He opted for a low key celebration.

We stayed up late the night before watching horror movies and slept in until 2:30pm. Had some coffee and did some stuff around the house (going through some boxes and stuff). Banshee was awesome and picked us up after work and took us to my mom's apt so we could do laundry (without having to carry the dirty laundry on the bus lol).

When the laundry was in the dryer we took a walk over to Coastal Thai for dinner (sadly mom opted not to go with us - she had a rough couple days at work). Surprisingly it wasn't that cold for the walk. We strolled by our old apt. and saw that someone was indeed living there. (I still kinda miss that place - but i don't miss the lack of a furnace).

You should know I was introduced to a website called foodspotting which is essentially a food twitter where you can upload pics of food and give recommendations. My profile is HERE. I haven't downloaded the app for my phone yet, but I plan on it. I especially love that you can look for recommendations depending on where you are (which would have been awesome to have when we were in Fort Wayne, IN in Oct. last year). It's like having a local in your pocket. I am quite certain i am going to become addicted to foodspotting.

That being said, I made hubby stop before he ate everything tonight lol. I had to take pictures (which at this moment I'm still uploading into foodspotting). (also adding the description i added to foodspotting tonight on the items I uploaded)

We started off with a pair of soups since we wanted to try both kinds.

TOM YUM

Light and yummy with tons of cilantro. This is with fried tofu. Listed as a "hot and sour" soup but it wasn't very spicy. Definitely got the sour tho.

TOM KAH

A little sweet with a nice amount of acidity and spice. You could definitely taste the tomato and cilantro in this. The fried tofu topped off the dish. Simple but amazingly delicious.

Hubby ordered my favorite (altho is it really fair to call it my fave when it's the only thing I've ordered?)

PAD THAI CURRY

My favorite dish at Coastal Thai. I usually get it medium with fried tofu but this is hot with pork. The sweet notes and the spicy notes are so complimentary in this dish. The spice wasn't overwhelmingly hot (and by that I mean it didn't make me cry but i did break a sweat) and the pork was extremely tender. A great blend of flavors.

and I ordered the

PAD WOOK SEN

(Pad Voksen on the menu but google told me it was wrong)

listed on the menu as "Pad Vonsen" - I ordered this medium with fried tofu and an extra egg. They served it to me with a bowl of white rice, which i didn't understand because it is a noodle dish. Nice and spicy with tons of flavor and I loved the fried tofu texturally in the dish.

Hubby ordered hot tea (which i didn't take a pic of) and I got a Thai Sweet Tea. YUM!!!!

I wish I would have taken a pic of my plate after hanging out and eating for the duration of our stay. It looked like i hadn't even made a dent in it. Which is a good thing. Cuz that means I have leftovers for later on today. YAY!!!

After dinner hubby decided he wanted ice cream from Stroh's for dessert (since I forgot to get him a Saunder's caramel cake - I suck as a wife). I got a simple Hazelnut frozen cappucino with whipped cream.

It was really good but a little sweet. I hate to say it, but I prefer Tim Horton's version. But it was yummy.

Hubby chose to get a banana split. Which you can totally customize with whatever ice cream you want and whatever toppings you want (instead of being stuck with the traditional). So he got reese's peanut butter, caramel caribou and pistachio almond with chocolate, strawberry and pineapple toppings.

partly eaten yummy (seriously so much flavor going on here)

While we were there I admired the simplicity of the interior of Stroh's. It really feels very retro.

And believe it or not, hubby finished the ENTIRE banana split!!!!!

in the same amount of time, this is how much i consumed.

And then a short walk back to mom's, with a stop at Bellicoso's for a cigar for hubby (he always has a cigar on Wednesday's - it's his thing). When we got back, mom was asleep already, so we gathered up the clothes, called a taxi, and made it back home around 10pm.

And hubby wasn't done. He decided to continue going through some boxes and rearranging more things. He ended up opening up the living room completely, adding to the wall of boxes in the kitchen, and freeing the CD/DVD shelves and the bookshelf. Which will allow me to go through boxes and empty those full of books and media. Maybe tomorrow. Not sure.

All in all it was such a great night of good food and relaxation with hubby, and he said his bday gift to himself was getting our living room opened up and rearranged.

