I have the best conversations with my friends. We really need a reality show or something. Of course, fashion is one of the topics we discuss most frequently. One of my conversations with my good friend, Tes, went something like this:

Me: So, I drank too much last night at the event and fell on my ass – but not necessarily in that order…

Tes: How the hell did you manage to fall? You mean to tell me you really fell? Like, hit the ground?

Me. Yep! This guy was flirting with me at the bar; he said something witty; and I threw my head back to laugh and landed on my bottom! It hurts like a mother!

Tes: You had on those damn shoes, didn’t you? I thought I told you to get rid of those!

Me: But they’re PRADA!!!

Yes. My friends and I are beautiful and brilliant…but every now and then; we’re shallow! This is one of my shallow moments. These shoes are fabulous. And they’re Prada! And I cannot walk in them. At all! I have learned that I can only wear them if I’m walking very short distances and I have to walk very slowly and carefully; and if I’m spending all – not most but all – of the event in a seat!

Still, I refuse to get rid of them – because they’re PRADA!!! And they’re quirky. And I love them!

So, of course, Tes posts this on my Facebook wall the next day...

So, if I’m out and about with these shoes on and you see me walking very carefully and leaning and sitting and definitely NOT dancing; just do me a favor, friends…

Gap Kids Ad

So, let’s talk about this girl power Gap ad that some people have their panties up in a bunch about.

Dear butthurt people: HAVE A DAMN SEAT, ALREADY! Everything is NOT racist! I saw the ad before I read about all of the drama. I loved it then and still love it now! I think it is adorable. I did notice the adorable Black girl and I noticed that she was quiet, but that’s because she’s the smallest girl in the ad! That’s what little girls do when they’re hanging out with big girls – they hang around quietly, watch with admiration, and think, “I can’t wait until I’m old enough/big enough/ strong enough to do that!” I know that’s what I did when I was a little girl!

Here is where I cackled and chortled: Business Insider published an article today that the two girls are SISTERS! Come on! That’s what big sisters do! Little squirts are always the armrest! Always!

As a Black girl (who rocks, by the way), I know all too well that racism and sexism still exist, which is why we need programs that encourage and empower Black People. And Women. And especially Black Women. As a Black women, I was not offended by this ad at all. I thought it was super cute and was happy to see all of the girls being strong and pretty and smart because it is possible to have it all!

Dear Gap + Ellen DeGeneres: You’re awesome, that ad is amazing, the critics are being just plain dumb! Thank you for celebrating girl power in such a great way!

China: Through the Looking Glass - Met Gala 2015

What better time to jump back into the fabulous world of fashion than to talk about the Met Gala? As I’m sure you know, the Met Gala is a costume ball with a theme, so it is always amusing to me when people criticize the people who dress according to the theme on the red carpet. That’s the whole point of a costume ball with a theme!

Since the theme was centered around China, red is the obvious and safe choice; then there was plenty of pretty red dresses on the carpet. I, however, want to point out and give my best dressed accolades to those who went all out and took the theme seriously!

Lots of red and dragons were expected for this red carpet, but guess who nailed it without going the safe route! Are you surprised – I’m not surprised one bit! Big Bird memes be damned! Rihanna (and that dress) made the theme come alive! The memes and other photos poking fun at her dress were funny, though!

Next in my “Nailed it” category is Red Carpet Queen Sarah Jessica Parker! Twitter is really giving her a hard time about her headdress, but it is absolutely in keeping with the theme of the evening. It’s not like she wore the thing to the Oscars Red Carpet! Yes, I said, “that thing” because it is a LOT and she is definitely “doing the most” but that is what you’re supposed to do at the Met Gala! The memes and photos poking fun at her were hilarious, too! That’s OK, SJP, you owned that carpet as usual!

Those were my two favorite outfits. Here are some others! I may reserve commentary to keep from throwing any unnecessary shade! I do not want my return from hiatus to be snarky!

Katy Perry got into the spirit of the evening’s theme in Moschino.

