first up is the client, Daygame.

I’ve been bought in by Daygame owner Andy Yosha to edit the footage he and his crew film of their training. I also provide post production work with colour correction and grading, as well as some sound correction work from their location shooting. I then transcode the footage to it’s final destination which currently is web distribution with the video sharing sites, Vimeo and Youtube.

the record label Sub Slayers

At the time of writing this post, this particular 3minute music promotional video is unpublished. In addition to creating the digital artwork (as seen on the right hand side of the video included) I’ve been working on some styled, yet simple short promotional videos to help promote the label, Sub Slayers, and their releases. Increasingly video is being used to help promote everything these days as more and more people are getting onto Facebook (check out their Root Music page which I designed) and picking up the new gen of media savvy phones, optimised by the iPhone. The videos aren’t just an image of the artwork with fade in/fade out on the audio. They have been developed a little further, with some motion design segments, very much on the less is more tip.

sevenzero, the commissioned AV piece by Tate Britain / “Quiet Voices”

Other than those lucky few who were at the premiere screening back in January of this year at Tate Britain or at the Digital City event in March. I’m still stunned by not only being asked to provide a piece for the event, but also the feedback received from the screening. Everything you see and hear in this 1minute excerpt, the entire piece, was produced by me, from shooting the footage, to the sound design and final look. I’ll be putting up the full 7min piece shortly.

fashion label, Sample Remix

I’ve been working with the fashion label, Sample Remix, for a while now, right from the conception of the logo and initial branding through to the recent redesign of the label website. Included in my showreel here are the teaser trailer for the Acedia fashion collection, as well as 90seconds of footage from the final prequel video that was screened at the Festival of Sins event in October. The performance was designed to be an audiovisual one, that went beyond just being a catwalk collection to more of a performance based piece.

article: Creative Review – UK designers: white, (mostly) male, 38 and multiplying

The Design Council has published its latest survey of the UK design industry. Numbers of designers have grown nearly a third since 2005, are 60% male, 93% white and most likely to be 38 years old.

The Design Council estimates that there are now 232,000 designers employed in the UK. Astonishingly, this is up 29% on 2005, the date of the last survey. The number of freelancers is up nearly a third and now represents 65,900 individuals. 82,500 designers work in consultanices and 83,600 work in-house.

There are now 10,800 UK design consultancies (a decrease of 13% compared to 2005).

In terms of discipline, communications design dominates, with 62% of all designers working in that area. Only 11% of designers work in product and industrial design, which is still coonsiderably more than fashion and textiles’ 2%.

Geographically, London and the south-east dominate – 40% of UK design businesses are located there. Next comes the rather unspecific ‘east’ at 10%, west midlands at 8% and Yorkshire & Humber, north west, south west and Scotland all at 7%.

The financial figures reveal just how small most design businesses are in the UK. An astonishing 49% of all UK design businesses are described by the Design Council as having ‘a fee income/budget of less than £50k’ per year. A further 24% earn between £50k and £100k – so that’s 73% earning under £100k a year. Only 3% earn £1 million or more.

And design studios are small in terms of numbers too. Almost 90% have 10 or fewer designers. 70% employ between one and four designers. Businesses are also quite young – 37% have been going three years or less. 60% six years or less.

Demographically, designers are 60% male, 93% white and, on average, 38 years old. The survey compares these figures to architects, software professionals and ‘artists & literary professionals’. In gender terms, design doesn’t come off badly – 84% of architects and 86% of software professionals are male. Ethnically it is worse though – 11% or architects are from an ethnic minority, 16% or software professionals and 9% of ‘artists & literary professionals’. However, according to the last UK census (2001) the country is 92% white, so design is only slightly off the average.

Fears of the recession decimating the industry do not seem to have materialised. A third recruited at least one designer last year and just over half experienced either no change or increases in income.

