OS X 10.10.4 Update Replaced Troubled Discoveryd Process

On June 30, Apple released OS X 10.10.4 update to fix the widespread networking issues that was plugged since 10.10. Apple replaced the home grown Discoveryd process with good old industry tested mDNSResponder. The troubled Discoveryd was introduced in OS X 10.10 back in October 2014.

The OS X Yosemite 10.10.4 update improves the stability, compatibility, and security of your Mac, and is recommended for all users.
This update:
- Improves networking reliability
- Improves Migration Assistant reliability
- Addresses an issue that prevented certain external monitors from functioning properly
- Improves the reliability of upgrading iPhoto and Aperture libraries to Photos
- Improves reliability when syncing photos and videos to iCloud Photo Library
- Addresses an issue that caused Photos to quit unexpectedly after importing some Leica DNG files
- Resolves an issue that could delay outgoing email messages in Mail
- Fixes an issue where a website could prevent the user from navigating away by presenting repeated JavaScript alerts in Safari

This 10.10.4 update primarily focuses on stability improvements and bug fixing.

Apple Initiates 2011 MacBook Pro Repairs Over Video Issues (Finally)

The wait is over finally. After signing a petition with thousands of signatures, flooding Apple Discussion Forum with thousands of posts and even few lawsuits, Apple has responded. It has offered repair of MacBook Pros from Early 2011 to Early 2013 which are experiencing GPU related issues. All 15" and 17" MBPs are included. According to Apple, the symptoms are

Distorted or scrambled video on the computer screen

When you use Safari as your primary browser, you must take the advantage of some essential plugins or extensions. They greatly enhance the power of Safari. Here I will discuss some notable plugins which are great for day to day use.

1. AdBlock

Almost everyone wants to get rid of annoying ads. They take valuable space and bandwidth. They even downloaded first when you open a web page. Here AdBlock comes to rescue. It blocks all the annoying ads without compromising the readability of the webpage. It is very customisable. If you want to unblock ads on a webpage or a specific domain, you can do that too.

2. ClickToFlash

The name says it all. It blocks all the Flash content in the browser. It puts a placeholder in place of Flash content. You can click to play. How to Copy Text in Quick Look

Quick Look is an awesome feature in OS X. It lets you preview the file contents without opening the associated app. But normally, we cannot copy from that Quick Look window. With a nifty trick we can enable that so that you can copy from that window. To enable copying, just execute the following code in Terminal.

defaults write com.apple.finder QLEnableTextSelection -bool true;killall Finder

Now you would be able to copy from Quick Look. And if you want to disable it you can do it by executing the following command

defaults delete com.apple.finder QLEnableTextSelection;killall Finder

Fix For iOS 8.0.1 Update Issue

The new iOS update 8.0.1 has some serious issues for the newest iPhones. Not only the phone looses cellular connectivity also access to TouchID features. Apple has apologised for this inconvenience on their website and promises for a fix within next few days.

Message Apple support page.

We have a workaround for you if you have an iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus and you lost cellular service and Touch ID functionality today after updating to iOS 8.0.1. You can reinstall iOS 8 through iTunes by following the instructions below. We are also preparing iOS 8.0.2 with a fix for the issue, and will release it as soon as it's ready in the next few days.

It seems that the issue is a major one that will take them days to fix. Apple has provided a workaround for this. According to their website, the following steps are the only way to make your iPhone work.

Follow these steps to reinstall iOS 8.0.
Make sure that you're using the latest version of iTunes.
Connect your iPhone to iTunes.
Back up your iPhone in iTunes on your Mac or PC. iCloud backups won't restore to earlier versions, including iOS 8.0.
Download the file below that corresponds to your device:
iPhone 6
iPhone 6 Plus
Select the file you just downloaded by doing one of these in iTunes:
Mac: Press the Option key and click Check for Update.
Windows: Press the Shift key and click Check for Update.
Press Update to install iOS 8 on your iPhone.
The Health app won't work in iOS 8 after these steps. It will be fixed in our upcoming iOS 8.0.2 software update.

iOS 8.0.1 Update Bricks iPhone 6 and 6 Plus

The new iOS 8.0.1 update from Apple which was pushed on 23rd Sept has wrecked havoc on iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus owners. Many users complained about loss of cellular connectivity and TouchID. The update was supposed to fix the Health app in iOS 8. After few hours, Apple pulled the update due to heavy complaint.

However the users of iPhone 4S, 5 and 5S were unaffected. Apple has promised to fix the issue in next few days. It seems that it's a major issue that will take days to fix it.

Apple Pushes OS X 10.9.5 Update

Apple has released 10.9.5 update for OS X Mavericks. This update is recommended for all Mac users and it includes bug fixes and security updates for Mac

The update fixes the reliability issue of VPN connections that use USB smart cards for authentication and reliability of accessing files located on SMB servers. It also includes a updated version of Safari 7.0.6.

