
