In terms of where the work is coming from, just under half of UK design businesses do some work within the public sector, which, on the surface, rather goes against the oft-heard accusation that designers have overwhelmingly become tools of consumerism. However, this figure only tells us that they do some work in that sector, it doesn’t tell us what proportion of their overall work it represents.

Only 7% do work for clients outside the UK but 69% claim they are facing increased competition from overseas.

I took my trusty little flip HD video with me and put together the following video, featuring four short clips from the exhibition.

On reflection I found most of the exhibition interesting and engaging, if a lot smaller than I was expecting. And it was a great event for exposing new media artists to the general masses. Personally, having an interest such as  I do, in visual design and code based visuals, meant I had seen maybe a 1/3 of the exhibitions prior to my visit. Although to an outsider to the scene, a member of the general public who wandered in just to explore, it will have been very rewarding.

These things are always about context. It’s strange, but some of the exhibits on display weren’t particularly groundbreaking or even than complex (not they have to be but I love being blown away by art and art exhibitions). But the context of being in an “art gallery” lends the work a deeper or intellectual standing. Put those same exhibits in a free party, or forward thinking night club and the context is completely different with some of the exhibits leading to a “what is this”/”awesome”/”meh” kind of reaction. At least this is how I see it.

Both my partner and I had a great morning at the V&A and I’m looking forward to the next exhibit touching on this strand of digital design. There is a very interesting AV night happening in May for those who can get to London.

daan roosegaarde: dune
from his studio practice in the netherlands, daan roosegaarde creates interactive and responsive installations that explore the dynamic relation between architecture, people and technology. he studied at the academy of fine arts aki in enschede and received an ma at the berlage institute postgraduate laboratory of architecture in rotterdam.

roosegaarde exhibits internationally. his work has been shown at tate modern, ycam japan, the national art center, tokyo, and the venice biennale 2009.

his work for decode is situated both in the porter gallery and in the south kensington tunnel to the v&a.

troika: digital zoetrope
troika is a multi-disciplinary art and design practice founded by conny freyer, eva rucki and sebastien noel, who met while studying at the royal college of art, london. together, they have backgrounds in graphics and communication, art, product design and engineering.

ross phillips is an interaction designer and creative technical director at showstudio. he gained a ba in time-based media from the university of the west of england in 1999 and an ma in hypermedia from westminster university in 2000. he later moved to fabrica where he was a consultant for the interactive design department.

recent solo projects were included in the 4th seoul international media art biennale and the incheon digital art festival, korea and the exhibitions ‘the science of spying’ at the science museum and ‘super contemporary’ at the design museum in london. phillips is a visiting lecturer at westminster university. he recently received a nomination in the london design museum’s designs of the year, 2008 and an honorary mention in interactive art at ars electronica, 2008.

1908

The first “Underground” map was produced in 1908. Prior to that the 4 separate companies produced their own maps and operated as such. The first map showed 8 lines.

4 from UERL, the Underground Electric Railways Company of London Limited, who initiated the maps production.

Beck’s Map

The first diagramatic map (similar to the one currently in use today) was produced by Harry Beck in his own time as he felt he could improve it, in 1933.

Beck was an Underground employee who realised that because the railway ran mostly underground, the physical locations of the stations were irrelevant to the traveller wanting to know how to get to one station from another — only the topology of the railway mattered.

With circuit board design as an influence, Beck produced a simplified map consisting of stations, straight line segments connecting them, and the River Thames; lines ran only vertically, horizontally, or on 45 degree diagonals. Beck was working as an electrical draughtsman during the time he designed his map

After Beck came Harold Hutchinson. Whilst Hutchinson changed some of the simplicity (less straight lines, cramped areas) he did implement the interchangeable symbols (circles for Underground-only, squares for interchanges with British Rail).

In 1964, Paul Garbutt produced a map, as like Beck had originally, he didn’t like the current one and decided to improve it in his own time.

Garbutt’s map restored curves and bends to the diagram, but retained Hutchinson’s black interchange circles (the squares however were replaced with circles with a dot inside). Garbutt continued to produce Underground maps for at least another 20 years — Tube maps stopped bearing the designer’s name in 1986, by which time the elements of the map bore a very strong resemblance to today’s map.

