How Fast Can You Throw A Wiffleball?

Last night, I was clocked throwing a wiffleball 99 mph. That might not sound as impressive as Cincinnati Reds pitcher Aroldis Chapman throwing a baseball 105 mph, but it was fast enough for me. OK, I was also clocked throwing 7 mph and 23 mph, so there were clearly a few bad readings on my new radar gun, including the 99 mph reading. Most of my pitches were clocked in the low 60s, which isn't that bad considering that I didn’t warm up and I haven’t pitched in about a year.

I'm a sports commissioner, and according to a recent Yahoo Sports article, I make less money than Gary Bettman. He made more money than me last year too. It's tough for me to admit that, mostly because I think I do a better job than the NHL Commissioner, but then I realized that most of us make less than $7.2 million per year.

So summer is winding down, and you're looking for something to do before you're stuck indoors again. Have you played any wiffleball yet? If not, don't worry. There's still time, and everybody has to start somewhere. Even us. When we started, we were all just a bunch of guinea pigs in an experiment. Over time, we learned what worked well, and what should be avoided. We tested the heck out of everything until we decided on the best way to play, and we continued to make changes when needed. I originally thought about starting a BASEketball league, but I'm not the most intimidating person, and knew I'd struggle with psych-outs, so I decided to go with wiffleball instead. I think it worked out pretty well for us.

There’s 104 Days of Summer Vacation

There's a 104 days of summer vacation, and school comes along just to end it. So the annual problem for our generation, is finding a good way to spend it. Like maybe... playing wiffleball. OK, so we borrowed a few lines from the Phineas and Ferb opening song, which is performed by wiffleball fans Bowling for Soup (above), who took the time to pose with a wiffleball for us. Phineas and Ferb always seem to do a bunch of cool stuff, but to our knowledge, they haven't played wiffleball yet. There's still time though, even for you.

A-Rod Hits 600th Home Run – What’s the Big Deal?

On Wednesday, Alex Rodriguez, or "Al", as Joe Girardi referred to him, skipped Yankees team photo day and went on to hit his 600th career home run off Shaun Marcum, the only active Major League Baseball player that spells his first name the same way that I do. While that sounds impressive, if you look at the numbers a little more closely, you'll see that Major League Wiffleball Home Run King Mike Breen is a much better home run hitter than A-Rod. A-Rod homers on average every 14.5 at bats, which is disappointing in comparison to Mike Breen who averaged one home run every 5.28 at bats throughout his career.

Wiffleball Player Goes “Pro”

He was one of our original six league members. So it's fitting that Joe Yerdon is now working as the lead writer/editor for Pro Hockey Talk on NBCSports.com. Over the years, Joe has dislocated his shoulder several times, and his wiffleball career seems to be over. Still, Joe will continue to get hits, but they won't be with a wiffleball bat, and they won't help his career .308 batting average. Instead, those hits will be from visitors reading his hockey articles.

Canada Day

We mentioned in our last article that it's a good idea to add special elements to your wiffleball games to make them even better. Today is a perfect example -- it's Canada Day.
One easy thing to do is to wear a hockey jersey. If you don't have a hockey jersey, you can get one here. We’re not saying to go crazy and start pitching hockey pucks, or wearing skates. However, if you could somehow pull-off a wiffleball game on ice in the summer, I’d love to see that.

Stephen Strasburg’s Wiffleball-Like Stats

He's thrown a little over 12 innings so far, and Stephen Strasburg's stats look more like wiffleball numbers than baseball numbers. 2 starts, 2 wins. He's recorded 37 outs, 22 by strikeout. He's given up 6 hits and 2 of those were home runs. His strikeout-to-walk ratio is 22-to-5. He allows less than one baserunner an inning.
