Chelsea captain John Terry is a subject of interest from various Chinese clubs, reports the Mirror.

According to the report, Terry was a big hit in China when he went on an ambassadorial tour of Guangzhou last summer and received several offers from Chinese clubs during the summer.

The 34-year-old has slipped down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge this year, and might be tempted to leave if he receives a good offer.

Terry, who had a fantastic season at Stamford Bridge last year, has been dropped by Jose Mourinho for the recent games after some below-par performances at the beginning of the season.

The Mirror also reports that Turkish club Fenerbahce are also interested in the defender.

Chelsea are set to sign former Milan goalkeeper Marco Amelia on a short-term deal to provide cover for the injured goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

The Belgian goalkeeper is set to miss out on football at least till December and manager Jose Mourinho wants to have an experienced back-up to current first choice Asmir Begovic, at his disposal.

Amelia, who is a free agent at present, has made 41 appearances for AC Milan over a four-year spell before leaving the Rossoneri last year.

He then had a short spell at Serie B club Perugia last year. The 33-year-old was also a part of 2006 World Cup winning Italian squad and has made nine appearances for the Azzurri.

Against Aston Villa there was one player in particular that stood out for all the wrong reasons. The young German defender Emre Can looked unsure and out of place. He perfectly summed up his manager’s predicament.

It feels particularly harsh to criticise Can when his age is taken in consideration. At only 21 he has a long future ahead of him. This isn’t an exposé saying he’s a complete fraud, it’s pointing out he’s not the man Liverpool require right now.

Being seen as a utility player can be a burden. Emre only need ask his new teammate James Milner the problems that come when a manager thinks you can play anywhere. It makes a player an invaluable member of the squad without ever becoming a must-have in the team.

The young German can play at full back, defensive midfielder or as we saw on Saturday, a centre back. It’s usually best practise to allow a youngster to become an expert in one role before developing secondary and tertiary positions. Having stared out as a defensive midfielder this still looks to be his most natural role. Unfortunately it isn’t one he’s made his own for Liverpool.

He’s had over 30 games for the Anfield club and he finds himself in development purgatory. Fans of the Merseyside team can’t defend his age when they’ve written off Raheem Sterling, who is a year younger. In this time he could have been a figurehead in phase two of Brendan’s plans. After reaching the Champions League but requiring subtle reshaping with the loss of star man Luis Suarez, the opportunity was available to many to become necessities.

The Aston Villa performance underlined that Can is going to come up short. As a player familiar with deep midfield roles distribution should be the strongest element to his game, however, on Saturday he made erratic clearances and poor judgements in this area. If he isn’t a natural centre back certain deficiencies for the role can be forgiven, but if his bread and butter attributes are failing then his long term role in the team has to be questioned.

Lucas Leiva, even with Sturridge bagging two goals, was Liverpool’s best player on Saturday. He is a player most were ready to see the back of and playing in a position the promising young German international should have laid claim to by now.

Instead he still requires nurturing and development in a team that is desperate at the moment. Rodgers doesn’t have the luxury to have pet projects during this time. He needs instant results. It’s feasible Emre can’t be accommodated.

And if Brendan does go, a new manager may see no reason to tolerate a utility man that lacks a strong area.

With Jürgen Klopp and Carlo Ancelotti waiting in the wings, you can’t blame the Anfield faithful for wishing a few bad results on their team, in exchange for a manager with the pedigree of the two just mentioned.

A narrow victory against Aston Villa at home is hardly going to propel a title bid for Liverpool, if anything it confirms that another season of mediocrity awaits them. People were almost surprised by their victory at the weekend, which has allowed fans to be optimistic ahead of the Merseyside derby.

However, it is against the character of Liverpool football club to be ‘optimistic’ or ‘hopeful’ of a derby day victory.

Unfortunately, this is the attitude that currently surrounds Anfield at the moment. Liverpool have gone from title contenders to plucky underdogs in the space of two years. It seems that Liverpool are always a club in transition, although Rodgers is into his fourth season, so where is the consistency?

The Reds have had their difficulties, with Suarez and Gerrard leaving and the injury problems to Daniel Sturridge it hasn’t been easy.

Nonetheless, Rodgers has spent more money than any of his predecessors, so surely, as he once infamously quipped – he should be challenging for the league. It would be interesting to see how different things would be if Klopp or Ancelotti were given the time and finances Rodgers has had during his spell at Liverpool.

One thing Rodgers has done which shouldn’t be overlooked is give youth a chance to flourish in his side. A lot has been made of the fact that Liverpool will not line up with any locally born players against Everton this weekend.

