And the AluPen stylus is pretty solid for a stylus, and fits in your hand nicely, which is more than we can say for other stylus' we've tested out in the past.

Screeny: A Review and Giveaway!

Screeny is a small utility for capturing both screenshots and screen-casts. Once opened you will find it sitting patiently in your menu bar until the time you call upon it. It’s not a very complex app — and it needn’t be for what it is trying to achieve.

What’s Macgasmic?

What I love about Screeny is the ‘selection window.’ Most screenshot apps will allow you to make a selection of the area you would like to snap — however, in Screeny you get the ability to preset that size and make any adjustments you need before taking the shot. The general convention is dragging to select prior to pressing the capture button, but allowing this to be set beforehand ensures I have a good level of control. Screeny also allows the user to manually enter the pixel size — as well as having some size presets — which gives a great amount of control over captures.

The idea of the ‘selection field’ comes in to its own when capturing screencasts. With Screeny you are able to preset the area you would like to capture and only record what is going on in that box. For example, if you were developing an iPhone app and just wanted to record the area of the simulator that shows the iPhone screen, all you would need to do is resize the field around it and start recording. Simple.

What’s Not?

Screeny is a menu bar item. This could be seen as a positive by some people, but I would personally prefer it to be a full app of its own. I just prefer the idea of opening it up and closing it down. On my initial launch of Screeny I wasn’t entirely sure how to get access to the size controls, as they are something that you need to select from the menu bar icon.

It would appear to me that Screeny uses QuickTime’s screen-casting capabilities to capture its recordings. The quality of them isn’t outstanding — but Screeny is a very inexpensive app — so overall it cannot be knocked too much for the quality of the video it produces.

Conclusion

I really like Screeny. I have been looking for something cheap and relatively powerful for taking screen-casts and this definitely will be the product for me. The app has some differences to others of its kind and I am a big fan of the granularity and precision you have when making your size selection. For what it costs, it’s a very capable application.

On this week’s episode we focus on some iDevice products. After having spent a couple months with the Audyssey South of Market Audio Dock, I have to say, I’m pretty impressed. Given the footprint, the sound quality is fantastic. Being able to toss audio over to the device from your desk via Bluetooth is a bit of a godsend for my office.

We also spent quite a bit of time with the Joule stand by Element Case. The case has become a staple on my desk. While I wish the view angles were a little more adjustable, and the price wasn’t so steep for a piece of machined aluminium, the stand is certainly solid.

The Moshi iVisor AG is easily one of the better screen protectors we’ve tried out, and trust us, we’ve tried more than I’d like to admit. The matte finish and black border really help to hide any air bubbles that may be present under the screen protector. Given the price, I’d highly recommend any of Moshi’s screen protecting products.

Apple is close, but not quite there, on music-streaming deals

Apple is hoping to have all things worked out before WWDC so they have something to announce, something that’ll hold people over for the next couple of months, especially if the rumors of no iPhone 5 announcement are, in fact, true.

Apple has already inked deals with EMI Music, Warner Music, and Sony Music, and rumors of Universal Media jumping in are already being heard. The problem with this? Apple is still in need of publishing rights, and it looks like they’ll get them, but as with everything in technology, we have to see all angles of the coin.

These are a few things that could hold Apple back from successfully putting out a full music streaming service. There’s only a few weeks left until WWDC, so the fact that Apple hasn’t inked deals with all of the major record companies could indicate trouble ahead.

The labels own the recording rights but not the publishing rights. For example the Beatles’song “Twist and Shout” would have to go through tremendous paper work were it dealt with as a single song. If digital retailers want to sell The Beatles’ cover of that song, they have to pay EMI Music and Apple Corp — the record company, not the computer company, Apple Inc. — for the sound recording of The Beatles playing the song. They would then have to pay the publishing company that represents Phil Medley and Bert Russell, the men who wrote the song in its entirety, a mechanical licensing fee. If the retailer wanted to sell a version of “Twist and Shout” by a different group of musicians, Medley and Russell would gain yet more money.

While money may not be a major thing for Apple, it still makes Apple jump over hurdles to introduce something like this since they don’t control it themselves, but rather have to first get permission to control it, in a sense.

Apple isn’t necessarily fighting, but they are definitely the middle men here. Kudos to them for trying to make way for new products and services while there is tension between the publishing companies and labels. How will this turn out for the end users? How will this play a part in the way we listen to music? When we find out, we will be sure to report it as quick as humanly possible.

Sometimes things get a little bit geeky, and this episode is no exception. In today’s episode we chat entirely about reading news on digital devices. Well, it’s not entirely all news. We also talk about the Kobo eReader.

It’s fun to sit back and watch how news delivery mechanisms have changed over the years. Somewhere along the way we went from bookmarking our favorite news websites to subscribing to RSS, and now a lot of people are transitioning from RSS based systems to Twitter based readers like Flipboard.

There’s clearly a struggle going on between the new approach and the old approach, and that struggle is clearly demonstrated in the applications we talk about in this episode. Hopefully you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed recording it.

Apple announced brand new iMacs yesterday. They’re beastly, and come with Thunderbolt ports. If there was ever a moment where it would make sense to do away with a Mac Pro and replace it with an iMac, this may be it. The gang chats about that possibility and whether or not it makes sense to go iMac in a professional environment.

In addition to the iMac announcement, there have also been some leaks about new potential features in Lion. Both Castle and Reading List have made appearances around the rumor mill over the last week. During the show we fill you in on what both are, and what you might expect from them, should they actually make their way into the final version of Lion.

