Just like the alphabet E defined everything electronic and got tagged on to many words in order to denote the electronic or online nature of things, the alphabet now doing the popularity rounds is M. It does not take a long while to guess that M stands for MOBILE and some of the new terms that are fast becoming part of our regular vocabulary include:

mCommerce

mLearning

mBanking

mHealth

and so on.

The development of a new connected economy has been made possible by the advent of smartphones. Simply put a smart phone is a ‘phone that does more than just a standard phone…so it is called a smart phone’. Some of the standard features of the new-gen smart phones include all the services mentioned above plus offer you 24/7 connectivity to your email, friends and social media tools. The new smart phones are also highly productivity oriented tools connecting you to your work place and increasing your output even while on the move.

Some of the popular smart phones include the BlackBerry, iPhone and a host of phones from Nokia, Samsung, HTC and even Google! With more than 2.5 billion phones in the world, it is only a short time before many of them convert to smart phones and people begin to unlock the potential of having a computing device with 24/7 connectivity.

So what does the future hold in store for smart phone users?

Though smart phones are mostly touted as a powerful entertainment console, they have the potential to become medical tools in far flung locations, learning devices for mobile learning and a virtual bank ATM when you need it. With such powerful potential, there are security concerns as well. Smart phones are being used by terrorists to communicate without surveillance and are likely to cause security threats in corporate environments. However, the benefits of smart phones outweigh the negatives and that makes it an excellent tool for the future.

Smart phone users will also see a consolidated market with fairly expensive but well-featured phones like the iPhone and the BlackBerry. These phones are likely to offer complete connectivity with your work place, home and even give you real time tracking of your children (or anything else you want to track!). Geo-location services will be one of best benefits while using a smart phone and you can bid the feeling of getting lost in a new city…goodbye for ever!

With more than 100,000 apps in the iTunes store and more on the way, the smart phone generation is set to grow in a geometric progression when compared with the growth of internet users. As the apps mature, smart phone users can expect a tool for almost every activity that you do with the help of automation plus more.

So the next time you need some help balancing your cheque books, turn to your iPhone and you are likely to find an app or mLearning tools to get it right!

Are you having a tough time with your present mobile phone? Is making calls becoming a boring and extremely tough job for you? Do you want something that would make life easier for you? Why don’t you try phone shortcuts? This certainly is no joke. The tech and software market now boasts of the most unimaginable software applications that can make phone calls, and not just that, but also iPod operations an easy and exciting proposition for you.

Apple has already introduced it and other companies are following in the same direction. The phone shortcuts can help start the phone applications a lot faster than they actually do. Not just phone applications, but one can also operate and control the iPhone with it. All that one needs to do is to pick up an application and synchronize it with the software.

You can identify hotkeys, which have to be pressed a little longer to start the application. The most interesting features of these hotkeys are that these can be operated to start an application even if the keypad is locked. That means you do not have to unlock the keypad whenever you need to operate an application as the functions that are in sync with these hotkeys can be used just by pressing these keys.

One can also change the timeout duration of these hotkeys and can enable or disable them as and when required. When you use phone shortcuts, you can auto activate as many as five applications when you start your mobile phone. Apart from this, you can directly turn on the shortcuts with the help of the ‘clear’ key, which is the master hotkey, while enabling the use of the hotkeys for normal use as sending ‘SMS’ and other operations.

Your daily life can be changed altogether for good when you start using mobile phone shortcuts. You can start feeling that you have got greater freedom than you had ever before. What’s more, you can even use the same software to control the operations of your iPhone to make them work at an even better speed than before.

So what are you waiting for now? Do you want freedom or do you want to remain hooked to the monotony of your present telephonic operations that are extremely slow? Go for phone shortcuts. You will be surprised to see the pace at which your life improves.

There is time when you do not want to go to office but there are some important emails in your inbox at office that you have got to reply to. What do you do now? You wish if you could access your office desktop from your home and do whatever you wanted to with the mail box without going out of your home. Rejoice! It is possible now. You can access remote computer emails and schedule them in your home desktop, Palm top or Pocket PC.

