BBEdit 11.6.1 - Powerful text and HTML editor.

BBEdit is the leading professional HTML and text editor for the Mac. Specifically crafted in response to the needs of Web authors and software developers, this award-winning product provides a plethora of features for editing, searching, and manipulation of text. BBEdit transforms text with high performance.

An intelligent interface provides easy access to BBEdit's best of class features including grep pattern matching, search and replace across multiple files, function navigation and syntax coloring for numerous source code languages, FTP and SFTP open and save, AppleScript, Perl, and OS X Unix scripting support, glossary support, and a complete set of HTML tools.

Version 11.6.1:
Additions
  • The "Options" panel in the Multi-File Search window now provides control over whether to search Git ignored files or not.
  • The file filter popup menu for disk browsers and project windows (available under the magnifying glass icon) now has a command: "Git Ignored Files". This command controls whether git-check-ignore is applied when filtering files for inclusion in the sidebar. It's off by default, so any item which is excluded by a .gitignore file will be hidden.
  • The "Open File by Name" window gets a control to include Git ignored files in the results. (This has no effect when using an URL or entering a full file path.)
  • On the "Text Display" submenu of the View menu, there are three new commands: "Zoom In", "Zoom Out", and "Actual Size". Use these to change the magnification of the text in editing views. For convenience you can assign keyboard equivalents to these commands in the "Menus & Shortcuts" preferences.
  • The Find Differences command now offers an option to include Git ignored files when comparing folders.
Changes
  • The "List Display Font" setting in the Appearance preferences has been replaced with a slider to set the font size. Lists in the application all use the system font. Most will use the specified size, except in specific cases where circumstance requires the use of a fixed font size.
  • Added Command-K and Command-R as keyboard equivalents for "Check Syntax" and "Run", respectively. (These were chosen for compatibility with THINK C.)
  • Differences that have been applied are now crossed out in the Differences window list, in order to avoid janky font italicizing effects on some OS versions.
  • When using "Check Syntax" or "Run" on an unsaved or untitled document, the application will now write out a temporary copy of the document. In the case of untitled documents, the temporary copy will be in the system-designated temporary items location, which is arbitrary but generally not anywhere near $HOME.
Fixes
  • Fixed a case in which changes made by a documentDidSave attachment script would trigger a subsequent warning about the document having unsaved changes.
  • Made changes to improve performance when bringing up the Open File by Name window with very large Git projects.
  • Fixed a pair of bugs that conspired to prevent scratchpad documents (the Scratchpad and Unix Worksheet) from correctly remembering and restoring their state across open/close cycles.
  • Fixed bug in which files opened via the ODB external editor interface (e.g. from other file transfer clients) would show the path to the temporary file rather than the display path provided by the client.
  • Fixed Perforce configuration file discovery so that config files (as specified in the P4CONFIG environment variable) whose names are something other than .p4config will work correctly.
  • Fixed a crash which would occur when changing a language-specific color scheme setting to "Application Defaults".
  • If a folder that you chose for a disk browser, instaproject (by dragging it on to the application), multi-file search, or Find Differences is itself ignored by a .gitignore file, the application ignores (see what I did there) that fact, and will operate on its contents as usual.
  • The "BBEdit Light" and "BBEdit Classic" color schemes no longer include explicit highlight colors, thus allowing the system highlight color selection to apply.
  • Fixed crash which would occur when completing a Markup Builder panel operation with some attributes set to empty values.
  • Fixed bug in which the color used for highlighting selected items in lists wouldn't always track changes to the highlight color setting in the General system preferences.
  • Fixed a crash which would occur on OS X 10.12 when opening the Preferences window more than once during a run of the application. (This addresses Radar 27293621.)
  • Fixed bug in which PHP completion was not providing detailed parameter completions.
  • Fixed bug in which the File Info panel would fail to appear on OS X 10.9.5.
  • Fixed bug in which using up-arrow and down-arrow while in the Open File by Name window's search box would change the selection in the results list, without bringing it into view.
  • Worked around OS behavior on 10.11 in which the search box in the Open File by Name window would lose keyboard focus and not get it back when it should have.
  • Fixed bug in which changing the "Document navigation" setting in the Appearance preferences didn't take effect until you created a new window or restarted the application.
