Lürssen’s closely guarded Project Cosmos culminates in Nausicaä’s delivery: a 374-foot superyacht that redefines the segment. The vessel reflects the complete design direction of Australian industrial designer Marc Newson, establishing a new benchmark in its class.

Commissioned by Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa, the yacht bears the name Nausicaä, which in Ancient Greek means “burner of ships.” Marc Newson was granted extraordinary creative liberty, enabling him to reimagine the hull and superstructure with fresh perspectives that maximize both deck space and interior accommodation.

A Newson-Designed Masterpiece

The vessel is instantly recognisable as a Newson design, defined by the simplification of complex technical elements into clean, graphic forms, including the four radar spheres above the bridge. It also embodies Newson’s trademark ability to translate conceptual design into a fully functional object, a principle seen throughout his work in watches and car design.

‘It is extremely challenging for a design project, of any description, to literally deliver on the vision conceived and presented at concept stage,’ Newson acknowledges. ‘Here, I am very proud to say that every detail, at every scale, has been realised at the most coherent level. Working with an immensely creative client has enabled rare opportunities to push the boundaries and test the limits of form, material and functionality.’

The Skydome: Engineering and Glass Innovation

Perhaps the most striking feature is the Skydome on the upper deck—a breathtaking glass structure composed of seven massive curved panes. Each panel measures 3 metres by 2.8 metres, is 62 millimetres thick, and weighs a hefty 1,050 kilograms. Anchoring the owner’s office suite, the Skydome is equipped with bespoke bronze shutters that allow the owner to retreat from the world outside, while a private sky terrace extends the experience even further.

Each Skydome pane was hot-bent using gravity under strict process controls. Before manufacturing any production panels, the technique underwent rigorous validation through full-scale 1:1 prototype testing, including multiple bending and lamination trials.

According to Peter Lürssen, CEO of Lürssen, the Nausicaä exemplifies the company’s commitment to glass innovation: “Glass innovation has been a Lürssen hallmark for years. From Rising Sun to Kismet and now Nausicaä, we keep extending the limits of scale and structural complexity to craft spaces that are striking yet practical for our clients. It’s uncommon for a contemporary Lürssen yacht not to set a new standard in glass engineering.”

Interior Design and Art Gallery Concept

The superyacht features a two-level atrium instead of a main saloon. The main deck is an art gallery with custom pieces and a large sculpture, fitting for an owner known for his high-profile collection of works like Jean-Michel Basquiat’s Untitled, which has previously fetched record sums at auction.

A circular upper-deck gallery overlooks the atrium, while the upper aft area includes a sushi bar, table tennis, and inlaid seating. Every detail is custom designed by Marc Newson. Across six decks, the aft section spans 18 metres, with a Jacuzzi and pool for laps and diving.

Sustainable Propulsion and Future Tech

In terms of propulsion, Nausicaä boasts a five-engine diesel-electric plant—comprising two primary and three auxiliary engines—driving fully electric Azimuth pods. The battery plant delivers up to 2MW, sufficient to power all hotel systems simultaneously at peak load, while allowing silent operation and zero local emissions for extended periods. The yard confirmed the completion of her trials in December. At the owner’s request, the yacht features provisions for a fuel-cell system that converts methanol into hydrogen to generate electricity. “While this is an emerging technology in yachting, it is happening. And when it does, its integration will mark a major step away from traditional fossil fuels in large-yacht propulsion,” Lürssen stated.

“The delivery of Nausicaä has given me a profound connection to my great-grandfather, Friedrich Lürssen, who built the world’s first motorboat in 1886,” says Peter Lürssen. “I am incredibly grateful for that. While innovation drives everything we do, Nausicaä has truly broken new ground, just as the 6-metre Rems did 140 years ago.”

The Mythological Origins of the Danaïde

The title Danaïde reaches back to Greek myth. Christie’s notes that the story of the Danaids tells of the fifty daughters of King Danaos, whom his brother Aegyptos demanded as brides for his sons. Obeying their father’s command, the Danaids — all but one — kill their husbands on their wedding night. As punishment, they are banished to Hades and condemned to the futile labor of filling jars from which the water endlessly escapes. In the fourth book of Metamorphoses, Ovid places the Danaids among the “shadows of darkness” and describes how they “constantly fetch water once again, which they will lose” (IV, 463).

