In their second year, the Creating Entrepreneurial Communities Awards were presented by the Where Development Begins Co-op (comprised of DeWitt Township, the City of DeWitt, Bath Township and Watertown Township) in five categories: Contributing to the Community; Entrepreneurial Spirit; Benefiting the Community; Food Systems and Community Excellence.

"Granger is honored to be recognized with this award," said Granger CEO Keith Granger. "We strive to be a dedicated community partner by giving back to the regions we serve."

Rod Taylor, DeWitt Township Manager said Granger was an easy choice for the Co-op. "Many businesses are here, but there are certain businesses that decide to go above and beyond ... Granger is obviously a big supporter of not only the DeWitt Community, but communities all over the region," he added.

Though Granger gives back in many ways, two major areas of contribution include the 75-acre Granger Meadows Park and the annual Granger Meadows Celebration.

The park includes the tallest sledding hill in the Lansing area and lighted walking trails. Granger has also contributed 50 percent of the funds needed to produce the Celebration event since its inception eight years ago.

"Granger, not only provides financial support (for that event), but staff resources," added Taylor.

Township Supervisor Rick Galardi could not agree more. "Every time there's something needed in this township, I can't remember these people saying 'no,'" he said. "Granger is the cream of the crop."

Granger is a third generation, family-owned and operated business based in Lansing, Mich. Through innovation and planned growth, Granger has evolved into a leading comprehensive environmental management firm responsible for the recovery of resources through recycling, composting and landfill gas-to-energy programs. Associates from Lansing-based Granger educated the Lansing community and students from Lansing Post Oak Magnet School at their Wood Road Generating Station, Tuesday, March 13, with a delicious demonstration about that very question.

Using "Layered Landfill Sundaes," Granger associates illustrated how landfills function and how their landfill gas-toenergy programs use everyday trash to power homes, schools and businesses in our community. The company also staged a press conference to unveil the new brand and tagline "Collecting Tomorrow's Energy."

"We wanted to do something educational and fun," said CEO Keith Granger. "This is an opportunity for us to help our current and future customers understand who Granger is and what Granger does. We provide many services, and this exercise - like our new brand - helps explain that process."

Granger provides environmentally friendly options for waste removal and disposal, energy services, landfill management, recycling and composting. The new brand reflects a unity between all of these important services. Granger's Lansing site is just one of its many landfill gas-to-energy programs in communities across the nation, so a brand revamp was necessary to provide cohesiveness, while also aiding in the company's expansion.

"Our new look says so much," said Granger. "It really helps convey what we do at Granger, and we're excited to share that with the communities we service."

Thanks to generous party sponsors and attendants, the funds to construct a large mural to be placed on the parking structure were raised at last year's first ever CAWLM '80s Flashback Fundraiser. The money was raised by Capital Area Women's LifeStyle Magazine (CAWLM), published by Motion Marketing & Media.

A check presentation will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 8 at the Black Child and Family Institute (BCFI), 835 W. Genessee St. in Lansing, in front of their mural to commemorate the funds raised and to launch the start of the mural project. (The event will be held inside in case of inclement weather). The money directly benefits the Westside Commercial Association (WCA)'s Youth Mural Arts Program, which will help make this mural a reality. Sparrow Hospital will contribute the mounting cost of the mural.

Made up of 80-square-foot panels, the mural will cover the portion of the St. Lawrence Campus parking structure that faces West Saginaw Street.

Westside Commercial Association presented $3,900 check from CAWLM Funds courtesy of last year's '80s Flashback Fundraiser Capital Area Women's LifeStyle Magazine Jen Loforese of One Love Global (OLG) and the Peace and Prosperity Youth Action Movement will head the design of the mural. Interns with Peace and Prosperity - comprised of high school students in Ingham County - are excited to get working with Jen on possible artwork ideas. Students from REACH Studio Art Center in REO Town will also be contributing. The funds provide for the first two panels of the mural. Additional panels can be added as funds are raised by various organizations in the community.

Attending the check presentation will be members of the WCA, along with members of OLG and interns and ambassadors with Peace and Prosperity. Community members, business owners and CAWLM staff - including the magazine's publisher Tiffany Dowling - will also be present. The non-profit organization Keep Learning will cover the event for their educational show, LRN101.

The second annual CAWLM '80s Flashback Fundraiser is set for Saturday, March 24. This year the event will be held at the University Club, 3435 Forest Road, Lansing, with all proceeds going to REACH Studio Art Center. Tickets can be purchased at www.cawlm.com.

That might be a good thing for the organizers of the first ever Rock the World obstacle race and music festival held at Fitzgerald Park in Grand Ledge, Mich. On June 30, beginning at 7 p.m. after a day of obstacle racing and live music, Rock the World will attempt to break the Guinness World Record™ for the longest distance traveled on a slip and slide in one hour.

The current record is held by the University of Oregon in Eugene, Ore. Using a 30-foot-long slip and slide, the world record was set at 82,080 feet on October 8, 2010. In order to beat this record, Rock the World will need more than 430 consecutive sliders to traverse their 190-foot-long slip and slide in just one hour.

"We want to make a world impact with this race," said Matt Dykstra, co-founder of Rock the World Race. "What better way to do that than setting a world record?"

Participation in the slip and slide challenge will be free of charge and open to anyone who wants to help break the
record. "I think we can do it," continued Dykstra. "It's going to be a fun way to wrap-up the day. With live music, food, beverages, charity and now a Guinness World Record™ attempt, this is one race people won't want to miss."

Rock the World is a family-friendly 3.1 mile (5K) trail course laced with at least 12 different obstacles and plenty of mud, dirt and hills to satisfy even intense athletes. Category During #MeetMichigan, the Motion Marketing & Media Special PRops (short for special PR opportunities) team used social media - Facebook, Twitter and Blogging - from all 83 counties in Michigan in two weeks. The idea was to show how the idea of "local" is changing, spread positivity for the state and showcase the power of social media for businesses great and small. As a result, @m3_group climbed from a global ranking of No. 16 million on Twitter's Follow Friday (#FF) to No. 10,000 - and a national ranking of 832 - in just two weeks.

Grand Rapids LipDub Nominated: "Best Use of Video in Social Media" Category Newsweek listed Grand Rapids, Mich. as a dying city. The city responded with a 10-minute music video featuring 5,000 people set to the Don McLean classic "American Pie." The intent of this video was to refute that claim and show why someone would want to visit Grand Rapids. Status Creative created and produced what Roger Ebert called "the greatest music video ever made" in one continuous take. They then used their social media formula to generate 4.5 million views on YouTube.
