People browsing online have endless choices – they can find and buy a product within minutes, do their banking, socialize, learn and view all kinds of different content.

Where does video fit online? What compels people to sit and watch a video for minutes at a time, and if you own a blog or business, should you be putting your own videos online?

When can video go wrong?

When little thought has gone into the needs of the end-user of a product, things can go very wrong. A video made for the sake of making a video is a poor choice if the video was made for promotion purposes. For example, if you own a tropical resort and you want to create a video to promote the features of your resort – it wouldn’t be helpful to make a video filmed during a storm and narrated by a person with a deadpan voice. People would avoid your resort on the strength of a video like that!

Remember – just because you can doesn’t mean that you should! Your business or blog’s branding and reputation online can suffer with video that just doesn’t work.

To illustrate, here’s a video we had made to show how a bad video can made you look, well, bad:

Putting video online – Pros and Cons

The following video is a discussion on the best uses and the downsides of video.

What are the best things about video online? Will people sit through posts on a blog that are posted as video? When do personalities on video turn people off watching? Is it better to break up a long video in smaller chunks?

Why video?

Video is one of the things that can take up a great deal of time for visitors online – video can take longer to get a message across than text.

That said, people are watching video in greater numbers and for greater periods of time than ever before. In 2011, YouTube announced they had reached the over 3 billion views per month mark – which they state is the equivalent of nearly half the world’s population watching a YouTube video each day.
http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2011/05/thanks-youtube-community-for-two-big.html

Video can be a very useful tool – and it is most useful when it meets the needs of the end-user, whether the user is looking for entertainment or information.

What can video provide than text can’t?

Video can provide things that text can struggle with:

Clarity – especially when demonstrating something
Personality – Facial expressions, voice, tone, inflection and the individual style of the person speaking
Entertainment - Humans are very visual and they respond to video on many levels
Engagement – Due to all the above, video can engage and hold attention longer than text

Video online has many different purposes:

– Video as a how-to
– Video as a series of testimonials
– Video as company news
– Video as a product promotion
– Video as a buzz-creator
– Video for a travel site
– Video as entertainment
– Video as a social medium

More information:
http://make-website.com/adding-video.php

Conclusion

Video is a great tool and is growing in popularity – but when the end-user isn’t considered, it can at best be annoying and at worst hurt the reputation of the video’s creator.

I am often asked exactly what I’d use if I were starting out new and making my own website today.

What would I use to complete the picture as easily and quickly as possible? And at low-cost?

And so – here it is. All the good stuff!

It’s a very solid plan that will suit a great many websites – from personal to business.

One

WordPress

Why?

Because it’s an amazing website creation tool.

WordPress is a CMS (Content Management System) that is free and has fantastic support. If you’re new to WordPress, it’s not as easy as a simple website builder to master, but it’s worth it. There are plugins and widgets that can enable you to do an incredible amount of things – and these are also free.

Want to create a business website, a store, a reviews site, a book review site, a personal blog or a business blog? Need multiple menus, the ability to show different content on different pages, have people comment on your pages or posts and a robust CMS that just works? WordPress excels at all of these.

Many well-known, large websites use WordPress.

Two

Hostgator

Why?

Because Hostgator is the best web hosting provider that I’ve found. I’ve been able to grow my websites since being with Hostgator without experiencing problems with support and hours of downtime each month.

Because Hostgator offers live chat support around the clock. (It’s extremely frustrating being with some web hosts whom only offer email support – especially if they take hours or days to respond and if their hired support are so poorly trained they don’t understand your question in the first place.)

Because they will move your website from your old host for free. (Conditions apply)

Because they have fantastic uptime. My websites are up and functioning all the time – if they’ve been down for a few minutes at all, I haven’t noticed.

And if you want to use WordPress, installation is easy. Click a button and you’re there.

(Use the code: 1CENT if buying through the above special offer!)

Three

MailChimp or Aweber

Why?

