On a more positive note comes this video from one of my absolute favourite creatives in any medium; the sublime genius that is Terry Gilliam. Made me smile.

One of KidChameleon‘s obsessions outside of producing jungle powered bass music are films and that’s where the inspiration and concepts for this (and an earlier piece for his Future Farming EP) came from.

Bucktown takes its inspiration from the movies; specifically the 1970s blaxploitation films such as Super Dude, Bucktown and more recently the spoof Black Dynamite.

Short and and sweet photographic work from Michigan-based filmmaker Charlie McCarthy.

He shot 156 photographs of insects flying around your everyday street light, each shot a four second exposure. He then put it all together at 12 frames per second to make a wonderful insight into a rarely seen or noticed world. Look out for the corkscrews.

You might have already seen the odd image of Jennifer Maestre‘s work floating around the ether that is the internet. Her sculptures are quite intricate and no doubt took a lot of skill and dedication, not to mention time and precision. The result is a vibrant and unique piece.

Jennifer says of her sculptures:

To make the pencil sculptures, I take hundreds of pencils, cut them into 1-inch sections, drill a hole in each section (to turn them into beads), sharpen them all and sew them together. The beading technique I rely on most is peyote stitch.

I’m inspired by animals, plants, other art, Ernst Haeckel, Odilon Redon, mythology. In fact, it isn’t easy to specify particular sources of inspiration. Sometimes one sculpture will inspire the next, or maybe I’ll make a mistake, and that will send me off in a new direction.

I happened across this last week sometime. It’s a presentation given the week before that by somerandomdude, otherwise known as PJ Onori.

Put together for the Plone Conference 2011 and although it is specifically about GUI design a lot of what he presents is solid design theory, whilst easy to implement, is all too often easily neglected.

Entitled: Developers, you're designing experiences (and you didn't even know it)

Those fine people over at Aardman, you know that studio who brought us the much loved Wallace & Gromit and Creature Comforts, have been producing some self-funded shorts of late.

This is their latest; Pythagasaurus. The story of 2 cavemen and their dilemma when a volcano shows up outside their ‘village’.

Voiced by the self proclaimed part troll Bill Bailey as well as Martin Trenaman and Simon Greenall. It comes with all the charm that Aardman Animations have at the core of their work, it’s also quite funny.

Previous shorts have included Fly and Blind Date. “With Pythagasaurus I wanted to make an animated short film that was hopefully funny and looked lovely too,” says writer and director Peake. “Often you see one or the other and I was intrigued to have a go at doing both. I’ve never made a film before that is so visually rich and detailed. It’s been a real thrill to have had the opportunity.”

Public Resonance is a short movie that documents a product designed by Sam Weller in collaboration with Yamaha and The Royal College of Art. The device allows a musician or percussionist to literally resonate and connect with their audience by utilising the natural resonance in everyday street found objects.

It’s taken me a little while to add it up here, the EP was released at the end of July and we’re into September now. But nevertheless this is a piece I’m particularly happy with. Also, back in April KidChameleon, together with his sometime production and DJ partner, guested on my radio show Mantis.

The next release from On a Break’s newest family member comes in the shape of KidChameleon’s Future Farming EP. Stepping off into the deep end of 140 jungle, the Kid brings flavours of LTJ Bukem and Peshay into the opening to tracks with lush pads and melodic leads all backed up by big breaks.

The step up comes in the form of “House in the Jungle”, a garage/jungle cross over tune with an epic middle break down; Kid C is joined by first timer Casual Breakin’ on this track. Rounding off the EP are 2 bangers “Searchlight” which is a big old skool roller peppered with ravey stabs and Hoovers. Following that is “Found You” which is a pure slice of un adulterated hardcore heaven!

Kidchameleon has been picking up a lot of praise lately with support from the likes of Warrior One, Jay Cunning & Billy Bunter and has also received play on BBC 1XTRA.

Another solid release from KidChameleon sure to be rocking dance floors!

Inspiration

You can hear the music the artwork serves to illustrate and package at the music download store Trackitdown (amongst many others like Beatport or Junodownload for instance).

The source imagery used is a combination of my own photography often used as texture in the pieces together with creative commons licensed shots.

This is some artwork I recently designed and produced for the prolific and diverse Portuguese netlabel Enough Records. A Russian artist, Ostin has a style of production that is dark downbeat IDM infused beats.

The overall aim as with any album artwork is to get you the potential listener interested enough to take the plunge into the collection of sound presented before you. I think this is more relevant than ever as the amount of music being made available is growing so quickly. I hope this piece does just that.

