gnuplot 5.4.10 - Visualize mathematical functions and data. (Free)

gnuplot is a portable command-line driven interactive datafile (text or binary) and function plotting utility for UNIX, IBM OS/2, MS Windows, DOS, Apple Mac, VMS, Atari and many other platforms. The software is copyrighted but freely distributed (i.e., you don't have to pay for it). It was originally intended as graphical program which would allow scientists and students to visualize mathematical functions and data. It does this job pretty well, and in addition it serves as non-interactive plotting engine for miscellaneous portable third-party applications, like Octave. Gnuplot is developed and supported since 1986, and having its scripts and commands easy to understand text files, it is time-portable as well.

Gnuplot supports various kinds of plots. In 2D, it can draw line, point, dot, box, histogram graphs or vector fields. In 3D, it supports line, point and dot surfaces, with or without hidden line removal. It supports color or grayscale surfaces and maps, even for non-equidistant and non-rectangular 3D data, otherwise it offers data gridding.

Gnuplot supports many different types of terminals: interactive screen terminals (with mouse and hotkey functionality), pen plotters (like hpgl), printers (including postscript and many color devices), and printings to output file as vectorial pseudo-devices like LaTeX, metafont, pdf, svg, or bitmap png. Gnuplot is easily extensible to include new devices.

Fixes:

Postscript: build failed in 5.4.9 if neither gd nor cairo libraries present

Data-dependent variable point properties in polar plots

Configure script modified to work with macOS+Homebrew

Changes:

Use 64-bit integers for iteration (allows iteration over dates)

R 4.3.2 - Statistical computing and graphics. (Free)

R is a language and environment for statistical computing and graphics. It is a GNU project which is similar to the S language and environment which was developed at Bell Laboratories (formerly AT&T, now Lucent Technologies) by John Chambers and colleagues. R can be considered as a different implementation of S. There are some important differences, but much code written for S runs unaltered under R.

R provides a wide variety of statistical (linear and nonlinear modelling, classical statistical tests, time-series analysis, classification, clustering, ...) and graphical techniques, and is highly extensible. The S language is often the vehicle of choice for research in statistical methodology, and R provides an Open Source route to participation in that activity.

One of R's strengths is the ease with which well-designed publication-quality plots can be produced, including mathematical symbols and formulae where needed. Great care has been taken over the defaults for the minor design choices in graphics, but the user retains full control.

Bug fixes:

substr(x, n, L) <- cc now works (more) correctly for multibyte UTF-8 strings x when L > nchar(x), thanks to a report and patch by 'Architect 95'.

contrib.url(character()) now returns 0-length character() as documented, which also avoids spurious warnings from available.packages() et al. in the edge case of an empty vector of repository URLs.

readChar(., 4e8) no longer fails, thanks to Kodi Arfer's report (PR#18557).

lapply(<list>, as.data.frame) no longer warns falsely for some base vector components.

Diogenes 4.6.2 - Tool for searching/browsing ancient Latin and Greek texts. (Free)

Diogenes is a tool for searching and browsing the databases of ancient texts, primarily in Latin and Greek, that are published by the Thesaurus Linguae Graecae and the Packard Humanities Institute. It is free software: you are encouraged to modify, improve, and redistribute it under the terms of the GNU General Public license.

General Features

For those who have not used Diogenes before, it has a number of useful features:

It's Free

Diogenes is free, open-source software (GPL v3).

Deep Integration of Morphology and Lexica

Click on any word and get a morphological analysis along with the corresponding entries in the LSJ (Greek) or L-S (Latin) lexicon. In the lexicon entries, click on a citation to jump to the context (where possible). It is also possible to perform morphological searches (i.e. to search for all or selected inflected forms of a given word). Morphological data comes from Perseus.

Powerful Searching

You can create groups of texts to search within (and for the TLG, you can select by date, genre, etc.). You can jump from search results right to the context of each passage. You can search for words in any order within a given scope and delimit that scope by punctuation or number of lines.