Because an email list is one of the most valuable things your website can have. Some say the most valuable. It has often been reported that there are much higher conversions from email promotions as opposed to online promotions. In other words, you can sell more with an email list.

Many say Aweber is best as it has more sophisticated features. The lowest plan on Aweber is $20 per month – which is not bad at all when you consider the value of the list you can create. But MailChimp is a great choice also and is fully featured – and free for the first 2000 subscribers. What could you do with 2000 subscribers for your website’s newsletter?

Four

Box.net or DropBox.com

Why?

Because backup is important and Box.net and Dropbox are great online backup solutions.

I had my computer supply blow up recently, and I realized just how much I need to backup my files. I also have a laptop, but it’s a machine that can break or get destroyed. Storage in the cloud is safeguarded as it’s not confined to a particular server.

I can keep copies of important stuff on my computer’s hard drive and I can send backups of my WordPress sites there. Backing up your website or blog is crucial. I currently only use the free allowance on Box.net – 5GB is nothing to sneeze at!

Five

PageLines PlatformPro

Why?

Because Platform Pro is an incredibly versatile theme for a WordPress site.

With Platform Pro, I can create websites the way in which I want and the way in which a site will function best – without any coding.

Change layouts, colors, fonts, put sidebars to the left, to the right or across the page.

Special features such as banners, boxes, carousels, sliders, banners and much more. Put what you want on which page you want.

You can also grab a simpler version of Pagelines PlatformPro for free at their website or at WordPress.org.

Six

Elance, freelancer.com, 99 Designs and fiverr.com

Why?

Because outsourcing frees up your time and allows you to grow your business – and I’ve tried Elance, Freelancer, 99 Designs and Fiverr and think they are all good (for different outsourcing needs.)

I don’t like to go too cheap when outsourcing. Yes, you have articles written for $2 each and yes, you can have your website designed for $20 – but will the quality be there? I personally don’t outsource any of my writing, but I do outsource research and coding from time to time and am planning to outsource a personal assistant.

I really like elance as I can browse through what they term talent, and get to know about individual people and see their work samples.

See how two guys in a garage built a business with Elance.

I like 99 Designs because the range of designs you get are impressive and of high quality, and if none suit, you don’t pay. Your online business or website deserves a professional logo. So do you actually get 99 designs for each project? Nope, but you do get an awful lot.

If I wanted little bits and pieces done, such as a cartoon graphic drawn, I’d head down to fiverr.com. You can even have a Facebook business page designed and created for you – yes for five bucks.

Summary

There’s much, much more involved creating, maintaining, promoting and growing a website than the above 6 things. But for me, they’ve have been the backbone of the majority of my websites – providing a sturdy foundation, allowing flexibility and growth, and carrying out some of the heavy lifting.

(Of course, the plan won’t suit every type of website I might choose to undertake, and it certainly won’t suit every type of website or business that you might choose.)

If you were paying attention, you might have noticed I mentioned more than 6 products in the list above In the end, I couldn’t decide between certain products – but there are just 6 things, or steps

Linkage

I only choose to partner with a company if I genuinely and completely love the product or service they have on offer. I’m happy to promote great stuff – Great stuff deserves a little promotion Some of the links above are partnered, and some are not.

Increasing numbers of mothers who are at home with children are either making money online or wondering how to do it.

It suits mothers because they can choose their own hours and work while children are sleeping or at school or daycare. Mothers who work are often termed Work At Home Moms (WAHMs) If they are in business for themselves, they are often referred to as mompreneurs.

For this post, I’ve collected links from great articles around the internet.

Everything from personal files to business files can be stored on the Cloud.

What is the Cloud?

Simply, the Cloud is online storage and backup. Although these two things have been around on the internet for many years – the Cloud is a much more integrated approach, with solutions and tools for businesses.

How can it help me?

