Simple Technology Has Long Reach

Mike Holman, Manager of our Digital Resource Team, received this message from ministry partner, Michael M., in Zambia, Africa. It reveals how far simple technology's impact reaches when accurately applied.

Mike,

Thank you very much. I received what you sent to me ...

These things are helping our pastors very well. Our digital library has 320 regular ministers who do use the teachings. We have burnt 410 CD's to give to pastors.

Please do pray for me.

I do have four planned activities to get into new places to establish digital facilities.

In March I will go to the Eastern part of Zambia to meet 150 pastors for three days. We shall be talking about how to use MP3's and CD's. They believe that these materials are important for them.

In May I will go to the western part of Zambia for three days to meet 90 pastors. We shall spend time talking about digital library and also I will take moments to burn them CD's and DVD's. I hope to start a library here and so we are also looking for an external disc like you provided to me. One pastor has agreed to donate a laptop computer. We pray that we can also install 4 desk top computers...

In July I have an invitation to go to the Northern side of Zambia to meet 230 pastors and we shall expose them to the digital library. They will be using computers from a church. So we pray that we shall leave them with enough teachings on videos and audio CD's. The distance is far and I will travel with 4 other pastors.

80% of the world cannot or does not learn from reading

They prefer to learn by STORY

Discover Bible truths

Tell fascinating, accurate Bible stories

These skills will help you to:

Reach media-literate North American culture

Maximize your impact with those from other nations

Explore the dynamic of oral strategies

Lead others (even non-literates) to discover Bible truths they can share

...all without notes!

15 Years That Changed The World

“The last 15 years have changed our world for ever,” claims Tony Whittaker, co-ordinator of Internet Evangelism Day. “Digital media are transforming the way we communicate, behave and even think. If Facebook was a country, it would have the fourth largest population in the world.”

Internet Evangelism Day is a strategic resource to help the worldwide church understand these issues and use the Web to share the good news. It is both a year-round online guide and an annual focus day - to be held this year on Sunday 25 April.

Churches are encouraged to use Internet Evangelism Day resources to create a presentation for their members on or near that Sunday (or at any other time they choose). The IE Day site offers free downloads: PowerPoint, video clips, handouts, drama scripts, music and posters. These enable any church (or homegroup, college, or conference) to build a customized program, lasting from five minutes to fifty.

2010’s focus day will be the sixth to be used by churches around the world since the initiative’s launch in 2005. Over this period, digital media have developed dramatically, with the advent of YouTube, Facebook and Twitter, and the growing use of mobile phones to access online services.
The outreach opportunities have multiplied too. There are now more mobile phone users in Africa than any other continent.

DEScribe 1.2.5 Release

MAF-LT is excited to announce a new release of DEScribe! DEScribe is a course authoring application that supports exporting to DEViewer. This release of DEScribe includes several smaller enhancements:

Added a selected icon to the cascading style sheet display in the metadata tree. This is useful if a package contains multiple css files.

The styles in the cascading style sheet are now automatically displayed in the WYSIWYG drop-down styles menu.

Added the list of panes under the Windows menu item. Each pane can be shown or hidden from this menu.

Added additional file types to the file-type selector in the insert images and resources dialog box

A set of completed tickets for this release is located on the DEScribe Trac site for release 1.2.5.1.

For more information and to download DEScribe 1.2.5, please visit the DEScribe product page.

La Carpio Slum

La Carpio has no known internet connectivity, partly because of major lack of resources but also because of geographical isolation. It is actually within the capital city of Costa Rica, but because it's a slum built around a garbage dump, it is nicely isolated from surrounding areas by a river on each side, a garbage dump on the third, and the only way in and out is a thin road on a sort of peninsula.

Our partnering with the missionary Steve Edwards who has been serving that isolated community for the last five years, has shaped the Christian impact in that poor area.

A computer lab is already in place and running, installed in August 2008. Steve, the missionary there, has been using the lab almost exclusively to allow kids to use. However, with little supervision, the lab has been largely just an arcade. This has also served to open up the lab to become a nice dish of viruses.

The Work of His Hands

MAF-LT’s Orality ministry (in partnership with Simply The Story) attracted hi-calibre help to Thailand this month. A team of nine instructors from four continents converged in Chiang-Mai to prepare for two, story-telling workshops among the Karen refugees in northwest Thailand.

Led by MAF-LT Orality Specialist, Regina Manley, the team put hands to the initial task for four full days. No two workshops unfold exactly alike. So, despite conducting similar courses in many countries, they studied scripture, discussed culture, re-wrote lessons, and prayed.

Surprise Gift in a Strange Land

Clearly, David knew his truck. The city traffic flowed well enough through Chiang Mai, Thailand’s narrow avenues, but I judged the slot he entered between buildings barely walkway width. Somehow, he navigated a right angle turn leaving fender and wall unscathed, then stopped in the small cement court at the end. This hidden guest house entrance offered intimate welcome with a dozen chairs and a small table gracing canopy shaded space.

We arrived with a quick task - check two team members out and move their luggage to a central gathering point. Ten or fifteen minutes tops should do it. We had a tight schedule to prepare for teaching Karen refugees how to share God’s Word through stories. I helped my wife, Regina, pack quickly. But Tony, recovering from a tropical bug, moved more slowly. So, David, Regina and I waited outside with other guests escaping afternoon heat. Then, we met Ana.

An attractive, dark complected lady in her late 20’s, Ana served as guest house director. As she spoke, something very out of place sounded very familiar. Besides looking the part, Ana’s alto voiced English flowed with latin flair rather than oriental staccato.

“Where are you from?” I asked.

“Nicaragua,” she answered.

“How did you come to be here?” I wondered aloud.

“Long story,” she smiled. “But, it’s all the Lord’s doing.”

David popped up, exclaiming, “Regina, tell her a story in Spanish!”

“In Spanish?” Ana’s eyes widened. “I haven’t heard my language for a very long time.”