Efficient Reading

It's easy to open up a given passage of any Greek or Latin text and start reading with the lexicon a click away, or to browse through the dictionaries to look up a word.

Browser front-end updated to Electon version 20 (from version 5):

This should eliminate spurious anti-virus warnings (for now);

PDFs are now shown in a new Diogenes window rather than in an external browser; likewise for external web links.

Tweaks to the user interface:

better keyboard navigation;

semi-persistent state for the splash screen;

facility to jump to a new passage in the work currently being read.

Added support for the the more recent TLL fascicles (from vols. 9.1 and 11.2).

Native version for recent Macs with Apple silicon processors.

Updated icon for Macs (thanks to Helge Baumann).

Very large search output is now split into pages to avoid crashing the browser.

Facility to search the headwords of ancient lexica (e.g. the Suda).

Better display of editorial notes in PHI texts.

Fixed a long-standing bug that prevented accented and non-Latin characters from being used in the names of in user-defined subsets of texts.

Fixed (for Windows 10 and later) another long-standing Windows bug that caused problems when non-Latin characters were used in the names of the paths to the folder holding the databases.

Removed problematic code that sometimes interfered with finding citations in very short or fragmentary texts.

RAAViewer is a free program that allows viewing of labeled images of human anatomy. The labels are linked to a database that offers in-depth descriptions of the parts of anatomy. An image or series of images is stored in a folder and then accessed by the program. Many folders of images are included with the download and the user can access them using the program on their own personal computer. The download is large because it includes over 700 labeled anatomic images

You might want to first download the manual, which is relatively small, to get a better understanding of the program.

The program is bundled with a basic set of axial illustrations of the human body published in Eycleshymer's A Cross-Section Anatomy.

Slowly, over time, additional sets of images are being labeled and posted to this Web site.

Bug Fix

Cleaning up bugs that I have been made aware of. The manual has been reedited correcting various outdated text.

New Features

Working on reducing all the dire warnings that have accompanied installing the program after downloading from the Web. The program is now notarized by Apple which makes things smoother.

The mechanisms to install the support files have been updated. The support files now end up in: ~Library/Application Support/net.bearboat.RAAViewer. [Previously the parent folder was com.bearboat.RAAViewer instead of net.bearboat.RAAViewer]

GeoGebra Classic (was GeoGebra) is a dynamic mathematics software for all levels of education that joins arithmetic, geometry, algebra, and calculus. It offers multiple representations of objects in its graphics, algebra, and spreadsheet views that are all dynamically linked.

While other interactive software (e.g., Cabri Geometry, Geometer's Sketchpad) focus on dynamic manipulations of geometrical objects, the idea behind GeoGebra is to connect geometric, algebraic, and numeric representations in an interactive way. You can do constructions with points, vectors, lines, and conic sections, as well as functions, and change them dynamically afterwards. Furthermore, GeoGebra allows you to directly enter and manipulate equations and coordinates. Thus you can easily plot functions, work with sliders to investigate parameters, find symbolic derivatives, and use powerful commands like Root or Sequence.

SingleCrystal is an elegant, easy-to-use program for visualizing and understanding diffraction patterns from single crystals.

SingleCrystal lets you simulate simulation electron diffraction patterns and reciprocal lattice sections - which can be compared directly with observed data. The program also lets you display stereographic projections of planes, traces, zones and zone axes. You can rotate crystals with the mouse, or tilt controls, and observe how the diffraction pattern changes. Screen tools allow easy measurement and indexing of reflexions, as well as the display of phase information for scattered beams.

SingleCrystal is designed to work with CrystalMaker, allowing users to visualize crystal structures then with a single menu command, display the diffraction pattern in SingleCrystal. The program can also be used as a stand-alone application, reading from CrystalMaker "crystal" files.

Enhanced Structure Checking. When editing an existing crystal, or importing a new one, the program now performs additional checks to ensure that inter-axial angles are non zero and that their sums are less than 360°.

Miscellaneous Changes. This version includes miscellaneous fixes and enhancements.

Update checking works with our new SSL-based web server.

Fixed a very-rare bug involving the "Notes" field in CrystalMaker text (CMTX) files.

