Welcome Terrain 6 listeners!

Ehrler Vogel, like The Lights Galaxia, is my personal project.  When I created Luxus-Arctica records I wanted to curate a collection of incredible aural artwork that I knew existed in the Creative Commons realm of the Internet.  My work acts as a translator of where my aural tendencies lie which are hopefully reflected as well in the collection on this label.  As a student I have long periods of inactivity on this label – but, as I move forward with my last year of college at Eastern Washington University (Visual Communication Design & Public History), I hope to continue developing sonic constructs and bring more work from great artists in the far corners of the world.

The Ehrler Vogel project itself is based on field recordings and interpretations of landscapes.  This release includes 6 pieces from the collection titled “In the North Atlantic”.  In addition to these audio pieces, I also have a visual piece featured entitled “Charlemagne Sees the Cross” at Terrain 6 (as Joseph Snodgrass).

I am open to new artist submissions currently for release on LUXX.  Our catalogue serves as a good example of what we are looking for – but additionally, I’m interested in field recording and some experimental ambient music as well.  Please see our Submit page if this is something you’re interested in.

Whether it’s called “Associative Transcoding”, sampling, field recording, noise, art, … whatever it may be, it provides an honest and real viewpoint to our world.  No, it doesn’t give you the exact words describing your failed love life or even give you guidance for your future (Bon Jovi superfans make me sick).  But it presents a unique vantage as one man’s vision to how our world really works.

Terrestrial Locomotion is in concept “to use the earthbound movement of animals to derive rhythms from and to serve as a source of inspiration what each individual song may be about.”  It’s a clear statement on the connection of man to the other living, moving things on the Earth.  How do we interpret ourselves according to the Earth and all it’s other beings?  It’s entirely possible that the final piece on the album has changed my view of centipedes altogether (from incredibly creepy to an awe of their beautiful movement).  That’s not a joke.  And how similar we are, how psychologically tied we are to our animal being; to our kindred and the species we once were.

I would like to announce that we intend on doing a release in the next month and also a sort-of re-release.  The latter will be the Lights Galaxia album “Another Infinite City” (showing here) which currently is being sold on GoGoYoKo.com (for a very limited time).  It is my intention to re-release this album for free or pay-as-you-like at some point in the not-too-distant future.

The other album, which is much more important, is a release by Visuelle Musik, who previously released the album “Solmis’olre Domir’emi” under the Luxx label.  Mathias Bruessel (of Visuelle Musik) actually completed the album over a year ago and held steadfast to wanting to release it on Luxus-Arctica.  For this we thank him and are honored.  Having listened to it a lot, I can guarantee it is an excellent album and is readily identifiable, fitting very well with the sounds of the first release.  So this is just a brief update on the status of things – stay tuned…

The root vision of this was seen in the photography of Jourdan Laik.  While Laik’s own series of studies such as “Wildlife Analysis”, “Experiments in Light”, or his “Fall Excursion” pieces deal specifically with the natural world, they offer an incredibly human aspect of nature which really brings us close to our natural foundations – the subconscious elements which bond us to the Earth.  Interestingly enough, he says, “I prefer to not feature people in landscapes as they tend to become the focal point of the image.  In ambient music, the listener develops a sort of static vision which allows them to, not necessarily see, but be aware of all the elements at once – in essence making themselves part of the music.  This is what I hope to accomplish in my photographic studies.”  It’s because of this that Laik is our primary photographer for album art.  He continues to offer excellent variety and a beautiful vision of the LUXX catalogue, and we look forward to more work by him.

We hope to imbue a mindset of thinking of music in a new way. This is something we think we’ve done in the past, but we’d like to specifically focus on an embracing of real open mindedness, altruism, acceptance of the unknown, readiness to learn and assimilate, and to be filled by the unfathomable openness of the frontier and in doing so becoming a transient in a new found home (able to come and go at will).

In connection with the Luxx Long Now ideals, this is simply a breath of fresh air in understanding and taking in the endless panorama, as it were. A future with no end. A realization that the best thing mankind can do is better themselves. The first step is becoming interconnected with each other and the land.

On a side note: we’re very sad to inform you (if you don’t already know) that Lounging Sound radio soon will not be in existence after the coming months.  LS radio has always provided the most choice of ambient, electronic, new age, and psytransce music.  I started work on the station in ~2003 and my friend Jourdan Laik maintained it designed it in it’s current form, and really was the lifeblood of it for the last 4 or 5 years.  Thank you Jourdan and LS.com will be sorely missed.
