Catch Great Summer Movies at Memphis’ Orpheum Theater

One more thing to love about living in our apartments in downtown Memphis, TN is the Summer Movie Series at the Orpheum. This is a favorite way for locals and visitors to spend a beautiful summer evening. Running for the months of June through September, the series always incorporates a good mix of classics and modern movies that everyone will enjoy.

The Orpheum is the place for entertainment in Memphis.

Though the 2012 movie line-up has not been released, some films from previous years include:

The Rocky Horror Picture Show
Casablanca
E.T

The Orpheum is one of the most spectacular venues in the region. It is easy to find, located at 203 S. Main Street, and close to many excellent restaurants and bars.

Catch the big one at the Inaugural Bass Classic!

Aspiring anglers in the Memphis area will get to test out their fishing skills during the Inaugural Shelby Farms Bass Classic which takes place over the weekend of June 23-24, 2012 on Pickwick Lake. This “pick a partner” style event will benefit Shelby Farms Park and the Greenline.Fishing enthusiasts of every level will have a chance to win exciting giveaways as well as cash prizes including $500 for the Saturday Big Bass, $500 for the Sunday Big Bass and $10,000 to the lucky person who lands in first place. One of the cool prizes is Parent and Child Fishing Trip with Bill Dance donated by BassPro Shops.

Registration for the Inaugural Shelby Farms Bass Classic is underway now. Visit the Shelby Farm Parks website for sign-up information and tournament rules. There is also a mandatory meeting and catfish dinner for participants at the Pickwick Inn, which is $10 for adults and $5 for children.

Soojin Kang’s Dressed Furniture Project

South Korean designer Soojin Kang, a graduate of Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, created her Dressed Furniture project as a way to strike a “balance between emotional connections and commercial result by creating unique furniture and objects.” Her handcrafted furniture pieces make use of materials and colors to “tell stories through her designs.” Kang places a strong emphasis on the importance of hand made quality goods that are anything but disposable in an effort to work against the trend of cheaply made factory furniture. Time to Start Planning for Father’s Day in Memphis!

Treat your dad to a good old fashioned baseball game for Father's Day.

Looking for Father’s Day events to make the occasion special is a challenge for family members. Fortunately if your near apartments in downtown Memphis TN, there are a number of options to make dad happy.

Father’s Day Zoo Snooze (June 17) is an overnight experience for the whole family. The centerpiece of the night is a moonlight safari of the Memphis Zoo with fun games and some late-night nibbles included. In addition, participants will wake up to breakfast and a “Zoo Snooze” t-shirt.

If dad is more of a sports fan, the Memphis Roller Derby is featuring a double header starting at 5pm on June 18. The Hustlin’ Rollers takes on Jacksonville, FL in the first bout while Angels of Death opposes Women of Mass Destruction closes the night.

If your father enjoys baseball, the Memphis Redbirds and Nashville Sounds meet on June 18 and 19. For each game, there is more than competitive baseball being played. On the 18^th, musician John Angotti will perform pre-game while the night will end with a fireworks show. The 19^th will feature a chance for you to have your Field of Dreams moment. You can play catch with dad after the game.

We all know that Memphis is one of the best cities in the United States for music, both legendary and modern. One of the best music venues in Memphis is located less than 10 minutes from our apartment community at Madison Humphreys Center and that is Mud Island River Park. There are always great shows to be seen at Mud Island and this spring and summer are not exception. Here’s a brief rundown of the 2012 line-up so far:

May 19 – Wilco – Tickets $42 – Wilco is an American alternative indie rock band based in Chicago, Illinois with a slight country sound. Wilco has been dubbed by some as the “American Radiohead” because of their variety of sounds.
June 15 & 16 – Funk Fest Featuring Charlie Wilson, Erykah Badu, Keith Sweat and more. Tickets start at $45.
June 22 – Norah Jones – Tickets starting at $48.50 – Norah Jones is a Grammy award winning American singer-songwriter who has platinum and diamond status albums as well as many collaborations and a soft, yet powerfully intoxicating voice.
July 15 – James Taylor and band – Tickets starting at $49.50 – James Taylor is a five-time Grammy award winning singer-songwriter and guitarist with such hits at “Mexico”, “Fire and Rain” and “You’ve Got a Friend”.

Although it’s important to celebrate different cultures all year round, there is one particular day of the year when many people celebrate the heritage and culture of Mexico and that is Cinco de Mayo. Spanish for the “Fifth of May”, Cinco de Mayo is a time to eat, drink, and enjoy Mexican music and culture.

One place that we recommend visiting, that is also less than a mile from our Madison Humphreys Center community is Rio Loco. Rio Loco is located at 117 Union Ave, Memphis, TN and is open from 11am to 10pm Sunday through Thursday and 11am to 10:30pm Fridays and Saturdays. Here you can enjoy a number of authentic Mexican dishes like burritos, chimichangas, fajitas and more at a great value. There are also daily lunch and dinner specials for you to take advantage of.

If you want a taste of Mexico without leaving the country, head on down to Rio Loco!

The earth has many wonders hidden inside of it!

Now that we’ve covered simple ways to go green in your Madison Humphreys Center apartment just in time for Earth Day, we’d also like to talk about a fun way for you to learn more about the earth and what’s inside of it.

Introducing “The Earth Wide Open“, Memphis’ own Mineral, Fossil and Jewelry Show taking place April 27-29 at the Agricenter located at Shelby Farms Park. This event will feature a wide array of exhibitors, educational displays and exhibits, and even activities for kids. Bring the whole family to this event, because your little ones can have fun while learning about the earth in the Rockzone which features pet rock painting, panning for crystals, geode bowling, photos with dinosaurs, and a gem dig where kids can search for gems, fossils, crystals and more!

You can also find unique jewelry from dealers from across the nation and do a little shopping while you’re there. Mark your calendar for this one-of-a-kind event happening at the end of April!

ABOUT BRISTERFEST:

In 2011, a new Memphis tradition was born.

Brister Street Productions created Brister Street Music Festival, a.k.a. Bristerfest, to enhance and celebrate the local music culture. Bristerfest occurs at the legendary outdoor Shell in Overton Park, where Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, The Grateful Dead and the Allman Brothers, among others, have performed.

In 2012 and beyond, Bristerfest seeks to enhance the local community and environment by serving as an avenue for artistic ventures and donating a portion of the proceeds from ticket sales to GrowMemphis, a 501(c)3 Non-Profit, for the development of new urban gardens.