You can keep copies of your work on remote servers. Having a second hard drive is good for backup, but what if a catastrophe cause both the computer and the second hard-drive to fail? You can lose everything.

You can collaborate on projects with other people. Only those with the username and password can access the files.

You can backup your website – such as a WordPress or Joomla site – and send the backup straight to the Cloud.

Can I run a business online through the Cloud?

Yes, definitely and many large businesses do. One of the big advantages is that the businesses do not have to buy servers (and provide space, electricity and maintenance for the servers) for their terabytes of data.
There are hefty costs involved if you have a lot of data to store. However, an increasing amount of small businesses use free cloud storage for aspects of their work.

Free Cloud storage

Dropbox
With Dropbox, you get 2GB storage for free.
Saves versions of your files – so if you over-write a file on your computer (and haven’t we all made that mistake!) you can get the lost file back from your Dropbox account. It keeps old versions for up to a month.
Works with mobile phones such as iphone, Android and Blackberry.
http://www.dropbox.com/

Box.net
Box offers 5GB of free storage. That’s 3GB more than Dropbox. I’ve heard users say that like Dropbox for its simplicity, so perhaps it has an edge there.
You can sync files to Box, turn files into online workspaces, post comments and assign and manage tasks.
http://box.net

BackBlaze
BackBlaze promotes itself as the only online backup that doesn’t require you to choose files and filetypes. That’s sounding good – because simple is good
And if you need to upgrade from free to umlimited storage, $5 per month sounds awfully cheap. Maybe too cheap – although the BackBlaze people seem to have it figured out.
Also – BackBlaze can find your lost or stolen computer. Well, that’s unexpected, but kind of cool.
http://www.backblaze.com/

There’s a lot of poor websites and blogs out there – outdated design, mystery-navigation, grammar gaffes, weak content and general weirdness.
But a lot can be forgiven if the person behind the blog is genuine.

The number one thing that makes a blog stink is the lack of anything that’s real.

How do you know a blog lacks anything real?
Because of these things:

Paid-to-blog
Being paid to blog is an option to make some cash. A stay-at-home-mom/mum can make money for example by reviewing family products that they have been sent.
But raving on about products that you’ve never used and maybe never even heard of before is a strange thing to do.
You could be helping to put wrong information out there.
If the company you’re working for in a paid-to-blog capacity allows you freedom to give a negative review, that is better. (Although I can imagine that might be pressure to turn in a positive review in order to retain your working relationship with the company.) I have seen paid-to-blog opportunities in which the blogger is not allowed to give a negative review.

Affiliate advertising
There is nothing wrong with affiliate advertising. Where it gets wrong is when someone lies and says wonderful things about a product or service they’ve never used (or have used and don’t use anymore due to the fact it wasn’t any good.)
A case in point – there were people who hadn’t used the Acai Berry weightloss product – but they promoted it anyway. To do so, they would have had to ignore all the complaints filing in about the product and the sales methods of the company selling the product.

Dead celebrity
Someone famous died and there’s controversy over his or her death. Knowing there’s going to be a surge of people searching for information about their idol – some people race to set up websites with thin content and then load them with advertising. And when the rush of interest wanes – the website wanes too and the domain name expires.

And then there are deceased celebrities for whom public interest is lasting – such as Micheal Jackson (Died in 2009) and Kurt Cobain (Died in 1994). For them, many of the grab-a-buck websites remain, but are densely packed with ads in a desperate attempt to make a few dollars a year from people.

If you are truly a fan of Nirvana for instance, you wouldn’t be using Cobain’s death in that way. Kurt Cobain disdained commercialism, and as a fan, you’d know that.
And besides, it’s just creepy to try to capitalize on someone who died with no intention to create anything genuine.

Content Spinning
Content Spinning is taking articles and attempting to make them appear new and original by changing a percentage of the words. Sometimes the re-written versions of the articles are worse than the original. If you’ve read stitled, overly-formal, weird-grammar articles – there’s a possibility the article was ‘spun’. ‘Spun’ content is often sold along with mass-produced blogs – the blogs are created with the intention of selling them straightaway as a ‘package’.