Coq is a formal proof management system. It provides a formal language to write mathematical definitions, executable algorithms and theorems together with an environment for semi-interactive development of machine-checked proofs.

Summary of changes

Coq version 8.16 integrates changes to the Coq kernel and performance improvements along with a few new features. We highlight some of the most impactful changes here:

The guard checker (see Guarded) now ensures strong normalization under any reduction strategy.

Irrelevant terms (in the SProp sort) are now squashed to a dummy value during conversion, fixing a subject reduction issue and making proof conversion faster.

Introduction of reversible coercions, which allow coercions relying on meta-level resolution such as type-classes or canonical structures. Also allow coercions that do not fullfill the uniform inheritance condition.

Generalized rewriting support for rewriting with Type-valued relations and in Type contexts, using the Classes.CMorphisms library.

Added the boolean equality scheme command for decidable inductive types.

Added a Print Notation command.

Incompatibilities in name generation for Program obligations, eauto treatment of tactic failure levels, use of ident in notations, parsing of module expressions.

Standard library reorganization and deprecations.

Improve the treatment of standard library numbers by Extraction.

Endless creative story openers are now at your fingertips with Lyttony, a rather novel opening-sentence-generator for your Macintosh.

Lyttony creates millions of original and thought-provoking story-openers, useful for both teachers and students in creative writing classes, authors or writing clubs needing new inspiration, or just quick ideas for daily writing practice.

Lyttony does not require you to choose from confusing topic lists or to play 20-questions first. You are immediately provided ready-to-use opening lines, with no restrictions on their use. Feel free to copy them as-is into your next best-seller, or edit them to your liking.

Ask Lyttony as many times as you want - there's something for everyone. And if you find a great opener, bookmark it or share it with friends. You can always rewind back to your favorite bookmarked lines later.

Lyttony can send you a new line every day, and create customized stories with your name and your favorite color included in the text.

There are extra-purchase features as well. Lyttony can read the text aloud in your favorite computerized voice. Lyttony can also be synchronized with "Global StoryTime", so you can receive the same line, at the same time, with everyone else in the world.

Many more features listed here:

Personalized

You can add your name, type of pet, favorite color, etc. and Lyttony will weave these into its stories for you.

Customized

The Preferences/Settings page lets you choose a favorite color for the story text.

Bookmark & Rewind

Each opener has its own unique 16-character "Story-Code" which, if typed in, can instantly re-display that exact opener again, on anyone's "Lyttony" app. This feature lets you display the list of bookmarks, and choose a prior "bookmarked" opener to re-display. This is good for bookmarking/saving and revisiting prior funny ones, or sending the code to friends so they can jump to it it too.

Daily Dose

Do you want to receive a daily idea without even running the app? There's a setting for that! Just turn on "Daily Notifications", choose an hour of the day to have it delivered, and every day like clockwork, you will get a new story idea! You can read it in place in the notification center, or click it to have it displayed in the "Lyttony" app.

Global-Sync

Turn on Global-Sync mode and tap in to the "global story-cosmos." Everyone in the world can get the same story at the same time, no matter where they live. So if you and somebody in another country both choose "every hour", then all Lyttony apps will dish out identical stories together every hour. Turn on Global-Sync, set the same time-frequency as your friends, and enjoy synchronized story time. This is an extra-purchase feature.

Read Stories Aloud

Either automatically or manually speak your stories out loud in any of the installed (macOS or iOS) text-to-speech voices. This is an extra-purchase feature.

Share

Send your favorites to friends via e-mail/Facebook/chat/photos, or copy/paste them into your writing project.

Need some ideas for your next great story, or stuck trying to think of an opening line for a writing assignment, since "It was a dark and stormy night" is already taken? Let Lyttony provide the impetus to wet the quill, unblock the synapses and pour inspiration into your mind. Lyttony's lines are freely available for you to use for your own projects or publications.

Made all in-app-purchase features freely and fully available in app. ("Read to me" and "GlobalSync".)

