Pulling out my cheap(ish) white dinner plates for a party this weekend I was once again irked by the little grey scratch marks that have cropped up over the years. I am not sure if it is because these plates are cheap (thin enamel layer) or if my utensils are cheap and overly sharp. But whatever it is, it’s annoying. Putting wrap on 49ers’ playoff preparations

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The San Francisco 49ers wanted their pregame meal medium-rare.

“The analogy would be not to overcook it, like a burnt piece of meat,” coach Jim Harbaugh said Thursday.

Harbaugh sought the right combination of focus and looseness during the nearly two weeks his team has been preparing for the franchise’s first playoff game in nine years. He did not want players trying to do too much simply because the stakes would be higher when the playoff-tested New Orleans Saints visited Candlestick Park on Saturday.

Chiefs in no hurry to add coordinators

I had the opportunity to speak to new Kansas City coach Romeo Crennel on Thursday morning about an upcoming project. However, I was able to ask him about the team’s progress toward hiring offensive and defensive coordinators.

Crennel indicated that the offensive and defensive coordinator positions will likely not be filled in the immediate future. Crennel said he is in the early stages of the process and that the team needs to get some permission to talk to some candidates.

Payton endorses Kromer for Rams’ job

New Orleans coach Sean Payton confirmed reports Thursday that offensive line coach Aaron Kromer will interview for the job as head coach of the St. Louis Rams. Payton gave Kromer a ringing endorsement.

“He’s been a huge asset to us,’’ Payton said. “He came initially as a running backs coach and then moved to the offensive line, handles our run game and is a real good talent. Again, he’s a big reason for our success offensively.

NFC West penalty watch: Saints-49ers ref

One NFL head coach rated John Parry as the league’s best referee for a confidential survey back in 2008.

San Francisco 49ers fans might recall Parry for the disputed chop-block call he made against running back Frank Gore at Baltimore in Week 12. The flag wiped out a 75-yard touchdown pass to Ted Ginn Jr. in a game the 49ers lost, 16-6.

That call comes to mind this week after the NFL assigned Parry’s crew to work the 49ers’ divisional playoff game against New Orleans on Saturday.

Giants-Packers: Thursday injury report

A quick look at the second-to-last injury report of the week:

New York Giants: Two players were added to the report: Cornerback Corey Webster (hamstring) and safety Deon Grant (quadriceps). Both were limited Thursday in practice. Running back D.J. Ware (concussion) returned to practice. Running back Ahmad Bradshaw (foot/back) and linebacker Mark Herzlich (ankle) both sat out for a second consecutive day.

Green Bay Packers: All but two players were full participants in a practice held indoors because of snow and wind.