Margit Pogány: The Muse Behind the Masterpiece

Conceived and cast around 1913, Danaïde was inspired by a young Hungarian art student, Margit Pogány, whom Brancusi met in Paris in 1910. He distilled her features into a sequence of simplified forms that convey purity and timelessness. For Brancusi, the goal of sculpture was to strip away surface detail and reveal a more essential harmony and beauty. As he put it, “Simplicity is complexity resolved.”

Bearing the inscription and foundry stamp ‘BRANCUSI C. VALSUANI CIRE PERDUE’ on the side of the neck, the bronze—enhanced with gold leaf and a black patina—measures 10 7⁄8 in. (27.1 cm.) in height, not including the base.

At first glance its proportions speak for themselves: at 5.76 metres, Project Nightingale is enormous for a two‑seater. Its look draws on Streamline Moderne — the late Art Deco emphasis on pure, unadorned form — and also references Rolls‑Royce’s experimental “EX” cars of the 1920s. These red‑badged prototypes, among the marque’s rarest and most coveted, directly inspired Nightingale, especially 16EX and 17EX.

The absence of an internal‑combustion engine lets the front remain clean and flat. Complementing that purity, Nightingale adopts thin, vertically aligned headlights at the outermost points of the front face instead of the marque’s typical horizontal lights.

The car’s stance is further elevated by record-breaking 24‑inch rims—the largest ever fitted to a Rolls‑Royce. All four wheels are directional, ensuring the left and right designs perfectly mirror one another, while the rear pair is noticeably broader than the front.

The ‘Starlight Breeze Suite’ Interior

The interior is equally opulent: seats trimmed in pastel Charles Blue leather with Grace White accents and Deep Navy inserts, while the retractable soft top is finished in a light silver.

Without a fixed roof, the traditional Starlight headliner is replaced by the new Starlight Breeze Suite — 10,500 ‘stars’ that run from the door panels behind the seats, wrapping the driver and passenger in a horseshoe of light.

Powered entirely by electricity, Project Nightingale carries an upgraded, heavily modified version of the Spectre’s drivetrain beneath its striking exterior.

A one-of-a-kind 1968 Honda CB750 prototype just shattered records. Last month at Mecum’s Las Vegas auction, this ultra-rare bike sold for $313,500—making it the most expensive Japanese motorcycle ever sold, according to Hagerty. The jaw-dropping price reflects just how significant this early production model is to motorcycle history.

The True Pioneer of the CB750 Legacy

Few motorcycles can claim to be true firsts, but this one can. Built in October 1968, this CB750 Sandcast Prototype was the original CB750 sent to American Honda—used to test the revolutionary 4-cylinder engine and build anticipation for its public debut. It predates the four pre-production samples that arrived for the January 1969 Dealer Convention in Las Vegas, making it the true pioneer of the CB750 legacy.

While the four pre-production samples closely mirrored the production bikes that would follow, this 1968 prototype stands apart as a singular, hand-built masterpiece. Not a single component carries over to those later samples. The design is distinct, the functionality is unique, and even when you compare it to the final production model, the resemblance is only superficial. This is a machine unto itself.

A Restoration That Revealed History

Vic World acquired this motorcycle in the mid-1990s and restored it at World Motorcycles in San Bruno, California. The restoration revealed numerous experimental features that document Honda’s design process.

The side covers are asymmetrical, with a shorter right cover exposing the airbox and an extended left cover concealing it. The valve cover is cast with “HONDA” rather than the later “OHC 750” marking. The sand-cast front brake master cylinder features minimal fluid capacity, a steel line, and an inward slant—evidence of Honda’s early exploration of disc-brake technology for motorcycles.