Also, how many of you have heard of Web Receipts? You’re not alone if you haven’t. Most of us didn’t even know they existed until recently. Apparently Apple has built in some tools to let users print to PDFs and then directly into a receipt folder. We talk a bit about it, and illustrate just how we use it.

Finally, what the heck is the problem with multitasking in iOS? It doesn’t really multitask at all. Instead it acts more like fast user switching, but from one application to another instead of account to account. Something needs to be done, because if iOS is going to dominate moving forward, it’ll eventually need to do more than one thing at once.

News this time of year is always a little iPhone heavy. We’re trying hard to avoid turning the podcast into an iPhone-centric episode at this point, but if our stats are any indicator, the iPhone 5 is on a lot of people’s mind this time around.

If you’ve been paying attention to the rumor mill the last couple of weeks, you’ve probably noticed an interesting looking mockup popup on the This is my next website. There’s a lot about it that we both love and hate, so we decided to talk about it at length.

What’s the point of talking about the iPhone 5 if we’re not going to stop for a moment and address the possibilities of a World Mode iPhone, and whether or not Verizon CFO Fran Shammo meant what we have assumed he meant when he said,

“The fluctuation, I believe, will come when a new device from Apple is launched, whenever that may be, and that we will be, on the first time, on equal footing with our competitors on a new phone hitting the market, which will also be a global device.”

We’re not sure that global device means world mode.

Finally, there’s been a lot of talk about RIM’s Playbook, but Apple pointed out that 80 percent of Fortune 500 companies are testing or deploying iPhones. Add in a cup of interest from the medical industry, and you’ve got yourself a recipe for success.

For those of you who haven’t been around for a while, we’ve spent some time doing a video podcast about a year ago. We learned something pretty quickly about it. In order to pull it off in a semi-professional manner, we needed more space. So we put it on hold, and took to the pavement to try to find a new studio. Previously we were recording in a third bedroom. It just wasn’t cutting it.

So this time, with new studio in hand, we found ourselves a camera man, and an editor to help out. The results are stunning, and we’re super excited to get rolling again with the project. We’ve already got seven episodes recorded, and the quality improvement from the first through to the last one we recorded is staggering.

Liberate your audio with Airfoil

AirPlay has brought some great media-sharing options to OSX and iOS, if all of your media is in iTunes. But what about Pandora? Maybe you have a third-party podcast catcher on your Mac.

If you want AirTunes/AirPlay capability outside of iTunes, then check out Airfoil. Version 4 was released a few months ago with some snappy new features, including Airfoil Speakers and Airfoil Video Player.

How It Works

Rogue Amoeba’s Airfoil uses Apple’s AirTunes (now AirPlay) infrastructure, but breaks it out of iTunes. Airfoil sends audio signals from a desktop computer to receiving devices, with a slight delay to keep audio in sync. You can select an individual program (like QuickTime or iTunes) or your entire system audio.

Airfoil Speakers

Airfoil Speakers is a receiving application for any desktop (Mac, Windows, & Linux) or iOS device. It plays the received audio through the main system audio (built-in speakers, connected receivers, etc.).

Desktop iterations have some basic playback controls (forward and back for QuickTime or iTunes), and certain metadata is also pushed to the Speakers apps, even on iOS, showing the name of a file or song playing, and a screencap or album artwork.

Hardware

Since Airfoil works with the AirPlay/AirTunes engine, anything that plays nice with that will work with Airfoil. This includes Airport Express (with AirTunes), Apple TV (both models), and third-party AirPlay speakers.

What’s Macgasmic — Airfoil Video Player

Besides the deliciousness of ubiquitous audio, you’ll also find the Airfoil Video Player, a newer addition currently for Mac only. It has a built-in web browser with shortcuts to YouTube, Hulu, and Netflix, but any webpage can be loaded here. I wasn’t able to find a video that didn’t work with the web mode.

Local file mode plays anything QuickTime supports, except for DRMed iTunes Store videos. DVD mode offers basic playback for DVD. Video only plays on the host device, but audio goes out to all receiving devices, all in sync. This is a great add-on with a lot of potential.

What’s Not — Also the Video Player

While the Airfoil Video Player is an awesome addition, it definitely feels like an initial version. In my tests, it would play fine as long as I wasn’t moving or resizing the window, scrolling around, trying to click away YouTube ads, etc. If I just let it play and didn’t mess with it, though, it played very smoothly.

Fullscreen web video was sluggish and skippy, and DVD upscaling to fullscreen didn’t look great. Also, no web video would work on my external display for some reason. Still, with any video problems, audio kept playing on all speakers and stayed in sync.

Practically speaking, the only way I’m going to use the Airfoil Video Player is if I’m cooking, doing chores, going through the inbox, etc. I like to move about the house occasionally as I catch up on shows or watch long web videos, etc. In any case, I either want the video fullscreen, or I want to be able to click around (read comments, explore the rest of the site, etc.). If fullscreen doesn’t work or look good, and if moving it around makes it hiccup, it’s not really of much use for me yet.

Conclusion

I use Airfoil every day. I play morning radio from Safari on my iMac, sending audio to my stereo in the bedroom (via an Airport Express with AirTunes), to my iPad or iPhone (via the free Airfoil Speakers for iOS) in the bathroom while I shower and the in kitchen while I fix breakfast. I almost always use it with Whole System Audio so I can hear iCal alerts, new mail, new iChats, etc. There’s not a room in the house where I can’t clearly hear my morning programs.

Airfoil is totally worth the $25 price-tag. If you’re unsure, download the free trial and give it a whirl.
