Sometimes people who pay the money will be given information on how to advertise in newspapers and online for people to start an envelope stuffing business. You make $29.99 off these poor people as they contact you for more information.

If you see this offer, or it’s sent to you directly, it’s best to ignore it, no matter how tempting.

How to spot a scam

It’s not easy to spot a scam. If you are desperate to work at home and looking for something that’s already set up for you (in that you don’t have to actually start your own business), you might be tempted by these offers to work at home.

There are several criteria to help you determine if you are dealing with unscrupulous people who are tying to scam you with make money online opportunities.

First, if an offer promises big pay for easy work, it might be a scam. The reality is that few people can get paid big dollars for easy work and little work. When I first became involved in marketing and advertising, I thought it would be exciting. Working for an advertising marketing firm seemed like the best way to put my talents to good use. There is no way to make millions online (or even hundreds of thousands) without leveraging other people’s resources. The truth is, you only have a certain amount of time, money and contacts which will only take you a certain distance down the path the internet riches…

If you have your own product, you can leverage other people’s time by having them promote your product for you. Subsequently, you’ll be leveraging their traffic, advertising costs and numerous resources that help to make you more sales.

However, what does that leave the mortal affiliate when it comes to leverage? Well, up until now, pretty much nothing.

In years gone by, affiliate marketers had to rely on other people sending traffic to their own websites which were built from the ground up. This was hard, time consuming work.

But in more recent years, there has been a shift in the way affiliates can drive hordes of traffic and subsequent sales to their offers, all thanks to social sites such as Youtube, MySpace, Facebook and a multitude of blogs and forums.

But how can these sites be leveraged by the small time affiliate?

It’s pretty simple…all of these web 2.0 sites allow for comments and interaction.

That means that you can simply jump on a popular blog post, forum post, Youtube video, MySpace profile, or a network of friends or groups in Facebook and place your affiliate link right slap bang in the centre of all the action.

The great thing is, these sites already have the traffic and the eyeballs coming in daily. You didn’t need to build up the sites, you don’t need to worry about tomorrow’s traffic…these sites take care of all that hassle for you!

The best part is, social sites such as Youtube, MySpace and blogging communities all rely on their own users to build the traffic for them (and for you!). This means that the potential traffic that will be exposed to your affiliate link will only continue to grow.

Placing your affiliate link on these sites however, must be done with precaution and respect. The last thing you want it to come across as a spammer. Here’s 5 ways to get around this problem every time:

1. Read the blog posts and make a helpful comment
2. Watch the video and post a helpful comment
3. Get to know people on MySpace, build up a friends list and THEN send a bulletin or mail out to all your friends and networking groups
4. Participate in forums before adding your affiliate link in your signature
5. Make real friends on Facebook that are interested or will be interested in the same subject/problem/hobby as your affiliate product

These are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to leveraging traffic from the giant websites, without having to build your own websites yourself.

However, the fact still remains that in order to make sales as an affiliate, it requires a lot of people to be sent to a sales page, purely because most affiliate offers are not cheap enough to be impulse buys for the visitor.

They need to think about it, or really, really, really need it in order for a sale to occur. Sometimes a sales page that you send them to will not do the job of converting the visitor, so you’re going to struggle either way.

Huge Traffic And Lazy Affiliate Sales

This is always due to three things:

1. You are paying too much for your keywords
The way to reduce your cost per clicks is to create a more relevant landing page with LOTS of content on it, which is relevant to the keywords you’re bidding on. It really is that simple! If you’re paying too much it’s because either the keyword is way too broad (and therefore too competitively priced in the PPC market) or that Google doesn’t think your page is relevant (useful) to that specific keyword.

2. You are paying for the wrong keywords
Broad terms, terms that imply someone is doing their research etc…these are bad keyword to be spending money on. Instead, aim for keywords that are very specific (such as model numbers, product names) and also try to target keywords that imply that the person is on the verge of buying something. For example, “buy golf shoes”, “download eBook”, “software review”.

3. You are not converting visitors into buyers
This is a slightly more complex issue, but essentially involves a few key elements of time tested copywriting and direct response rules. These are:

- simplicity
Keep your webpages simple, easy to read & easy to understand.

- relevant keywords
Whatever keyword the visitor used to find your ad, (and ultimately your webpage) must be clearly visible on the webpage wherever possible. This will help the reader identify the page as relevant.

- visible links
Don’t be afraid to promote and sell! You really need to get your affiliate links in people’s line of vision. That’s the whole point and that’s what you’ve paid PPC costs to do!

- focused promotion
Stick to one promotion (one product) at a time, per page. Don’t confuse the readers with lots of offers, because multiple choices lead to no choices at all in most cases.

- easy on the eye colours
Don’t try and be the next Picasso, there’s no need to impress readers with your “art”. Just keep it simple and get them over to the affiliated website ASAP.

- simple navigation
If you’ve got a few pages to include, keep the titles “mystery free” and keep the navigation simple, so that at any point a reader can be just a few clicks from each page

- hype free, 3rd person reviews
Reviews are undoubtedly the most powerful way to convert visitors into buyers. This is because of many aspects, such as:

1. Firstly, the reader is in the buying stage.
2. Secondly, people react well to social proof (such as someone else giving their opinion)
3. Thirdly, it gives a soft presell of the product, without sounding biased or forcing the reader into one single action (they can always choose a different product in your review).

If you follow these 3 guidelines I can assure you that you’ll always be one step ahead of the competition when it comes to affiliate marketing.

I have been using video more and more lately and this is for two reasons. It’s easy and it makes me money! Many people get immediately put off because they think they can’t make their own videos but this is not the case any more.

A few weeks ago I decided I had to completely change the way I approach affiliate marketing, in fact all marketing online. I had no clue about how to make videos or how to market them but realized that if I did not get on board the Internet Marketing bandwagon then I was going to get left behind.

My results have been nothing short of staggering. You see not only am I making more money using these methods (admittedly in conjunction with traditional methods) but more importantly it is taking less time to do it. Now that is a revelation, well it is to me anyway.

So how did I go from knowing nothing to making money with videos? Well I was in a hurry so I literally went out and bought everything and while in a few cases I wasted some money for the most part the info I got was great. Most of the methods can be done for free but like most things in life you get what you pay for. A quick example of this would be submitting videos to all the big video sharing sites.