Unique Engineering: The Rear-Hinged Seat

This prototype is the sole CB750 ever made with a rear-hinged seat that flips up from the front. Beyond this distinctive feature, the vast majority of its components differ from production CB750s. The only notable exception is the handgrips. The engine itself is narrower than production units, beginning with a billet crankshaft—a fundamental difference that extends throughout the powertrain.

The “Unconventional” Carburetor Setup

One of the clearest examples of Honda’s trial-and-error development is the carburetor setup: a set of four one-off, sand-cast Keihin units that bear little resemblance to those on production CB750s. Notably, these prototype Keihins share a single float chamber between every two carburetors.

The carburetors are Honda’s experimental blueprint made visible. Four one-off, sand-cast Keihin units—nothing like what ended up on production CB750s. The kicker: they share float chambers in pairs. It’s unconventional, it’s weird, and it’s exactly what you’d expect from a company still figuring out how to build the perfect four-cylinder motorcycle.

A Record-Breaking Sale

The CB750 sold for a whopping $313,500, making it the priciest Japanese motorcycle ever and one of Honda’s most expensive rides of all time.

A Five-Year Journey to Perfection

The technology behind the Phantom Arabesque is as impressive as the aesthetic. It took Rolls-Royce engineers five years to perfect the laser-etching technique used on the bonnet, a process that is now patented.

The methodology is akin to an artist building a canvas. It begins with a dark base coat followed by protective clear coats, and finally, a lighter top layer. A specialized laser then delicately etches away just 145 microns of that light paint to reveal the darker shade underneath. A final round of hand-sanding brings out the crisp, intricate Mashrabiya pattern.

This technique draws inspiration from Sgraffito, an ancient Italian artistic practice of scratching away surface layers to reveal contrasting colors beneath.

Inside the Phantom Arabesque

Step inside the Phantom Arabesque and the mashrabiya story continues. The geometric pattern flows through carefully selected woods: rich Blackwood and Black Bolivar create visual rhythm across surfaces, while Selby Grey and Black leathers wrap the cabin in sophisticated elegance. But the designers didn’t stop there. The glowing tread plates even mirror that stunning hood engraving in cross-section detail—so every time you step in, it’s a little reminder of the artistry hiding underneath.

The Price of Exclusivity

What’s the true price tag on this artistry? Rolls-Royce isn’t telling. A base Phantom starts at $520,000, but the Arabesque? It’s surely a massive leap—maybe even seven figures. The owner’s name stays secret, but its starring spot in their elite collection says it all about its legendary status.

Tobias Sicheneder, General Manager of the Exterior Surface Centre, highlights the future implications of this technology:

“Laser engraving allows us to create a surface that is both technically precise and visually alive. Developing this patented process required years of experimentation by the entire team. The Proprietary White Ceramic Case

A standout feature of this release is the proprietary white ceramic case. Measuring 43 mm in diameter, 51.73 mm in length, and 14.55 mm thick, it’s crafted from a composite ceramic reinforced with glass and carbon fibers in a polymer matrix—making it far more shatter-resistant than traditional ceramics.

Engine and Movement

The black DLC-coated titanium caseback offers a view of the full aluminum rotor, adorned with sun-inspired rays and circles that symbolize the Sun powering the UR-12.02.

At the heart of the UR‑100V LS Ceramic is the UR 12.02 automatic calibre: a Windfänger air‑resistance system governs winding to curb excessive input, and twin barrels supply a 48‑hour reserve as the movement beats at 28,800 vph.

A 1980 BMW M1, previously owned by three-time Formula 1 champion Niki Lauda, will be offered at Mecum’s Kissimmee auction in January 2026 and could sell for almost $700K. With styling by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the M1 is BMW’s one true mid-engine supercar and the debut bearer of M badges.

What makes this vehicle exceptional is its origin story. Lauda didn’t purchase this M1; BMW awarded it to him for taking the 1979 M1 Procar crown. The single-make series matched F1 drivers in identical mid-engine racers and delivered frantic racing. While the track versions became canvases for legends like the famous BMW M1 Art Car by Andy Warhol, Lauda dominated the series through steady speed. Despite retiring in three of eight events, he won the championship, claiming this specific road car as his prize.
