Picture this, August 2014…

I woke up to messages from people who read my work telling me that they read words they KNOW are mine on a media outlet’s website, but it wasn’t quoted as my words. The writer acted like it was theirs.

I went and checked and surely enough, I was plagiarized. So I spent a few hours DRAGGING the journalist. So much so, I took a nap to recharge. I woke up to an email from that “journalist” saying they didn’t know they weren’t supposed to do that. So I tweeted:

When I tweeted that, I had a LITERAL light bulb moment . I went “OMG I should write that book!!!”

So I started thinking about it on my own. Jotting down ideas. A few months later, I got an email from a book agent who was a fan of my blog, asking to represent me. I signed with that agent Nov 2014. (shoutout to my 1st agent Michael H.)

So I got to working on my book proposal over the holidays and I finished it Jan 2015. After some edits, finally in February 2015, my agent started sending the proposal out to editors.

Issa Rae’s book MISADVENTURES OF AWKWARD BLACK GIRL had JUST come out that month. One of the editors who we met with goes “How is your book different from Issa’s?”

Me: Issa’s my friend and her book is amazing! But they aren’t similar in subject but they’re both funny.” My book was a manual. Issa’s more a memoir.

That particular editor was the editor I REALLY wanted to go with. And in the meeting with her, it was obvious that she hadn’t even read my proposal. I think she met with me more out of nosiness than real curiosity. Me and my agent walked out that meeting and I was like “She can’t have this book even if she wants it.” We agreed. I was really disappointed, doe.

We ended up meeting with about 12 publishers/editors. It was my first go-round in publishing so I was just excited to be in the room.

After all the meetings, my agent hit me up told me that the editors passed on my book b/c they thought my book was too risky, and that since I was just a blogger, I didn’t have a big enough audience. My book was not taken seriously.

But ONE publisher put an offer forward. The advance was lower than I expected, and than my white peers had gotten for their books. But I said YES.

I would use this book to prove folks wrong, use these rejections as a battery. WATCH ME WORK.

So I did.

In May 2015, I signed my first ever book deal in my agent’s office in New York. It was with Henry Holt (MacMillan), for my book I’M JUDGING YOU: The Do-Better Manual.

I called my mom and told her and she said “MacMillan?? They published my college textbooks in Nigeria. That’s A BIG DEAL.”

I was so grateful, b/c of this YES that I was given. I knew my job was to show that it was a smart YES. And that my YES should make room and open doors for others who look like me to get YESSES too.

So I wrote that book in 5 months, across 5 continents, and turned it into my publishers Oct 2015.

I wrote the book I wanted to read: one that would make people laugh, think, and nod vigorously. The theme: we are all a hot mess, and I’m judging how we judge the wrong things: who we love, what we weigh, who we worship. We SHOULD be judging each other on how we are showing up for each other as human beings.

I wanted the book to feel like your favorite group chat in book form.

Anywho, I put that book on my back and promoted my ASS OFF. I tapped on my relationships, tapped in my marketing mind, stepped outside of my comfort zone: this book’s mission was bigger than me. It needed to help publishing see that Black women who aren’t famous can write books that aren’t just about the burden of Blackness. And that we can be profitable. So I said “I have no other choice than to make this SOAR.”

Sep 13, 2016, I’m Judging You dropped into the world! My life changed.

A week later, when the NYT bestselling list was announced, my book was on it! I was at @adcolor when I found out. That same night, I won the ROCKSTAR award there.

BEST. DAY. EVER.

My speaking fees doubled THAT DAY. A month later, I retired my mother cuz I was like “I can pay both your bills and mine. Rest.”

From that point on, my career TOOK OFF.

My book got optioned for TV. Started earning royalties after 3 months. Has sold over 100,000 copies. It led to my 2nd book deal, which was for my banner title PROFESSIONAL TROUBLEMAKER.

4 of my books are NYT bestsellers. I’ve written 5 books (every single one has been a national bestseller). I’m working on books 6 & 7 now. I’m a CAREER AUTHOR.

Now I’m a book coach too, creating The Book Academy to help others find success in publishing.

The lessons are plenty, but here are 3:

“The stone that the builders rejected becomes the cornerstone.”

Don’t worry about the 5 year or 10 year plan: just take the FIRST step and that can open the doors to the rest

Lemme tell y’all the story of how I went on vacation to Mexico and now I need new a dentist. People with trust issues of American healthcare system, this is for you.

