Although it distanced itself from the idea on Wednesday, Microsoft’s earlier willingness to discuss the anti-Google plan with News Corp, and also to make similar proposals to other online publishers, highlights the urgency of its efforts to gain a stronger foothold in search.

That is 100,000 opportunities a minute to win loyal readers and generate revenue—for free. In terms of copyright, another bone of contention, we only show a headline and a couple of lines from each story. If readers want to read on they have to click through to the newspaper's Web site. (The exception are stories we host through a licensing agreement with news services.) And if they wish, publishers can remove their content from our search index, or from Google News.

Il discorso di Barack Obama sulla guerra in Afghanistan - un discorso che contiene l'annuncio del dispiegamento di altri 30mila soldati USA e un termine di 18 mesi per l'inizio del ritiro - non è piaciuto ai democratici ed è piaciucchiato ai repubblicani. In più non si sa come l'aumento delle truppe sarà finanziato. Nonostante Obama abbia deciso cose ragionevoli e scartato le opzioni più estreme - come riconosce questo editoriale del NYT - ormai è chiaro che la guerra in Afghanistan è la sua guerra. E non è esattamente questa la cosa per cui era stato eletto. In più - come nota John Dickerson - lo ha detto in modo confuso.