  • Fixed bug in which the file info panel for remote documents (opened via built-in FTP/SFTP or a third-party file transfer client) would show file information for the backing cache file, rather than hiding the Info and Permissions tabs as was intended.
  • When using "New Text Document", "New Folder", or "New HTML Document" on the contextual menu in instaprojects, the save panel will new point to a more predictable directory when possible.
  • The "Copy Path" commands on the Edit menu now behave reasonably for documents opened from remote sources via the built-in FTP/SFTP support as well as by external file-transfer clients.
  • Fixed a bug in which a -37 error would be reported when trying to save a new document with a name containing certain characters.
  • Improved the reporting of PCRE pattern errors in the "Replace All" sheet used for text factory operations.
  • Fixed bug in which keywords matched by the "Keyword Pattern" in a codeless language module were colored as comments rather than as keywords.
  • Fixed bug in which "Open Counterpart" and the Counterparts menu didn't find eligible files in the absence of data from the Open File by Name cache.
  • Text generated by AppleScripts run from clippings or "Run AppleScript Filter" text factory actions is now normalized to linefeeds before being applied.
  • If your default shell is tcsh, shell worksheets will now use bash instead, because tcsh doesn't play nice in worksheets.
  • Fixed bug in which filenames whose extensions ended with a decimal digit would not match a custom language mapping for that extension.
  • Made a change to resolve an SSL connection failure when attempting "Check for Updates" on macOS Sierra betas.
  • Fixed a layout goof in the Keyboard preferences on pre-10.11 OS versions.
  • Made a change so that .editorconfig file discovery is no longer attempted for documents opened via the built-in FTP/SFTP support.
  • Fixed a bug in progress reporting in which the progress dialog would occasionally be blank, except for the progress bar and Cancel button.
  • Added additional diagnostic logging to help diagnose cases in which Unix tool execution fails unexpectedly.
  • TeX comments no longer interfere with Balance operations.
  • When using the "Check Syntax" or "Run" commands for a supported language, the command path in the #! line is now honored in preference to the language module's built-in command. Any specific arguments for debugging (e.g. -d for Perl) may be added as needed, and if so will be added after any arguments specified on the #! line.
  • Fixed a bug in which "Show Scratchpad" in the application dock menu didn't bring the Scratchpad to the front in situations where the application was in the background.
  • Updated the list of Perl keywords, and split Perl predefined functions into a separate list so that they're colored as predefined names, and not as language keywords.
  • Fixed cosmetic bug in which items in the recently used search strings popup (in the Find and Multi-File Search windows) had backslashes escaped.
  • Fixed bug in which the general-purpose "Unix Script Output" log would be nested one folder deeper in ~/Library/Logs/BBEdit/ than it should have been.
  • Fixed a crash which would occur when using a property specifier as the source for a scripted multi-file search/replace/text factory operation.
  • Text output from Unix scripts and filters is now normalized, so that any carriage return (ASCII 13) characters are converted to the internal representation, rather than appearing as gremlins.
  • Fixed bug in which collapsing and then expanding the "Currently Open Documents" section in a project's sidebar while the "Projects" section was collapsed could result in the items in the Currently Open Documents list being unresponsive to clicks.
  • Fixed drawing glitch which would occur when showing or hiding the Navigation Bar.
  • Script execution from the "Run" command now displays progress in situations where it didn't before.
  • When looking for installed Unix tools, the application will now enforce the restriction that any binary executables actually contain code that is runnable on the current CPU architecture. This fixes problems on systems that have obsolete PowerPC code installed in paths used by the application to find executables.
  • Fixed bug in which Markdown syntax coloring would become inconsistent during certain edits in text that was not part of a list or quoted block.
  • Fixed incorrect coloring of Markdown inline code while typing an unterminated code run at the end of a document.
  • Fixed a bug in which Git ignore checking for a batch of files would throw an unreported internal exception in some cases; this would lead to odd application behavior subsequently. (Typically this happened when using the Counterparts menu in the navigation bar.)

  • OS X 10.9.5 or later

TeXShop 3.70 - TeX front end.

TeXShop is a TeX previewer for OS X, written in Cocoa. Since PDF is a native file format on OS X, TeXShop uses "pdftex" and "pdflatex"; rather than "tex" and "latex" to typeset; these programs in the standard teTeX distribution of TeX produce PDF output instead of DVI output.