Accessing Remote Computer through LAN (Modem)
Outlook 2002 and later versions allow you to send and receive emails and exchange any other information from home, work or anywhere. While in office you can connect with local network and while at home or other remote location, you can access your system through a modem which transfers data through telephone line or any other dedicated internet lines. You can use Outlook or any other online email service like Webmail to access your emails. These utilities allow you to view, edit, send and receive your emails. Webmail comes handy in such situation and is quite easy to operate.

Accessing Your Emails Remotely from Laptop
Of course you can not carry your desktop along with its internet accessories like modem and a connecting line wherever you go. Bu you do feel the need. All the new laptops are coming with Wi-Fi technology which is a Wireless Fidelity technology providing wireless internet connection. All you need to avail this feature is to just stay in a Wi-Fi zone. There is another instrument called WLAN or Wireless LAN which is a small, easy to carry USB modem which can be used from anywhere within the service providers’ network. Once you have established internet connection, you can access any email account, no matter where you are.

Accessing Remote Emails through Mobile
New mobile instruments come with built-in Wi-Fi or GPRS technology to allow remote connectivity. This technology is very much in use among the business persons and professionals who need to stay connected with their email accounts in a real time manner. Once you are able to get internet connectivity, you can access email client on your device. It can be Outlook, Webmail or any other email client that you might be using. There are many advanced technology mobile devises from BlackBerry, iPhone and others who allow you to access remote email servers in an easy manner. So wherever you are, you are never far from your email account now.

Email is one of the popular types of online communication. You are required to have an email account in order to send and receive messages.

What is email?

Email is an electronic message, which a person can use to engage other person in conversation. Whenever you send an email to someone, the message is delivered to the inbox of the recipient. The recipient needs to access his email account to read your email. You need to know the email address of the person (recipient) to whom you want to send mail. The email address consists of three components. 1) A username- which comes before @ sign; 2) the ‘@’ sign; and 3) name of the email server that receives email.

Get yourself email account

There are several free email services available. These email services provide enough storage space (some web mail services offer space of up to 5GB). The web mail service also allows you to send attachments, such as, documents, pictures and other kind of files along with messages.

Writing an email

Email is intended for simple and quick communication. You should pay proper attention to grammar and spelling mistakes. Email program have built in spell checking facility. Email services also offer you the option to send copy of the same mail to different people at same time with ‘Cc’ and ‘Bcc’ option.

Cc: When you include email addresses in CC, all the recipient will know about the list of people who have received the same message.

Bcc: When you include email address in Bcc. The recipient is unaware about the other people who have received the same message.

Reading email

All messages you receive are stored in your inbox. When you log into your web mail account, you will see an inbox, which displays total number of messages inside and number of new messages you have received. The new messages are arranged on the top of the list, and you will see an icon of closed envelope accompanying unread email messages. When you open a message, the icon changes to open envelope, which indicates you, have opened the message

Replying to message

You can click on the reply button on the web mail interface to reply to a mail. Selecting the reply button automatically copies the email address of the sender to whom you wish to send mail. The original copy of the mail is also added to message body.

Forwarding a message

If you want to send a message that you have received to an individual or a group, you can use the forward option to send the mail.

Below is a comparison of smartphones based on the Hardware and Operating system (OS) they use and, on connectivity and Networks.

Comparison of Smartphones based on Hardware and OS:

Hardware in the smartphone includes the camera features, the keyboard and CPU, ROM and RAM, whereas, the OS is the system, which the phone uses to function. All the smartphones vary in terms of RAM, but if your desire is to store loads of data in your phone, then you should look at the Nokia N97 and Apple iPhone 3G, which has an RAM of 32 GB. However, if you are into photography and love to take pictures, then you should definitely check out the Samsung SGH-i8000 Omnia II, which has a 5mp face detection, smile detection, geo tagging, Auto focus and Dual LED flash camera. As far as the OS is concerned, majority of smartphones use the Windows mobile 6.1; however, some also use the Symbian OS series.