I would love to see a photo of the back of this dress, but as always, Solange does “out of the box” with great taste!

Kendall Jenner was super cute in Calvin Klein – I would totally wear that dress! I’d wear that one on the photo bomber, too! Who is that?

There were many other really cute dresses on the red carpet last night – some were great costumes and others just great dresses. Overall, most of the attendees looked awesome on the Red Carpet. I really liked Madonna, Lady Gaga, Kerry Washington, and Cher, to name a few. The ones that made my lyst, however, are the ones I kept going back to view several times. I still can’t stop looking at this Calvin Klein on Kendall! I think it’s my favorite non-costume ensemble.

Golden Globes Gems

Guess who got caught up in a Netflix binge and missed the Globes? I didn't even catch the red carpet! So, for the last few days, my “FOMO” has kicked in completely and I have been all over the internet looking at dresses…and judging!

Simple and elegant are always my favorite looks. You have to wear the clothes, not the other way around, especially when it comes to evening wear. Here are some of the stars that looked good at the Globes.

I am always happy to see this lady on a red carpet! I am a bit biased when it comes to Jen because she is my friend in my head. She kept it simple and sexy and she looked great in Saint Laurent! Good job, my friend in my head! :)

Julianne Moore is all sparkly and cute in Givenchy Haute Couture. I love the sparkle and like that the dress plays with the fringe trend from fall. This is a great example of including a trend into a classic silhouette!

Prada really should do more gowns. Ruth Wilson looked really pretty in this modern classic. I love the clean lines in this dress and the seams in Prada pieces are always impeccable.

Tiny Fey, in Antonio Berardi,and Amy Poehler, in Stella McCartney

This dress Amy Poehler is wearing on stage should have been her red carpet dress. I made this same comment about one of her looks last year, too. Hey, Amy! I’m available to dress you! I guarantee, you’ll kill it on the red carpet if I do! She should have hit that carpet in this piece and just stood there for a good 10 minutes with her hands on her hips like Wonder Woman! That’s what I would have done, anyway!

I love that these funny ladies are also just that – ladies, and they look incredible all the time.

Pants are a risk, but Lorde made it work in Narciso Rodriguez! She is super cute and Royals is still one of my favorite songs!

I’m just going to go on and say it! These young girls are having a hard time nowadays because women all over (not just celebrities) are aging fantastically! Just about everybody on my dressed list is over 40 and I did not do that on purpose!

Dame Helen is gorgeous in Dolce and Gabbana! I just love her!

Lena got it right this time in Zac Posen! That’s all…

Another funny lady who always nails it on the red carpet is Julia Louis-Dreyfus. She looked white hot in a custom Narciso Rodriguez.

Katie Holmes looked beautiful in a custom Marchesa gown in my favorite color!

Quvenzhané Wallis steals the show in custom Giorgio Armani. I have heard good things about Annie and can’t wait to see it! One of my friends keeps calling it “Black Annie” like there’s another version currently out there in theaters or something.

Christine Baranski was gorgeous in Zac Posen.

It should come as no surprise that window shopping is one of my favorite things to do. I enjoy looking at the stories merchandisers and artists create – especially in Manhattan (think, Louis Vuitton, Spring 2009). The one boutique that never disappoints and is always breathtaking with just one dress is none other than Oscar de la Renta. His beautiful dresses are evidence of his love and appreciation of the female form. Senor de la Renta was a global treasure and will be greatly missed. Thankfully, we will always have the dresses; the glorious and stunning works of art.

As I browsed the web and read the tributes from the major media outlets, I was intrigued by how quickly writers and editors could pick their favorite pieces or his “best creations”. I mean, I don’t think I have ever seen an Oscar de la Renta dress that I did not like. I don’t think I could ever pick a favorite or even a collection of favorites. Thank you, Mr. de la Renta, for loving women and making us look and feel beautiful. Rest well!

