In response to Special - I dont see any (and didnt think were) M series MacBooks. All I see are M series MacBook Pros and MacBook Airs. From what her mother says, she needs a MacBook PRO but I told her she's not going to find an M series that has outrageous specs for around $500. waymos have had accidents. plain vanilla Teslas have had self-driving accidents.
so now roll-out self driving tesla taxis? wtf?
I'd rather be behind a 90yo granny or 8 yo kid who can't see above the steering wheel or Toonces .

The Austin Tesla taxis are not _exactly_ self driving. They have a Tesla employee in the passenger seat (a “safety driver” who is rumored to have a shutoff/takeover button) and (again, it’s thought) there is another Tesla employee remotely monitoring each taxi. Tech marches on, and so now “self-driving” taxis have 2 drivers.

Also:

Quote

Tesla has put on some other restrictions—rides will be limited to 6 a.m. to midnight (the opposite of Cruise’s first operations, which were only at night) and riders come from an invite-only list (as was also the case for Waymo, and Cruise and others in their early days). Rides will be limited to a restricted service area (often mistakenly called a “geofence”) which avoids downtown, and complex and difficult streets and intersections. Rides will be unavailable in inclement weather, which also can happen with other vehicles, though fairly rarely today. Tesla FSD is known to disable itself if rain obscures some of its cameras—only the front cameras have a rain wiper. The fleet will be small.

Apple Pulls 'Convince Your Parents to Get You a Mac' Ad From YouTube

....Apple has marked as private its day-old The Parent Presentation video on YouTube, meaning that it is no longer available to watch.

Apple has also moved The Parent Presentation to the bottom of its College Students page, effectively burying it. When we reported on the marketing campaign yesterday, the presentation was prominently featured at the top of the page.

It is unclear why Apple is suddenly hiding the ad, or if it will return. Apple did not immediately respond to our request for comment.

On social media, some people said that the ad was cringe or gross, so perhaps Apple pulled the video due to overly negative reception. To be clear, this is merely speculation, and there were others who found humor in the video.

Teenagers can be a tough crowd to impress.

It would not be the first time that Apple pulled ads from YouTube that did not go over well, or became the subject of a class action lawsuit.

The Parent Presentation is a customizable slideshow that explains why a Mac is a useful tool in college. The presentation is available to download for free in PowerPoint, Keynote, and Google Slides formats. Students can customize the presentation slides, and then show it to their parents to convince them to buy them a Mac.

In an accompanying YouTube video shared by Apple, comedian Martin Herlihy showed a group of high school students how to effectively use The Parent Presentation..........

.....and raising annual fee to $795....

JPMorgan Chase unveils new Sapphire Reserve card perks and $795 annual fee

....JPMorgan Chase is betting that a long list of new perks will keep affluent Americans hooked on its Sapphire Reserve card, despite a hefty bump in its annual fee.

The bank on Tuesday unveiled an update to its premium credit card, which will now carry a $795 annual fee. That is a 45% jump from its previous level and the card issuer's largest price increase for the Sapphire since its 2016 launch.

But JPMorgan says users will now get more than $2,700 in annual benefits when the updated card launches on Monday. That includes most of its previous benefits, along with new ones tied to how customers earn and spend points on travel and dining.

For instance, the bank is touting a new redemption program that doubles the value of points used for select travel offers and a new $500 annual credit at its collection of hotels and resorts.

There is also a new $300 dining credit at restaurants that are part of the Sapphire Reserve Exclusive Tables network, a $300 credit for purchases at StubHub or Viagogo, and free subscriptions to Apple TV+ and Apple Music, worth $250 per year, JPMorgan said.

Customers who spend at least $75,000 annually on their cards unlock other perks, including top-tier status at Southwest Airlines and IHG Hotels and Resorts.

JPMorgan also introduced a new Sapphire Reserve business card with a $795 annual fee and similar perks as the consumer card, along with credits for ZipRecruiter and Google Workspace. That positions the bank squarely against American Express, which has had a business version of its comparable Platinum card for decades.

Upscale ambitions

JPMorgan, the biggest U.S. bank by assets, shook up the card industry with the launch of the Sapphire Reserve almost a decade ago. The bank cribbed from a playbook established by AmEx by bundling perks around travel and dining, and later opened its own network of luxurious airport lounges.

But JPMorgan introduced its premium card with signing bonuses and credits that almost made getting one a financial no-brainer, forcing other issuers to boost their card offers in response.

Now, with JPMorgan heading upmarket with the Sapphire Reserve, the bank is at risk of alienating customers who may opt to downgrade to a Sapphire Preferred card or offerings from AmEx or Capital One, said senior Bankrate analyst Ted Rossman.

"When the Sapphire Reserve first came out, it was a solid middle-class play that offered champagne travel on a beer budget," Rossman said. "These premium cards are going more luxury, and I wonder if the $800 fees are becoming too much for some to stomach."

That could be by design, according to Rossman. AmEx and Capital One have had to rein in access to airport lounges because of overcrowding, and some users have complained that their premium cards no longer feel as special.

Whether cards like the Sapphire Reserve still make sense at $795 in annual fees depends on if customers will take advantage of enough of the new perks, Rossman said.......

Quote
RAMd®d
That's a great price for an HDD, but that's a lot of data on one spindle.

At that price, two are cheap though.

I'd never risk having that much stored on a drive, especially one packaged as an external drive by Seagate or WD. You would definitely want backup for that backup and I would also want to extract it from its cheap housing and put it into something more robust.

This is what I do.

24TB in primary drive (19TB used)
20TB backup 1
2x 10TB backup 2

Been doing the same since 400GB PATA drives were the biggest.

Easy peasy.

My method has been to buy 3 of any drive I intend to use for backups.

#1 is the live drive used for the backups
#2 is an onsite weekly clone of #1
#3 is an offsite clone of #2 (#2 and #3 get exchanged with each other whenever I visit the offsite location, ideally monthly).

I might add a #4 to this, a new in box spare to be used to replace the first of #1-#3 that fails.

And buy big and it may be 10 years before you fill it up and need to repeat.

BTW: that deal on the 26TB drive expired a while ago, went from $100 off, to $50 off, and now $0 off. (Full price is $350).
