I always wanted to learn a new language in my life. Everybody should at least learn one new language in their life. Learning a new language will help you to understand different culture and you can explore different parts of the world and be knowledgeable and know about life. It definitely improves your life skills and you will enjoy travelling. You can learn any language if you start talking with the people in their native language. But to start with, you should know few words like thank you, good bye, hello etc. and phrases of that language. Here is a quick guide to get started. Here are few best websites to learn new language.

Free Websites to Learn a New Language

Surface Languages –

Surface language is an online language learning suite that has total of 39 languages. More languages are updated monthly. Select a language and start learning basic words, phrases, numbers, colors etc. English – foreign language – audio. This is the format used in the website. Each word or phrase has an audio button to play and learn the pronunciation.

For example: if you want to learn Hindi (which is widely used language here in India), click the language which is displayed on the sidebar of homepage. Then you can learn basic words, numbers, colors etc. When you’re done with basic lessons, use flash card to test your skill. That’s done, you jump to small conversation phrases like “have you visited my country”, this is my first visit etc. Small conversation phrases will help you to learn the language quick and you can use this in conversation.

I just love this website.

iMendi –

iMendi covers 8 languages such as Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French, German, Russian, Arabic and Czech. Each language has 12 courses that cover all the basic needs. How to get started? First select your language. If you’re English, select English and select the language which you want to learn. For example: select Spanish. It shows you the course lessons English-Spanish.

It gives you two options. To learn the basic words first and then take a test on it. As said, it has 12 lessons starting from basic conversation, colors & numbers, days, time, food and drink, adjectives, transportation, health, shopping, sports, hobbies, animals etc. You can select each lesson, learn the words first and then take the test.

Unfortunately it doesn’t have audio clips for each word. So, beginners will find it difficult to learn how to pronounce those words.

Duolingo –

Duolingo is a complete language learning suite where it supports Spanish, French, Portuguese, Italian, German and more. You need to register it for free to start using it. Select the language and it shows your skill tree where you going to start from the basics. Duolingo interface has fun elements. Once you start learning, based on your progress you will be given points and virtual badges.

Forvo –

Forvo is one of the best websites in 2013 awarded by TIME magazine. It is your pronunciation guide with more than 10 million words in 306 languages. You can be a contributor, listen and learn with Forvo. The website has thousands of words pronounced audio clips by native speakers. Completely user generated content.

BBC Languages –

Similar to iMendi and surface languages, BBC has online learning suite that supports more than 40 languages where you can learn right from basics. It has course lessons, audio and video, vocabulary activities and tests too. Check out this sample link to learn French basics.

These are my five favorite websites to learn a new foreign language. If you have any other website that you have tried out to learn a new language, use comments section below to enter your thoughts.

Earlier days when I bought my first android phone, I used to transfer files such as photos, music, videos from my PC to android phone through data cable.

There is a firm increase in number of devices, platforms and browsers that your site needs to work. Responsive design is a next generation web design that most of the blogs and websites use. The main thing in responsive design is ‘One site for every screen’. The web design should fit all the screen sizes from small, medium and large devices. One of the finest examples of responsive web design which you can look up is Barack Obama’s website. His 2012 campaign website is built on responsive web design. If you consider about browser support, performance, clear layout that fits the entire screen sizes, go for responsive web layout.

So what are some of the ways to check whether your website or your favorite website has a responsive web design? Here I list few tools where you can check responsive websites online. Just enter the website URL and set the screen size to show the website in specific layout. You can test out your web design in various screen sizes like iPhone, 13 inch mac, 15 inch laptop, 21 inch desktop monitor, 7 inch tablet etc.

What people are looking for? Mobile users are firmly increasing and people want to view/read their favorite websites from the computer in office, through smartphone/tablets during travel or at home. So if your site isn’t optimized to be viewed from any device, change to responsive theme web design that makes your website adaptable to any screen size.

As a webmaster/blogger you need to check if your site is responsive, here are few tools that let you check it very easily.