I am one lucky chick.

xoxox

So, the tooth wasn't salvageable at all.

hubby called around for me (cuz I couldn't really speak) and most places weren't able to give any kind of estimate without getting me in the chair. One place said they could prolly save it but it would be $250 and another said it would cost almost $1000. We finally decided on Superteeth (http://www.superteeth.net) cuz most procedures were $99.

hubby got his check and cashed it and we went to Superteeth (in Warren) around 11am. They were super nice there. I was able to fill out all needed paperwork via a computer in the waiting area and got in to see a dentist in around 30 minutes. I told them I had dentist anxiety and they were really really nice to me.

Sadly, after taking the xray, it was determined that the tooth couldn't be saved at all. Not even for $1000. It was cracked in half and infected. (And since I didn't have any nerves in the root of the tooth it wasn't painful for me - if it hadn't gotten loose who knows how long I would have lived with the infection). Even with their discounted pricing, it was gonna cost around $200 to pull it. We really didn't have the money, rent was due last week, but i had to get it done.

I hyperventilated in the chair. And cried. And it hurt a little. The dentist scolded me for hyperventilating (I'm sure my breath sucked) and for squirming in the chair, but they got the whole thing out and gave me prescriptions for vicodin and motrin to help with the pain. They packed the wound with gauze, gave me paperwork and sent me on my way. As we were driving home I tried to text my mom (who is out of town) to let her know what happened and I couldn't stop shaking. And 5 minutes later I puked my guts out. Lovely, huh?

Hubby took us to CVS and got the prescriptions filled and also got me some soft foods to eat. Then went by mom's to feed her cat and grab some other necessities. Finally we got home. I took the pain pills and an anti-anxiety pill and half an hour later I finally stopped shaking and crying. 3 hours later the wound stopped bleeding. 2 hours after that I finally tried eating something (canned chili - no beans).

I got phone calls from my dad and my friend ShawnEShawn. I tried talking normally but I sounded horrible in my head. I was lisping and afraid to move my tongue and mouth around too much for fear of dislodging the blood clot in the wound and causing dry socket. (I've had numerous teeth removed and I'm still afraid). They were pretty awesome tho.

Ultimately I have to make a game plan this year to get my teeth fixed. Dentures or something. There's a thing called "secure smile" I might check out for shows in the summertime so i don't scare people away from my booth.

And luckily I have an amazing husband who told me over and over again last night how beautiful I am and how much he loves me. Even if i have no teeth. I am truly blessed.

If you know me, you know i don't have good teeth. It isn't for lack of trying however. when hubby had dental insurance, and before we were married, I tried to get things fixed in spite of my extreme phobia of dentists..

There was even a point where i had pain in my top front teeth and altho one of them had to be extracted, the other was "saved" by a root canal. However, insurance ran out and we couldn't afford the cap/crown to be put on afterwards.

Fastforward a few years. This past week my tooth felt a little loose. I was terrified it was periodontal disease. I made hubby get special "we can reverse gingivitis" mouthwash and toothpaste. I brush my teeth (even if my mouth doesn't look like it) but i began brushing more frequently (like 4 and 5 times a day). According to everything I read i was probably too late if my tooth was loose, but i was gonna try anyway.

Then yesterday i woke up and my tooth wasn't just a little loose, it was threatening to fall out. or so I thought. I cried. Hubby tried to console me but it wasn't working. Mom sent her bf to take me to the store and see if i could find something that might work to secure it until i could get to a dentist. I got some dentemp and figured I could try and "attach" it to the tooth next to it.

When i got home i followed the directions and prepped my mouth and teeth for the dentemp. And when I put it on (on the back) i realized that the tooth wasn't falling out of the gums, it was cracked at the base of the tooth. All i can figure is it finally broke since it didn't have any reinforcement from a cap on it.

The dentemp keeps crumbling off after a couple hours so i have to keep reapplying. And I can't eat anything. I am starving right now. Gonna try and eat some cream of chicken soup in a minute. I made the mistake of making some with rice in it yesterday and of course I can't chew. (well i can, but it feels weird and I'm perpetually afraid I'm gonna break the tooth)

Hubby called a couple places today. One said it would be around $250 but they could save the tooth. Gonna try a couple more tomorrow. Hoping to get it fixed soon, but rent is already past due so we may have to put it off for awhile longer. I'll just have to baby it and get some protein drinks i guess. And yogurt.