Auto-blogging
Auto-blogging is when you set up your blog to automatically pull in content from around the internet. The problem with this is that your blog has zero original content and can also look dead. Worse, the content includes articles on all kinds of unrelated things.
Auto-blogging can lead to people reporting you to Google or your web host for ‘pinching’ their content.
It’s possible that an autoblog could be useful – it if gathers information from around the internet on a particular subject. And if the entire article isn’t posted (just an excerpt instead) people could read the original article at the website it came from.
Some autoblog software pulls content from article-sharing sites – and pulling articles from these sites isn’t going to annoy any website owners as they want the articles spread!

If you’re going to spend time and energy on a blog – it’s worth thinking about the future of your blog and start out in the right place from the beginning.

Why is it important to start out right? Can’t I just change my blog or blog name later on if I want to?

Yes you can change your blog or the name of your blog. Sometimes blogs do change direction. But sometimes if you have subjects that are very different to each other, it’s best to separate them into two different blogs.
And what happens if you change the name is that all the internal and external links of your website get broken – because the page names (URLs) are different. You can spend lots of time redirecting every single on your blog to its corresponding new URL, and if you have hundreds of pages, this will be a big job!

Also, some people have reported experiencing a drop in traffic and web page rankings after changing their blog/website name and carrying out redirects.

EXAMPLE:

Original blog name:
bettyboopteacups.somefreeblog.com

New blog name:
bettyboopteacups.com

In the above example, the blog URL has changed – which means every single link in the whole website has changed, resulting in broken links. It also means that any links from other websites pointing to the blog have been broken.

What’s the difference between a free blog and a self-hosted blog?

A free blog from platforms such as Blogger and WordPress.com come with free hosting and you don’t need to install the blog – you just sign up and it’s there!

With a self-hosted blog, you buy your own hosting from a web host provider and then install your blog yourself. Confusingly, most people use WordPress as their choice for a self-hosted blog – and WordPress is also the free blogging platform. (Just remember, you get your free WordPress blog from wordpress.com and you get your free self-hosted WordPress blog from wordpress.org. These days, it’s simple to install your own WordPress blog on your own hosting – you don’t even need to go to WordPress to get it. It’s just a one-click install that you’ll find in web hosting accounts that have Fantastico.)

Should I use a free blog or a self-hosted blog?

There’s lot of different answers to that. You can try a free blog but pay to have it pointed at a domain name of your choice – and then that way, if you choose to move to a self-hosted blog later on, the blog name and URLs will stay the same.

If you already have a business, you could just have your blog on a section of your website. You won’t need to worry about the name of your blog then – you could simply call it ‘blog’. (Most people understand what a blog link is when they see it on a website. If you call your blog something other than ‘blog’, people may not realise it’s your blog. People often like to see a human face behind a business and will check out a blog to gain that personal touch.)

Lots of businesses have a free blog on Blogger. For example, many literary agents have professional websites but a free blog on Blogger. That way, the business retains a professional image and it’s understood that the free blog is a tool for reaching out to clients, prospective clients or the industry in general.

It’s also possible to run a business on a free blog platform with a free domain name – many do and it’s quite acceptable to do so, especially if your business is indie.

One of the big advantages of a Blogger blog is that it’s extremely simple to set up and run. You don’t have to update the software – it’s automatic.

Easy Peasy! Hosting is already there – you don’t need to do anything.

You have to decide on a good host and pay for hosting.

Updating

Simple! It’s all automatic – you don’t have to do anything.

You have to keep your blog updated. These days, this is simple – you can simply click the update button in the Fantastico installer in your hosting panel.

Self-hosted blogs also have community – although it can be much more business-oriented than with a free-blogging community.