Tools to Test Responsive Web Design

Simures

Simures (Sim u Res) is my favorite tool. It is so minimalistic and you need to enter just 3 elements. The height, width and your website URL. Once you’ve entered, it shows your web page in specified screen resolutions. You can set to any width and height to check how your website looks at certain resolutions.

Piresponsive

A responsive design tool to see how your website looks on the latest devices. It has options to view your website like in desktop, tablet devices such as iPad, Nexus 7, kindle fire, and almost all top end smartphone devices like Galaxy S3, S4, iPhone 5, Nexus 4, Lumia 920, Xperia Z etc. You can even rotate your screen when viewing from tablet devices. You can check how your website looks when you hold your tab or smartphone horizontally.

Screenfly

Screenfly is my second favorite tool to check websites on different screen resolutions. It has similar options to check your website on different devices (the latest ones) and what’s special is that you can allow the website to scroll. So you can navigate pages inside the specified screen resolution. You can even set custom screen size and apply changes to check the website.

Test Size

Test size isn’t exactly testing your pages on smartphone and tablet devices. Instead it shows set of predefined screen resolutions that most of the netbooks, desktop machines people use. If you need, you can check your website on custom screen sizes. Open in popup allows you to view website in exact screen resolution in a popup window, which gives you an idea of how exactly it will look in a browser.

Another similar tool is Viewlike.us.

This set of tools completely shows your website on different screen resolutions. But if you want to check your website on different browsers (cross browser testing), then find this article Test your website on multiple browsers and operating system online.

As a webmaster you should be aware of optimizing your web pages to increase speed and performance. The foremost is optimizing images on your WordPress blog that leads to increase in speed and performance of the website. Responsive WordPress design is the latest trend. Most of the websites traffic started to come from mobile and tablet devices. Optimizing your website to desktop users alone is not going to help in future. Also talking about image optimization, you can use few WordPress plugins that really help you in image optimization. Some plugins optimize your images for better SEO, by adding alt tags to images, keywords etc. You can add few WordPress plugins to support image optimization for improving website’s performance.

Here I review about best image optimization plugin for WordPress platform. It does better image optimization for web pages. As you all, SEO image optimization best practices include alt tags, keyword rich file name etc. For optimizing your website image files, here are few WordPress plugins. If you’re a WordPress beginner, read our 4 best recommended WordPress plugins for beginners that include WP super cache, all in one SEO and few more.

But before trying out these WordPress plugins, you should read our guide on optimizing your website for Speed and Performance. This guide includes all the points that a webmaster should know of.

WP Image Optimization Plugins

One of the main reasons for a slow website is the actual load the website weighs. The images that you add to your website constitutes to its speed. The more you reduce the image size, the faster the web pages load.

Resize Images after upload

This plugin is fantastic. If you’re uploading your images from digital camera that are huge in size, this plugin reduces the work of resizing it. This plugin resizes uploaded images to within a given maximum width and height after uploading, discarding the original uploaded file in the process. It eliminates your work process of resizing, saving server space etc. Large images consume huge server space and this plugin reduces size of uploaded image at point of upload then position the image to the exact size of your theme and finally deletes the original image file which is uploaded.

Similar plugin is Imsanity, it automatically resizes huge image uploads. If you’re running a multi author blog and your contributors are uploading large images, you can set the image width and height, the plugin automatically resizes all the images and uploads them. You can even batch resize images inside the plugin options.

Next Gen Gallery Plugin

If you’re trying to embed a bunch of photos to your blog, then WP gallery plugin can help you out. NextGen Gallery plugin is one of the popular gallery plugins on WordPress platform with 7 million downloads. I’ve been using picasa embed plugin that embeds the picasa album and shows the image with help of jquery to quickly load and serve images on the website. Since I shifted to NextGen, there are no regrets.

You can upload images and manage them effectively. You can rearrange, sort images and gives you option to select how you need the images to be displayed. You can either display in a slideshow format or thumbnail format. Once the visitor clicks the image thumbnail, full view will be displayed in lightbox effects and more. Slideshow format gives you option to select transition style, speed, image order, captions and more.