I'm so tired of this crap

Every year around Christmas you get a thousand posts on Facebook from "friends" saying how they hate when people say "Happy Holidays" or write "Merry Xmas" and how we need to "keep the Christ in Christmas". And every year I want to throttle people.

First of all, "Happy Holidays" is derived from the phrase "Happy Holy Days" which embraces Advent (pre-Christmas), Christmas and the 12 days of holiness that follow, culminating in the celebration of Epiphany on Jan 6th. So in truth (imho), wishing someone a "Happy Holidays" seems to me more of a religious salutation than "Merry Christmas" on it's own.

Second of all, writing "Merry Xmas" is NOT disrespectful to "Christ". X is derived from the Greek letter "chi" which is the first letter of the Greek word for "Christ". And this abbreviation has been used FOR CENTURIES.

And third of all, Christ is NOT THE REASON FOR THE SEASON!!!

If you actually take the time to study your bible and do the research (or google and find the research others have done for you) you will discover that it has been determined that Jesus was born sometime is the Hebrew month of Tishri, which approximately coincides with our modern day September/October. (And that just makes sense. What shepherds do you know that wander around in the cold?)

The reason the birth of Christ is celebrated in December instead is due to the fact that the early Christian Powers That Be determined that it would be easier to convert the "pagans" if they didn't have to give up their celebration of Yule (which is the celebration of the winter solstice amongst other things depending on to whom you speak).

And a holiday was born.

I am pagan.

I have been pagan since sometime around 16 but I didn't fully embrace it and "come out" until around 19 or 20. Every year people wish me Merry Christmas. And I don't get offended. I don't run around telling people they need to wish me a happy Yule. I accept it with a smile. Why can't Christians do the same?

And yet i know that I will have to go through this same torture next year.

So Proud of my Hubby!!!

Our car died last week. Hubby was pretty sure it was the starter. We were advised, however, that it could be electrical (like a dead battery) so on Saturday he borrowed Banshee's car and took the battery to get tested. It was completely dead. So he purchased a new one - but it didn't make the car start. Which led to plan B - replacing the starter.

It was priced $130 at the local auto store, so we checked online and found one listed for $71 with free shipping. When we called to order it, it was even cheaper!!! And altho it was gonna take 3-5 business days to get to us, we figured it was totally worth it. So order it we did, and hubby took the bus to work every day and rode a (borrowed) bike every night home. For a week.

The starter was delivered today. At first we thought it was the wrong part cuz it was labelled 2002 starter, but after some googling i discovered that starter fits the 1998 - 2002 version of our car.

hubby went outside and took the old starter off (after much cussing, buying an extender for the rachet and a blood sacrifice). That was obviously the hard part cuz it took him a couple hours to get it off, but only about 30 minutes to put the new one on.

AND THE CAR STARTED!!!!!!

I am so proud of him!!!! And for once we were able to save money on a fix for our car!!! Even with the new battery (at almost $100) it was way cheaper than taking it in to get fixed!! And we still have money to be able to finish our Xmas shopping this weekend :-)

I made hubby promise he would turn down the thermostat before he went to sleep because he was staying up a little later and didn't want "to freeze" if i turned it down.

Usually, as soon as he heads to sleep, I turn the thermostat down from 70 to around 55 - 60.

Well, he didn't turn it down. And I can't sleep when it's too warm. Especially since I got used to sleeping in super cold in our old apt (in the winter - in the summer it was sleeping in the warm - which i don't do so well). So I woke up 3 hours later sweating and haven't been able to get back to sleep since. I have turned the heat down tho, so hopefully I will be able to sleep soon as it cools down enough.

Seriously, I leave the heat at around 60 during the day until hubby gets home (or i take a shower - i turn it up then so it's not cold when i get out soaking wet). I turn it up when he gets home from work cuz he's always freezing. He's a chef, so he's in extreme heat all day (worse in the summer). I prefer to dress warm and cover up with throws. Plus, like i said, I can't sleep when it's warm. (i don't know how i survived when i was a kid - we didn't have air conditioning).

I must say tho, i am really glad that we have a furnace and i have the ability to be too warm. Last winter was so incredibly rough. I hate the situation that caused us to move, but I'm ultimately glad we did.

Can't Sleep

Days and nights are all screwed up - again. Plus I'm a little stressed out (as usual) mostly about money and living and stuff like that.

