Many months late, here is Act 49! And its 2003 reprint equivalent, Act 57! Since I only did one chapter, I decided to go into even more detail with the comparisons between them. Namely I noted some things that I was too lazy to do before, like noses being added and text being moved around. Someday I want to go back and add those things to the earlier chapters, but this one has absolutely everything my eyes could find. (Assuming I didn't forget to type it up or accidentally overwrite the entry, anyway.) Every single page but the last one has some sort of difference.

It's only a matter of hours before I would have hit that thirteen month mark again. But I wanted to see how many other things I could get done first, so I only started on this a few days ago. Living on the edge, of course. I still don't want to make any promises, but I'll be shocked if there isn't another update in five weeks or so.

It's a year late, but here is Act 47 and Act 48 at last! And their reprint equivalents, Act 55 and Act 56! And just because the series is nearly over doesn't mean there's any shortage of differences between them. Many dialogue changes, and countless visual tweaks such as blurry Wiseman. Only four chapters (and three side stories) remain, and I can say with certainty the next update will be less than thirteen months from now.

But my site is not the only Sailor Moon-related thing to experience considerable delays. Instead of aizouban we got kanzenban reprints after all, and as of last week the entire series and its side stories have been re-re-released. I do have all 10 so far (what the hell will 11 and 12 be?), but I've put off going through them thoroughly until I finish the current comparison project. Though in skimming through the kanzenban version of this update's two chapters, they seem to be identical to the 2003 version anyway.

Things should mostly be back to normal for me now, but I don't want to make any promises about the update schedule just yet. Especially since other projects of mine have been backlogged for all this time too.

Rei and Minako's Public School Battle: Act 45 and Act 46 are up! Along with their reprint equivalents, Act 52, Act 53, and Act 54! I'm sure they have the least interesting set of differences in the galaxy, including a very one-sided table row. But that was the final double length chapter in the tankoubon, and that also finished the second-to-last PGSM volume, so there's a pretty clear course to the end.

On another note, I theorized in an update months ago about a third printing of the manga, and I later found out there is indeed a third version (aizouban!) in the works. They've been delayed at least once, and the actual release date is still a mystery. But in turn, Kodansha has given the PGSM volumes another print run, so if you're interested in those grab them while you can. (They were getting expensive with second-hand sellers.) As for the aizouban books, I do hope to collect them and potentially compare them to the other two versions. The comparison page badly needs to be reformatted (and split up?) anyway.

Running late again, but here's Act 44! And its PGSM counterpart, Act 51! Plus some comparisons, featuring many small art quirks and a typo correction. And apparently "Moon Eternal Make-Up" was a one-time thing. The next chapter is double length, so there was just no time to do that along with...

Side stories! We have Ami's battle with MelCooleyus, in both old and new formats. And we have Minako's battle with nuns, also in both old and new formats. Along with comparisons for both chapters, of course. And that finishes the exam stories, three books later.

Along with its reprint counterparts, Act 44 and Act 45! And some comparisons, of course, which don't include fixing the mirror name error. I was hoping to do the next chapter too, but that didn't happen. Double length or not, I didn't want to get stuck at an odd number again, so I'll have to find a way to rectify it.

I did upload all of this yesterday, for the usual first of the month, but I didn't get a chance to write up the news post until now. Mainly because I wanted to summarize this Takeuchi anecdote, which doesn't really fit on the comparisons page. Basically: the first half of BSSM 39/PGSM 44 was a lot different when it ran Nakayoshi. Her editor complained that it didn't include Usagi or resolve the Minako situation, so she added those things at the expense of Haruka, et al. But come the tankoubon release, she took the opportunity to expand the chapter and make it closer to her original vision. It's not exactly clear what was added or changed, other than a different, less relevant Yeats poem ("Symbols"...?) being used in the Nakayoshi version. But whatever they were, most of these changes apparently persist in the PGSM reprints, since there aren't any drastic differences from the old tankoubon.