Alternative to NextGen gallery plugin is Grand Flash Gallery WordPress plugin. Grand flash plugin can easily embed image galleries, video, mp3 player, audio files, banners etc. It is mobile friendly and SEO optimized.

If you’re using NextGen or Grand Flash gallery plugin to embed bunch of images, you can try out Ewww Image Optimizer that automatically and losslessly optimize your images as you upload them to your blog. It can also optimize the images that you have already uploaded in the past. It uses jpegtran, opting, pngout and gifsicle image tools to optimize images. It supports both nextgen and grand flash plugins. Using this plugin, your pages will load faster, better image optimization and easy for backup and finally less bandwidth usage.

If you’re already using any image optimization plugin, do share it with us.

This Bluetooth low energy device called Button TrackR can track and find items that we normally misplace in our daily activities. Did you know the average adult misplaces 200,000 items in their life time? That’s 100 hours a year spent on looking for lost stuff. What items do we misplace often? Our car keys, house keys, glasses, wallet, handbags, TV remotes, etc. Where do we misplace them? Mostly at bar, coffee shops or restaurants. How to avoid this? We should be equipped with the latest technology that can save us time and stress. If you already have a smartphone like iPhone, then having a small gadget like Button TrackR can eliminate the common frustration involved in misplacing an item and searching for it.

Button TrackR is a small coin-sized device that is made up of Bluetooth low energy technology or Bluetooth Smart that consumes less energy and can be fitted across any small device. So this button shaped device which people can stick to commonly misplaced belongings to track with a powerful, cloud-based application on their iPhone.

Before I jump into explaining in detail, I will tell you how this works. You stick this button trackr on any item you want such as tv remote, wallet, bicycle, etc. Install an iPhone app called Item TrackR. The app runs on your phone and wirelessly connects to the Button TrackR. If the item is left behind, both the phone and device will notify the user before the items is lost. Similar to StickNFind Bluetooth sticker that we reviewed sometime back.

So at what situations can you use Button TrackR? You can stick it on your car keys, wallet, stick on your cats, dogs, pets etc. If you’re travelling on flights, you can stick on your luggage. Over 30,000,000 bags are lost on flights annually. 3000 bags are lost every hour. So these are some of the use cases for Button TrackR.

The app can then guide the user to within five feet of this exact location using GPS and a short distance Hot & Cold finding system within the app. Users can also locate their lost items by causing the Button TrackR device to ring. The system is completely bidirectional which means if the user can’t find their phone (and the phone is on silent), the user can press a Button on the TrackR device and cause the phone to ring.

Most tracking devices stop there, but thanks to our Crowd-Sourced Tracking Technology, users can pinpoint the location of their misplaced valuables. The device broadcasts a unique signal detectable by all phones of Button TrackR users. When another Button TrackR user comes into the proximity of a lost item, a message is sent to our cloud application and seamlessly updates you with your item’s latest location.

You can track 10 devices simultaneously from a single phone or tablet. The devices have a range of 100ft. Once the user is separated from the device by more than 100ft, the phone takes a GPS snapshot of where the device was left behind. Then uses Crowd sourced finding so users can locate their items from anywhere on the planet.

As of now the Button TrackR works with iPhone using Item TrackR app. Comign soon on Android Google play store. But if you have Samsung Galaxy S3, S4, Note 2 you can use this app.

Note: What I liked about the device is, it is bidirectional. If you can’t find your phone, press the Button TrackR device to cause your phone to ring… even if it is on silent mode. You can also ring the lost item from the app apart from locating them using map or GPS snapshot later with the help of crowd sourcing tracking technology.

The product is available on IndieGoGo for Pre-Order at ButtonTrackR

If you’re facing this problem on Android 4.1 or Android 4.2.2 where the official Gmail app for android is not working or syncing emails automatically? I recently faced this issue where none of my emails synced properly on my Nexus. The Gmail android app not notifying new emails doesn’t sync at all. When troubleshooting it, I learned many ways to make it work again. Here are some methods to make your Gmail app on android to sync emails.

The first thing that you should check is whether you have an active internet connection. If you’re on Wi-Fi make sure it works properly. If you’re using cellular data connection, then make sure they work properly just by opening few web pages from your browser.