Can save up to 10 story bookmarks. (2x more now!)

Major updates to the Intro screens, both user interface and the content. (Thanks Kat!)

Clicking the BOOKMARK button now also displays a quick-flash "Bookmarked" text to let user know it did something. (Thanks Kat!)

Clicking the SPEAK button while the text is busy speaking will now STOP the current speech. (Thanks Kat!)

Runs natively on Apple Silicon Macintosh.

More Personalization options added.

When you clear a user-typed Personalized item in the Preferences window, it now will auto-revert back to the factory default value, instead of a question mark. (Thanks Chris!)

New richer story text colors.

Classier more readable story font.

Much lighter (or darker in dark mode) background woodgrain desk under the story notepad paper. (Thanks Kat!)

The story title now randomly changes as well.

Nicer looking button display along bottom.

Many new stories added.

The author of the currently displayed story is now discoverable, if you look for it.

The originally shown paper background now is also remembered and recalled when you bookmark and rewind to a prior story.

NetLogo 6.3.0 - Modeling environment for simulating natural and social phenomena. (Free)

NetLogo is a programmable modeling environment for simulating natural and social phenomena. It is particularly well suited for modeling complex systems developing over time. Modelers can give instructions to hundreds or thousands of independent "agents" all operating concurrently. This makes it possible to explore the connection between the micro-level behavior of individuals and the macro-level patterns that emerge from the interaction of many individuals.

NetLogo lets students open simulations and "play" with them, exploring their behavior under various conditions. It is also an authoring environment which enables students, teachers and curriculum developers to create their own models. NetLogo is simple enough that students and teachers can easily run simulations or even build their own. And, it is advanced enough to serve as a powerful tool for researchers in many fields.

NetLogo has extensive documentation and tutorials. It also comes with a Models Library, which is a large collection of pre-written simulations that can be used and modified. These simulations address many content areas in the natural and social sciences, including biology and medicine, physics and chemistry, mathematics and computer science, and economics and social psychology. Several model-based inquiry curricula using NetLogo are currently under development.

Note: While the software is classified as free, it is actually donationware. Please consider making a donation to help support development.

Bug Fixes and Changes

The models library will correctly display when NetLogo is set to a language other than English.

The log4j library has been removed from NetLogo. Logging is now configured from the NetLogo preferences dialog. The output is in JSON text file format. See the Logging docs for more information.

BehaviorSpace experiments can now also be run from a terminal or command console using the NetLogo_Console app with NetLogo’s bundled Java by using the --headless flag. See the BehaviorSpace documentation for more information and examples. This avoids the need to install and configure a separate Java runtime to use the netlogo-headless.sh script, which remains bundled for those who require it.

BehaviorSpace output files are now chosen directly during run setup instead of separate prompts at the run start. This simplifies the setup process and resolves a bug where the runs would not occur on macOS.

The System Dynamics Modeler UI has some small improvements.

Fixed a bug where slider widgets would allow initial values outside of their range when changing the limits.

Better handle asymptotic values for tan with a proper error message.

NetLogo will now correctly handle running map or foreach when no lists are given.

When an anonymous task that uses let variables is displayed as a string it will now include those variable names.

Reporters used in concise task syntax no longer give the wrong result when used with fewer arguments than their default.

The models library location will be correctly set when using GUI scripts.

Behaviorsearch now sets a flag to alert extensions that they are being run without a UI so that extension code can adjust appropriately.

Extension Updates

GoGo: Improve newer GoGo board compatibility and improve the stability of the extension.

LevelSpace: Eliminate crashes when the controlling API is used to run NetLogo without a UI.

Profiler: The profiler:data results are now given in milliseconds instead of nanoseconds, matching the other primitives in the extension.

Python: Improvements in how the extension searches for the Python binaries when they aren’t specified via the configuration menu.

Vid: Update backing libraries to try to improve stability and usability on macOS and Windows.

Documentation Updates

Update the system requirements to include Windows 11.

Fixed a bad link to the extension API version 5 to 6 transition guide.

Added a FAQ entry on how to save random seeds from runs.