There seems to be a lack of local talent coming through for Liverpool, although let’s not forget local lad Jon Flannagan, who is currently injured on the sidelines.

The Aston Villa win will not be a turning point. The Reds have been here many times before with Brendan Rodgers, surely by now the fans have learnt that he’ll never walk – so moan.

For once Liverpool need to show some ambition with their managerial appointments, and not hire the next attainable British manager in the hope that he’s going to become the next Bill Shankly.

Man United made a similar mistake when they hired David Moyes instead of trying to hire Jose Mourinho, and look how much they have regressed since.

Liverpool missed a huge opportunity this summer, they could have hired an established coach and given him plenty of money to sort things out. Instead they have just prolonged the agony by allowing Rodgers to improvise the duration of his Liverpool career, in the hope that something’s going to come off.

Juan Mata scored one and assisted another as Manchester United recovered from a goal down to beat Wolfsburg 2-1 on in the Champions League Group B fixture at home on Wednesday night.

United were on the back foot after just four minutes of play at Old Trafford after a Daniel Caligiuri goal. Mata won and scored a penalty in the 34th minute to level things before setting up Chris Smalling with an incredible flick eight minutes into the second half.

While Anthony Martial, Memphis Depay, Wayne Rooney and David De Gea grab the spotlight, Mata’s role in United’s impressive run of form is often overlooked by everyone.

The Spaniard was spot on yesterday.He completed 98% of his passes and created 5 chances.

The Spain international has been in superb form since the start of the new Premier League season and has scored or assisted more than half of United’s goals thus far.

His quick-thinking and vision to set up Memphis Depay against Sunderland on Saturday’s 3-0 win tells the whole story about his skills and competencies. While most players would have loved to volley that ball, Mata took the safe route to register a goal in final moments of the game.

Yesterday’s flick that pulled things level for the Red Devils was another classic display of Mata’s game intelligence and cleverness.

Louis van Gaal has given Mata freedom to drift to central areas which allows Valencia or Dariman to overlap and usually creates havoc in the opposition defence.

Mata has directly involved in 29 goals at United since his 37.1 m move from Chelsea.

After keeping clean sheets away at Stoke, at home to Bournemouth and at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium, the Reds’ tight rearguard has lost its frugal edge over the course of the past four games, with the ball having hit the back of the net on nine occasions in the league, while League Two outfit Carlisle United even managed to score at Anfield.

Tonight, they face FC Sion in the Europa League, a team from a Swiss town with a population of 33,000 people – fewer people that can fit inside Anfield – and who have won the Swiss league twice in their 116 year history. So this should be a good chance for a fresh start and a match to get the form going. Instead they’ll look upon it with some trepidation – after a draw away to Bordeaux in the first group game, defeat tonight would leave Liverpool in some danger in the competition. Still, even with the ‘hysteria’ surrounding the club, Liverpool should have enough to win the game.

But that’s the problem. Liverpool should have enough firepower in their squad to win most games. Daniel Sturridge is back in action, and new signings like Roberto Firmino, James Milner and Nathaniel Clyne should have the quality to bring Liverpool on. So Brendan Rodgers shouldn’t really be in fear of losing his job, his team should be doing the business, and I should be writing about how they might fear the visit of Swiss minnows in their current state.

Roy Hodgson’s tenure as Liverpool manager was marred – among other things – by defeat in the League Cup to League Two side Northampton Town. Rodgers just about avoided such disgrace as his side managed to beat League Two side Carlisle United on penalties.

Last week’s win over Aston Villa has gone some way to getting the side back on track, but questions still remain over the manager’s future.  And with good reason.

Last season – and even over the summer – Liverpool fans were holding out hope that their club could entice Jurgen Klopp to take over the reins. The young and stylish manager would instantly become a fans’ favourite, but his brand of hard-hitting pressing and counter attack football would suit Liverpool down to the ground. The fans would love it, and English football would love it.

But over the last few days the rumbling has turned to another out of work behemoth of club management, Carlo Ancelotti. Whether this is just paper talk or whether there is any truth in it, only time will tell. But it does show mounting pressure on the Liverpool boss. Weathering storms is part and parcel of football management, just look at the storms Arsene Wenger and especially Jose Mourinho have been weathering since the start of the season. But this one feels different. Rodgers has been under huge pressure for a year, and the team haven’t yet progressed.