Comparison of Smartphones based on Network and Connectivity

Not all smartphones support all types of network technologies. Thus, it is best to select a phone that supports majority of network technologies. This is because, the connectivity features heavily, depend on the network technology you use. For instance, you will get a GPRS connection on a 3G and GSM network, but you won’t get it on a CDMA network. Majority of smartphones contain the Bluetooth connection. If you want a phone compatible with all types of Network technologies, then you should look at the Samsung Omnia, which supports all types of network technologies, such as, the CDMA, GSm, 3G and UMTS.

Everything said and done, with full respect to technology, there can be no comparison between smartphones, as a person should look for smartphones, which best meets requisite needs and requirements.

Many people face several types of problems, associated with receiving or sending email, on daily basis. Some of the common problems are as follows:

Problem 1:

‘I am unable to send emails’

Solution:

If you get timeout errors when sending emails, there may be something wrong with Firewall or Antivirus.

As a test run, try resending the mail after turning them off. If you still face problems while sending the mail, it indicates there’s indeed something wrong with firewall or antivirus. In such a case, contact your software vendor and consider reinstalling firewall or antivirus. Before this, copy any unsent message in the text form and have them saved on your computer’s back-up storage medium or a hard drive. After saving all the messages, highlight them in your outbox and then click on either ‘clear’ or ‘delete.’

Problem 2:

‘I have loads of incoming mails and am unable to download the mails’

Solution:

When you receive large volumes of email on a regular basis, you may face certain kinds of complications.

You need to know that there are many Internet service providers, which puts a limit on the amount of storage capacity, provided. The best way to weed out this problem is to access your account through Web mail. By doing this, you can view the list of all your existing messages and can delete the ones that are not important. This can save a significant amount of downloading time. Besides, by deleting messages before they infect your computer, you can also minimize the chances of virus infection.

Problem 3:

‘Many times, I have noticed the attachment missing from emails’

One of the most important features of emails is that they allow you to receive and send photos, documents and other important information in the form of attachments. It may indeed be a very frustrating experience not to find any attachment, even if, your mail refers to an attachment.

If you face such a situation, the first thing you need to do is request the sender to resend the mail with attachment. If the problem persists, ask the sender to check or change the format of the attachment.

If this still doesn’t work, chances are that your anti-virus detected a virus in the attachment and so, deleted the attachment. However, if you notice that all of your mail attachments are being invariably deleted, consider checking your mail properties.

If you have by mistake checked or ticked the box indicating ‘block all attachment,’ uncheck it immediately. After that, if you receive any email from an unknown entity or if the mail seems suspicious, instantly delete the email without opening the attachment.

With the above information you can solve or avoiding any kind of email-related problem.

What do you do if a great blogging idea hits you when you are on the go? You can’t run around to find a computer every time you have a bright idea. The solution to this problem is using phones to blog. Several blogging services allow people to post blogs via their cell phones. However, to do so, you need the services and features of a smart phone.

Several text-based blogs allow you to send entries via emails to specific addresses about which only you have knowledge. The advantage of posting your blog entries through email is that this method is very smart phone friendly. If you have installed the settings for sending out an email using your smart phone, you don’t need to be online to create a blog entry. You can do this using the messaging feature. Once your entry is ready, you can send it to your blog using the GPRS connection of your phone. The process will cost you only a few cents.

Here’s a look at how you adjust the settings of your blog service to be able to blog via your smart phone:

Go to the Settings option of your blogging services provider and click on the email tab. Here you can enter an email address where you want your blog posts to be directed to when you email your entries. Add this email address as a contact on your smart phone. Next, go to write “New Message” and in that go to “Email”. Select your blog email address as the recipient and type in your blog post on the phone. The “subject” of the email becomes the title of the post automatically and the rest of the text is the body of the post. When you press the send button, your blog entry move to your outbox. Go to your outbox and press the send button again. Your blog entry is now online on your blog!