Today, the current maps bear the legend “This diagram is an evolution of the original design conceived in 1931 by Harry Beck” in the lower right-hand corner.

Music for Real Airports is a multimedia art project by musicians The Black Dog and interactive artists Human which is presented in art galleries. It is also a new album of music by the Black Dog. It is a response to the reality of occupying the semi-public space of an airport, and a contemporary reply to Brian Eno’s work from the 70s.

Airports are important and revealing. They are dystopian microcosms of a possible future society. The necessity of safety requires that they be systems of human control which only elevate the stress of their transient occupiers. Airports’ promise travel, exploration and excitement but endlessly break that promise with their stale, tedious pressure. They are intense and overwhelming environments. Anyone who travels by air will have been puzzled by the way that airports tend to reduce us to a worthless pink blobs of flesh, the human equivalent of the bags on the conveyor belt. Yet despite the frustration of being in that atmosphere, some of the best of human nature is revealed, alongside some of the very worst. Airports make for great “people watching”.

The artistic intent of Music for Real Airports is therefore to examine the nature of airports and to explore what they could be. We argue that, considering their importance in our lives, airports have not been sufficiently represented by artists. Perhaps the best known artistic response to airports is Brian Eno’s Music for Airports, whose purpose seems to be largely elegiac, even if conceived as an antidote to the stress of plane delays. Our performances, events and installations are a more accurate update to Eno’s work, and a to a degree, a riposte. Some members of The Black Dog were disappointed by Eno’s treatment of the subject in 1978 and have been considering how to produce a more meaningful response ever since.

A few months ago I happened across the work of one Andy Gilmore (I don’t recall where I’m afraid). Suffice to say I was instantly struck by the simplicity and boldness of colour and structure in his work.

Some of the lineup I know, some is new to me, either way I’m looking forward to a great evening of visuals, bass, beats and catching up with some of the scenes old and new faces. It’s going to be a long day as we’ll be setting up in the afternoon and going through until 6am and beyond (once you factor in taking down the equipment).

In Room 2 we’ll be using a mapped style of presentation which is something I’m keen to try (having always projected my work as 4:3 or 16:9 rectangles). Room 1 will be a more tradintional setup.

How digitally branded are you?

Do you have a real world presence. Is a real world presence needed anymore for creative businesses? This is something I’ve been toying with ever since I took the plunge into freelancing about a year ago. Are we seeing a spilt between digital and non digital creativity. Video editors are increasingly being overlooked in favour of graphic/web designers who “dabble” in video. Who’s responsibility is this, the clients or the creative?

How can you assess the success of a digital brand?

Having 10,000 Myspace friends or 25,000 Twitter followers; does this equate to increased value and follow-thru popularity as a creative. Are you seeing increased business or just increased exposure. Indeed, could it be having a negative impact, having crossed the line into noise/spam.

What tools are there that can help us assess this?

Is being an online focused creative working? For me, nearly all my business, clients, and exposure happens online. Occasionally I get to work with print, which these days is the old school. Is being mostly online focused restrictive? Or is the new media strong enough to support purely online creative ventures.

With the Internet (formerly the World Wide Web) you have instant (well as good as pending your ISP) access to a vast ever expanding worldwide network. But is being that big the right path to take. Do you feel swamped like a tadpole in an ocean of tadpoles? Personally I fully embrace the internet and the worldwide communication it offers.

Despite the collective global network I still remain either by choice or necessity (it varies from day to day) in a niche. Your brand, every brand, needs to come out of its niche and own than niche. Be the top of your niche. Why not straddle a few niche’s. You never know, a new avenue of interest, purpose or revenue may well open up.

This is what has been happening to me recently. As makemassair I offer a variety of linked creative disciplines and the digital brand management has seemingly evolved from my freelance work. On reflection, it’s always been there but has generally been focused inversely on personal projects. I’m guess my switch got turned on.