Adding to it makes sure your device is not in Airplane mode and has a working signal. The main problem that I found was Gmail app isn’t sync all my emails at the right time. So turn off and on the sync option. Also make sure you have enabled the auto sync option is checked. You can go to settings > accounts and sync and checkbox for Auto sync is checked.

If still the problem exists, turn off the device or restart the device. Hold power or end call button and then select power off. Again few minutes, switch on the device again. Your device will re-sync with the server after restarting. If still the problem exists, it is either because of low memory notification or problem with your account and password.

If your phone/android device internal memory is low, Gmail doesn’t automatically sync emails from the server. Check the notification about low memory. If you find any of those sorts, you need to free up some internal memory space by deleting unused applications in order for Gmail to sync.

Also there is greater chance of password error. If you have notification regarding sign in or password error, you should make sure your account information is correct in order for Gmail to sync. If you’ve signed up for 2 step verification, you need to enter application specific password for your Gmail app to sync emails with server.

Sometimes there are fewer chances for Gmail server issues. Most of the time Gmail is up, sometimes a problem with the main Gmail servers can prevent the Gmail app from auto syncing. If nothing works out, you need to clear data of Gmail app. Under settings > manage apps > Gmail, open and clear cache and clear data. By doing this you will result in loss of any saved, unsent, draft emails, signature etc.

Wolfram alpha is the world’s first computational knowledge engine which is brilliant and uses expert level algorithms to answer questions. If you haven’t tried out Wolfram alpha, go to Wolfram Alpha website. After Wikipedia, Wolfram alpha is the best website which is useful for everyone. I stumbled across a useful Wolfram alpha tool that joins hands with Facebook to bring out Personal analysis tool for Facebook profiles. You can get your Facebook profile analytics with the help of Wolfram alpha engine.

Go to Wolfram Alpha and enter “Facebook report”) without quotes into the text bar and start with analysis part directly. You can even click this link directly to get Facebook analysis button to start with.

Once you connect your Facebook profile with Wolfram alpha account, it produces a report of your profile. The report brings out personal information and analysis on your social data computed by wolfram alpha engine.

So what information it displays? It clusters your friends; find where in the world are your friends, where do they live, which countries etc. This shows your networks global reach. It shows how popular are your friends, what do you talk, your conversations, frequently used words, the time when you use Facebook, when are you most active, what kind of friends you have, their ages, structure of your friends network, how are your friends tied together, your most popular photos, etc.

I just tried this by connecting my Facebook profile with Wolfram alpha. I authorized my Facebook profile and it asked me to create a wolfram alpha account which is free. With just two steps, I created one account on Wolfram alpha (which will be later useful when using Wolfram alpha engine, because you save your history, favorite search queries and more features for registered users).

Before analyzing about the Wolfram alpha Facebook tool, some more points – It doesn’t misuse any of your information. It maintains highest standards of privacy protection. Your profile personal analysis reports aren’t published anywhere. It is private to you. If you wish, you can publish results. This tool shows only personal analysis for Facebook profiles only and not for Facebook pages.

First it shows all the personal information from your profile like your name, vanity username, birthday, age, home town, residence etc. Everything is clickable, so you can click each item to view its own statistics. For example: if you click on the hometown, it shows all the details about it.

The second part it displays your recent activities. The total number of status messages, links posted and photos uploaded. It shows a graphical chart with the count numbers and ratio. It also displays weekly distribution and the time posted. If you mouseover, you can find the breakdown details.

The third part it analyzes the post length, words used and frequencies etc. The number of characters used in status messages, word frequencies. It shows a word cloud of significant words used.

The fourth part it shows the most liked posts, most commented on post, top commentators, top post sharers etc.

The other stuff it displays include places checked in, weekly app activity, weekly interface activity, the most liked photos, the most commented photos, etc.

The major part comes here; it shows the friends’ gender, relationship statuses and friends’ ages. From this chart you can easily find how many male, female friends, how many are single, in relationship, married and also the average age of your friends. It shows 5 friends who are the eldest and 5 friends who are youngest.

