Questions Answered from REAL BRIDES!

It has come to our attention that REAL BRIDES have questions that are ever evolving. Here is a recent excerpt from my business partner's email back to a bride answering hers. We thought we'd share these with you in case you have the same queries. Enjoy and submit YOUR questions to us, too. We'd love to chat!

1) Would we be able to know/see some photos of the work whoever would be assigned to us?

- I would definitely recommend a trial run through for the bride for hair and makeup. The cost for a makeup trial is $50, and the hair trial is included in the price of the hair for the bride. Additional consultations are $25. Consultations for clients residing outside the triangle area can either come to our studio in Cary, NC or pay a travel fee of $.52 per mile plus $25 per hour if it is requested on location outside the triangle area. Either myself or my business partner Jennifer do mostly every bride we book, however on some occasions we will send one of our other skilled artists and hairstylists to work with the bride and her wedding party (we have 7 other artists!). So depending on availability you will most likely get either myself or Jennifer (we can accommodate up to three events on the same day). : ) The photos that you see on our site are a collection of all 9 artists and 3 hair stylists so everyone is of the utmost highest standard and skill level. We only employ the BEST of the BEST!

2) Do you use airbrush foundation/makeup?

- Yes we do! We use airbrush foundation from Kett Cosmetics, a company out of New York that specializes in the highest quality HD airbrush makeup. The cost for this as listed on the Individual Services Pricing Page and is an additional $20 per person. We also use some of the best cosmetics from lines such as Chanel, Bobbi Brown, Laura Mercier, and YSL just to name a few. We have been in this business for many years, therefore we have collected lots of "favorites" over the years from various makeup lines. Ones that we know work the best for weddings!

3) I'm definitely scared I'm going to be a major ceremony cry-baby...how do you deal with that - do you have waterproof foundation of some kind?

- Depending on your skin type and the "look" that you are going for, we would determine whether the standard type foundation or airbrush makeup would be best suited for you. Regardless of which we choose, we use a makeup sealing spray after the makeup look is completed to ensure a "cry-proof" / long lasting makeup / touch up free application. The product that we use for this was created for stage performers since they work under hot lights and extreme weather conditions. I personally have used this on myself, and know that it works with both regular foundations as well as airbrush!!! We also use waterproof eyeliner, eyeshadow base, and waterproof mascara just to be sure!!!

"I scheduled a two hour consultation with Jennifer, because I was feeling frustrated with the process of

buying makeup, and I always wondered if I could be doing more to look better. Being a total DIY'er and a cautious spender, my typical pattern was to piece together the advice I'd read in beauty magazines over the years, occasionally buy from a department store counter, and just make do without spending a fortune.

I just never really felt like I had the makeup thing figured out. I saw a consultation with Jennifer as a way to really get a grip on makeup. And that's exactly what I got!

I learned how to select makeup, not just put it on, so now I can shop anywhere and make informed decisions about what is best for me. I can confidently blend expensive products with drugstore brands and know that I'm looking my very best while staying within my budget. The knowledge Jennifer provided in our one-on-one consultation will be an investment that holds its value year after year.

Jennifer also knows a lot about skincare and guided me toward a different routine and strategy I would not have realized was appropriate for me. I can already feel a difference in my skin just three days after our consultation, and I haven't even purchased new products yet. I am simply using products I already had in a new ways. You read over and over again that starting with great skin is the key to getting good results with your makeup, and it seems obvious. But since I previously misunderstood my skin type, having Jennifer there to point me in a new direction made a world of difference.

Jennifer is extremely knowledgeable and has a wealth of experience and training, so she can quickly jump in to the details that apply to you and your skin, your face, your features. We had fun and chatted while she was working, but she stayed busy the whole time, explaining what she was doing, answering my questions, and talking to me about how products differ. She filled my brain so full of new knowledge and made helpful notes for me to keep afterwards, it was wonderful!

Feeling so completely confident about the skincare and makeup basics that apply to me takes away the

uncertainty I used to feel, and leaves in its place a new freedom to play and experiment so that shopping for makeup is pleasurable and FUN!