Everything you’d want from a promotional fashion piece; great sound, some great shots, interesting clothes and of course the model, in this particular case Julia Oleynik from Union Models. For me this is the right side of abstract, resulting in a watchable piece that is stylish and indeed a pleasure to watch.

It won’t be a surprise to anyone who reads the posts here, or follows me on Twitter or even that knows me outside of the internet that I’m very interested in how things work and how people focus on those things. I seem to be forever making lists to deal with the work I should be doing, want to be doing and could be doing. This has varying degrees of success.

Zen Habits posted something recently on that very subject. Something that struck a cord with me and that I have on occasion worked that way. Thou I tend to more often that not continue to produce ‘to-do-later’ lists and not everything gets done.

Leo Babauta‘s blog Zen Habits is worth a look if any of this resonates with you.

Deal with something once. Do it now. Then it’s off your mind, and you can fully focus on the next matter.

Do most of us do this? We might read a bunch of emails, and say, “I’ll reply to those later. I’ll decide later.” We might see a bill or other piece of mail, and put it aside for later.

We put off small decisions and tasks for later, and they pile up, weighing on us at the back of our minds, pulling on us until we collapse under the weight of “later”.

Try dealing with it immediately.

If you open an email, make a decision on it immediately. Schedule the appointment in your calendar, reply, do a small task it requires, or if it takes too long, then you can put it on a to-do list — but avoid this if possible. David Allen suggests a two-minute rule: if the task can be done in less than two minutes, do it now. I suggest five minutes, even up to 10, as that means you have one less thing to worry about.

At any rate, archive the email once you’ve dealt with it, or delete it. You’re done with that. Move to the next, and repeat.

This applies to everything else: mail, paperwork, phone calls, requests from others. Deal with them immediately, or schedule a date to deal with it later if necessary.

When you are finished using something, put it away immediately and avoid a mess later. This is also how I keep clutter at bay. When you’re cooking, wash the items as you go to avoid a huge kitchen mess.

When your child asks for attention, give it to her now.

When your wife starts talking to you, put away the laptop, iPad or mobile device, and talk to her now.

What this means is that you deal with each thing in the moment, and then move to the next. Your mind isn’t pulled in a million directions at once.

It’s contrary to advice I’ve given before, because what it sometimes means is that you are often moving at the whim of other people’s requests — what they think is important, not you. And this can be a problem. You don’t want to just be reactive. I prefer to do what I think is important.

But a balance can be struck. When you deal with email or other types of communication, do it now. When you decide to work on something important, clear everything else, shut down communication, and just focus on that one important task. Don’t bounce around.

The work of Polish photographer Aneta Kowalczyk. She has quite a bit of her work online; these are some of my favourite pieces from her portfolio.

Quite simply, a fascinating talk given by artist-technologist Honor Harger where she talks about the strange and captivating noises of stars, planets and pulsars.

In her work, she tracks the radio waves emitted by ancient celestial objects and turns them into sound, including “the oldest song you will ever hear,” the sound of cosmic rays left over from the Big Bang.

One of the main projects Honor is involved with is Radio Astronomy, a radio station broadcasting sounds from space.

There is a sort of tragic fragile beautiful to the photography of Milena Galchina. A desolate romanticism to some of the pieces, particularly those where she uses the heavy fog with a lower depth of field. Milena is based in Sofia, Bul­garia. What follows is a selection of some of my favourites pieces from her portfolio at photo.net.

Rumours seem to be floating around the internet that a remake is planned for the frankly fantastic 1976 film Taxi Driver. Interestingly, and rarely for a ‘remake’ both Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro are involved, supposedly, as well as Lars von Trier. Photographer Steve Schapiro was given pretty much access all areas during the original shoot back in the mid 70s, this is a selection of some of his work from back then.

Nothing too clever for this piece of digital artwork created for the upcoming producer and skilled DJ Kid Chameleon for his recent promotional mix: 140 & Beyond. The brief was simply to create some artwork that reflects the atmosphere of the mix no more, no less. It does exactly what is says on the label this one.

I’ve also posted up the mix which if you like thundering bass and jungle inspired beats you’ll quite likely quite enjoy it.

KidChameleon – 140 & Beyond by kidchameleonuk

A deranged imagination together with being very capable animator make up the component parts Cyriak. Ever since I first saw his work with his piece Deadenders he has continued to suck me into his weird captivating and sometime quite disturbing worlds. True Loves by Hooray for Earth takes Cyriak’s animation into that of a hypercube universe. You have been warned.

Vibrant, colourful, interesting and quite effectively displaying their chosen subject (click the images for captions).

Were it not for the rather excellent work of Will Schofield and his 50 Watts blog we might never have seen these.

