You know how right after you put on hand lotion and how you have to automatically wipe you hands off. That not so comfortable greasy feeling is just not what I call a great feeling. I've been using lotions that of course contain parabens and chemicals because it doesn't leave that oh so greasy feeling. Then I found magic in a little bottle.

This World Market exclusive is so great. And no parabens. I use it everyday morning and night and I have totally noticed a difference. And the scent is heavenly. I might have to get more of the products in this line. They have bubble bath, shower cream, and even body scrub.

I was just at Target today and I again like every other time forgot to bring my reusable bags. I still to this day tell people who didn't know that for every bag you bring to use to tote your purchases out of the store you get a discount of 5 cents. Now some of you might think, 5 cents that's nothing. To a lot of you like myself, 5 cent is 5 cents and I'll take it.

But why do I always forget them. I never remember to pack them in my trunk for these random occasions I go to Target. I never leave them by the door to take with me. I need to find a way to do that. But Target not only has helped with their reusable bag campaign but also did good for the earth too. They deferred the equivalent of 34 million plastic bags–more than 2.3 million pounds of plastic–from landfills.

Here's what Target says about their new recycling program in the store:
In 2010, we launched the most comprehensive guest-facing recycling program of any major retailer.

The purpose of our new recycling program was to bring our commitment to recycling out of the backroom and into the forefront. By making our recycling programs easily accessible to both our guests and our team members, we’re working together to make an even bigger impact.

For months, teams from across the company met weekly to ensure they were designing a program that would complement our existing recycling efforts, use processes already in place and make a positive environmental impact. Guests can now easily recycle, cans, glass and plastic bottles, plastic bags, and MP3 players, ink cartridges and cell phones right in their local Target store. Our guests’ recycled materials are then added to the materials we were already collecting—including corrugated cardboard, plastic shrink wrap, garment hangers and shopping carts—making our recycling program one of the most robust in the industry.

The teamwork paid off. By integrating the new processes with our existing recycling efforts in stores and distribution centers, the new program doesn’t add extra workload in the store. Teams collect the materials in the backroom, and they are returned to the distribution centers using trucks that are already making deliveries to our stores in order to maximize transportation efficiency.

A crucial part of the program was making sure the materials were handled responsibly and that we had a clear understanding of their final destination. For example, the plastic bags will be sold to a vendor to be made into composite decking.

We’ve already seen how our proactive efforts and program expertise is helping lawmakers make recommendations for future recycling and waste legislation. This recycling program has helped our government affairs team demonstrate that recycling is a strong alternative to all-out plastic bag bans in states that are considering ways to legislate sustainability.

So how much good is Target really doing? It’s too early to know exactly how much waste we will divert from landfills with the recycling program, but we anticipate that we could eliminate at least six million pounds of plastic bags, glass, plastic, aluminum beverage containers and electronics each year.

Where their recycling goes:

* Electronic waste is collected by a national vendor who resells them for reuse, refurbishing or recycling. Anything that can’t be reused is scrapped by certified companies that dispose of the materials responsibly.
* Cans/bottles/glass are taken back to distribution centers in trucks already making trips. The materials are then recycled by local recycling centers.
* Plastic bags are sold to a vendor who converts them into composite decking.
* Food overstock is donated to Feeding America. Every Target location is paired with a local Feeding America food bank so its donations stay in the community.
* Overstock pet food and supplies are donated to local animal shelters.
* During a store remodel, we recycle ceiling tiles, light bulbs and display shelving.

So remember your bags the next time you go to Target, not only will you be saving the Earth but also a little money.

Here's another thought that I'm sure doesn't cross people's mind. What happens to Pillows when you throw them away.

Pillows are rather a bulky product and often filled with synthetic fibers such as polyester. Based on changing a pillow once a year, hundreds of millions of pillows would head to landfill in the USA alone each year.

Most manufacturers state the life span of synthetic fill pillows is six months to two years. Foam and latex pillows last from 5 to 10 years. Whatever the life span, something needs to be done with them once they've reached the end of their useful life.

In preparation for re-using pillows, it's a great idea to use a pillow protector so that the polyester stuffing doesn't get soaked with a year's worth of drool :). It's also a good idea to wash the pillow first before re-purposing it. If it's really far gone and the casing is ripped, you can just wash the filling in a bucket.

Some folks have found a variety of ways to re-use pillows; here's few suggestions.

- Use the stuffing to make a new soft pillow firm (might save a few bucks)

- Your local animal shelter may be able to use them (check with the shelter first)

- Keep to one side as packing material for your next move

- Use as stuffing in toys

- Use as stuffing in throw cushions

- Stitch the sides and ends together of multiple synthetic fibre fill pillows to make a quilt.
Put a nice cover on it of course :).

You don't *have* to buy synthetic pillows either - there's quite a few more earth friendly pillow filling alternatives available - many of which you can just compost when you're done.

Cool ways to Aspirin besides pain

I never use Aspirin, but now there are new ways I should use it, besides for pain.

Healing the Household
Even if you prefer Advil or acetaminophen, it’s still worth keeping a bottle of regular aspirin in the house. Besides coming in handy for various aches and pains, aspirin is also helpful in several household applications.

Aspirin is highly effective at reducing the inflammation caused by bug bites and stings.