Also, most blog tools and apps, like WordPress, allow you to send blog posts as texts or pictures through email, SMS or MMS. New posts can also be merged with existing entries. Additionally, the Wordpress Mobile Edition allows you to install a plug-in that detects mobile visitors automatically, and show you the list of visitors who visit your website.

iPhone has introduced several innovative ways by which a phone can be put to use. iPhone users can play games, surf the Internet and access webmail by just taping the screen. The email appears on iPhone within moments of tapping and people can access their email inbox from any place. It is very easy to set up webmail access on your iPhone by following the tips given below.

How to add Accounts?

Many email service providers allow you access email through iPhone. However, you are required to setup a webmail account on the iPhone. You can setup a webmail account on iPhone by following the given steps

Tap the settings on the main screen on iPhone

Tap on “Mail” and click on option: Add an Account”

Type your account name (type of account)

Accessing webmail through IMAP

Using IMAP helps, as the messages you receive is in different format, which is more readable in iPhone. From iPhone home screen, tap “Settings”

Click “Mail”. Then “Add Account” under the Accounts section. Choose “Other” and then select “IMAP”.

Enter name under “Name” Field

Type you complete email address under “Address” field.

Enter “Password” in password field.

Enter custom description for your email

Tap “Save”

Now click “Advanced”

Select “Server” and then deleted messages under sent mailbox

Also select “Trash mail under deleted mailbox

10. Ensure Incoming SSL and Outgoing SSL is on

11. Verify “Password” under Authentication

12. Click “Save”

How to setup multiple accounts on iPhone?

You can access multiple accounts from iPhone. However, setting multiple accounts on iPhone is not easy. You can set up a POP or IMAP account by clicking the “others” tab. You are required to tap address field under the PP account or IMAP account settings. Then, tap “Select All” under the menu and tap on “Cut”

In “description” field, enter custom account description for the account. Note down the description, as you will need it. Then, tap on “select all” under the menu choices. You need to click on description field one more time, and select ‘paste’ under the menu choices. You need to enter each email address you want to use. (Separate each email address with comma)

You need to tap on the description field and hit “select all” under the menu again. From the menu select “cut” and tap anywhere in the field. From popup menu, select “paste”. After, you have finished all the above-mentioned steps. Click the “Home” button.

Streaming Webmail

After webmail is setup on the iPhone, you need to look for options for reducing time you spend to check email… ActiveSync support enables you to receive notifications instantly when messages arrive in your inbox. Having this feature minimizes the time you spend time checking your email.

A smartphone is a device that not only allows you to make and receive calls but also offers a host of other features such as the ability to edit documents and check and send emails. A smartphone is essentially a hybrid of a PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) and a cell phone.

Using smartphones, you can stay one step ahead of everyone else. This single device alone can help you manage different facets of your life from surfing the web and scheduling meetings to keeping a track of the appointments and checking email. When you use a smartphone, you are less likely to miss an important phone call or email. If you are planning to buy a smartphone, here’s a list of things that you must look out for:

Call features: Smartphones are mostly used for business purposes. Thus, it is important that these phones have the primary cellular phone features of call waiting, voice dialing, speakerphone and conference calls.

Data Plan: Several regular phones allow you to access the Internet but a smartphone should be able to able to support 3G networks and offer you better speeds.

Productivity Apps: Smartphones are management devices and thus, they must have organizing applications such as calendar, organizer, task lists, notes, document editing, GPS, calculators and more. Smartphones today allow users to download third-party apps to help them customize the phone as per their requirements.

QWERTY keyboard: Most people need a smartphone with a QWERTY keyboard (similar to the one on your computer) either as physical keys or as a display on the touch screen.

Multimedia: The phone should have the ability to record audio and video with good clarity. Also, it should have a high resolution camera (more than 2 mega pixel).

Multi utility: A smartphone should be able to synchronize with your computer allowing you to increase your overall efficiency and performance.

Messaging: Regular cell phones can also send and receive messages but a smartphone should be able to syndicate with your professional and personal email accounts. Certain smartphones can support several email accounts and even popular instant messaging services.

Technical and Physical specifications: A good smartphone should be compact but still have good display. Also, the battery life should be sufficient to last for at least one whole day.

These features distinguish a smart phone from a regular cell phone and you must make sure that your smartphone is equipped with these.
