MDP Programs Continue to Grow

With support from MacArthur, four more universities launched Master’s in Development Practice programs in the fall of 2011, following 15 schools that established MDP programs over the previous two years. MDP degrees are now available to students in 15 countries. At the conclusion of the 2010-2011 school year, MDP programs worldwide enrolled 376 students with an average of 21 students per school. Programs at another four universities are slated for launch in 2012.

Taskforce Formed to Protect Domestic Workers in Ghana

Ghana's Minister of Employment and Social Welfare announced the formation of a National Policy Framework on Decent Work for Domestic Workers taskforce to protect the rights of domestic workers at the Africa Regional workshop in Accra. The workshop was organized by the government of Ghana; the Global Forum on Migration and Development, of which MacArthur is the largest non-governmental supporter; MacArthur grantees UN Women and African Diaspora Policy Network; and other partners. Russian Grantee Wins Ruling, Repayment on Tax Status of Foreign Donations Add to Russia

Russia has repaid Foundation grantee Agora Human Rights Association nearly one million rubles (approximately $33,000) in excess taxes, the result of a precedent-setting ruling by Russia's Supreme Commercial Court, which found that Russian nonprofits are not required to pay tax on donations received from foreign donors. In the run up to this decision, Agora had been subject to a seemingly punitive array of inspections and seizures of property by the government, effectively blocking Agora's work for several weeks.

Study Details Homelessness, \"Doubling Up\" Among Low-Income Children

About 10 percent of children in low-income families reported at least one homeless episode – and an additional 24 percent had at least one episode where they lived "doubled up" with relatives, friends or other families – before age 6, according to a MacArthur-supported University of Illinois study.