Version 3.70:
  • Version 3.70 again uses the more extensive fixes by Martin Hairer for a memory leak problem, but with a small change to fix the bugs in the Preview toolbar that occurred in version 3.66.
  • The behavior of the PDF search field on the toolbar has been improved. As before, command-F activates the search field so text can immediately be typed into it. Push RETURN to select the first occurrence of the word of phrase typed. This now switches the first responder to the PDF view, so the selection is highlighted in blue and easy to find. To find the next occurrence, type command-g. To search backward, type shift-command-g. These commands again produce selections highlighted in blue. They are chosen to make searches in the text and PDF windows behave the same way. (In earlier versions, RETURN and SHIFT RETURN performed these functions, but this was not parallel to find for text, and left gray selections rather than blue ones.) To search on a particular page, go to that page and select some text, making sure the selection is not empty. The next search will begin at that spot. An empty selection will start the search at the beginning of the document. If a search reaches the end of the document, it will cycle back to the beginning.
  • The PDF drawer alternate search method is still available. It works on all systems, including Sierra. However, Sierra's PDF search routines seem to have significant bugs, which have been reported to Apple. If these bugs are fixed, the current version will probably fail on Sierra, but this will be very easy to fix.

DropDMG 3.4.1 - Quickly create disk image (dmg) archives.

DropDMG is the easiest way to create OS X disk images, which pack entire folders or disks into a single compressed file, either for transport across the Internet or simply for backup. They are Apple's preferred format for distributing Mac software. Disk images are also the only archive format whose contents you can directly access in the Finder. Just drag-and-drop a folder or file, and you're done. Or, you can drag an existing disk image or archive onto DropDMG to convert it to any of the other supported formats or to burn it to CD or DVD.

DropDMG supports advanced options such as signed, encrypted, and segmented disk images; WYSIWYG layout with background pictures and custom volume icons; and rich-text license agreements in multiple languages. There are many time-saving features, and it can also be automated via AppleScript, the command-line, and Automator.

Version 3.4.1:
  • The Signing menu now groups the identities to make it clearer which type you should choose for .dmg files vs. .xip files. If no valid Developer ID identity is found, it tells you how to get one.
  • Updated the Dutch, French, German, Italian, and Portuguese localizations.

We've had people use Graffle to plan plotlines for a story, make an overview of an operating system, show the evolution of computers, and even show how diseases can spread in a closed population. If you want to organize your thoughts, your projects, or even your friends graphically using boxes and lines, OmniGraffle is your tool.

The Hit List 1.1.26 - Advanced reminder application.

The Hit List manages the daily chaos of your modern life. It's easy to learn - it's as easy as making lists. And it's powerful enough to let you plan, then forget, then act when the time is right.

Your life is complicated enough as it is. The tool to manage your life shouldn't be. The Hit List keeps things simple by not forcing you to learn a system. It can be as simple as just keeping a list of things to do as you would on a piece of paper. However, if you do have a task management system such as Getting Things Done by David Allen, The Hit List is flexible enough to support you.

Forget what you need to do--with confidence.

Version 1.1.26:
  • Improve printing
  • Improvements to library fix operation
  • Reveal Task Library and Fix Task Library menu items added to Help menu. Hold down the option key on the keyboard to access them

  • OS X 10.7.5 or later

MKVtoolnix 9.4.0 - Create, alter, and inspect Matroska (mkv) files (beta).

MKVtoolnix is a set of tools to create, alter, and inspect Matroska files under OS X, Linux and other Unices, and Windows. They do for Matroska what the OGMtools do for the OGM format and then some.

Since May 1st 2003, the Matroska libraries themselves and my Matroska tools are officially released as a first public beta version. Although all of them are still under heavy development, I urge you to download the software, test it and report any errors you encounter to me. I'm always grateful for good bug reports because I miss so many mistakes and you guys normally find them. Your feedback is important to me :)

Version 9.4.0:

Note: Now requires OS X 10.9 or later.