Through a former student and family friend I managed to get in touch with Phil Kirkland’s family. He’s 85 and lives in San Diego in a home stuffed with his art.

I came across the new video for Grimes track Crystal Ball on the Grimes/d’Eon split 12″ Darkbloom over the weekend. A really lovely video, great costumes and I really like the song.

Multi-projection film Berlin Horse (1970) was based entirely on a novel but simple idea of a repeating, subtly changing film loop. The soundtrack created by Brian Eno was also implemented using a tape loop. According to the director, Berlin Horse examines how the eye works and how the minds builds up a perceptual rhythmic structure

Also of interest is this vodcast from 2008 with Luxonline, where Le Grice talks about his influences and methodology. Featuring footage from Horror film (1971), Berlin Horse (1970), Neither Here Nor There (2001) and Arbitrary Logic (1987-89).

Cool Hunting, the ever inspiring interesting and intrepid New York based videocast have really come up trumps with this 90 second piece featuring Desmond Payne, the master distiller at Beefeater Gin in central London. Hearing Desmond speak, you’re left with the sense that he loves what he does, which I find inspiring as well as leaving me with a smile on my face.

Directed by Michael Stipe and Lynda Stipe this is R.E.M. and their track Discoverer.

Haven’t really heard any of their work for years, never really got massively into them, thou their Monster album from ’94 still sounds great. I find this video very aesthetically pleasing.

This is brilliant, I have totally fallen for it. A fantastic representation of a ‘trip’. Unsettling perhaps, but beautifully textured. I could continue to add gushing descriptors about this video, but just watch the damn thing. Directed by Sandro Miller, design and VFX by Gentleman Scholar with Josh Bodnar / The Whitehouse as editor.

I have this idea in my mind for a painting about butterflies. Blue and green and yellow butterflies, tumbling out of my brain. I think it’s going to be good. I feel like I can almost touch them… like they’re right there for me to grab as they’re flying away… out of my skull and taking all those dark thoughts and little devils with them. Just fluttering away and leaving the good stuff behind. Butterflies. I’m going to get my canvas and my paints. I think I’m all better. I think I’m ready to leave.

Directed by Evan Dennis, N.Y. Adorned ‘Tradition’ is a short but visually well cut piece filmed on location in New York. There is some seriously great ink captured on this film.

I’ve still got a few copies of the DVD Slices back from when I was buying vinyl quite regularly a few years ago (it’s a free DVD that some music shops gave away with purchases). I’ve since stopped buying vinyl but I’m glad to see Slices is still going and still documenting the work of some great electronic musicians, such as in this instance the work of Kangding Ray aka David Letellier.

Whilst I’ve enjoyed the sounds released on one of the forward thinking pure electronic labels around; Raster-Noton; it’s only recently that I’ve been exploring the work of Kangding Ray. In my defence Raster-Noton have one hell of a back catalogue.

Demonstrations have given way to bloody conflict. Battle lines sway back and forth as the Benghazi-centered ragtag rebels combat Tripoli’s mercenaries and loyalists. Pro-Gaddafi forces mount their first coordinated offensive, exposing the rebels as woefully untrained and unorganized. Defiance turns to anguish when casualties mount. Slivers of hope rest on defecting army generals and foreign intervention.

Photojournalist Patrick Chauvel brings us this immersive video from the rebels’ front lines. “It’s a very sad story,” he says. “These guys are students, they’re hairdressers, they’re bakers, bankers, philosophers, teachers. They are no military.”

Chauvel is concerned for his safety. Gaddafi loyalists target the media and could cut off any escape. Four New York Times journalists are missing at the time and an Al Jazeera cameraman dies in the days that follow. Patrick says fighting in the flat, open desert divides the rebels into two camps: lucky and unlucky. Shelling hits at random, missing by hundreds of meters one moment and striking a direct hit the next. Chauvel fears the misses are the warning shots. He plans to escape before the battle becomes a massacre.

Check out these altered magazines by Christopher Coppers. Pretty simple as an idea and some are more effective than others looking at the ones he has uploaded. But I like the idea behind it. These are some of my favourite ones.

Fire is beautiful, massively destructive as well given half a chance. Slow motion fire breathing is a sentence that sounds as awesome as this short film by Danny Cooke is. Shot down in Devon at Torquay Pavilion Gardens, UK. At points the film’s framerate is as high at 1000fps and it shows the majesty of flame brilliantly.

So I was looking at some of the photographs by Matthias Heiderich in his 2010 ISO Berlin collection and then I came across his White Noise series also from last year. His portfolio has 25 images comprising of the collection and they are just beautiful. Delicately textured with great use of light.