So this is something I’ll be delving into further. Keeping tabs on any new developments. And with the ever brooding death of Myspace hiding around the corner, it’s game time for 2010.

Paul Blackford is an electro producer known for his fast bass-driven sound. Heavily inspired by early Rave and Detroit Electro, his first release on Breakin’ Records in 2003 was described as a pioneering UK take on the Detroit Techno Bass sound. Since then, Blackford has released tracks on labels such as WIDE, Deadlock Records and Twilight 76 Records. In 2009 Paul Blackford set up Militant Science as an output for his own and other artists material.

He had been looking for someone to put together a back catalogue mix of his label, Militant Science. He decided on me. So I listened through the really bloody good back catalogue and constructed this 1 hour mix of 49 tracks with samples dotted about the place. I’m really pleased with it. The music provided really got me in the mood and the feedback so far has been fantastic and much more than expected.

You can only get the mix at Junodownload, have a listen to the samples they’ve provided. It’s a fast rolling, electro heavy, breaks smattering mix.

I’ve mentioned this before and I can’t quite believe it’s happening this Friday, 8th January 2010, but it is and to say I’m excited is quite the understatement.

I was commissioned by the Big Chill festival’s visual curator John Rixon early in 2009 to produce a short audio visual piece based around the theme of Quiet Voices. John was really interested in my Downbeaten Exploratory series of mixes I produced in late 2008 and early 2009 (of which I will be doing new ones in 2010, grab the first 2 here) and was aware of my editing and video production work. I’ve been to a few Late at Tate events before and the quality of work blows me away, so to be asked to provide a piece for the event is quite an honour.

My piece, sevenzero, is my interpretation of ambient. It’s not really background sound, nor is it stuff that demands your complete attention. In my opinion it nestles somewhere in between. Comprised of footage filmed on location in Scotland with sound produced specifically for this piece.

Quiet Voices, curated by former Big Chill visuals resident John Rixon, is an ambient audio-visual feast. Featuring Roger Eno and Dom Theobald, Jon Hopkins, Laura B and Graina, John Rixon and Simon Wild, Animat and Alucidnation. Together with a short film programme exploring the nature of ‘quiet’, expect an evening of beautiful aural soundscapes and lush cinematic projections.

As any of you who follow me on Twitter, or are friends with me on Facebook know, I like sharing a lot of the awesome stuff I come across. Previously I’ve either shared 140 characters worth of Twitter or otherwise have got together a post on this blog. However, I want to keep this blog devoted and dedicated to makemassair specific bits. Be they updates on projects, working methods for myself or related to my freelance work and so on. For the other “offshoot” stuff I am now using the great service Posterous provide.

I’ve also, as of last week, started a sort of mini, yet ongoing project “daily inspiration”

I’m going to post a new blog entry every week day comprising of something inspiration to me. This could be, well I dunno if I’m honest. Obvious examples would be particular music releases, films, events, artists, film makers, animals… who knows. I very much welcome your comments be they in agreement or otherwise and I encourage you to hit me back in the comments with your similar or other wise inspirations.

As for makemassair the freelancing creative, what am I currently up to?

Well in a few weeks I’ll have my first label specific DJ mix available. It’s going to be bundled as part of the new Militant Science Records release (on  December 24th I am reliably informed). It’s going to be a Juno exclusive but we are also looking to release it as a limited edition CD.

I kick off 2010 with the première of an AV ambient inspired video “sevenzero” at Tate Britain as part of the Late at Tate events. (some more info here). Really excited by that.

I’m also continuing work with Sample Remix, midnightminustwo and most recently Subslayers and developing the sevenzero concept into a performable project.

2010 is going to be a good year. Can’t wait.

For any users of the Final Cut suite I really recommended checking out Ken Stone’s rather awesome site. He has recently added a specific section on Compressor 3.5 (which comes with FCP7) but the info serves as a good introduction into settings and options for video compression and export. Seriously, any users of the FCP suite need to hit up his site. It is bursting full of easy to understand and well written tips and explanations (along with loads of illustrative pictures).