Maybe it’s going to come. Maybe Liverpool’s new signings will click and make a dramatic run up the table. It’s worth remembering that last season, Liverpool went on an unbeaten run from mid-December to March in order to give themselves a shot at Champions League football. Maybe they can do something similar again.

And we also have to remember the injuries Rodgers has had to deal with – Sturridge is back, but still wrapped in cotton wool but now Jordan Henderson is out with a broken bone in his foot. Things aren’t easy for Rodgers.

But that’s the dilemma for any club owner. To stick with your man or to change around. If they change now, and the new man turns things around, he’ll need money and the backing to overhaul his squad in January, and the same problems might return – a team in transition, new players joining and needing time to gel, and the team having to get used to a new style of play. But if Rodgers can’t turn it around, and the board do have to sack him, every game they keep him in charge is a waste of a game.

Tonight is a big game for Rodgers. If his team can build on their win at the weekend, a win tonight sets them up for the derby this weekend – and a derby day win will boost morale even more. It could be a catalyst for success. Defeat, on the other hand, plunges Liverpool back into the depths of despair and ‘hysteria’ and makes the derby even more important for Rodgers.

Defeat tonight, to Swiss minnows and on the back of how close they came to being dumped out of the League Cup by Carlisle, could be catastrophic for Rodgers given the media furore and the storm he’s currently weathering.

The next two games are make or break.

Mark Clattenburg shouldn’t be held solely accountable for Saturday’s mistakes, but he was also the man in charge when Tottenham scored a goal against Manchester United, only for Roy Carroll to famously palm it out of the harm’s way when it was two yards over the line and it not be given. Perhaps Clattenburg is a pioneer for ensuring technology is introduced.

But the ref’s job is a thankless task. The game moves too fast for one human trying to keep up with play, and assistants placed further away, to correctly judge it 100% of the time. With the introduction of goal line technology we took a step in the right direction. Now we need to complete the journey. It’s time for video replays to used and provide the sort of assistance the referee desperately needs.

For years FIFA, namely Sepp Blatter, was against any form of technology enhancing the game. They had the vision that grass roots football could be officiated no differently than the World Cup final. It was a romantic idea but there’s too much at stake in the professional game to allow human error to shape destinies any longer.

It’s estimated 30% of incorrect decisions could be ruled out with video technology assisting the referee. Many people like the way a bad call from the ref or a linesman changes a match. I’d say there’s enough excitement in the game to remove illegal goals or those prone to simulation. There’s no need or place for either.

Another concern is it will slow the game, that the current flow is part of football’s charm. I say it would actually be quicker for a video review panel to slow down a replay, determine the correct form of action, and buzz the referee accordingly compared to the current situation where the ref and his assistant have a speculative chat on the side lines. We’d speed up the game, going from minutes to thirty seconds.

That sounds overly optimistic but fans in the pub see, and judge, an incident long before the man with the whistle in his mouth has moved toward his incorrect declaration.

Certain rules would have to be applied. The panel would have a set period of time to buzz the officials before having to accept the window of appeal has closed. This would show that decisions too close to call even with a replay should be left to the ref’s discretion. Note how I’ve used the term “Panel.” It would have to be a team of three, each with a vote, this way there’s always a majority and any calls of human error from the person watching the video are diluted.

Football leads sport in many respects, it seems ridiculous they continue to offer their officials no protection on the pitch. Video replays haven’t harmed other sports, there’s no reason to fear their introduction into the beautiful game.

Cost needn’t be a consideration. The rollout costs of goal line technology were for a brand new system. Video replays are already used, they just aren’t shared with the match day officials. If the implementation is restricted to the top flight it spares lower leagues the financial burden. We’ve already created tiers of officiating with the partial introduction of goal line technology to just the top leagues and tournaments. For the same reasons video reviews can be slowly rolled out to those best placed to facilitate them.

Think how lovely it’d be to remove offside goals (and the excuses they afford the punished team), diving, violent conduct and off-the-ball incidents. Goal line technology has opened the door to a world that eradicates unnecessary mistakes. Football needs to fully embrace all new methods at its disposal.

The German tactician has been out of work since leaving BVB at the end of last season, with a year’s sabbatical thought to be his plan.

However, with Rodgers struggling at the helm at Liverpool, links between the charismatic German and the Merseyside club have been bubbling away of late, much to the delight of many Kopites.

And reports claim that Klopp is set to travel to England over the course of the next week where talks with potential suitors could take place.

It’s understood that there have not been official discussions between Liverpool and the former Dortmund manager as of yet, though.

Arsenal are another Premier League team to have been linked with Klopp in the past.