This project is based on the concept of artificial generative architecture. Imagine a future where humanity is extinct due to wars and destruction of the ecology but somehow artificial forms of architecture begin to emerge and create a sustainable protected form of architectural matter where the occupant is no one. A way of nature and technology highlighting in a sarcastic way the over utilisation of their resources.

This is my first collaboration, hopefully of many more to come, with photographer Julia Star. I have always loved her work and her landscape photography is amazing.

This is the kind of styled video that inspires me heavily. For my tastes this is a dream video to produce; slow motion black and white with fantastical imagery. Where do I sign.

Devastatingly beautiful and immensely powerful, an active volcano is a breathtaking sight. These photographs of the Nyiragongo Volcano, one of the most active volcanoes in the world, by Carsten Peter have that wow factor that mother nature seems so easily able to summon.

The accompanying article by Michael Finkel is worth a read. Scientists have ventured into the fiery and very volatile lava lake of an active volcano to protect a Congolese city in its path of destruction when she erupts. They estimate that the depth of lava is as much as 46 miles, staggering to think about, but these photographs show but a glimpse of the blood of our planet.

When? This is the question that has brought two of the world’s leading volcano scientists to the center of Africa; it’s the question that haunts a team of Congolese seismologists; it’s the question that may determine the fate of close to one million people. When will Nyiragongo erupt?

Nyiragongo is a two-mile-high volcano towering over the eastern edge of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)—one of the most active volcanoes on the planet and also one of the least studied. The chief reason for the lack of research is that for the past 20 years the eastern DRC has seen nearly constant warfare, including a spillover of the massacres in neighboring Rwanda. One of the largest United Nations forces in the world, some 20,000 troops, currently maintains a fragile, and often broken, peace.

Way back in the late 70s the American film-maker, photography and video artist Anton Perich built himself a painting machine, a huge early PaintJet aka the inkjet printer. Since then he’s been making machine paintings, check the attached video for more of an insight into the process.

Surreal and beautiful photographic work from Stephan Zirwes. Taking the pictures from a helicopter he shows a new view of our world that few have seen but one that displays the majesty of beauty and arrangement that is out there. His work is divided into 2 areas. The first is fields; including airfields, cultured land, snow, water and ice. The second area he defines as zones; dealing with man-made areas in industry, leisure and construction.

He says of his work

I can show constructions as a whole. You find out that even chaos has its own structure.

I’m captivated by the woodcuts presented in the book. The Hungarian version of Wikipedia has some information about Claude Paradin, thou the translation isn’t fully complete, but at least can set the scene so to speak.

This series Wool Me, Knit Me shot by Krzysztof Wyzynski is vibrant. A smattering of bright, bold and playful colours, complete with wool ball crowns. It’s verging on being trendy Shoreditch/Hoxton hipster, but for me it hasn’t completely lost it. It’s a close shave thou.

Nothing much to add to this video by Canadian design studio Tendril Design+Animation Inc. as they sum up their work pretty conclusively.

In January 2010, we sat together in earnest to look back at years of working together. We wanted to rediscover our inspirations for getting into the industry and identify the things that were killing our inspiration. We talked about what stories we had to tell and what emotions we wanted people to feel. We all agreed that our best work had yet to be conceived. Out of that conversation was born the idea of creating a visual manifesto. Each statement in this manifesto is a short work that stands on its own, but together the collection of works will form a vision of who we are and where our passions lie. Each of the works is also conceived and led by one of the artists on our team, who pitches it to the group. The work is then executed with the support of the entire studio.

The first of these works, entitled ‘SEED’ is now complete. Our longtime collaborator John Black of Cypheraudio: cypheraudio.com worked closely with us early on in the process to help establish the mood of the piece. As the visuals evolved, so too did the sound, going through several re-inventions before settling on the final.

Generating audio visual compositions in real time is one of those things that always grabs my attention, and White Box is a work based on that very principle.

It functions as a cycle, metamorphosing into sound and imagery concepts based on systems theory related to black, white and grey boxes. I wasn’t aware of what systems theory was, but good old Wikipedia gives a basic introduction, beginning it’s article thus:

Systems theory is the transdisciplinary study of systems in general, with the goal of elucidating principles that can be applied to all types of systems in all fields of research. The term does not yet have a well-established, precise meaning, but systems theory can reasonably be considered a specialization of systems thinking and a generalization of systems science.

Created by a Montreal based experimental video artist: Yan Breuleux has been working for a decade now on immersive devices, using multi-screen installations for panoramic and hemispheric projection. The sound was designed by Alain Thibault, and programming by Jean-Sébastien Rousseau and Peter Dines.