  • mkvpropedit: bug fix: mkvpropedit will no longer say that it's writing the changes if only attachment changes are specified and none of the specified attachments can be found.
  • MKVToolNix GUI: chapter editor bug fix: overly long chapter names don't cause the GUI's window to become overly wide anymore.
  • mkvmerge: DTS bug fix: if present mkvmerge will use an XLL extension's sample rate information as the sample rate to put into the track headers.
  • mkvmerge: new feature: added support for reading Apple ProRes video from MOV/MP4 files. Patch by Chao Chen (see AUTHORS).
  • mkvmerge: bug fix: when appending files mkvmerge wasn't starting clusters on video key frame anymore for the first and all following appended files.
  • MKVToolNix GUI: merge tool enhancement: when adding attachments the GUI will check if there are attachments or attached files with the same name as the file to add. If so the GUI will tell the user and ask for confirmation.
  • mkvmerge: enhancement: mkvmerge now accepts file names in square brackets for appending files, e.g., "mvkmerge -o out.mkv [ in1.avi in2.avi in3.avi ]" instead of "mkvmerge -o out.mkv in1.avi + in2.avi + in3.avi".
  • mkvmerge: bug fix: VP8 in Ogg: fixed dropping the first frame and the timestamp calculation.
  • mkvmerge: bug fix: mkvmerge does no longer emit a warning if no comment header packet is found when reading tracks from Ogg/OGM files.
  • MKVToolNix GUI: merge tool enhancement: the "select a play list to add" dialog does now contain a column with the number of chapters for each play list found.
  • MKVToolNix GUI: job queue enhancement: dragging-and-dropping a valid .mtxcfg file (either a full job file or one containing only merge settings without the job properties) onto the job queue window will import the dropped .mtxcfg job into the job queue. Rest of the implementation of #1714.
  • MKVToolNix GUI: merge tool enhancement: dragging-and-dropping a job queue .mtxcfg file onto the merge tool or using one as a command line parameter to the mkvtoolnix-gui executable will import the .mtxcfg job into the job queue. Part of the implementation of #1714.
  • MKVToolNix GUI: merge tool bug fix: the automatic adjustments to the output file name based on the track types selected for muxing and the mechanism for keeping output file names unique had been broken since release v9.3.0.
  • MKVToolNix GUI: merge tool enhancement: toggling the WebM mode check box will update the output file name's extension automatically.
  • MKVToolNix GUI: merge tool bug fix: the GUI v9.3.0 was often creating an invalid syntax for the --probe-range-percentage parameter for mkvmerge due to uninitialized memory.
  • build system: libEBML v1.3.4 and libMatroska v1.4.5 are now required due to several new elements having been specified for Matroska, and mkvmerge uses those elements.
  • mkvmerge, MKVToolNix GUI: new chapter generation feature: two new placeholders have been introduced when generating chapters for appended files, FILE_NAME and FILE_NAME_WITH_EXT. The former will be replaced by the appended file's name without its extension; the latter with its extension.
  • MKVToolNix GUI: merge tool enhancement: when opening a saved configuration (via the menu as well as via drag-and-drop) the current tab will be replaced if it is empty ( = in the same state it is in right after creating new mux settings).
  • mkvmerge, MKVToolNix GUI: added an option for specifying how much of a MPEG PS or TS file is probed for tracks (--probe-range-percentage).
  • mkvmerge: MPEG TS: considerable parts of the module have been rewritten. Due to its convoluted structure didn't buffer PES packets properly before trying to parse the PES header leading to invalid memory accesses in certain cases.
  • mkvmerge: bug fix: fixed overly long file type detection in some cases when text subtitle type probing read a lot of data due to there being no carriage returns near the start of the file.
  • mkvmerge, mkvextract, MKVToolNix GUI: bug fix: several fixes to the handling of country codes. The list has been updated to reflect the currently valid top level domain country codes. Deprecated codes such as "gb" for "Great Britain" are now mapped to their updated values ("uk" for "United Kingdom" in this case).
  • mkvmerge: WavPack4 bug fix: relaxed the stream detection criteria to only require the major version to be 4 and not to check the minor version.
  • mkvmerge, mkvinfo: new feature: added flags to support the Colour elements in the video tracks of Matroska containers. Users can use those flags to specify the colour space, transfer function, chromaticity coordinates etc. These properties are useful for correct colour reproduction of high dynamic range / wide colour gamut videos.