And the best part of all is that lots of the products I already had were perfectly useful once Jennifer showed me what to do with them and guided my expectations for what each product can accomplish. She brought her stuff with her to show me new products I might like, but none of it's for sale, so there is no pressure! I like that she built off of what I already owned so I only need to buy a few things to round out my makeup bag and be prepared for various degrees of effort in getting made up - the grocery store dash, the everyday work look and an elegant evening face.

One thing that I'd recommend to anyone before a consultation is to read a comprehensive book or article about makeup from a source you trust. I checked out Bobbi Brown's "Beauty Evolution" from the library which helped me refresh my memory about beauty basics and gave me a starting point for asking Jennifer questions about my situation in particular. Not only was I able to gain more from Jennifer's expertise by going in prepared, it was also interesting to re-read the book after our consultation and see key points I'd glossed over or actually misunderstood the first time around, proving that the book alone would not have been enough.

Spending time in a consultation with Jennifer will give you confidence and peace of mind about makeup and skincare, and in a larger sense self-image, in a way that no friend, website, magazine or makeup sales associate can. Personal Consultations To Update YOUR MAKEUP BAG!!

One of my favorite things about beauty is offering my knowledge and teaching skills to help others learn better ways to utilize what is already in their makeup bag, as well as some supplementary items that they may want to add to their regimen. I have offered consulting services for a few years now but haven't actively marketed myself for at-home one-on-one or group setting consultations...until now. After doing these regularly for the past year and a half and having repeat customers that enjoy our seasonal "updates" to their makeup bags and makeup tips I realize I should really get the word out!

"I arranged a two-hour consultation and makeup lesson with Makeupforyourday in order to help me update my look and learn makeup application techniques. I had been searching for a makeup artist who was willing to customize a look for me without limiting me to certain makeup lines sold at cosmetic counters. Jennifer exceeded all of my expectations! She met me at my home and I immediately found her to be warm and very comfortable to be around. We sat at my kitchen table with all of my makeup spread out so she could evaluate what kind of skincare and makeup I was currently using. I sent her links to pictures beforehand of makeup looks that I liked so that she had a good idea of my personal style and what I was trying to achieve. Jennifer is not a representative for any particular product line so her opinions are unbiased. In fact, she used a lot of my makeup to complete the look and made recommendations for products that I did not have. She is more than willing to work within your price range. The 15 minute look was very natural and I learned so much about concealer application and how to really open up my tired eyes and hide those dark circles after a sleepless night waking up with kids. And my evening look made me feel beautiful and glamorous! I have to admit that I went to the grocery store after our appointment and I initially felt weird being all made up for nighttime when it was the middle of the afternoon. This very handsome young man who was at least 20 years younger than me approached me with flirty conversation. It was very flattering even though I am old enough to be his mother! ;-) Thanks for making me feel young and beautiful Jen!!!!!

I HIGHLY recommend Makupforyourday for anyone who needs a makeover, lessons on makeup application or help with picking out products. Jenny and Jamie are two of my oldest friends. Jamie and I used to go to daycare together (we won't say how long ago that was!) and Jenny and I have been "bff's" since 2nd grade. Jenny and Jamie were married on October 30th in the gorgeous NC mountains at Lake Eden. The weather could not have been more beautiful and neither could the bride. The colors popped everywhere and sky was so blue. The whole day was simply picturesque.

Kristen and James were married in early October at the gorgeous Umstead Hotel and Spa in Cary, NC. This wedding was absolutely stunning...just like the bride! I love all the colors incorporated and of course I love the international flair from the groom's family. James is of Korean origin so his family is seen wearing the Hanbok. They are so gorgeous!! Here's what I found about them online: "The Hanbok, worn today are designed after those worn during the Confucian-oriented Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910). The women's hanbok is comprised of a wrap-around skirt and a jacket. It is often called chima-jeogori, the Korean word for skirt is 'chima' and 'jeogori' is the word for jacket". So awesome! In addition, how much do you guys love these parasols?!

Vaneesha + Logan

Vaneesha and Logan's wedding was a perfect way to end 2009 and start 2010. Their wedding really reminded me of all the joys that come with a new union. Vaneesha (or "V" as her friends and family call her) found us from a distance--planning in Chicago. After meeting her for a jam-packed wedding planning weekend visit I knew that she was going to be one of our most awesome brides. She's truly a kind soul and so much fun to be around.

