The Memphis Zoo is bringing back one of it’s more popular events, Zoo Brew, for Labor Day Weekend! This event is strictly for those 21 and up, so no kiddies allowed! The event WILL sell out (as it has before) so be sure to get your tickets now! As of this writing, there were a few left so hurry!

The Zoo Brew is tomorrow, September 3rd at 7 pm; the perfect way to kick off Labor Day weekend! There will be great live music and delicious food for sale, along with soft drinks and wine. Although there’s no limit to the number of beers you can sample, servers will be pouring responsibly. There will be no animals available for viewing during the event. Last year there were over 100 brews to sample from, and this year promises to be even bigger!

Get Down at the Memphis Music & Heritage Festival!

Memphis knows that it loves it’s music and food festivals! With Labor Day weekend coming up, you know there had to be at least one festival that you could attend, and that’s the 23rd annual Memphis Music and Heritage Festival! The festival takes place this Saturday and Sunday, September 4 and 5, at The Center for Southern Folklore.

The Memphis Music and Heritage Festival is a prime event for music aficionado’s around the world. Memphis is sharing it’s gift of music, so it’s only right that you take advantage of this FREE offer. There are 30 + performers performing on the three outside stages and two stages inside the Center for Southern Folklore over the two days of the festival. So that means none stop music!

Every year, the Center for Southern Folklore salutes a musician at the Festival whose life and work have left their mark not only on the music of Memphis, but on the Center itself. This year, the festival celebrates Jim Dickinson. Jim Dickinson was a good friend of the Center for Southern Folklore and a perennial performer at the Memphis Music & Heritage Festival.

The great thing about Memphis music is that it’s so diverse. On the five stages at the festivals, you’ll bear witness to blues, jazz, gospel, rockabilly, soul and much more.  You’ll also be privy to cooking demonstrations, dance performances, storytellers, quilters, baseball players, musicians and more talking about their crafts in a relaxing setting, and a host of other activities.

Make sure that you come out! The festival is about 30 minutes from the Madison at Schilling Farms Apartments, so if you’re in the downtown Memphis area this weekend, you may want to check it out!

Adopt a Pet from the Humane Society of Memphis

This is all due to the adoption fee which is $90 for cats and $96 for dogs. The adoption fee is $75 for animals 5 years and older.

Why should you adopt from a Humane Society instead of a breeder? Well, for one, you’re giving an animal a second chance at life. Animals are found as strays or are abandoned by their owners time and time again, and just need a little love. That’s where you come in! Hey Redbirds fans! Craving a little action in Autozone Park with a little dazzle? Head out to Autozone Park on August 20 to see the Memphis Redbirds take on the Salt Lake City Bees at 7 pm. The theme of the night is centrally 80’s and you know that the Friday Night Fireworks will be in full effect.

Friday, August 20 is also college night. This means that students, teachers, and faculty can receive special group rates as long as they show ID. With it also being 80’s night, I’m slightly worried about whether people will dress up in the clothes that they wore in the 80’s that have since been hiding in the back of their closets. I’m hoping that 80’s music will be the focus; the 80’s fashion sense was a little scary.

Come early and stay late for entertainment in the plaza before and after the game presented by Memphis Sound Entertainment. Don’t forget about the fireworks display around 9 pm!

When it comes to quality produce and substantial savings, Farmers Markets win hands down every time. That being said, you should definitely check one out for yourself if you haven’t, and the Downtown Memphis Farmers Market going on this Saturday, August 14 is the perfect opportunity for  you to do so.

The Downtown Memphis Farmers Market takes place in Downtown Memphis (obviously) at Central Station, S. Front Street at GE Patterson in the Historic South Main District, and occur every Saturday through October. Admission and parking is free, and there is also pet sitting available so you don’t have to leave your furry babies at home. You know how much they enjoy those car rides!

