Premium Economy Class
One good thing came from the GFC… more carriers than ever are offering premium economy cabins on long haul flights.  It cost 10-15% more than economy class but it's definitely money well spent on those 8+ hour flights.  Virgin Atlantic is reputed to have the funkiest option, QANTAS will always be up there with the best and Air New Zealand aren’t too bad either.  The lovely people at Seat Guru will give you all the facts and figures you need.