To ease swelling and itchiness, wet the area and rub an aspirin tablet on the spot.

Cut flowers will last longer if their water includes a crushed-up aspirin tablet.

Because it contains salicylic acid (the same active ingredient found in many anti-acne potions), aspirin also works to reduce the appearance of pimples and other blemishes. Rubbing an aspirin paste on a blemish will help dry it out and get rid of the redness.

If you find that your white T-shirts accumulate yellow deodorant stains in the armpits, aspirin can fix those, too. Crush a few pills, mix them with some warm water, and soak the stains in the solution before washing—the aspirin will make the shirts look as good as new.

Aspirin has also been recommended for reviving dead car batteries, eliminating dandruff, killing fungus spores in the garden, and removing chlorine buildup from the hair of people who swim frequently in pools.

Follow up: Perfume, DIY

As the article in my past blog post listed how all these things have way too many chemicals in it. Here's a recipe to make perfume yourself. Without the chemicals.

Here’s what you’ll need to get started:

Selection of your favorite essential oils
Vodka (go for organic if you can)
Distilled water
Vegetable glycerin

Pour 30ml (equals 1 oz) of the vodka into a dark glass bottle. Add no more than a total of 10 drops of your favorite essential oils to the bottle stirring slowly in between each drop (alternatively combine the vodka and essential oils in a glass cup with a spout and transfer to a dark glass bottle after the ingredients are mixed). Seal the glass bottle and keep in a dark place for 2 days.

Remove the bottle from its dark place and slowly add 2 tbsp of distilled water and shake the mix well. Add a few drops of vegetable glycerin which will keep the spray from drying out your skin. Seal the glass bottle again and keep it in a dark place for another 2 days. If you have a pretty glass spray bottle now is the time to transfer your new natural perfume creation to it.

Generally sky is the limit when selecting your essential oils, however I would suggest not mixing any florals (e.g. rose, geranium, neroli, jasmine, sandalwood, lemon balm, ylang ylang) with spicy or medicinal oils (e.g. ginger, black pepper, cinnamon leaf, clove, rosemary, Spanish sage, cedarwood, eucalyptus, etc). The reason for this is mostly therapeutic because mixing oils that have the opposite energetic effects (i.e. energizing and relaxing oils) confuses the scent. There are some commercial fragrances that mix across the two groups but it takes a really sophisticated and experienced nose to create them. When you’re starting out try to avoid mixing oils with opposite energetic effects.

For ideas to get you started mixing you can look at the ingredients in your favorite smelling natural beauty products. If you know what essential oils you’d like to mix but are unsure of how many drops to use of each below is a list of oils by various strengths. Some oils are top, middle, base notes or a can be a mix depending on what they are combined with. Top notes tend to hit you when you first smell the fragrance but fade the most quickly. The number next to each list of oils is the number of drops of that oil you should use in any particular blend to help assist you with the ratios. The higher the number of drops the lighter the fragrance of the oil.

4. bergamot, black pepper, lemon
3. cedarwood atlas, clary sage, frankincense, grapefruit, lavender, mandarin, marjoram (sweet or French)
2. cardamom, roman chamomile, eucalyptus, ginger, neroli, patchouli, rosemary, tea tree
1. geranium, lemongrass, peppermint, pine, rose otto, vetivert, ylang ylang

You don’t need to treat blending like a math equation; these are just guidelines to get you started. If you need some suggestions with your fragrance blending I’ve listed a few of my favorites below.

2 ginger, 4 bergamot, 2 cardamom: This blend is spicy and delicious. It’s what I imagine India would smell like.

2 jasmine, 2 ylang-ylang, 1 sandalwood, 1 rose, 2 vanilla extract: Sexy floral that will make people ask what you’re wearing and you can tell them “me!”

1 geranium, 4 lemon, 4 mint: Fresh summer scent that will pick you up when you feel a little down.

Any of the above recipes can be combined with 30ml of vodka. If you want to make a larger batch double the vodka to 60ml and double the drops of essential oils. It’s really important that you stick with the ratio of no more than 10 drops essential oil to 30ml vodka so that you don’t irritate your skin. Store your creations in a cool dark place or in the refrigerator if possible. Over time the essential oils will start to break down so throw away the perfume if it starts to smell funny. If you take good care of the perfume it can last up to a year. Happy mixing!

We always have problems in this household when it comes to hair care. I live in the "Sunshine State" of Florida. So I do have pity for all the family who live up north who are buried in snow while I open the windows in the afternoon in the 60's. So all of that stale air from people not opening their windows, can not be good for a person. The best way to get your indoor air clean is to open the windows. But now that pollen season is creaping up on us in Florida, we have to keep our windows closed too. Let alone the neighbor who keeps burning their lawn shrubs that get that smokey nice smell to our air.

Now the best way to naturally clean your indoor air is plants. Not air freshener, not candles (although soy candles aren't bad to use for the ambiance.) The plants as we learned in grade school take the CO2 or the bad air and recycle it back into good air or oxygen. Now I, unlike my mother do not have a green thumb. I keep forgetting to water my plants. Or it might be I put the plant where I never go past. But this would be the best thing to do. According to Planet Green, even the least possible gardeners can make a simple one.

And all of you people lost in the snow, a way to get rid of your winter blues, start your own garden. Making plants can help you clean your indoor air that has been coupe up in there.