  • configure: fixed the Qt detection with Qt 5.7.0 which now requires the compiler to be in C++11 mode.
  • build system: libEBML v1.3.4 and libMatroska v1.4.5 are now required due to the usage of new elements introduced in libMatroska v1.4.5. The copies included in the MKVToolNix source code have been updated to those releases as well.
  • mkvmerge: MP4 bug fix wrt. DTS handling: mkvmerge will re-derive parameters such as number of channels and sampling frequency from the DTS bitstream circumventing invalid values in the track headers (e.g., a channel count of 0).
  • mkvmerge: TrueHD bug fix: fixed detection of 96 kHz sampling frequency.
  • mkvinfo's GUI: fix a crash due to wrong usage of referenced temporary objects.
  • MKVToolNix GUI: merge tool enhancement: the default track languages to set can now also be set whenever the language in the source file is 'undefined' ('und'). This is now the default and can be changed back to the old behavior (only set if the source file doesn't contain a language attribute) in the preferences.
  • MKVToolNix GUI: merge tool enhancement: menus have been added to both the "start muxing" and the "add to job queue" buttons. The menus let the user override the preferences regarding clearing merge settings after starting to mux and after adding a job to the queue respectively.
  • mkvmerge: the warning about not being able to determine whether a raw AAC file contains HE-AAC/AAC+/SBR has been removed.
  • MKVToolNix GUI: enhancement: all file names are now displayed with their native path separators (e.g., "C:somewhereoutput.mkv" on Windows).
  • MKVToolNix GUI: merge tool bug fix: the GUI now takes into account whether splitting is activated when looking for and warning due to existing destination files.
  • mkvmerge: bug fix: the parser for the --default-duration argument was wrongfully handling arguments of the form "123/456i" (only this specific syntax and only with "i" as the unit; other formats and units were fine). This is part of #1673.
  • Additionally the parser doesn't use the "double" data type internally anymore fixing loss of precision and failing test cases on certain 32bit platforms. This fixes #1705.
  • MKVToolNix GUI: merge tool enhancement: the action "select all attached files" in the popup menu actions for the attached files view has been split up into "enable all attached files" and "disable all attached files".
  • MKVToolNix GUI: bug fix on Windows: removing the drive letter does not cause the colon to be removed automatically anymore.
  • MKVToolNix GUI: merge tool bug fix: it's no longer possible to select "1" as the maximum number of files to split into as mkvmerge doesn't accept that value.
  • mkvmerge: bug fix: the "interval" chapter generation mode was always creating one chapter too many.
  • mkvmerge: bug fix: if a certain number of chapters had been generated with --generate-chapters then mkvmerge wasn't replacing the void placerholder with the actual chapters.
  • MKVToolNix GUI: merge tool bug fix: the track column "default track in output" wasn't taking into account if the track had its "default track" flag set to "no" in the source file. This would result in the column showing "yes" in certain situations even though mkvmerge would assign "no".
  • mkvmerge: bug fix: fixed detection of (E-)AC-3 in MPEG TS files with unusual stream types (e.g., 0x87) but with (E-)AC-3 PMT descriptors.
  • mkvmerge, mkvextract: bug fix: fixed handling of Big Endian PCM with a bit depth other than 16, 32 or 64 bits/sample. Other formats were using the Little Endian codec ID, but their content was actually not byte-swapped to match it. Now those other bit depths are byte-swapped to Little Endian, too.
  • mkvinfo: the change to start the GUI by default on Windows and Mac OS has been reverted. Instead a separate executable (mkvinfo-gui) will be included for those platforms which starts the GUI by default. The newly introduced option "--no-gui" will remain valid but won't have any effect when used with mkvinfo.
  • mkvinfo GUI: enhancement: the window title now includes the file name.
  • mkvmerge: enhancement: the "bit depth" track header field will be set for DTS tracks from the first DTS core header.
  • mkvmerge: bug fix: the time zone portion of the "date_local" member of the JSON and verbose identification formats contained the time zone's name instead of its offset on Windows due to the Visual C++ runtime's std::strftime not being C++11 compliant. Additionally this resulted in errors about invalid UTF-8 strings for locales where the time zone's name contained non-ASCII characters.

  • OS X 10.9 or later