Last month, I go to my dentist for my regular cleaning and tests. They tell me I have a huge cavity in the tooth all the way in back of my mouth, and that I need a crown. They also tell me I need a deep cleaning. I have never needed one. I take pretty good care of my teeth and floss after every meal and don’t eat much candy or drink much soda. I don’t smoke and don’t drink alcohol.

But they basically told me I need all this work. I’m like “that’s weird… but ok.”

But first, I go on vacay, cuz I’m on sabbatical and I’m committed to living my best life!

I got very chocolate so talk to me nice!

When I’m on vacation, my travel concierge tells me that Mexico has state of the art dentistry. Tells me to go and try cuz even if I need the deep cleaning, it’d be cheaper.

So the dentist office there PICKS ME UP from my resort (come thru, SERVICE! ). I get there and the place looks fantastic . I register and then they take me to the back. I didn’t tell them anything bout my last dentist appointment. I wanna see what they gon say independently…

First, they take Xrays of my teeth. Their machine? Top notch. It isn’t some random bite on a weird circle thing 15 times.

It is a machine where you bite down once and it swerves across your head for 3 mins and captures xrays with ease and without you being poked in the roof of your mouth by awkwardly placed plastic. I was immediately impressed. Then they had a photographer take actual photos of my bite, my smile, my profile.

And then they took me to the dentist for the test…

Dentist and their dental assistant review all those xrays and the actual pics of my teeth and then they do that test where they check for cavities, buildup, gum disease etc.

Dentist: you have great oral hygiene! No cavities. We will do the regular cleaning and send you on your way.

Me: Wait. You don’t see any cavities?

Dentist: No, your teeth are in great shape.

Me: Are you sure? I was just told I need a crown on my back tooth. I was told it has a big cavity.

Dentist grabs her camera…

She put the little wand with a camera at the back of my mouth by the tooth I was told needed a crown.

She took a picture of the tooth and shows me. She said “see that darker mark? That isn’t a cavity. It is a stain that’s there cuz your teeth has deep grooves. I can get that out with the regular cleaning.”

Me: OK.

And y’all. She does the regular cleaning, takes the pic of the tooth and sure enough, stain is gone.
I’m like BRUHHHHHH. Dentist and assistant are laughing cuz I’m shook.

I asked them AGAIN just to make sure. “So I DON’T need a deep cleaning and a crown??” And they both shake their head. “You have great teeth and hygiene. Keep doing what you’re doing.”

Y’all. Anyways, ALL of that only cost me $180 outta pocket.

But above all, I’m now never going to that Chicago dentist office again.

Cuz y’all were gonna have me get an unnecessary crown AND a painful ass deep cleaning when my joint was fine?!?!

The US is scamming us in so many ways! I hate it for us!

I posted about this on Instagram, Facebook and Threads and there are thousands of comments from people with similar stories of harm done to them by dentists, especially the big chain ones. It seems to me that it is safest to go with private practices and smaller offices, because sounds like the franchising of dentistry has made is profit first, not people first. Like so many things in the United States.

I’m going to be looking for a boutique dentist office in Chicago to be going to moving forward. The one I was going to? Well, they ain’t gotta worry about me stepping foot there again.

Maybe it is to bear witness. To hold the light. To remind people that we are here to design the world we want. To fight for everything good. To tell stories. To create.

We are not powerless. And in fact, this moment of extreme strife feels urgent that we deepen our purpose work. It feels like we cannot afford to say “Later.” 

My matron saint of words, Toni Morrison said it best: 

“This is precisely the time when artists go to work. There is no time for despair, no place for self-pity, no need for silence, no room for fear. We speak, we WRITE, we do language. That is how civilizations heal.“

When artists go to work, civilizations heal. ← If you’re feeling powerless, let that sink in.

This summer, I’m taking a two month sabbatical. The first I’ve ever done. To find REST. To prioritize JOY. But most importantly… TO WRITE.

I’m Nigerian, born and raised. And even though I haven’t lived there since I was nine, the cuisine is still MOST of my diet. I do not go more than 2 days without eating some sort of Naija food. In fact, after 2 days, my rice levels are low and we gotta fix it no matter where in the world I am.

How much do I love Nigerian food? In my first children’s book Little Troublemaker Makes a Mess I have the character of Little Luvvie attempting to cook jollof rice, and turning the kitchen upside down as a result.

Jollof rice is just one of our foods, of course. My other faves are ofada rice (or ayamashe), egusi stew, efo riro (spinach) with pounded yam. Okra and eko. Moin moin or akara. Give me stock fish or shaki (aka tripe) too.