I must say tho, I am so in love with our new place. I really miss the old one. Being downtown was so nice, especially during the holiday season cuz it's so pretty, but this place isn't too shabby in terms of location. I have a 7-11 right around the corner from me, as well as a deli, and the bus stop is less than half a block from my door (and it runs to downtown).

It's also so much bigger in certain aspects and actually easier to keep clean. There are places to store things (even tho we WILL have to start moving boxes to storage pretty soon). AND THERE'S A FURNACE!!! No more living like frigging squatters with small electric heaters to keep us warm.

Only a handful of people really know how we were living in our former place. As much as we loved it, we never had people over because it was never finished and we couldn't fix it up and completely furnish it the way we wanted to because practically every last penny we had went to paying a $1000 electric bill that accumulated over the winter months and then playing catch up constantly after that.

Not wanting to get into details of everything online right now. It's all still too fresh.

Anyway, I can't sleep. It's almost 7am. I'm thinking I'm gonna head to the kitchen and make a big pot of coffee and do the dishes in the sink and maybe, once the sun comes up, I'll head over to 7-11 and grab a couple donuts or something.

I have spent most of the day in the apt today but i am pretty much useless cuz i'm so tired and sore from yesterday. Mostly I've washed clothes and bagged them up to take to the new place tonight. Also boxed up some electronic stuff. Will finish the bedroom by the time hubby gets here tonight after work (hopefully).

Tomorrow I'm spending the day at the new place to try and get some things unpacked and organized there so it looks and feels livable. Right now we have our loveseat set up and our bed and the tv in the living room - OH! and the coffee maker in the kitchen lol. you know - the necessities ;)

When hubby gets off work tomorrow it's back here to pack up the rest of the kitchen and the craft room. Wednesday is gonna be the living room and dining room and Thursday will be minor cleaning (if all goes according to plan) and giving the keys back to Leon (in exchange for our vacuum cleaner)

I'm so frigging tired. The only thing keeping me from taking a nap is the fact that we don't have a bed or a couch or anything for me to lay on lol.

Gonna play some bingo blitz - then it's back to packing and cleaning.

really sad. i loved this place so much. i planned on staying here for many years. now the new apt looks like the place we'll be staying at for awhile.

it's hard to believe that just 6 years ago we were in such a different place than we are now. Back then we didn't know how good we had it really. Now I'm lucky if we have extra money to treat myself to a coffee from the local coffee house.

the sister situation isn't any better. She sent me a message basically telling me my lack of answering her is stress she doesn't need and so i don't need to bother responding at all. I'm not expounding on anything i'm feeling right now other than to say it makes me sad. (which apparently is my word today)

maybe after the move i'll be better.

wow it's been awhile

I've had alot going on in my life - which should mean I should blog more - but instead I've been keeping it inside me - i really need a blog with a password protect option so that not everyone can read my thoughts.

Yeah - sometimes i miss the days when no one read this thing.

Family thing not any better. Got a message from sis on the same weekend that we were informed that we had 30 days to move from our apt (the apt we thought we'd be in for years), which was also the same weekend i did my first out of town show and almost didn't make enough money to be able to travel back to michigan. It was a helluva weekend lemme tell you. (and sis recently sent me another message - I've not responded to either - I'm still trying to figure out how to word things clearly and without being a total bitch in her eyes - altho I really shouldn't give a damn and just let my fingers go)

Got rejected from a local craft fair for the 3rd year in a row. Seriously brought me down.

Then did a show sponsored by a local cause which was completely not worth the effort. Didn't even make our booth fee. And ended up sore for the next 2 days - prolly due to all the shivering and holding down of the tent in 40mph winds (yes we had weights but they were at their limit apparently). At least it was for a worthwhile cause. And i got swabbed for the bone marrow registry. So who knows - i may save a life someday.

I really needed to do well at both the out of state show and this one because hubby went on payroll at his new job and therefore wasn't getting a check for 2 weeks (he will finally get paid on this coming saturday) - so we've been living super small. We have $40 to live on until he gets his check. Luckily he doesn't have to drive so we save there.

mom had surgery this morning - everything went well. I'll prolly see her tomorrow. Today I was lucky to get out of bed. Slept 14 hours almost straight. Dreams were really good.

wow. I'm a complete downer today. I'm signing off to play some fb games and maybe i'll feel better tomorrow.

xoxox

Family Dynamics

Let's just say my family is fucked in the head. There's so much going on right now that pisses me off it's not funny.