It also shows friends location, country wise and number of friends too. Also it shows friends’ local times, birthdays, most common friend names, most mutual friends, friends with most friends, etc.

Dropbox which was started in 2006 has turned into a rising leader in cloud storage with faster, easier access to files and safer away to store and share data’s. Also Dropbox is one of the hottest tech startups with less than 200 employees and 50 Million+ users. More professionals and digital enthusiasts use Dropbox on their daily life for day to day activities. To your surprise, rapper Will.i.am (Black Eyed Peas) used Dropbox to collaborate with producer David Guetta on the hit song “I Got a Feeling”.

Cloud storage helps in many practical uses to store and share data online. You may use it for backup, sharing files with your friends. But actually cloud storage services can be used for many other activities. I just use my Dropbox cloud storage service creatively for 3 cases.

Send Pocket Items to Dropbox and Save as PDF

If you’re using Pocket app to save articles to read it later, with the help of IFTTT (If this then that) you can send all your pocket articles to Dropbox and save them as PDF file for later read. Pocket is one of the best inventions for me. It allows you to save any article for later read. You can simply use its web browser extension or mobile app to instantly send web links to read it later. All your articles are stored in pocket account that can be read later.

With the help of IFTTT recipe you can now send all your pocket articles to Dropbox as PDF file. If you’re hearing about IFTTT for the first time, you should read our articles on IFTTT.

Here are few recipes from IFTTT that can send all your Pocket links to Dropbox as PDF files. With the help of Dropbox, you can retrieve the PDF from anywhere and read it.

If you’re not using Dropbox, here are few more IFTTT recipes for doing the similar task with Box, Google drive and Ever note.

I use this IFTTT recipe many times whenever I find articles which are more than 2500 words and too lengthy to read. I just push it to pocket. Later it sends it to Dropbox as PDF file.

Writebox – Dropbox text editor

Open notepad, write something and save it. It will save the notepad file in your local hard disk. Similar concept, open Writebox app on your web browser, write something and save it automatically to your Dropbox folder.

Writebox is a simple text editor for Dropbox that helps you to concentrate on distraction free writing and sharing your writing text on your computers and devices. You can open Writebox and hit F11 on your browser to get full screen for distraction free writing. You can even load text data from Dropbox folder.

You need to authorize your Dropbox account with Writebox, so that you can sync all the text data files from your Dropbox account. Your text is automatically saved on your local with every key type. You can use Ctrl+S for shortcut to sync with Dropbox.

Get Email Attachments to Dropbox

This is something similar to send attachments directly to Google drive concept. Authorize your Dropbox account with Send to Dropbox. You will get your unique email address – For example: abc@sendtodropbox.com. So any email attachment send to that unique address will be backed up to Dropbox attachment folder.

If you’re using Gmail as your primary email address, then you can setup email forwarding in your Gmail Options. Under the address settings, you can add email forwarding. Verify the email address and there you go!

If you’ve some more creative ways to use Dropbox, do let us know through comments!

Tackling stains from clothes is not a big task. One simple tip I read long back is using vinegar as stain remover. Whether it is blood, ink, oil, grease, wine, sweat stains etc. vinegar can remove it easily. Sometimes our photo has stains, blemishes and acnes on skin/face. How to remove those acnes on skin? I stumbled upon a free tool Photo Blemish remover that does the job.

Photo Blemish Remover allows you to quickly remove stains and other imperfections in your photos. Generally our old photos with stains can be easily removed with this tool. I tried with different photos and stains, it removes them perfectly.

How to use this free tool?

Install, open and load your photo

Simply adjust the brush size and choose the exact point of place where you need to remove stains.

Point to the area and click your mouse. It removes stains, blemishes and acnes of marks on the skin.

If you need to remove stains from small area, use zoom functions and reduce the size of the brush to get accurate pixel.

How does the tool work?

If you have used Photoshop clone stamp tool, similar process takes place here. It automatically replaces the sampled pixels in the image to match the surrounding area.