It’s been too long since I've posted! What better way to come back than to dish about the Emmys Red Carpet! It is always a highlight for me to look at the beautiful dresses on the carpet during the glamorous award shows and this year’s carpet did not disappoint. Once again, my best dressed picks are proof of my theory that less is definitely more. When you are putting together your ensembles for any occasion, you want to be wearing your clothes, not the other way around! The great Coco Chanel reminds us, “Dress shabbily and they remember the dress, dress impeccably, and they remember the woman”. Plenty of ladies got it right on the Red Carpet. Below are a few of my favorites from the night. I had lots of favorite looks. Narrowing it down was hard!

I saw her doing an interview and she mentioned that stylists and designers in Hollywood don’t want to dress her because she won’t wear a dress without sleeves. I wish she would hire me! I would gladly welcome the challenge! I love a great strapless or halter ball gown, but there is also nothing wrong with a pretty gown that covers a girl’s arms – especially when you have to attend formal events when it’s cold or if you, like Dr. Mayim, simply don’t wish to bare much skin. Good for you for staying true to yourself. I was inspired by your words!

Lanvin: 125 years of French Perfection

I have a friend who recently discovered and fell in love with the fashion house, Lanvin. Naturally, she reached out to me because I am probably the only friend she has that would get as excited as she was about fashion! When she asked about the label, she said that the clothes completely captured her essence. I told her that since Lanvin is 125 years of French perfection, it made perfect sense that she would feel such a strong connection.

Created in 1889, Jeanne Lanvin started her fashion dynasty by creating hats which quickly became popular with the most fabulous Parisians of that time. From there, Madame Lanvin began designing children’s clothing as a result of the birth of her daughter, Marguerite. She then got into costume designing – first for adult productions and later for children. It wasn’t until 1909 that the Lanvin house branched out into couture for ladies; the evolution for her business was in direct correlation with the growth states of Marguerite. Later, the line expanded to bridal, lingerie, men’s clothing, and home décor. The story is beautifully told on a timeline that can be found here.

The inside of Jeanne Lanvin’s office which has been preserved. In celebration of the 125 year milestone, Lanvin has shared photographs of the office on their Twitter and Instagram accounts. There is also a great article about the office on the Harpers’ Bazaar website.

Lanvin also has one of the season’s “it” bags. It is their “paper bag” made of lambskin. Who else but a French design house can make a paper bag chic and have everyone coveting and buzzing about it?

Are Leggings Pants?

This may seem a bit like a rant but it’s not! I have just been pondering this for a really long time!

I have been observing the legging trend for quite some time and I have been working on an opinion about them that is fair and objective. I love wearing them because they are super comfortable. However, I am also really irritated when I see them out in public on some people. I have also gotten great laughs at the expense of my friends on Facebook when they encounter someone wearing leggings in public and looking completely inappropriate because they have complete melt downs which I totally understand! (This has happened lots of times by several different friends!)

So the million dollar question is, are leggings pants? I say yes – and no…

There are several conditions that must be met for a girl to wear leggings and not look trashy – and there is a razor thin line! The first condition that you have to consider is your body shape. Yes, you should be confident and proud of the body God gave you whether you choose to take care of it or not (another post, another time…) . However, if you are overweight (or frighteningly underweight), leggings are not for you! Just because they are sold in your size does not mean it’s appropriate for you to buy and wear so just get over it and buy the cheap ones to wear as you lounge around the house.

This brings me to my next condition to wear leggings in public as pants…

If you spent less than $50 on a pair of leggings, they are NOT pants, they are underwear or pajamas and nobody wants to see that in public! The safest bets for leggings as pants are leather or faux leather and skinny jeans (it looks like legging jeans have been dropped from the market). There are, however, some lycra/cotton blends that you can make work as well but they cost more than $50 and the material is thick – really thick! No lady should want strangers to be able to see her booty through thin fabric– not a good look!