At the Downtown Memphis Farmers Market, you get so much more  than produce. This Saturday, you’ll hear live music from Ritchie Schuman (7-8 am), Daniel Foster Johnston (8-10:30 am), Ken & Robyn Greene who will play from 10:30 am until 1 pm.

There’s also a kids craft corner for the kiddies. Around 9:30, Liane will be face-painting with the kiddies. Just to reiterate how there’s something for everyone at the farmers market, at 10:30 there will be a performance by Desert Rose Belly Dancers and Hoopers Troopers. There’s also a back to school special presentation on making a healthy school lunch.

Hey Madison at Schilling! As you all may know, Elvis Week 2010 kicks off today, August 10. I figured you’d be hearing enough about the King of Rock and Roll all week, so I’d decided to bring to your attention another band of musicians: Maroon 5. If you’re a fan, you’re in luck because they’re heading to the Mud Island Amphitheater on August 27th! If I were you, I’d get my tickets now!

For those that don’t know, Maroon 5 is an American rock band from Los Angeles that consists of vocalist and rhythm guitarist Adam Levine, keyboardist Jesse Carmichael, base guitarist Mickey Madden, guitarist James Valentine, and drummer Ryan Dusick. Since debuting in 2002, the band has sold over 10 million albums in the United States and nearly 15 million worldwide.

Tickets are on sale now at ticketmaster locations, and at the Mud Island Amphitheater. Get them now, as I’m sure they’ll sell out fast!

Classic Cars at the Antique Car Show!

Hey Madison at Schilling! Are you doing anything exciting this weekend? If you’re still looking for something to do and have some time on your hands, why not head out to Fuller Fest this Saturday, August 7th at T.O. Fuller State Park?

There is so much going on at Fuller Fest that it’s amazing that they fit everything into just one day! At Fuller Fest, you’ll be privy to a golf tournament, antique and classic car show, and gospel concert. The best part about all of this is that it’s free! You just can’t beat that.

Golf Tournament Ahead!

The golf tournament is everything that you would expect it to be, plenty of green and trophies to the winners of the following categories: longest drive, closest to the pin, 3 flights, and 3 places for flights. The number of flights will be determined by the number of entries. The fee is $220 per foursome, so that’s roughly $55 per person. The price includes golf cart, green fees, and box lunches. Registration begins at 8:30 am.

The antique and classic car show will be sure to turn more than a couple of heads. Since this is a competition, trophies will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place as well as Best in Show. The car show begins at noon and there is a $15 entry fee per vehicle. The judges will make their decisions based on the following categories: corvettes, antique trucks, classic cars, antique cars, and motorcycles.

The other main event at the festival will be the Gospel Concert. The MC will be James Chambers of WAVN -1240 AM radio. Participating in the concert are: Newsom Singers, Golden Keys, U-Turn, Supreme Harmonettes, Spiritual Excitement, Marvin Butler, and other local artists!

Lastly, there will be the normal festival staples such as food for purchase and arts and crafts for sale. Come out and enjoy the fun if you can!

Hey everyone! Are you ready for a night out on the town? Well if you are, then this Thursday night, you’ll have your opportunity! The first Thursday of every month is a fun-filled evening in your favorite Midtown hot spot: Cooper Young!

This Thursday, August 5th, gather up a group of your friends at the corner of Cooper Street and Young Avenue to enjoy live music by local Memphis solos and groups. If you take a walk around the neighborhood, you’ll happen upon discounts on everything from garter belts and sushi to Moon pizza and brass cymbals. I don’t exactly know why you would need brass cymbals unless you’re in a band of some sort, but I digress.

So, exactly what is the Cooper Young Night Out? Well, it’s when area independent business owners stay open later than usual and dish it up with all of you! Music can be heard at the Neighborhood Gazebo and other restaurants and shops around the area. There will also be drawings and giveaways if you’re interested.

The night out starts at 5 pm, antique and retail stores stay open until 9, and restaurants and bars stay open well past midnight. It’s sure to be a fun-filled night!