V used several of North Carolina's best vendors. Some of which were: Our friends Andrea and Sherrie from Bustles and Blooms as her wedding planners, the fantastically talented Kellie Kano out of Greensboro for her photographer, and one of our favorite DJ's in the Southeast, DJ Joe Bunn. This crowd was sure to please, and that they did!

Another side note before venturing into Kellie's amazing photos of V and Logan's day was Logan's uber-sweet wedding gift to V before their ceremony. He gave her a laminated copy of his journal entry the night he knew she was "the one". Agh! How precious! But ladies, for those of you out there gasping right now at how cute that was...I can honestly say that he must get his sentimental side from his father. After meeting his parents a couple times before the wedding (because I did a makeup lesson/party with his mother and her friend before the wedding) his parents told me the most awesome story about how Logan's mother MADE his father's tie that he wore on their wedding day. And get this...his dad has worn that same tie to every single wedding that he has gone to ever since! How precious!

Ok, enough of the sentiment and on to the gorgeous makeup and even more gorgeous couple! Thanks Kellie for sharing these pictures and we look forward to more of your work!

We've been helping out with a major regional MEGA Chanel event this week in Raleigh and are so pumped up about the new holiday collection!! I just thought I'd share with you all the gorgeous colors that Chanel has out for winter. Definitely one of the biggest trend-setters in the business. When everyone else is doing red lips, black liquid liner and pale skin...Chanel spices it up with Bird of Paradise quad described on their site as "... Bird of Paradise, a tropical-bright quartet of aqua, yellow, green-gold and copper shades..." So gorgeous! I just had to have one of those AND the exclusive Les Tissages Lame's de Chanel! Holiday parties, here we come!

Makeup artists don't just do weddings. If you want to look nice for a big event, find an expert at a store's makeup counter—most of them do freelance work for a surprisingly low fee.

· Shop around. Head to the department-store counter of your favorite brand and study the people doing makeovers. Who looks appealing and friendly? Wait for the person you want.

· Schedule a test run. The easiest way to try someone out is to get a free makeover right there in the store. If you like the way you look, then make an appointment with that person for your event. It's also nice to buy one or two of the products that she used on you. If the makeover didn't turn out that well, you shouldn't feel obligated to buy anything—or to hire her.

· Make yourself clear. Once you've found someone you like, ask plenty of questions. How much does she charge? ($75 to $150 is typical, depending on where you live.) Will she bring her own makeup and brushes, or use yours? Make sure you're entirely clear on the costs and your expectations, and speak up about anything she did during the test run that wasn't perfect—"The eyes are heavier than I wanted'' or "That lipstick washes me out''—so she has a chance to correct it.

· Get the timing right. Schedule your appointment for about three hours before the event; that way, you won't feel rushed, and the makeup will have a chance to settle. Be sure to tell her that you don't want her to use a mix of lipstick shades, which makes touching up much more difficult. (Plan to buy the lip color from the makeup artist so you can take it with you that night—you shouldn't need to reapply anything else.) And while a tip isn't expected, you can always throw in an extra 10 percent if you're really thrilled with the results.

Natalie + Zeke

Natalie and Zeke were married at the gorgeous Henderson Country Club in Henderson, NC. Our artist, N'Zinga, worked with Natalie and her bridesmaids to help them have a great time on Natalie's perfect day!

Shawn with Your Special Day Weddings and Special Events did an awesome job with coordinating the vendors and helping Natalie and Zeke get their special day to be just what they dreamed. Their wonderful photographer, Jacoby Photography shared these photos with us below. What a beautiful bride and bridal party!

Karen + Rex

Karen was too much fun! I knew I was meant to be her makeup artist when I walked in for the consultation to hear the whole new Dave Matthews Band record playing in the background. :) And just like that, I knew we were going to click! Love, love, love Dave--because we're on a first name basis.

Anyhow, not to be outdone by the bride, Karen's whole wedding party was a blast when we got them ready in Wake Forest, NC. Her wedding photographer, Melissa Stallman of Wake Forest Portrait Shoppe, did an amazing job with Karen and Rex's portraits at their studio after the ceremony. Because they are local they had the convenience of going to the studio (out of the heat) to get some awesome shots to cherish for years to come. Here are two of my favorites and one of me doing makeup on one of Karen's maids.