Moving from hobby blog to professional blog

You may have the choice to pay for hosting at your free-blogging platform. Paying for hosting this way may cost you more than the hosting associated with a self-hosted blog (particularly if you have more than one blog/website.)

You may be able to import your blog posts to a self-hosted blog. This can be messy if the URLS have changed – although not so if you have pointed your blog at a paid domain name from the start.

This will be a simple change if you alredy have the domain name you want. You can just change the theme of your blog to a more professional one, and you’re done.

How you can promote your blog and get more traffic with Networked Blogs

Networked Blogs is a social blogging network that is integrated with Facebook.

You can follow other blogs through Facebook and other people can follow your blog. You can use the Networked Blogs applications to set up ‘follow’ widgets directly on your blog.

How do I set up Networked Blogs?

1. You need a Facebook Profile
You’ll need your own Facebook profile set up. Many people already have a Facebook profile and so are good to go!

2. Go to Networked Blogs and click ‘Add Your Blog’
You can’t miss the big ‘Add your blog’ button on the home page

3. Networked Blogs verification
You can choose to ask your friends to verify you or you can choose to add code to your blog (which adds a widget to your blog.)
Adding the widget can prove difficult in some instances, such as if your blog theme doen’t include a sidebar or footer where you include the code.

4. Add the widget or the badge
If you decided to not to use friends verification but the widget isn’t working for you, you can choose the badge – which should give you less problems.
You choose ‘Install Widget’ or ‘Install Badge’
Copy the code, but don’t close the page because you’ll need to go back there. Go to your blog and add the code to your sidebar (or footer)

5. Verify
After you’ve done added the code - be sure to come back to the page where you copied the code and click Verify – which is a big button towards the bottom of the page.
You’re done! Now you just need to get followers!

Selling on Facebook is a way of tapping into a massive market.

This type of market comes with social proof (People are more likely to buy something they see their own friends or family buying.) You can run your business on Facebook, in an environment where people like to stay and linger – and where they often recommend products and services to other Facebook friends.

The latest report by Forbes reports that “Facebook Fans are 41% more likely to recommend a brand and 28% more likely to continue using them. Plus a Facebook Fan is worth on average 136.38% and spends $71.84 more per year than non-Facebook fans.

Vendio

Payvment
When you launch a store, you join Payvment’s huge network of 60,000+ stores and get into our Facebook-wide shopping cart system that waves goodbye to abandoned shopping carts. Powered by Payvment’s “Open Cart Network” technology, your customers are able to complete their purchases from any storefront on Facebook.

In addition, you can easily spotlight other designers and showcase products from other Zazzle artists. Your friends can show their support by adding the app and showing your products on their profile. Whenever your products are purchased, you receive the normal royalty. In addition, you can enter your Zazzle username and password on the setting page in the app and receive a referral payment on any sales you generate if you are a part of the Zazzle Associates Program.

The Facebook Marketplace
You can sell your product on Facebook for free with Oodle. Sell cars, real estate, pets and more.
Oodle is marketing the marketplace as a ‘social marketplace’. There’s less anonymity because each listing is connected with a profile on Facebook. (The crimes(pdf) committed through the online marketplace, Craigslist have been highlighted in the Oodle blog.) There’s even a friends tab that you can check to see what your friends are selling.
Oodle also tweets their listings on Twitter.

Oodle provides consumers with a friendly local marketplace to buy, sell and trade. Oodle Pro, launched earlier this year, enables local property managers, real estate agents and car dealers to join the conversation by adding their identity and reputation on Facebook and Twitter to their local listings.

This list is more for those looking for some extra income, rather than a full-time income.

A big advantage of writing articles for websites is that you can do the work from home, in your own time and your own hours. You don’t have to spend time chasing clients for work or for payments.

You don’t need to run an office or advertise.

There are sites where you write articles and then wait to see if the ads bring you any shared income. I won’t be listing those – and wouldn’t recommend those either if you are serious about making some decent money through writing online.