Finally, solid black and denim are the only colors where this works. Although, I will admit, I have seen some people out in a good, thick, well-made pair of print leggings or leggings in other colors and it worked but it is a huge risk (as I sit here writing in a pair of camo leggings, but hey! I’m in the privacy of my own home and not going anywhere!)

So! Will I wear leggings outside of my home as pants? Absolutely! I love the leather and faux leather leggings and I also like to do the legging jeans in the winter. They are a great complement to my Uggs! Below are my two favorites I found while cyber shopping today…

It was great to see the men at the Oscars thinking outside of the box with their tuxedos the other day. It got me thinking that more attention should be paid to men’s fashions. Most of the time some people say men are easy or maybe even boring to dress, but there are lots of easy, cool, and creative things that guys can do to change up their look and those who do it all of the time are great at it. The most important aspect of an impeccably dressed man is a good tailor so those suits, shirts, and separates fit perfectly along with a subtle mix of suit colors – black is not the only color for a suit! Branch out with brown, navy, gray, or even try taking a risk with a deep merlot or emerald color (but maybe just for a tuxedo on a special occasion). Smart accessorizing is also important to give the look that extra touch of polish. Since we all have spring fever right now, let’s talk about travel (preferably somewhere warm and sunny)!

So, you've got your guy a great travel outfit; complete with great shoes which are the most important part of a man’s ensemble. The next important thing for travel is a great carry on bag. I love watching the fashion at the Oscars because everyone is so elegant and glamorous. Everyone is wearing beautifully constructed formal wear and it’s just a lovely, polished evening. That being said, I had no stand out favorites. I am just really happy that all of the ladies looked really pretty on their special night. There were plenty of beautiful black and neutral gowns – always a safe way to go. You can also never go wrong with some bling and there was plenty of that on the red carpet. Also, the trend of bright colors that I believe has been started by the amazing Lupita Nyongo’o was evident and everyone who wore color wore it well. Even the men on the red carpet played with color and didn’t just stick to the traditional black. There was Dallas Buyers’ Club starts and winners Matthew McConaughey (alright, alright, alright!) and Jared Leto rocking the white dinner jackets; Michael Strahan looked great in a merlot colored tuxedo; and there was also some navy blue hued suits – way to think outside of the box, fellas!

So! What does a girl wear when she’s being admitted into an insane asylum? Dsquared2 of course! That is, if she wants to be the hottest chick in the psych ward, apparently! The collection was shown with a “Girl, Interrupted” theme complete with immaculately dressed attendants to make sure the mad mavens behaved even though a few patients did go off of the deep end – they “escaped” by walking off of the runway. The line was mostly 60’s chic, with uber short skirts; delightfully luxurious textiles; and that funky Dsquared2 style that I have come to adore. The pieces were fun, girly, and edgy all at once. Gucci went retro with a cool, 60’s vibe and I loved it – and not just because I had an almost religious experience at the Gucci Museum in Florence just a few weeks ago! I like the very simple looks and the breezy, cool, pastel color palette that was used to ease us into the fall season. That is just probably just what we will need after all of the polar vortex business this year - we are going to want summer to last as long as possible! See the full collection at style.com.

London Fashion Week

I have had a hard time finding things to rave about on last week’s London runways. The British; although I adore their accents - have always stricken me as odd in just about every other way. I guess this also holds true for the British fashion scene for me! There were a few collections I checked out and below, a summary of my favorites.

Temperley London showed a couple of cute maxi dresses that I liked, because I'll always be a sucker for a maxi dress!

I was excited about Topshop because I really like the things I’ve seen since they started selling pieces in Nordstrom in the states so I looked through their collection about three times. They seemed to be aiming for “effortlessly chic” this is what I kind of liked…

So! Yep! That’s all I’ve got! Better luck in September, London!