And you can have a little more Makoto with the first the first Exam War chapter! With its reprint version, of course, and some comparisons. I did the bulk of this last month, but didn't quite make the deadline. And I don't know when I'll get to do the other exams, since there are a lot of double-length chapters coming up. I guess I'll be spending the next couple months having my own introspective battle against time monsters.

But if that's not enough Rei for you, I've also got a script for Casablanca Memory! This is a side story that takes place during the first arc, but was published during the second arc, compiled into a tankoubon between the third and fourth arcs, and of course the PGSM version was released after the fifth arc. And here's looking at some comparisons.

Also, the second Chibi Usa Picture Diary! And its PGSM counterpart, though I think this might be the first chapter I've done with no real dialogue changes. And this finishes up old books 10, 11, and 12. Next month will probably include at least some of the side stories from 13, but not at the expense of doing two normal chapters.

Time for some Fish Eye fun with Act 35! And its reprint counterpart, Act 40! With comparisons between them, of course. But I only had time for one main story act because I also did a really, really long side story. Next month I'll probably even it out with 36 and some shorter side stories, and then go back to normal.

That really, really long side story is of course Princess Kaguya's Lover! And its reprint version. Plus comparisons, too, full of many minor art changes, and yet the disguise pen incantation was left alone (!?). After last month, I'm stuck going slightly out of order with the old tankoubon, and these 130 or so wordy pages (science! medicine!) were one of the biggest hurdles to fixing that.

Also, how about that new anime? I've noticed the PGSM books seem to be going out of print in Japan, and the same thing happened a decade ago with the original tankoubon. But then we got new cover reprints as a tie-in with the live-action series, so maybe we'll get a third version as a tie-in with the new anime. I sure wouldn't mind a kanzenban style release, with better paper and ALL the color pages.

Let's bring the third arc to a close with Act 33! And its reprint counterparts, Act 36, Act 37 and Act 38! Plus comparisons for all that infinitely infinite stuff.

I had wanted to do some more side stories before starting the Dream arc, but I got a big surprise as I was doing comparisons. That is, PGSM 38 had a bunch of extra pages about eclipses and stuff. Which kind of forced me to do Act 34, too! And reprint Act 39 to correspond to the remaining pages. So now we're in the fourth arc a little sooner than I expected, but I guess that beats being stuck in the second arc for 4 years.

Busters Ready Go! This month we have both labyrinth chapters (but no Bowie): Act 31 and Act 32! And some comparisons between all of them, of course, with much less atashi/watashi nonsense this time.

Also! I've finally revised, compared, and PGSM-ized Chibi Usa Picture Diary 1! Now the revision project is really REALLY complete. But it turns out redoing 25 pages on a whim at the last minute is a bad idea, because every problem will happen.

Anyway... The old tankoubon are still my primary source, which means there's only one Infinity chapter left. It's triple size, but I do plan to do the whole thing in one go. I guess it will be a warm-up for potentially doing both a double size and normal act in the same month, or the super long Kaguya side story.

I guess it's not a huge surprise, because I've done double-length chapters before, but time is a precious commodity. And there are comparisons for both of them, but there are surprisingly few changes considering the amount of exposition in these two chapters. There were a lot of minor atashi/watashi changes, but not nearly as many as there could have been.

I did break one minor thing with the RSS feed last month, and fixing it might cause a double post, so apologies if so. This should be the last of all that.

Despite the date, this is a completely genuine update. Act 28 is done! As is the reprint version, Act 31! Also, Acts 21-23 (23-26 in the reprints) have been revised and given separate scripts. And it all has comparisons, of course. With this, the gap between the old stuff and new stuff is now gone, and everything I've done so far has comparisons and separate scripts.

So from now on, it will be all Death Bastards all the time (at least until the arc is over). After a whole year of doing things once a month, I want to try bumping the pace up to two Acts per month. That would still include separate scripts and comparisons, of course. So that means 29-30 (reprint 32-33) is the goal for next month. But we'll have to see how that works out in practice.

