Living in a family community similar to the one here at Madison at Schilling Farms, it’s typical to see kids being kids out on the playground or around our community area. While playing is fun, parents can enhance their activity even more by enrolling their child into an extracurricular program here in town!

Not only will your child remain active (and healthy) but can also hone a talent that they may enjoy! Being that today is National Ballet Day and Feb. 8th being the Boy Scouts Anniversary celebration, there’s never a better time than to sign your child up for America’s favorite past time!

What Can I Do or Make With Manteche Cheese? Good Questions

Q: I received a BelGioioso Manteche cheese as part of a gift basket. Manteche is a mild provolone cheese shaped around a block of unsalted butter while the cheese is still warm. Over time, the provolone infuses the butter and thus becomes a deliciously decadent dairy product. The product website suggests that one pair the Manteche with fruit and crackers. A quick web search turned up little to no other information about how others use the cheese, which leads me to wonder if The Kitchn’s ever-inventive staff and readers might be able to brainstorm some new uses. Korean Fried Chicken Wings Recipe for Super Bowl at Madison at Schilling

Whip up some Korean fried chicken wings for the party

Anyone still looking for recipes to include in their Super Bowl menus? If so, don’t worry about not having all your plans set; you still have time. Now that you’ve entered your final planning stage, it’s time to fill in the gaps and include another dish or two so that guests can leave with full bellies. Here is a recipe I found for Korean fried chicken wings. Click the link here for directions and for a list of ingredients, read on.

For the chicken

3 lbs chicken wings
5 cloves garlic, peeled
1 ½-inch piece fresh ginger, peeled

3 tbsp gochujang (Korean chili)
1 ½ tablespoons rice vinegar
1 tablespoon sesame oil
1 tablespoon honey

3 tbsp. soy sauce
Canola or peanut oil
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup cornstarch
1 1/3 cups water

Optional brine

1 lemon, washed and halved
4 1/2-inch piece fresh ginger, unpeeled and roughly chopped
2 tablespoons honey
4 cloves garlic, unpeeled
1 tablespoon black peppercorns
1/4 cup fine sea salt
8 cups water

My siblings and I were rescued from being put to sleep at the Memphis Animal Shelter. I am snuggly and the smallest of the litter. When we were fostered as little kittens, our nice foster mommy’s dog took to us and we all became BFFs! As you can see we tried to nurse from him but that didn’t work. The dog took good care of us, and if one of us cried, he would come and check on us to make sure we were OK! Pretty cool, huh? Siblings are Maize, Clementine, Bella, Johnny. Approx. DOB is 4/11/11.

And guess what–my brother Dick and my mom Eliza still live here too! It is good to have some family here. I am a loving and curious Manx cat with about a 1/2 to 3/4 of a tail I’d say. I was just born that way. My brother Dick has an even shorter tail. I will try and earn your affection, and hopefully a little canned food too. I LOVE to be brushed…I will rub my head on you and whatever may be near while you are brushing me. I love head skritches too. I will reach out to you with my paw when you stop petting me, or perhaps when you walk by and I want some pets. I am playful and a very nice cat if I do say so myself. I like to drink water out of the sink faucet…it is soooo much better than the water bowl, dontcha know? DOB is 12-21-00.

Go Green as Part of Your New Year’s Resolutions

Don't leave your car running for long periods of time.

If one of your new year’s resolutions is to be more green in 2012, there are so many ways to do that without changing your entire daily routine. Being more green often not only saves you money, but it also benefits the environment. Remember that even if it doesn’t feel like your recycled milk jug or reusable canvas shopping bag is doing much to save the environment, small changes really do make a big difference.

Here are a few simple ways that you can go green around your Madison at Schilling apartment and around town:

Stop idling your vehicle. Did you know that idling for more than 10 seconds actually wastes more gas than is needed to start your engine? It’s true. Idling not only wastes money but can also cause rougher wear on your vehicle.
Wash your clothes in cold water. 90 percent of your washing machine’s energy goes to heating and if you wash in cold water, you’re helping to save money and the planet. An added bonus of using cold water is that is won’t shrink or fade your clothes nearly as fast as hot water will.
Print on both sides of the paper. The average person uses 27 pounds of copy paper per year. Cut that number in half and put less in the landfill by printing double-sided.