When fashion and music intersect, I am in my own personal heaven. Sometimes, I learn about great new bands like St. Vincent at the DVF show and then sometimes a legendary music artist collides with a legendary fashion artist and it’s so much fun to see for me. That being said, I am a huge hip hop fan because hip hop is the soundtrack to my adolescent years! When Jay Z released “Magna Carta, Holy Grail” back in the summer and I first heard “Tom Ford”, I first had to make myself stop walking around saying, “I don’t pop molly, I rock Tom Ford” because that’s a little bit inappropriate in the regular world. Then, I immediately wondered in my head if and how Tom Ford would incorporate the song in his next collection. I was not disappointed! On the runway was a blinged out dress interpretation of the shirt Jay Z has worn in his concerts. What a super cool shout out to Jay Z! If I were a teenager, I would totally sell my soul to get one or make my own knock off! Jay Z’s shirt can be acquired for about $65, Tom Ford’s “knock off” will set you back about $6500!

Encircled around the Jay Z hype was also a fantastic runway collection. With pieces done in mostly black, white, and brown, the Tom Ford show was sleek and sexy with a nod the ‘60’s and the celebration of beautiful simplicity. The girl is wearing the clothes – just as she should. See the whole collection here.

Burberry Prorsum

Prints! New, fresh prints with a hand painted Native American flare are what were presented on the Burberry Prorsum runway in London. While the scarves, trench coats, and signature plaid were present; they were accompanied by big, bold prints in warm, fall hues. The looks were mash ups of uncoordinated prints that were intriguing and pleasing to the eye. The collection overall was a pleasant and unexpected surprise. It was fun, flirty, and definitely a trend that will be recreated in street style this fall.

Ethereal, delicate, graceful, exquisite, elegant…

These are the words that describe the Ralph Lauren Fall 2014 Ready to Wear collection. In a sharp contrast to the fun, youthful, daytime looks in the Polo collection shown right before this one, all of these pieces were done using soft, monochrome palettes in shades of pink, white and grey and are grown up attire perfect for glamorous evening events or a really lavish, elegant lunch rendezvous . It was a beautiful and relaxing collection to view with its gorgeous coats and dramatic capes all softened and yet made more dramatic by the heavenly hues chosen for the garments.

There was quite a bit of fur flying (I’m hoping it is faux because I would totally wear it if I could) along with some ruffles to complement the luxurious textiles giving an angelic flow of the skirts and capes. I was once asked who I would choose if I had to pick just one designer to wear for the rest of my life. Without hesitation, I said Ralph Lauren because he covers everything – casual, business, sport, evening, and even underwear. He is also one of my favorite designers and I thought I knew everything about him!

Well! Ralph Lauren showed two collections in one show. For the first time, he showed a Polo collection for women. I could not believe that he had never done this but as I went through my closet looking for Ralph Lauren pieces that said Polo, I don’t have any. They all say Ralph Lauren, Ralph Lauren Black, even Rugby but no Polo - not even my Olympic and Pink Pony t-shirts. Then, I went to the website and pulled up the women’s Polo shirts since I don’t own any– they are Ralph Lauren Blue Label! I cannot believe I never knew this but you learn something new every day and I found this piece of fashion trivia completely fascinating!

The collection was youthful and sporty. Some looks had a black base with the occasional splash of color; while others had the RL countryside vibe. Pamella Roland landed on my radar the night of the Grammys when Miranda Lambert wore a sexy red number by the designer and I am so glad she did. There was not one piece in her show that I did not absolutely love! Pamella Roland has been doing shows that have been on style.com since Spring 2013 – I will definitely be exploring those previous collections later. This collection is glitzy; full of sequins, metallics, beads, and more sequins. It is my personal opinion that there is no such thing as too much bling so the sparkly goodness was right up my alley! The use of glitz was tastefully done, though, so for you boring, stuffy folks who don’t like lots of sparkle, there’s something here for you to love, too. This presentation was done in a palette of black with shades of grey (I think the designers are getting ready for that movie coming out soon!), with some blue undertones and the occasional pop of deep red; one fantastic ombre gown in orange; and another ombre gown in purple. There were also very small appearances of gold and flesh tones.
