Tomorrow last Fun & Speed Meeting for 2009

The last Fun & Speed Meeting (FSM) of the year will take place at Strand Horst, the Netherlands. This windsurfing event is all about getting your windsurfing skill level up. But it’s also about having fun and help each other to improve.

That GPS Speedsurfing is getting popular is shown by the more than 70 participants (it’s not possible to register anymore). And best of all, the weather forecast is great so don’t forget your GPS device.

Hypothermia, what`s that?

Hypothermia is a serious danger you can be exposed to as a surfer. In the Netherlands the risk of hypothermia occurs in all seasons, even in the summer. In this article I will address:

What is hypothermia?

Hypothermia occurs when your body temperature is too low. Normally your body temperature is around 37 degrees Celsius (98.6 degrees Fahrenheit), and your body can only function well at this normal body temperature. When it drops below 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit) signs of hypothermia can appear.

How can you recognise hypothermia?

The danger of hypothermia is that you can hardly recognize the signs. You become pale, start to shiver and feel very tired. Your movements will become less coordinated and laboured. This obviously does not improve your ability to surf back to land or climb back on your board when you feel the first signs.

How to prevent hypothermia?

Good preparation to the circumstances is the best way to prevent hypothermia. Inform yourself about the weather conditions and choose the type of wetsuit to match these weather conditions. Loss of body heat is most prominent through your head. A neoprene hat of headband can prevent this. It can also help to keep your surf material in good condition to prevent calamities. Also a good physical condition can help to prevent exhaustion.

It’s useful to know the fastest way out of the water at your surf spot, to shorten the time in the water as much as possible. If you’re surfing on your own, tell your friends where the spot is. Of course you can also go surfing with a buddy, so you can help each other.

How do you treat hypothermia?

When hypothermia is severe, you will not be able to treat yourself. One of your surf buddies will have to warm you up. In severe cases call the national alarm number (Europe: 112, USA: 911).

Water conducts heat much better than air, so be sure to dry a hypothermic person quickly. It is very important to warm a surfer gradually, because quick deterioration can occur if you warm up too quickly.

Warm drinks can help a surfer to warm up and they give energy. Never give a windsurfer alcohol, because it will only aggravate the hypothermia.

Conclusion

Be prepared on the circumstances when you hit the water. This way you can enjoy the windsurfing sport even in cold conditions.

Surf Festival Makkum 2009

A beautiful windsurfing event is marked on the calendar on 9 -11 October. An event with a very exiting program.

What can you expect at the European Surf Festival? Competitions, Seminars, 2010 windsurfing equipment and famous windsurfers!

Day 1 European Surf Festival

On Friday you can compete with other speed surfers in the F2 Speed Challenge. Naturally there will be a great price. The fastest windsurfer will win a brand new F2 Missle. You can register over here.

It’s absolutely no problem If you don’t feel like racing. Several big windsurfing brands will present the new windsurfing equipment for 2010. Neilpryde/JP organizes a rig and trim seminar.

It’s not all listening and watching because there will be a lot of testing equipment. Windsurfing is about being on the water and having fun! Identification is most of the time needed to get the testing equipment, so don’t forget your ID.

Famous windsurfers like Dennis Littel, Dirk Doppenberg, Andre Paskowski, Marcilio “Brawzinho” Brown (on the left) and Kauli Seadi will be at the festival. In the evening you can share stories in Peter’s Bar.

Day 2 European Surf Festival

Day 2 will be similar to day 1. Besides the F2 Speed Challenge the Dutch Open Championships will be held. The 2010 windsurfing test equipment is still at your disposal.

Surfschool Funsport Makkum organizes introductory lessons for everybody interested in the windsurfing sport. So bring your “not windsurfing friends” along.

Andre will be interviewed about his new windsurfing video Four Dimensions. The latest windsurf video produced Andre. Four Dimensions presents the best wave, jump and Freestyle you can imagine. The film crew has already filmed on the legendary Capo Verde islands and Maui.

In the evening it’s time for partying at Peter’s bar and the screening of ”Four Dimensions”.

Day 3 European Surf Festival

Sunday will also give you more time to meet your favorite windsurfers and test new windsurfing equipment. The event will close with several award ceremonies. After the ceremonies it’s time to head home.

I’m back from a great holiday. Lake Garda is really great. Good food and drinks, beautiful scenery, and fabulous weather.

The last few weeks a lot has been happening in the windsurfing world. The speedworldcup took place, the PWA is in an advanced state and the Mission 2009 has been held. Also, a lot of brands are busy promoting the windsurfing equipment for 2010.

The upcoming weeks you can expect new posts about the topics I mentioned so you are completely informed again.

On holiday

Neilpryde Magic Moments

Magic Moments – That’s the name for the new Neilpryde video. In this video you can expect full action images shot at the pwa world tour in Pozo. Antoine Albeau dominates the slalom windsurfing course and Ricardo Campello is attempting a triple loop.

Campello didn’t get the $10.000 ,- that was promised to him if he landed a triple forward loop. But because of his good attempt he will receive $5.000,-. Still very nice .
