SMC made this statement Thursday after its President Ramon Ang said that it was thinking of making the company private because compliance with the Philippine Stock Exchange’s requirements on disclosures has sometimes made it difficult for San Miguel to make purchases.

“If your balance sheet is strong like San Miguel, you don’t need to be publicly listed,” Ang said at the company’s headquarters in Manila. “If I have my way, I will privatize it next year,” he said. He also said that if he has his “way,” SMC will buy back its shares and become privately held by next year. Buying back the shares may cost about $800 million he said. SMC had a public float of 14 percent as of May 5, it said at the time. That’s worth about P40 billion ($943 million) based on today’s share price.

He also said in an interview that “Listed companies are more prone to “leakage” of information, and disclosures sometimes work to the advantage of competitors.”

San Miguel had P127 billion in cash and near-cash items as of June and has a total of P186 billion of bonds and loans due by 2019, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

According to one source, PSEi recouped 133.11 points or 3.2% to close at 4,290.14 today following big Wall Street recovery and rebound as of last night. Yesterday the PSEi closed at 174.21 points or 4% lower at 4,157.03 after what is being called the Wall Street meltdown.

There are still bargain prices out there based on stock prices last week. For those who want to invest, you can still do buy some stocks at still their lower price stock range average. This is just opinion and observation. You got to do your own research and wise decision if you plan to invest at this time.

As of 9:56AM today, the PSEi is at 4281 which is up by 124 points with a value of P1.4B.

As of 10:25AM, the PSEi is at 4264 which is up by 107 points.

As of 11:05Am, the PSEi is at 4261 which is up by 104 points with a value of P4B.

As one broker/investor said people in the stock market felt joy, despair, greed, regret, fear, courage, anger this week as the market plunged and bounced back amidst the US debt crisis and credit rating downgrade as well as the Europe debt crisis that affected the global market even the Philippines Stock Exchange and stock market was not spared along with other Asian markets.

• Nickel Asia H1 profits more than double P1.7B on higher metal prices.
• Isuzu Philippines sales slip 20% due to supply shortage from Japan.
• Top traded stocks by value in the Philippine stock market are BDO (P63.95, up by 0.40%); SCC (P226, down by 1.70%); AGI (P11.56, down by 1.60%); TEL (P2.400, up by0.80%);  and SMC (PP127.50, unchanged).
• Asian markets have fallen nearly two percent (2%) this week.
• In the US, the Republicans fail to pass the bill to break U.S. debt ceiling impasse.
• According to CITI: markets will remain choppy due to a possible U.S. credit rating downgrade.