Also, I apologize if this update breaks the RSS feed. I've done my best to avoid it, but I'm currently setting up a new site-wide news system and changing stuff around. You can leave comments now!

March is here, and so is Act 27! And the reprint version, Act 30! This marks the actual halfway point of the main story, which is reflected better in the PGSM structure. As for the older stuff, I now have Acts 19-20 revised and page number'd, which is more than it sounds because that's 20-22 in the reprints. Of course there are script comparisons for all of this stuff, too. The revision/comparison gap is nearly closed now, and then I can put more time into 100% new stuff.

You may or may not have noticed that I skipped Chibi Usa Picture Diary 1 this time. (It comes after Act 19 in the old tankoubon.) I wanted to get the main story re-done ASAP, so I'm leaving the book on my desk until after the Black Moon arc is fully revised. Maybe I'll wait and do it at the same time as Picture Diary 2, which comes after Act 33 (end of the third arc) in the old tankoubon. The reprints group all the side stories together, after all.

I'm (sort of) halfway done now, because the script for Act 26 is done! Along with the reprint version, Act 29! I forgot to do the reprint script until last night, but luckily for me there were very few changes. Also, I have revised and compared Acts 15-18 (16-19 in the reprints), which means I'm finally done cleaning up the 2006-2007 stuff. So now it's just a matter of getting comparisons done for the rest of the 2011 stuff.

New year, new month, and new script: Act 25! As well as the reprint version, Act 28! I've also finished revisions of Acts 12-14 (13-15 in the reprints), and of course comparisons for all of it. The Dark Kingdom arc is done again, and the rest of the old old stuff should also be done very soon.

The day is almost over, but I do have Act 24 ready! And its reprint counterpart, Act 27! Also revisions of Acts 10-11 (10-12 in the reprints), and comparisons for both the old and new stuff. (Farewell, Street Fighter and Terminator references...) It may not sound like it, but everything combined amounts to roughly the same amount of pages as I did last month, so I guess I'm still keeping a pretty consistent pace.

It's only taken, what, four years? But the Black Moon arc is complete with this script for double length Act 23! At least I'm consistent now. And I've also revised Acts 6-9, with separate scripts for each version (and of course comparisons) and some much needed clean up work. One tankoubon a month is a lot slower than I expected for this sub-project, but I think it will speed up when I get to the stuff I did in 2011.

Speaking of the revisions, one thing I didn't mention before is that things are more colorful now. If a character has colored manga art somewhere, their name is in color. But at the same time, attack names won't be colored anymore, because I now think it's a little obnoxious. And I've also been de-Wapanizing things a little further, like removing a lot of old quirks ("GC") and reducing the amount of in-story translation notes. Names are now written in Western order (Usagi Tsukino, Mamoru Chiba, etc.), and certain honorifics (oniisan, senpai) are now translated. I remembered it's a plot point that they don't know Motoki's name at first, so that's something you definitely can't omit or change to his name. You can find more details about this and other stuff on the notes page.

The next act is double length in both versions, so it would certainly be a fitting/annoying start for simultaneous double script releases.

October is a relatively big month. First, here is Act 22! This is the penultimate chapter of the Black Moon arc (at least in the older books), and I've already made a lot of progress on the final chapter (which is double length), so yay.

Second, I've finally started a related sub-project that I've always wanted to do: separate scripts for both versions of the manga! Here's the indexes for the old books and the new books, and another page for comparisons between them. I acquired copies of the reprints a couple months ago, but I wanted to finish the Black Moon arc before I started on them. I'm close enough now that I decided to go ahead with it anyway, but so far I've only managed to do up to Act 5.

With those separate scripts also comes a lot of translation revisions I've been meaning to do for a while, which is part of why I haven't gotten many separate scripts done yet. I've also been reformatting the pages to include page numbers from the corresponding books. Act 22 doesn't have most of these changes, and neither does what I have done of 23, but ideally everything will be updated to have all the new changes before it's time to start the Infinity arc.

