The Arctic region is experiencing a rapid increase in temperature, with rapidly reduced summer sea ice and melting permafrost. Understanding current Arctic change is important so that policymakers are well informed of its significance and Arctic communities are prepared to mitigate and adapt to its impacts.

Aim

The aim of this programme is to understand the impacts that increased temperature will have on the Arctic and the on rest of the planet.

Storm Risk

Storms have had an increasing social and economic cost over recent years and are likely to be a main cause of loss of life and assets in the UK over the next few decades. With climate change, the costs of storm impacts are likely to increase. This has highlighted the need to improve forecasting of storms.

There is a need for better weather and climate prediction. Technical developments in computing and in global-scale observations mean there are enormous opportunities for improving weather and climate prediction, but there are currently major scientific and technical barriers.

Agricultural Greenhouse Gas Inventory

What is the research about?

Gasses such as methane and nitrous oxide are an important factor in climate change (alongside carbon dioxide release). Agriculture contributes about 8% of greenhouse gas emissions in the form of methane (from livestock and their manures) and nitrous oxide (released from soil and manure management).

The Agricultural Greenhouse Gas Inventory is a joint initiative from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Scottish Government, Northern Ireland Executive and Welsh Assembly Government.