Finally, you might like to follow a thread I started on VJforums (Prores 422 vs AIC vs h.264), it also gives a bit of background to the technical aspect and creation of my Late at Tate AV film. I’m constantly on the lookout for good resources covering the technical aspect of digital video, its post production and delivery, so feel free to hit me up in the comments with your links and tips. As promised in previous posts (namely project: Acedia, the photoshoot & new project: Acedia.) here we have the recording of the début performance of fashion designer Sample Remix’s audiovisual multimedia Acedia show. In collaboration with myself, makemassair, and deadman dj (who did a fantastic job on the sound design, as well as redubbing the live recording with the original audio).

The show was met with a great reception and it really was one of the performances of the whole night. Looking forward to future performance projects with Sample Remix.

So, back to the video loop. Skywave asked me to come up with a looping video based around a certain colour theme, featuring UFOs or unexplained sky based phenomena, to have his text logo on the end, to be around 10 seconds long. I collected some open source and creative commons footage from Archive.org and using the Creative Commons search function and set about my task. The actual video loop itself was composed with Apple Motion, having used Adobe Photoshop for some of the still based layers. Oh yea he wanted something about triangles in there. So the Penrose triangle is included.

Countless tweaks and a few revisions later and we both arrived at a video we liked.

Sample Remix has been commissioned to produce a bespoke collection to be premiered at the Festival of Sins this October 10th in Camden, North London.

She has gone beyond the expected scope of the performance resulting in a multi media audiovisual spectacle. With a custom made prequel film to be screened alongside the performance in association with makemassair and deadman dj.

This is her interpretation of Sloth and the journey of one girl experiencing the depth and depravity of the Sin.

The photoshoot itself was pretty painless, with no problems. Both myself and Sample Remix headed down to Cheltenham Spa on Friday afternoon and as we were arriving at the hotel we met 3 of the 7 models. After some checking in, unpacking and a brew we headed out for a walk around the town before heading to a Pub where we spent the rest of the evening. Annoyingly I woke at about half 5 (quite hungover it should be said) but by the time we got to the photography studio and met up with the remaining 4 models, the makeup artist (MUA) and photographer it was clear noone else had had much sleep, with pretty much all of us being awake since 6.

The MUA began her work and ran through until gone 5. Her work was quite  impressive (even more so as she had had less than 2 hours sleep) and really made the garments shine. There weren’t any problems with the shoot and the shots we saw looked really good (we should hopefully have some by the end of the week). The custom metalwork jewellery headwear some of the models wore looked fantastic.

Although there was a bit of panic on the Friday when myself and Sample Remix were on the train heading down. She got a phonecall around half 12 from the MUA who having just returned from a month in America couldn’t find the make up sheets for the shoot. This basically being the design and makeup for each of the 7 models. Sample Remix took it well (both she and the MUA had spent time going through the designs prior to the shoot, enough that the MUA had a rough idea). At this point she borrowed my Macbook Pro and began to search for a WiFi network that although a long shot on the train, was worth a go. Sadly no joy. Although thankfully the hotel had free WiFi and Sample Remix was able to quickly and rather painlessly sort out the missing makeup sheets for the MUA who then could draw them up for the following day.

All in all a great, thou tiring experience. I hope you enjoy the pictures. (I also shot some video, which you might see prior to the performance, you might not)

I believe (from the information provided on Vimeo) that the video is a combination of the coding languages Processing, and MAX/MSP with Jitter, but with what doing which bit I don’t know (although I am very keen to uncover).

My realtime video work focuses on creating a nonlinear narrative which folds and unfolds in reaction to the interplay between sound and image. Digitization and processing allows for intuitive and spontaneous creation of image-sound scapes. Each video work is unique, situated in time and space, and reflects the ephermal nature of our experiences.