For enterprise users, it has fixes for group membership in large networks and it allows authentication when roaming on 802.1x networks which use EAP-TLS.

You can update it through Mac App Store or downloading a standalone installer fro Apple Support page.

Apple Introduces Watch.

After lots of rumours, finally the Apple watch is here. And it's simply called Watch. It comes in three variants, Watch, Watch Sport and Watch Edition. It was unveiled by Tim Cook on 9th September 2014 at Flint Centre, Cupertino.

The Watch has a specially designed face and it is covered with Sapphire glass. Apple understands that, one size won't fits all. So the are offering in two sizes with 38 mm and 42 mm. It comes in various colours including 18K real gold. It has a specially designed user interface. You can chose from variety of watch faces to suit you.

In the back side of the watch, there are infrared and LED sensors present, which calculates your pulse . the back side also houses the charging port via beautifully designed MagSafe charger.

The watch will be available in Early 2015 and cost $349.

Apple Unveiled iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus

At last Apple has unveiled what people have been waiting for, a bigger iPhone. Apple CEO, Tim Cook unveiled the newest and biggest iPhone yet, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. It comes in two sizes, 4.7 inch and 5.5 inch. The bigger iPhone 6 Plus is the flagship.

On Tuesday, 9th September 2014, Tim Cook unveiled the hotly anticipated handsets at Flint Centre, Cupertino. The iPhone 6 sports the new A8 SoC (speed unknown) and M8 chip. The 64-bit A8 has 25% more CPU power and 50% more GPU power than A7. The iPhone 6 has a 4.7 inch IPS LCD display with a resolution of 1334x750 (326 PPI) and the Plus has a resolution of full HD i.e. 1920x1080 (401 PPI). The display is called Retina Display HD. The 6 is the thinnest iPhone at 6.8 mm and the Plus is at 7.1 mm.

While both the phones have similar specification, the Plus has few technologies exclusive to it. The OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) is exclusive to Plus. The bigger display supports landscape mode to certain apps such as, Mail.

The iPhone has better connectivity with 150 mbps cat4 LTE, Wi-Fi ac, VoLTE, Wi-Fi calling and NFC. The NFC works with Apple Pay, a payment service introduced by Apple at the event.

The iPhone keeps the same 8 MP iSight camera, but with improvement. It has the aperture of f/2.2 and a pixel size of 1.5µ. The True Tone flash is also present, but its round instead of oval. The camera offers faster auto focus with Phase Detection and Focus Pixels. It offers 1080p recording at 30/60 fps and slo-mo video at 240 fps. It's unknown at the point that the iPhone still records mono audio.

The iPhone is offered in three capacity versions, 16 GB, 64 Gb and 128 GB. The 32 GB option is gone as you get 64 at the price of 32. The starting price is unchanged at $199. The 6 will cost $649 and the Plus will cost you $749 unlocked. The new handsets will start selling on September 19th.

How To Use Function Keys As Standard Keys In OS X

In all Apple portables such as MacBook Pro and MacBook Air, we have functions keys which can be used for various functions such as brightness control, volume control, music playback etc. But if you want to treat the function keys as standard keys, it's easy. To change the setting follow the previous instructions.

Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu.

Install Mac OS X Yosemite Beta on VirtualBox

NOTE: This tutorial is only for Parallels Desktop users who are stuck at boot screen when installing Yosemite.

Since the OS X Yosemite public beta is out, many of us are eager to try it out. It has whole new interface and other new features. Parallels Desktop 9 for Mac has no support for this new OS. If you install it over Mavericks, you will be stuck at boot screen. But I will show you a simple solution of this. You can use VirtualBox to try Yosemite.

First of all go to Parallels VM folder and go to the Mavericks VM by right clicking it. Within that folder you will find Mac OS X.hdd. Right click and go inside it. You will find a file with extension .hds. Copy it to any other place and change the extension to .hdd.

When creating a new VM with VirtualBox, select "Use existing hard disk" when creating a new hard drive. When you finish creating the VM, start the virtual machine. After showing some errors, it will boot into Mavericks. You can install Yosemite within Mavericks.

You can increase the VRAM to 128 MB and enable 3D acceleration. The screen will be locked to 1024x768. But you can increase it by installing VB guest additions.

Yosemite is available as a Mac App Store download who have registered for public beta. It is limited to first 1 million users only. You will get a redeem code in your email to download it. If you have not got any email from Apple, then you can get the code by getting into the Apple beta site. The size of the download is 5.07 GBs.

Mac OS X 10.9.2 Realsed

Apple has released 10.9.2 update to fix various vulnerability. After the SSL security issue named as "gotofail" went public last week, Apple has responded quickly and patched that in this update.

There are few new things Mac users are getting in this update such as, FaceTime audio calls, call waiting feature in both FaceTime audio and video calls.