A new month, and Act 21 is ready. Very close to the end of the Black Moon arc now, with a certain character making her "debut." It seems pretty obvious who she is in context, which is why I used the relevant color codes all throughout. But her name is treated like a big reveal, so I left her unnamed through the whole chapter. Do spoiler-phobes agree? Or does everyone already know the story well enough anyway? You can give your thoughts at the site Twitter or something. (Until I come up with a news comment-y system, anyway.)

On schedule again with Act 20! As I mentioned last month, this is double length, so it spans two Acts in the reprints. Now the different numbering will be even harder to keep track of... There was one line I really hit a snag with, and it should be obvious when you get to it. Hopefully I'll be proficient enough to fix it one day soon.

This chapter also has a bunch of flashbacks, which brings me to something I've always wanted to explain. When there's a flashback to a scene we've seen before, they often contain identical dialogue to the original scene. But there are also many times where the flashback dialogue differs from the original dialogue. I always go back to the original scene and compare the lines. If the dialogue is the same, it's a matter of copy and paste, but if it differs, so does my translation. So if you've ever noticed flashback dialogue differing from the original scene, that's not an inconsistency on my part; that's a reflection of the original text.

Once again I have another script for you: Chibi Usa Picture Diary #1! I'm sure people were expecting Act 20, but since I'm working from the tankoubon, this chapter is what comes after Act 19 in volume 5. So it's a lot easier for me to do it now than getting this book out again post-Stars or something. But I've tweaked the navigation bars at the bottom to account for both the main story alone and the tankoubon layout.

Also, Act 20 is double length, so this has conveniently given me extra time to work on it. But I won't get such a convenience for Act 23...

Another script ready for another month: Act 19! The introduction of the chatty transparent guy, and the end of one of my favorite characters. I feel like I did a really good job this time, possibly due to a change in the way I'm learning new vocabulary. Some things were a little loose to make them sound more natural in English, but I don't think I sacrificed or ruined anything. There were also a few snags in my understanding of some lines again, but I think they're less obvious than they were last time.

So far so good on my "once a month" plan, because Act 18 is up! Chiral and Achiral use all kinds of crazy science words that I only vaguely understand. If you're a chemistry nerd and something they say seems wrong, it's probably Takeuchi's fault more than mine. Probably. But what isn't Takeuchi's fault are a couple of non-science lines I had trouble with. They're probably easy to spot, because they don't make a whole lot of sense. But I intend to correct them one day when I know better (which will hopefully be in the near future).

I also added a lot to the translation notes page, including a new section giving brief explanations of the astronomy/mythology references. I'll add more as it's introduced in the story (or I remember it), but I want to keep it strictly limited to the astronomy/mythology stuff, because A) these kind of references provide insight to the story that the uninformed might miss, and B) at the moment, I don't want to make a giant etymology page where I have to start researching minerals and junk.

Finally making a news section for this project! I've rearranged the navigation a little, in preparation for further sections. Although I wouldn't expect to see new sections anytime soon, since certain other projects are higher priority right now. More importantly, I've added something new: Act 17! It's Calaveras time! I'm hoping to average one chapter a month for the rest of the year, while I prioritize other things. No guarantees, but think positive!

Starting with Act 17, I'm trying to be a bit less literal, just to the point that things sound less stiff, and more like natural English. Things should be just as accurate as they've always been, if not moreso (due to my very gradually increasing proficiency over the years). I fully intend to keep most honorific suffixes, but I'm trying to come up with alternatives to certain ones (namely "Motoki-oniisan" and "Makoto-senpai"). I don't like to omit things, but I don't want to be too Wapanese either. But everything that isn't translated should be italicized now (though I haven't gone through the older acts thoroughly yet). And on a similar note, I've changed around a few font styles (especially the "thinking" one), mostly to better match the different fonts in the books.