Long Stories short:

My sister got mad at our mom a couple months back and consequently mad at me (cuz apparently i chose the wrong side) and now is not talking to me and blocked me from seeing her facebook activity except the very basics (which at least means i get to see pics of my niece).

That in turn caused my dad and stepmom to stop communicating with me. I don't have absolute proof of that, but yesterday was labor day and usually involves a BBQ invitation at dad's house, which i didn't receive this year. I could be wrong and they could have just passed it up, which i am hoping, but I'm not holding my breath.

And of course there's the whole cousin drama going on. One cousin is back in jail and as a result another cousin is getting shit on by those in the family that blame cousin #2 for cousin #1 being back in jail. Both C1 and C2 live with our grandfather (well C1 will when jailtime is served) which means that, for example, during the recent heatwave, C1 supporters went into C2's room (on the 2nd floor - you know, where heat rises to) and unplugged the A/C and hid the adapter so C2 couldn't turn it back on.

Petty bullshit. I'm sick of it. I don't tolerate it from hubby's family and i sure as hell don't tolerate it from mine. And don't tell me that their my family and i HAVE to put up with it and love them anyway. I don't.

Time for a short walk.

to finish the story - another friend posted that his gf's car's a/c went out and he had to get it fixed because not having a/c is"bad for the kids" (his gf's kids)

REALLY!?!?!

(his explanation to me was the son and his gf both have breathing "issues" and the hot humid air isn't good for them.

GAH!!!!!

(of course i type this from my air conditioned living room - but if i didn't have a/c i'd be outside or sitting in front of a fan"

xoxox

learn to swim

well, today there were HUGE storms that snuck in during the evening. They actually freaked me out a little bit. They definitely freaked out my cats.

We have 2 doors into our apt - an outside door downstairs and another lockable one upstairs. Hubby left the downstairs one unlocked, and consequently it blew open in the storm. I ran down the stairs to close and lock it up and my calico followed (cuz she loves going where she shouldn't). I couldn't lure her back upstairs right away. Usually she lays on the cement next to the door until she gets tired or bored - which could be hours. Well a huge crash of thunder came shortly after i got upstairs and all of the sudden she came STREAKING into the dining room. And ever since then she creeps up on the door (upstairs) cautiously like it's gonna reach out and attack her.

The other cat just crawled under the bed until the worst passed.

Funnily tho, when it was all over, a friend of mine on fb (from HS) posted a pic of her hubby on a raft floating down their street - just a few blocks from where i live. their entire street was like a river (learn to swim) Luckily we didn't get any flooding - altho the utility room is a little damp.

And altho i ranted on fb earlier - i have to rant again.

i have 2 friends on fb and all they seem to do is complain. This is fine. I'm used to it. I generally ignore it.

however TODAY both of them had "White Whines" - one friend complained about how hot it is camping this weekend and how the a/c in their rv wasn't working as well as it should. REALLY!?!?!!? AIR CONDITIONING WHILE YOU ARE CAMPING!?!?!?! ARE YOU F-ING KIDDING ME!?!?!

when i was little we went camping with a tent. we found ways to stay cool.

crap - hubby came home and we're heading out for a couple adult beverages - i'll finish tomorrow.

life in general

i'm getting ready to head over to hubby's new job so we can walk home together. i love that he's working so close. He told me yesterday that in 2 weeks he's spent less than $20 in gas (cuz he can walk to work) contrast that with $40 every 4 days at his former job. so eventually - when we get the bank to get their head out of their azz - we will be saving money.

Also gonna try and do NaBloPoMo for the month of July. The official theme is "swim" but we're free to write about whatever we want. Plus with a couple art fairs coming up i'm sure i'll have some stories to tell.

kk - on my way. catch you on the flipside.

frickin banks!!!!!

so currently we are fighting with our bank. first of all they signed us up for overdraft protection without us opting into it. Then they charged us an overdraft fee FOR AN OVERDRAFT FEE!!!! WTF!!!!!

hubby is going in to the bank tomorrow to fight with them - this is just ridiculous. Seriously if we didn't need a bank to handle payments and the like we would just close this damn account and walk away.

hello

today i realized that I have been ignoring myself. this is going to stop. I'm planning a big blog post (or a series of smaller ones) over this week to catch myself up on what's been going on.

In the meantime, my newest creative endeavour - mini bottlecap charm bracelets