His works constitute elemental transfers – modifying the face as object – combining it with other stylistic elements to create a third visual object with a large visual impact. The work you see therefore is not a portrait, but an information-rich image of colour, form, texture, and content. The image contains the history of a short creative process, with the artist shifting between the entities of subject and object.

Yuichi Higashionna questions the optical experience in his work. Back in May ‘09 in Tokyo at the Calm and Punk Gallery he exhibited his refract! collection:

this particular show features an installation that is inspired by the idea of ‘the uncanny’. Included in the show will be a new piece in his chandelier series made from florescent lamps as well as an installation made from rubber bands and pieces combining painting and animation

Vicente Sahuc made this slow motion video in New York. Using a Steadicam mounted Casio EX-F1, shooting at 300fps he skated around the City on roller blades. Post wise, he did some colour correction and slowed the piece down to 24fps resulting in a great captivating piece.

As I’m sure some of you who are working for themselves successfully, or aiming for it, know, it can be a struggle balancing the work side of things against the hobby side of things (in my respect, the music) particularly if you are based at home. The danger I’m finding is that the music is easier to get into, relax into and generally I can even subconsciously avoid the “work” side of things. That isn’t to say I don’t enjoy the work I’m pursuing with my freelancing; quite the opposite in fact, I do. At the moment, the balance is generally spent finding the work, rather than the work itself. lol.

There are so many things that I aim to do in any given day.  You spend a while (normally most of the working day at the moment in my case) unable to decide, or flitting between them, that your day flies by. You’re left sitting there going, well, what happened there. For me, it comes down to focus. I focus on one topic, begin thinking about another one, sometimes related, sometimes not, and then begin that topic a little bit, thinking I’ve got it under control. And so on.

Generally I H A V E to over do things. I probably have mild OCD, well I’m hoping mild. So, 3 paragraphs in, and what am I saying to those of you who have read this. Well it’s this. That as well as highlighting creative visual inspiration as I hope I have been on this blog, that I’m going to use it as a soundboard for ideas, and discussions related to my freelance work. Give you an insight into the creative work I undertake on a daily basis, and in doing so I hope that it will give me greater focus and commitment to my chosen profession as opposed to my lovely hobby.

Phew. Ok, so one thing I have been trying to do is read up on video art in more depth than I did before whilst studying a few years back. I’m in the early stages of an ambient project and am looking possibly at a performance aspect of it. If not specifically for the project then as an after process to it. I’ll try to highlight interesting bits I come across.

Good old Wikipedia has a good basic introduction to it:

Perhaps the simplest, most straightforward defining distinction in this respect would then be to say that (perhaps) cinema’s ultimate goal is to entertain, whereas video art’s intentions are more varied, be they to simply explore the boundaries of the medium itself (e.g., Peter Campus, Double Vision) or to rigorously attack the viewer’s expectations of video as shaped by conventional cinema (e.g., Joan Jonas, Organic Honey’s Vertical Roll).

Peter Campus – Double Vision (1971)

Campus investigates the metaphoric overlap between properties of the video camera and processes of human perception, an area of great interest to many early videomakers. Double Vision inventories strategies for comparing simultaneous images of a loft space produced by two video cameras whose signals are fed through a mixer, thus producing an electronic version of what in film would be called a “double exposure.” The cameras are set up to perform variations of binocular vision; for example in the section entitled “Copilia,” the two cameras are set at different focal lengths and search independently around an empty room, attached to the same moving body. In “Convergence,” the cameras are stationary and separated but focused on the same distant wall; their images gradually merge as the artist repeatedly returns to the cameras and moves them closer together. Double Vision is an elegant and systemmatic exploration of vision using basic video technology. “[Double Vision is] an exploration of double or two-camera images and works its way up to an eye-brain model, always conscious of how this model differed from its subject matter. ” — Peter Campus

It was myself and another 3D animator who both work at a company called Orijin that put the sequence together. The robots are 3D on all of the wide shots. We did close ups and tight cuts with other kinds of contraptions.