Form the image or pattern, it matches the texture, lighting and shading of the sampled pixels and automatically replaces the pixels. Unlike Photoshop clone stamp tool it doesn’t ask you to specify a sample spot.

Download Photo Blemish Remover

If you want to work the same process of removing stains from photos using Photoshop, here is the guide.

Open Photoshop (am using CS5 here)

Load your image

Select clone stamp tool

Select a specific spot to match your pixels

Hold ALT button and click on the specific area.

Now brush the area which you want to replace pixels.

YouTube photo slideshow allows you to create audio slideshow by adding your photos. You can upload it finally to your account as photo slideshow video. Previously we had written a lot of photo slideshow maker online and desktop freeware’s. This online photo slideshow maker creates an easy photo gallery but with no background music.

10 Ways to create music slideshows online

This tutorial will help you to learn how to create a photo slideshow using YouTube’s inbuilt photo slideshow maker tool. There isn’t any limit except 15 minutes limit for the length of the video. You can configure each image to specify the length of time it should be displayed once you upload all the images. It is simple as that. You upload your images, add annotations, set time frame for each image to appear, add background music and there you go! Your photo slideshow is ready to upload on YouTube.

If you’re looking for desktop software to do the similar job, check Slideshow to AVI freeware. You can also try slideshow video with ken burns effect. Photo Film strip freeware adds ken burns effect to your slideshows.

Foto 2 AVI & Ezvid are similar softwares for photo slideshow makers.

YouTube Photo Slideshow maker tutorial

Login to YouTube account.

Click Upload > Photo Slideshow.

You can select photos from your Picasa album / Google+ or upload photos from your PC

I uploaded some sample pictures from my computer

You can drag and drop images into the order in which you want them to appear

Now select sound audio track for the photo slideshow

Select the slides display duration and transition effect between photo slides.

Enter title, description, select thumbnail for the video

That’s it! Your video is now uploaded to your YouTube account.

If you want to add more effects, in 7th point you can switch to advanced editor where you can add more effects to your photo slideshows.

Once the video is uploaded, you can use YouTube editor to add annotations to each frame of your video. You can even display the time length of each annotation to appear on the video.

Here is my sample video

I hope this tutorial will help you to create photo slideshows easily on YouTube. Unfortunately, you cannot add your own audio to your photo slideshows. The YouTube has audio database of over 150,000 songs to select from. You can search for your favorite song and add them as background audio to your photo slideshows.

Whatsapp is the king of messaging system that includes texts, images, audio, video sharing etc. There isn’t official Whatsapp client for PC desktop, but you can install the Whatsapp mobile app using Bluestacks app on your computer. You can send and receive Whatsapp messages from your computer using bluestacks app. Even you can install Whatsapp on tablet devices like Nexus 7 Wi-Fi only that doesn’t support SIM cards, mobile networks. The happy news is you don’t need any third party app to install Whatsapp on PC. There is an open source Whatsapp desktop client under development. This tool can be installed by anyone on their PC to chat using Whatsapp. The program is completely open source, so any one can see the code or participate to develop more features.

Whatsapp desktop app download

Whatsapp desktop client for Windows is an open source tool that allows you to chat on Whatsapp from PC and from your smartphones. At this moment, Whatsapp is only available for mobile platform such as iOS and android. The goal of this project is to create a working Whatsapp client for desktop computer.

Currently the Whatsapp desktop client is in beta stage. As it is an open source tool, the developers are seeking help on the project to take it to the next level. As of now, the desktop client is not yet functional, but only testing the authentication (as you can see the screenshot above).

There are lot of Whatsapp alternatives and instant messengers on the web; the funny thing is you don’t have the user base of Whatsapp. The number of friends using Whatsapp to other IM clients is too low when compared. After Google talk and Facebook chat, Whatsapp is in third position.

So calling out developers and open source enthusiasts who’re keen in taking this Whatsapp desktop client to the next level, find the code here and it uses C# as primary language.

Few days back I wrote about Whatsapp Invisible mode – you can download the android app that allows you to go invisible on Whatsapp and appear offline to your Whatsapp friends. Cool isn’t it? Go to this link to read it.
