Currently we have found the donations of food dwindling and we appeal for anyone who has spare, or is in a position to donate, to drop tins off at the Sanctuary premises.

Jonathan has Cystic Fibrosis, Osteoporosis, and Diabetes and has dedicated his life to his voluntary work with animals at the Mid-Antrim Animal Sanctuary. Not only is he the proud owner of four rescue dogs, but also shoulders the responsibility of over twenty Sanctuary Residents through his devotion to helping the homeless. As the Long-Term Sponsorship Secretary Jonathan writes to sponsors individually with stories, photographs and updates from their beneficiary.

Jonathan’s condition left him unable to leave his home – his dependency on oxygen meant he could no longer travel outside the perimeter of his oxygen cylinder equipment. As such we, at the Mid-Antrim Animal Sanctuary, are so grateful for your contribution which has allowed us to purchase a portable oxygen concentrator. Your help has been invaluable and for that we cannot thank you enough.

Jonathan and his mum Diane arrive in style

‘Friends of Jonathan’ had the privilege of holding a Fundraising Evening in The Ramble Inn on Friday the 25th of June; featuring live music (Billy Finlay), a fabulous dj set with all Jonathan’s favourite tunes (T2 Disco), limousine rides (courtesy of AW Law Limousines) and fantastic ballot prizes (thanks to friends and family, and the generosity of the public). Particular attention must go to our friends at Favour Pet Foods and Clinivet Veterinary Nutrition, for going above and beyond the call of duty by supplying a delicious buffet for over twice the number in attendance as originally agreed. The cost more than doubled due to the level of interest in the event and, to this extent, we owe this business in Randalstown a huge plaudit.

The event was an inspirational success, yielding over two thousand pounds – leaving the final target within our grasp. We are honoured to thank all the contributors as they afforded Jonathan the opportunity to attend his function, only with the aid of the portable oxygen concentrator, and for that we are indebted to you all. Thank you for changing this young man’s life.

Finally we must make special acknowledgement for an amazing young woman who ran 10K of the Scottish Woman’s’ Marathon, raising a phenomenal £765.00. Valerie McKenna (pictured), for her extraordinary single-handed achievement (and for the support of your aforementioned accomplices); the residents of the Mid-Antrim Animal Sanctuary are the real winners. For that we thank you, on their behalf.

We are finding, at this present time, that a lot of people can no longer afford to feed and keep their pets – never mind pay a veterinary bill which was likely to exceed their upkeep alone.

In the situation whereby an owner cannot afford treatment for their pet there are organisations to help. With Pounds and Sanctuaries reaching their limits with regards to space as well as finance, we ask that if you have a talent or trade to offer, no matter how insignificant you feel it is, we could certainly use your input. Giving up your time can be of the utmost importance during a period when disposable income and donations are on the wane.

There’s nothing more fulfilling than the act of giving.
